Ripping the Collections: Sweet P, Part 1
Wednesday, March 19, 2008 by Author
Poodles, now comes the time when we give the decoys the RunGay treatment. Stepping up to the plate, that inked little darling from L.A., Miss Sweet P.
Sweet P's kind of hard to pin down. Her work during the competition was (at best) erratic and when she walked out on that runway to tearfully introduce her collection, we didn't know what to expect. Turns out she has a late '70s/early '80s aesthetic with a twinge of the typical L.A. punk vibe thrown in. She has a strong color sense, even though we think some of these colors were misses, and there's a girliness such as you might find in, say, a Betsey Johnson or Cynthia Rowley collection.
As for styling, we have to say it's not her strong point. There was little in the way of accessories to be found anywhere and the hair and makeup were somewhat uninspired.
Let's start the show.
A good opening piece. As we indicated, Sweet P didn't really establish a "brand" while she was in the competition so almost anything could have come out from behind that scrim. This piece gives you a real idea of who she is and what direction this collection's going to take.
Purple and gold make up the "it" color combo this season and it's to her credit that she's not only on trend, but managed to find two shades we hadn't seen on the runway yet. It's not a color combination that many can pull off but it feels unique and a little chic. We like the proportions on this, especially the sleeves, and the button detail is a nice touch. We're never gonna get behind the socks-with-a-skirt look, though.
The dress is cute, even if it typifies Sweet P's predilection for giving women saddlebags. We like the gold trim. That jacket, on the other hand, is a whole 'nother story. She went from using an unusual gold and purple combo to using one that hurts the eyes. That lemon yellow looks awful.
"Kinda free, kinda WOW! Charlie!"
It's got a "Lauren Hutton at Studio 54" vibe that we kind of love. We think that's a great-looking fabric as well as a great use of it. On the other hand, it doesn't look well-fitted and those shoes and hose are totally wrong for it. A simple open-toed sandal would have made this look more chic.
It's at this point that we were sitting in our seats thinking "Wow, this is kind of a nice, cohesive collection with some interesting twists." This dress is chic and different and has some nice details, like the ruffles on the sleeves and the wide sash. It looks a little poorly fitted, though.
Then this look came out and we though "Okay, maybe this isn't as cohesive as we thought." The cape and the dress were nice on their own, but we don't think they work together and we don't think they look right with the three previous looks. The cape is dramatic and beautiful. The dress is only so-so and the length seems a little short.
Gloves, shoes and hat: all wrong.
*sound of a needle scratching a record*
Hunh? This feels like it just came out of nowhere. This is just wrong on every level. First off, the fabric looks like an old camping blanket, the SILHOUETTE, dear GOD is that wrong, and the styling is just plain weird. Those patterned tights and leather gloves just make her look she was playing dressup in a vintage store. Terrible look - and definitely the moment when the collection started going off the rails.

Boys, I hav to say your commentary is spot on.
The last look makes me think of Sienna Miller...not bad or good, just that's who I see wearing it.
Ooops - meant to say 'have'. Not enough caffeine yet, methinks.
I do think there were high points to her collection and was pleasantly surprised overall
granted there were clunkers but everyone has them. And the fit issues were definitely there.
However I think considering that she actually had less time to prepare than the other 4 contestants I think she did a good job. It's certainly more interesting than some of the past finalists who appeared on the show
Frank
Sweet P is another designer in this cohort that seems to have 'color issues'.
I did like the Lauren Hutton outfit, though.
I'm glad she got to show. I hope she can find a backer to get a RTW collection together. She says high fashion isn't really her place and this demonstrates why, but I think she could definitely sell clothes. And I have to confess I'm routing for her just because she's such a lovely person.
Seems like she got some of the "tragic" models that Rami, Jillian, and Christian rejected. Lea looked great though.
What do you think about that outside zipper in the second look? The dress with the school bus yellow jacket.
"tlo said: Purple and gold make up the "it" color combo this season and it's to her credit that she's not only on trend, but managed to find two shades we hadn't seen on the runway yet."
There's a reason you haven't seen this color combination on the runway yet: It's awful. I love purple and gold and even I wouldn't wear it.
I think it was Christian who, diplomatically, said in one of the interviews that she has 'taste issues', and they are evident here.
