Sequins and World Peace

Sunday, January 27, 2008 by
Well, there won't be a new episode airing this week, so let's take a little trip down memory lane, shall we?

Like any good gays, we plunked ourselves down on the couch last night with a bottle of wine to eagerly watch the Miss America Pageant. During the too-funny-to-recap-here talent portion of the program, Miss Indiana, Nicole Elizabeth Rash, came out pretending that she didn't look like Whitey McBlanderson and sang in Spanish.

The flower in the hair really gives her that Latina look, si?

Actually, to be fair, she wasn't half bad - at least not compared to the chicky who tried to do Fosse. Oy, kittens. THAT one was painful to watch.

Anyway, at some point during her warbling and posing a little info box popped up on the screen that said "Miss Indiana's gown was designed by Johnathan Kayne of Project Runway."

DUH! How could we not have figured that out right away? Look at the corseting in the back.

Look familiar?

Sure, it's kind of a ticky-tacky dress, but this IS the Miss America pageant after all. We don't want to see these girls dressed like a First Lady. We want sequins and LOTS of them! And the dress definitely stood out on the stage.

You go, Kaynebow! We miss you!

I was so excited while watching the pageant and seeing Kayne's name come up! I had just commented how I actually liked the dress for the number she did and how I loved the back! I miss Kayne!

Michael said...

OMG! I thought the suddenly Spanish flair the talent portion took was hilarious, too. But at least it was original. But so was the ridiculous Fosse-on-pointe number!

lisasabatier said...

Actually, I found this quite restrained for little Kaynebow. The flowers did cascade down only one side, after all. Frankly his taste level is unquestioned, and she could go as is straight to a photo shoot for Elle, well Seventeen, maybe.

I MISS YOU KAYNE.

Yay, he's still going strong! I absolutely loved Kayne and am glad to see that he's still doing what he does best: making big, loud, bright dresses that somehow still manage to be beautiful. :)

Anonymous said...

WOW! Lookie there! Go Kayne! That Miss Universe dress from S3 must have sent his career flying off like a rocket. Of course, the corseting in the back! Dead give-away. Congratulations Kayne!

GothamTomato said...

I like the back of the dress, but the front looks like a bunch of arrows all pointing at her vajayjay. Of course, they say it pays to advertise, but still...

--GothamTomato

P.S.- If they ever do a PR Allstars, Kayne would have to be one of the contestants.

The festivities used to include a parade on the Atlantic City boardwalk the night before the pagent and I actually was a Beach Patrol princess on a float more years ago than I'll ever admit. MY dress, unfortunately, was more Macy's than Kayne's.

Anonymous said...

Uh, why isn't there a new episode this week?!

Anonymous said...

Thanks for the pictures (I had no idea the pageant was on!). I would love to read an update from Kayne himself; he was such a fun guy, and I can imagine his clients love him.

Manggy said...

I'm just distracted by the fact she looks like Geri Halliwell!

Anonymous said...

I'm glad to know Kayne's doing well but the pink ruffle and drape remind me of my grandmother's Priscilla curtains.

"Whitey McBlanderson"
Just one more reason I love TLo!

Unknown said...

gotham tomato, not only is that cutout in the front pointing straight to her vajayjay, it boldly announces what it's pointing to.

or is it just me.

I didn't watch the Miss America Pageant. Thanks for the update on Kayne. I think he did a beautiful job and it fit the event to a T!

DolceLorenzo said...

Aww, I miss Kaynebow! I'm glad he's doing so well. I agree with you bitches, the dress is perfect for the event.

OHMYGOD I just checked the PRG archive (I knew I had seen the front of that dress somewhere)and it looks exactly like the dress Amanda is wearing here. I guess it is ok if you copy yourself.

Anonymous said...

Idly surfing the web, and look what we have here...

Go Kaynebow!

Gotham and K., you're cracking me up. Again.

Anonymous said...

KAYNEBOW!!! How I miss you!
Season 3 rocked!!

Anonymous said...

I missed this part! I was turned off by the 'reality show to get promotion' thing they did before the pageant.

I hope you're going to mention the fabulous Austin Scarlett being on Real Housewives of Orange County on Bravo! How interesting is it that he's doing wedding dresses?

Sewhat? said...

Wow, nice catch Bettie !! I like the one on Amanda better but I am sure it didn't show enough "Gam" for Miss A.

Ok, Somebody's got some 'splainin' to do!

What is up with the episode sched? How do they whittle the numbers down in time with Fashion week starting on Feb. 1 ?

We have two people , at least, to get rid of. We have the "home visit" and the "let's bring them all back to make drunk snotty comments about each other's video clips" episode. And then the Bryant Park extravaganza.

How does all this get accomplished in two weeks with no new episode this week ?

Anonymous said...

"Whitey McBlanderson"
LOL. Kayne is very good at what he does, and he is a sweetheart to boot.

Anonymous said...