She also has hose issues. I think when you see a woman and the first thing you notice is her hose, she is wearing the wrong hose. As soon as the model walked around the corner in those ankle socks, the look is lost. But, we've seen her dress that way herself.
Like Jillian, she is dressing herself, except the difference is that Jillian has (among other things) good taste and is dressing age appropriate.
In detail, the gown looked interesting; as did the Charlie suit. But even when she starts to 'get' something, she loses it in the details. She is grasping for something beyond her reach.
I know there are some viewers who just like her, her personality, and so they get upset when any little thing critical is said about her. But the reality is, she never went beyond very simple, basic dresses all season, and most were poorly constructed. She was very lucky to be a decoy. I think Kevin would have been more deserving of that spot.

Sandy said..."What do you think about that outside zipper in the second look? The dress with the school bus yellow jacket."
Loved the material, the dress, the trim... and then I saw the back view, and everything came to a screetching halt.
I have to ditto donatony. I don't think the styling is as bad on the camping blanket outfit as the others. She definitely reminded me of Sienna Miller right off the bat.
I think Sweet P did better with color than any of the other four.
I loved the "Charlie" pantsuit. Also, she used some patterned fabrics, which we didn't see a lot of on PR this season.
I'm wondering if the fits aren't perfect because by the time she came to do the show she knew she wasn't a finalist? Although, she should still always want to show perfect work . . .
I think Sweet P is awesome and I loved many of her outfits.
I think Gotham Tomato sounds petty, mean and immature in her many criticisms. Her comments are so often not about the clothes, but about the person, which is really unfair.
Well, she would have known she wasn't a finalist the whole time she was putting the collection together. Chris is the only one who didn't know for sure that he wasn't a finalist, but he behaved as though he knew there was no way he was going to get the final spot.
"Needle scratching a record" sound is definitely what I heard in my head when the horse blanket showed up. There were things about the first five looks that I liked -- except the socks and the exposed yellow zipper. But that one made me forget everything I'd seen already and wonder what the HELL would happen next. And not in a good way.
Can we not go there please. If she doesn't like the clothes then she doesn't
Frank
Overall, considering she had to fly back from China and mash this together, I'd have to say it wasn't that bad. There were some clunkers and very abrupt transitions, but it's not unlike others shows I've sat through before.
TLo is right. She's right on trend, the colors --even the plaids were all very current though I doubt few would be caught dead wearing them, unless you're going to a Jerrald Gold event. Sometimes I feel like I can't get a grasp of her vision. Her clothes are mass market --no doubt whomever hires her is pretty damned lucky.
Sweet P IS a sweetheart. Though I was not wowed by most of her collection, I loved the first look and the "Charlie" outfit.
I would love to have the jeans dress that she designed for the 501 challenge on the show. THAT dress was absolutely adorable!!!
----StkrShock
One more thing --I think her line would appeal to a trendy young woman who goes clubbing a lot. That's where the plaids would fit in. It's all very Silver Lake and Echo Park.
I really loved the gold/lavender tones. If the Lemon Yellow Jacket had been done in the striped fabric instead, it would have pulled the first few looks together beautifully and made the transition to the Charlie Suit.
I agree--she really *almost* gets it, but not quite.
I LOVE the colors, and am deeply infatuated with the "Charlie pantsuit." The gown and the cape are stunning too.
I think anyone who can put together garments like this deserves kudos. They may not outshine some more talented competitors, but they sure as hell beat my attempts at completing a Simplicity pattern.
I am constantly amused and, in truth, slightly embarrassed by those in here who throw around "poor construction" and "lack of taste" like they could do better. In the opinion of certain people, you would think Sweet P's creations are no better than potato sacks or garbage bags.
This collection was my favorite... I was bored by the top 3.
"I think it was Christian who, diplomatically, said in one of the interviews that she has 'taste issues'"
I think anyone whose idea of clever is "Hotty Tranny Mess" should not be considered an expert on "Taste Issues."
"One more thing --I think her line would appeal to a trendy young woman who goes clubbing a lot. That's where the plaids would fit in. It's all very Silver Lake and Echo Park."
Absolutely, Kani.
There are definitely those in here who have difficulty with "trendy" and "young." Their tastes skew very decidely toward the staid and frumpy, - control top panty hose, professional figure skating and Dancing with the Stars - and their exhortations are reserved, season to season, for anything young, hip or edgy.
I'd like to know who picked the purple and yellow trend, because I have a whack upside the head with his/her name written all over it. Blech.
I did like the first look, and I liked the gown and cape, but the color story did not appeal to me. And the shoes and socks were nothing short of appalling.
I have to say first that purple and gold reminds is too child-like to appeal to me. Something about Easter eggs, sitting through Easter mass, cheerleading, I don't know.... Plus, and maybe more importantly, I can't wear yellow and gold, my skin looks like baby-poo in it.
That having been said, until the red plaid dress I was enjoying this and thinking "aww, Sweet P is making it work"! But that red plaid dress just made my eyes hurt.
But I went back to enjoying the finish of the show. Not loving it, mind you, and this group in no way makes me think she should have been a finalist, but it was enjoyable.
Frank at 10:57 - did she have less time to prepare than the other 4? How would that be? Didn't they all have the same time after they announced the Rami/Chris dress-off?
Out of all five designers who showed at Fashion Week, Sweet P certainly was the biggest surprise.
She was uneven all season and to be able to pull together a show with less time (and who knows if she had less money) than the other designers, I say, KUDOS to her.
Her looks were a lot more cohesive, interesting and better fitting than Mychael Knight's from last year.
And in Sweet P, we found a paired down, more understated and commercial version of Jeffery Sebelia.
It wasn't my favorite, but you have to admit that it was the most surprising, given past looks.
Missing from the show were some evening looks akin to the "What a Girl Wants" challenge. She could have used the purple or gold fabrics for those looks could have pulled the day and night looks together.
I like #3 and #4, but that's about it.
I love Sweet P and wish her the best!
I too am not crazy about the purple/gold color choices. And I would (this is just for me, now) avoid the metallic fabric like it was plutonium. I really like the Charlie suit. But many of her looks (and her final look was the most egregious) make the models look like they need lipo on their hips. And if it looks that way on a 6 foot, 97 lb model, what on earth will it look like on a "regular" girl?
Props to her, though for making the last jodhpurs from a very drapey fabric - that gave them a bit of an edginess. Sorry - I'm getting ahead of you. I'll blame it on the flu,
Another Laura said: "did she have less time to prepare than the other 4? How would that be?"
She was working on an assignment in China when Bravo informed her about the BP show.

According to Sweet P herself, she didn't realize she was expected to complete a collection for fashion week. When she left the show, she took a job in China. She was there when the producers called to ask for paperwork related to the collection. I don't remember that she was explicit about how much time she lost due to that misunderstanding.
I really liked this collection because it surprised the hell out of me that it originated from Sweet P! I was knocked out by the unexpected shapes and color combos. From Sweet P? I couldn't believe it.
That is not to say I would personally wear any of it, because I wouldn't. Loved all the purple/yellow combos though.
I am firmly in Sweet P's corner. In the end she seemed like the runt of the litter (in a good way). Constantly struggling, but hanging in there with the big kids. She did it with grace and much caring about everybody else which I admire very much.
It seems that I read somewhere that Sweet P, after her departure from the show, was in China working when she got the call that she would be a decoy at Bryant Park. She raced back and created that collection in less time than everybody else.
It seems inplausible, except that Bravo was a Tranny Hot Mess with the scheduling this season, so with that, it seems like it could have happened that way.
In any case, good job Sweet P.
I don't think it looks young and trendy at all. It looks like what was young and trendy 25 years ago; like a middle-aged person trying to look young and trendy.
It's a very 80's take on some 30's & 40's looks, but the colors and fabric choices are off.

"I am firmly in Sweet P's corner. In the end she seemed like the runt of the litter (in a good way). Constantly struggling, but hanging in there with the big kids. She did it with grace and much caring about everybody else which I admire very much."
That is the truth, L.B. --- well said!
On a number of other boards, it was Sweet P who was considered a shoe in for Fan Favorite -- not Chris March.
Sadly, on this board, she suffered from extremely harsh criticism, fabricated dispersions (remember: "I can't wait until her REAL personality is revealed!") and demonized by a small but vocal few. It's incredible to me that someone so consistently endearing and sympathetic should have been the brunt of such hatefulness.
"Kinda free, kinda WOW! Charlie!"
Haha-- perfect! I love that outfit, though.
I can't fault her for that bright yellow jacket because yellow is this year's color, apparently. But canary yellow being the "it" color is like GWB being president: how could such a thing have happened, and when will it go away?