Kaynebow how I love how I love you!...

WHAT???? No new episode. WAIT. A . MINUTE. What does that mean? Double elimination? How are they going to get down to four contestants? I'm confused.

Yup, it's the same dress, even the back is the same. I agree with Sewhat? I like the one on Amanda better.

Sorry, English is not my first language...

NARROW down to four contestants...

I was disappointed, having watched the Miss America Reality Check shows leading up to the pageant. I don't think the contestants acted any differently than in the previous pageants. The dresses, hair, and makeup looked pretty much the same, and it looked like most of the girls were afraid to do the "runway walk" for the swimsuit competition. But most of all--AMERICA'S PICK, Miss Utah, who actually was a deviation from the typical Miss America type, was eliminated by the judges just after she was announced as America's pick! You want this to appeal more to Americans today, but totally ignore our pick?

Anonymous said...

audra, i totally agree. i was nursing a hangover all day yesterday and watched the "miss america: reality check" marathon before the pageant (yes, i have no life). they made such a big deal out of not being too "pageanty" and then chose the most cheesed-out pageant girl of all the finalists. miss washington got ROBBED (even though her evening dress was fuggers).

Yeah, so much for "reality check," the judges picked someone who looks exactly like a typical Miss America - what's new about this?

Anonymous said...

Kayne is adorable and so talented. Go, Kayne!!!

Save_The_Hobbit said...

I watched the Miss America Reality Check (because I am in love with Michael Urie), and then I watched the Miss America competition. All my favorites got eliminated! I couldn't believe it when they eliminated Miss Utah right off the bat after she was America's pick!

What's interestiung about Kayne's gown from a technical standpoint is that there is a sort of "scrim" of hot pink fabric *behind* her leg (not the ruffle - it's behind the ruffle). It's clearly not the lining either, and I guess it enabled him to make that up-to-there-slit and avoid showing us something we don't wanna see at a Miss America Pagent. I wonder how he did that.

Anonymous said...

Ah darn! I totally forgot about the pageant! Aw well, it'll be fun to get the recaps here from the boys.

NahnCee said...

Anyone know who the judges were for the contest?

They obviously hadn't gotten the memo about big hair being out.

NahnCee said...

And are TV directors on strike, too, along with the writers? Who-ever directed the program needs to be shot. Long long shots of the dancers, or shots focusing on the dancer's feet when she's doing Fosse hand things, or shots focusing on the dancer's head when she's doing feet stuff. Just appalling.

It's harder to muck up the singers, but it would have been nice to get close-ups of their dresses while they were warbling.

Judges who were clueless, an announcer who kept apologizing, and a camera director with an instinct for showing us exactly the wrong thing in closeup at the right moment - definite room for improvement, Mr Trump.

Anonymous said...

Good for Kaynebow. Didn't see the new, and apparently not improved, Miss America pageant, but glad to hear he's doing well. I'm not loving the dress, but pageants exist in some sort of parallel universe I don't begin to understand.

I was worried. I thought you were going to make us all start watching Miss America instead of Rungay.

well actually miss indiana designed her own dress for the evening gown competition which i liked a lot better than kayne's! even though i liked him on PR season 3-- she apparently has a fashion design background--anyway yes the pageant was the same old same old; not even clinton could inject life into it!- I also agree Miss Utah was robbed; she did kind of stink it up though during swimsuit-- sigh she was soo good on the reality check show though blah

Awww - love our Kaynebow! And that was a terrific pageant dress. He seems to have been working non-stop since the show and his pageant and prom dresses are apparently doing great. I wish they would take a page from Top Chef and bring back some fan favs from each year for a mini-competition to make a REAL dress for something. (And please leave out the Vincents and other non-favs.) I would love to see Kayne and Robert get back together for some commentary, at least! No-one could do the snark better. (Except TLo, of course.) Love ya, mean it!!

Since Kayne designed the costume that she wore for her talent, rather than a traditional evening gown for the EG portion of the show, I think a little "over-the-top-ness" and some vajayjay pointing are acceptable. As for her singing, didn't the caption say that she lived in South America for a while? Maybe she is honoring her family or she thought the song was beautiful and meaningful. I don't know because, in addition to taking French, I simply wasn't paying that much attention. But if we are going to talk about dresses/costumes, would TLO discuss the fug that was Miss Michigan?

I was trying to point out that, if you think someone like Nahncee should not speak English, you should also as Latin Americans to refrain from speaking Spanish as well.

Which brought us back to where we seem to have started...with expecting Latin Americans to learn to speak something other than Spanish.

For all we know, Nahncee's intent was to praise a Miss America contestant for reaching out to the non-English speaking population.

Or, you could simply interpret her words as irony that fell flat.

The shape of the corset is practically identical, althought it seems that both of them were striving to be unique.

I was just SO disappointed to see the same old crap pageant gowns out there. I hope they keep trying to update this thing, but dang.