I think Sweet P herself was smoking hot at the finale show. I wonder if she was wearing her own work. Yes, it was a bit unfair that she had less time to develop and make her collection. That being said:
1. It's okay, something is a little off about the jumper over a blouse and under a skirt. I like the buttons.
2. The strapless sheath is probably her best look, it is reminiscent of the Levi challenge.
But for that zipper!
3. The Austin Powers suit is well made. I like the jacket and blouse, but the pants are a bit much.
4. Love the shoes.
5. Gak! Hat, gloves, cape (with openings at an awkward place), dress with weird binding = UGLY.And why was it in the middle of the show?
6. I like this one. It's cute. To bad there wasn't a transition to this fabric.
Kani said: "One more thing --I think her line would appeal to a trendy young woman who goes clubbing a lot."
I'm 19 and would wear every piece in this collection. It's super hot and very appealing.
It's understandable that some people just don't get it.
LOL at Twyla: "control top panty hose, professional figure skating and Dancing with the Stars."
:)
i'm agreeing with tlo & most of the posters here -- while i think sweet p is one of the nicest designers ever to be on pr, i certainly never thought of her as a finalist. i am pleasantly surprised at this collection. there are some very nice pieces there, but i agree that the socks & dressy-ish shoes are a big "WHAAA?" for me.
i also hated the plaid dress, but really liked most of the other looks in this 1st half. i do hope that someone will back her - she's got some real talent for the everyday woman. i would love to see her succeed in mid level rtw.
Sewing Siren said: "I think Sweet P herself was smoking hot at the finale show."
SS, very few people on this board are as respected and admired for their opinion as you.
Someone else said: "Like Jillian, she is dressing herself, except the difference is that Jillian has (among other things) good taste and is dressing age appropriate."
It's terrific having you set the record straight.
I loved her cape and dress, And I think it does go together, got that oriental feel to it.(and no, I don`t just mean the fastenings on the cape!)
Kzspot
Twyla, you crack me up!
and Jeannie --you'd probably look swell in any of these.
Yup, it's for the Jared Gold crowd. Those plaid numbers would go perfect in that setting. And by the way, Sweet P and Kit were there (look for her photo)... well, everyone was, there had to be over 2000. Jared well, he's just Jared (and I always mess up his name). I see a lot of similarities with him and Kit. Someday, Kit will have shows like his.
Well Another_Laura glad plenty of people answered your question.
Personally I suspect she lost at least a month owing to the transition from the show and interview time for this job, traveling over to China and then coming back, having to quit the job. That doesn't sound like the sort of thing that would have transpired over just a week.
For a designer like Sweet P a month could have made a huge difference in the final look of the clothes. I've noticed she doesn't seem to be the type to just sit there and throughly think all the ideas for a design in one sitting. I suspect she is more like the type of person who gets a concept and let's it fully evolve as she constructs it. I've met good designers who are of both mentalities
This may have factored into her minor meltdowns and her inconsistency during the challenges.
Frank
But canary yellow being the "it" color is like GWB being president: how could such a thing have happened, and when will it go away?
This made me laugh. :-D
"Yup, it's for the Jared Gold crowd. Those plaid numbers would go perfect in that setting. And by the way, Sweet P and Kit were there (look for her photo)... well, everyone was,"
Incredible!!!
But, oh dear, could you imagine the reaction of Gotham Tomato? This would definitely get her Depends in a twist.
Sweet P fans, please get over the fact that someone, somewhere doesn't share your view. It's tiresome and immature. Comments attacking other members of our community will be deleted.
You can't say you weren't plesantly surprised. Sweet P's collection wasn't cohesive, but the pieces she did "get" you could really see in Nordstrom's or Macy's. I think Sweet P has something that maybe only Jillian has...and that's the ability to sale her clothes in major department stores.
I could see myself wearing at least 2 pieces from this collection!
Re the "Lauren Hutton" outfit: I loved the shoes!! Those were precisely the shoes I envisioned for the outfit. Strappy sandals?! You're kidding! Put down the remote control and slowly back away from the Sex and the City DVD with your hands over your heads.
Purple and gold were my high school colors, and that was all over for me in the 80s...so her color choices give me a twitch. The up-close shots of the garments definitely show the differences between her and the final 3. Far fewer details, some don't hang properly, not terrible but not final material either. Good for her to get to show and hopefully her career gets a great boost!
"j said: But, oh dear, could you imagine the reaction of Gotham Tomato? This would definitely get her Depends in a twist."
Depends in a twist? Why, that would make me look like I'm wearing SweetP's prom challenge dress.
My fashion sense is much better than that. I'd only use the Depends to stuff a push-up bra.

" Sewing Siren said...

I wouldn't say that. But I would say that she looked good at the after party, when she was wearing that blue dress, that covered her arms. She looks so much better dressed age-appropriate.
--GothamTomato
I agree with you boys whole heartedly on this one. I LOVE that 4th look (the ruffle sleeves) but the collection is SO disjointed. That cape thing came out of no where...I felt like I was being mugged.
And to prove you were right, that plaid dress is exactly the same pattern as the inside of my camping sleeping bag....i checked.
She is genuinely sweet, isn't she?
I love socks with skirts! And, those first looks are fab. That Charlie! pant suit - so cute. What a shame she didn't continue in that direction for the entire collection. Loved all her hats.
(Wasn't it interesting that Bravo scrubbed BPR's question to Sweet P re when she found out she'd show & how much time she had for her collection?)

But canary yellow being the "it" color is like GWB being president: how could such a thing have happened, and when will it go away?
I wish the 2 consecutive terms of GWB were as easy as blaming the Pantone Fashion Report! The colors we find in stores are chosen years in advance by a panel. Yellow will still be around, only it turns into ochre, which a lot of us already have in our closets.
PS - re whether P "deserved" to be there -- I think her sweater dress & avant garde RTW were two of the surprise best looks this season.
- d'wind
PPS - Oh, yeah - the jeans dress, too.
- d'wind
GOOD GRIEF.
FOCUS PEOPLE FOCUS!
Those heinous plaid jodhpur shorts? To borrow from St. Tim: "Clown Clothes."
I found Sweet P to be one of the two most likable designers this season, but there was no way she deserved to win the competition.
I swear to God, if Season 5 brings another one of Jeffrey's friends I will only read the posts and will avoid any comment section dealing him/her.
If I were any one of those LA designers I'd be embarrassed to be associated with any one of those supporters.
I wish the 2 consecutive terms of GWB were as easy as blaming the Pantone Fashion Report! The colors we find in stores are chosen years in advance by a panel.
Really? I had no idea. I have actually learned something today. :-) So I guess "Pantone" is written on that whack upside the head I mentioned earlier.
TLo, somewhere down the road, it might be fun for you to have a post where we (your hopelessly devoted fans) get a chance to describe what WE would do for a collection. Of course, I cannot sew, but I've had fun thinkin' about my inspiration theme, looks, music, styling.
Love, desertwind
So far I'm with ya on this one. Love the Hutton/Studio 54 reference---and that you liked it!
I've done "socks with a skirt". But that was pre-pubertal.
Generally, I liked this collection, with the exception of that plaid thing. However, part of my dislike of that one is, I think, the fact that it is so out of place with the rest of her collection.
I do agree that there are styling issues. The cape/gown combo is a perfect example. Those pieces actually look good together, but one is distracted by the sporty green leather gloves and the maroon hat, which are both totally out of place with an evening ensemble.
Comments attacking other members of our community will be deleted.
Thank you. I happen to disagree with Gothamtomato's opinion of Sweet P, but she is as entitled to her viewpoint as I am to mine.
The first half of the collection intrigued. Even the red plaid because I really liked the material and I thought the idea of a strapless mini made from it was very cute (just not the saddlebags). But, TLo are right -- styling was also a big problem for Sweet P. And it seemed as if each outfit had a nugget of a good idea, but she may be someone who needs to work in partnership to make the most of these nuggets. I seem to recall she produced her best stuff on the show when she working on a team, even under duress.
I actually liked the long gown, but not the cape. It didn't do a thing for the dress.
I did like the outfit with the ruffled sleeves, but you're right about the fit. Maybe someone ended up in the wrong outfit.
I liked Sweet P's collection for the most part, there were a few duds, but it was better than Jillians and much better than Rami's.
The actual designs seem pretty good, but the execution and colors were totally off. Majorly.
Love the dress with the cape and stripe dress (a little much going on, but I can deal). The pinky sheath was ok, but the jacket was horrendous in that color. GAH.
Red plaid, ok...the actual outfit? Blurgh.
For the most part I was never a big Seet Pea fan while PR4 aired, but actually loved several pieces from her collection. Sure, it was uneven, some looks were overworked and a few of her color choices were a bit jarring to the eyes, but sounds like the woman had a lot more pressure and a lot less time to put her collection together than the other designers.
However, I've gotta give her a big "Kudos!" for pulling the whole thing off. (I suppose this is why she didn't participate in "Sew Not Over"???)Me thinks that she had a LOT of ideas, but not a whole lot of time to work with.
And at the risk of sounding ticky-tacky and tasteless, I floved all the red, plaid flannel pieces! Even the floor-length look with the angora/mohair bodice. Very hip with a kind of a 80's mixed with a rustic, femmy-cool vibe going on with these looks. Simply amazing. I totally get where Sweet P's coming from and what her references were even if they may not have all been executed very or put together in a cohesive collection. I could see them broken down into smaller mini collections.
Comments attacking other members of our community will be deleted.
Thanks, TLo. It's getting scary here.
However - GT's riposte (bra stuffing)was hysterical. It's how an adult handles these issues.
I thought Sweet P was both sweet and entertaining on the show. I liked the ombre gown - in the words of the Duchess it was super chic - if you take away the cape, the hat and the gloves.
I was puzzled by the rest of the looks shown here. I can't say anything about the combination of purple and gold being trendy other than those were my college colors (go Huskies!). I'll take Kanani's word for it that these are clothes the Silver Lake club crowd would go for and maybe that's who Sweet P wants to dress. I still don't get the jodphur dress though. Who actually wants to wear that silhouette?
I'm wondering if we've yet to see Sweet P's real point of view. The challenges posed their own set of constraints and Sweet P may have tried to go more high fashion with her collection than she would otherwise design. I do wish her great success though. She was an endearing soul and those can be hard to come by on PR.
Shades of Wendy Pepper, those awful greens and purples. Some cute designs though.
I posted a review of her collection a little while ago on a messageboard, I figure I may as well share it here:
*Gorgeous first look; even though the whole thing screams "adorable" with te sleeves and buttons, the sophisticated colors and lame counteract it to make a falous look. Also, kudos to her on using complementary colors that actually complement each other, instead of fight each other.
*This one's not as good. The dress is cute, but the jacket ruins the look. And those pockets? I could understand the wonky pockets on her Peacock dress, but this is just ridiculous. There's no excuse for those saddlebags.
*I like this look. Like, not love. Some people have been ciing a clown eference, and I definitely see that. But, the good thing about this piece (and the following) is that they're very runway. Still slightly commercial, but she can't break out of that shell. Although, there's no reason for her to.
*The ruffles don't help to mitigate the clown effect, but I still like this look.
*This is the best look in her entire collection. The cape coat is interesting, but not gimmicky, and that dress is better than anything she's ever done before. Where'd it come from? The tiered effect (even though it;s been done by so many designers) is just breathtaking. My only real complaint would be that the color doesn't quite fit into the rest of the collection.
*This is terrible. I like plaid, but where is this bright, lipstick red coming from? And those jodhpurs? Ridiculous and unflattering. Way too exaggerated, and the length does not connect. And those stockings are fug.
*This is...all right. The pants are much better than the ones before, and the fabric works better, but I think there's a ddefinite mismatch with the top. THe colors, the sheerness...it doesn't work together. The wole look just looks way too extreme.
*I can't make up my mind on this one. The contstruction is beautiful, and I like the track jacket-inspired look, but the colors seem like they want to work, but just try to overpower eachother instead. It also just doesn't sem right for the collection. The fabric, color, length and lines are just coming from another place.
*Ugh, this is not good. The color is terrible. the proportions do not work here at all. The chiffon is too long, and the way the silk is hanging...it looks like it's falling down. terrible effect.
*This is a very nice dress. The color works, and fits in with the collection, and the jewel piece is very nice. But that's all. It's just nice.
*This is a very commercial dress (in fact, I saw this print in an ad from a Good Housekeeping I read in the optometrist's office).
*I don't know what really happened here. I guess, since she used color throughout the entire collection, she wanted a black and white piece, which is commendeble, but it stick out too much. The overall loo is so boring and so commercial, I can't see how this could be an exit at all. It also looks a little 80's, in my opinion. Eh.
Overall, she had some strong pieces in here that connected the marketable with the creative, and given her restraints with time and money, I think she put together a decent collecion. It's understandable why she was a decoy, though. And, if I complained that Jillian's was a little schizo, Sweet P's is full on crazy Sybil MPD. She attempted too many colors, too many silhouettes, too many different fabrics and too many different pieces. I think she'll be fine opening up her own boutique or something in the future, but she's not the next great American fashion designer.
Sweet P showed numerous pieces that were not only wearable but sellable. She definitely has a future in the industry.
I'm glad she got to show her collection.
If memory serves me correctly, Sweet P's models should have been bedecked in Laura Bennetts undergarment. I saw WAY too many bouncing boobs that day.
It was fug.
And it all fit badly.
You boys were VERY kind. But I did get choked up when Sweet P did. She looked overwhelemd....
I've viewed Sweet Pea's collection several times now, and I must say that I think it's intriguing how east coast vs. west coast style is critiqued on this forum.
I live in the middle - Austin, Tx.
Variations of Sweet P's designs are ALL OVER my office everyday. (loads of young hipsters--software development) One of my favorite young writers on staff, from Venice Beach, wears Thai fisherman pants w/satin & lace 'granny shirts'...and a side of Japanese Anime dual-bun hairdo.
She, and her contemporaries (funky guys, too) mix and match with the wild abandon of Galliano.
I'm encouraged by the creativity of the 'youts' in my life and I infer that what I've seen from Sweet P, during the season and in her final collection...are representations of what she's seeing around her as well.
The execution...well, hell...try it yourself. I haven't *lined* anything in two years...the serger is my friend. (sewing siren are you hearing me? :)
Worthy of being at Bryant Park?...the 20 to 30-ish girls at my office are wearing this type of non-homogeneous style with great ease. So I'd say she's got a market. I don't think we'll see her on QVC, but boutique-y...she could DO that. good will offered :)
Anything remotely fashion forward is a sweet relief from the jammies and sweats I see in Redneckville where color means "John Deere Green".
Frankly, Sweet P had an Ok collection. It wasn't good, wasn't bad. Everything's been said. I really want to see the hair myself.
Thanks for the Jared Gold link...you're right, Sweet P fits in there.
I'm not a fan of her designs and am too lumpy to wear them even if I were.
HOWEVER: every time I see a picture of that girl, she's hugging someone or laughing with someone. I still remember how she tried to avoid picking "someone on the team" who should be out in the "Old Trends" challenge. I think she's genuinely sweet!
Hope she does well...but I think she'll always do well in the friendship department, so she's already a success in my opinion.

I'd love to go drinking with Sweet P as I bet she can be a lot of fun, but I wouldn't want to wear her clothes. I think she's best as half of a design team. I think she had great ideas, but she doesn't articulate them very well in her clothes.
I hate to say it, but I picture her designing clothes for a Target brand. I don't mean it in a bad way. Us poor girls need pretty stuff to wear to work.
I've been out of the country, with limited to no internet access, since the end of Feb., so didn't get to see the finale. (Or read any of your takes on the collections)
Upon re-entry to the US I opened a People magazine and saw the Princess article --- that boy is everywhere!
I am just now reading all of your posts. Looks like I missed a LOT while away!
Anyway, as for the purple/gold combo --- when I was a little kid, my two favorite crayons were Magenta and Yellow --- together. This reminds me of those days.
btw - Crayola has a cool history of their color names at
http://www.crayola.com/colorcensus/
history/chronology.cfm
Wikipedia has a chart with the colors (as close as they can be reproduced in basic html)- surely brought back a lot of memories.
I digress (jet lag?) --- glad to be back, fun to catch up, and happy to read that we are all as passionate in our opinions as ever!

I like nothing in this collection. I don't like the colours, I don't like the style. There's not one piece in there that I would want to wear and that says it all.
I always liked Sweet P in her personality and personal style much better than I liked Jillian's , but her clothes always had that home sewn look to them, and never did they have the quality of workmanship that many of the other designers had in this season, or past seasons. With her granola taste and fit issues, the clothes she made for the various challenges were never anything that I would be interested in buying in ready to wear, and all of the clothes that were shown on the runway had the same effect on me. They remind me of a middle school home ec class fashion show of their end of semester projects.
This is funny that you hated the silhouette when Sweet Pea did it but creamed over it when Posh Spice did it. Transparent much?
