There's so much gay in this picture that it's overwhelming even us.
Once again, disagreement rears its ugly head at Chez RunGay. Lorenzo hates it; Tom ...well, it's not that Tom loves it, exactly.
Is it kind of a silly, ugly, little dress? Yeah, a little.
Is his use of the Hershey's logo kind of obvious and uninspired when compared to Chris' or Rami's? Absolutely.
Is all that crinkly silver in the skirt kind of trashy-looking? Pretty much.
Does the phrase "silver bubble skirt" make us break out in hives? Unquestionably.
But here's Tom's defense: it's more inventive than anything Ricky's done so far.
Granted, that's not much of a defense.
There was at least some thought put into this that raises it above most of his previous work and yes, it's a little silly-looking but looking at it a certain way, that's part of the charm. She looks like she works in Willy Wonka's factory. She needed a kicky silver pillbox hat to complete the look.

This was one instance in which we were in total agreement. She looks like a raisin.
All that self-puffing smacktalk and his entire design strategy came down to a simple halter dress and a bottle of fabric glue.

Seriously, this was FUGLY.
And the styling was terrible too. Sorry girlfriend, but this was the exact opposite of fierce. This was UNfierce.

Wow... I loved Christian's dress. It was great to see a new silhouette from him, and the materials created an interesting texture. He definitely kept it fierce.
But if Christian had actually put any effort into his dress he wouldn't have had time to go around the room and tell all the other designers what they were doing wrong.

Am I the only one who saw the similarity between Christian's dress and Michael's coffee filter dress?!? Of course, Michael's was awesome and tragically ignored on the air, but the idea is pretty similar.
I have to say looking again at Christian's dress, it did look like he was channeling both Michael and Chloe. I think they were more successful with the coffee filter and the leaf dress. But i think partly that has to do with the respective patterns they created and the colors. The wrappers make it hard to produce any effect that would be fierce or joyous
I didn't hate this dress since he was trying something different.
Ricky's wasn't the best but I rather liked it since it played into the spirit of the competition and he did try for a chocolate inspiration

yeah, yeah, yeah, Ricky was acceptable, Princess was a pain in the ass. But here's what's really ticking me off these days -- that jeans ad (and I refuse to state the brand name) they've been playing. OK, when it's on network TV, the guy pulls up his pants and a girl in a phone box crashes up through his floor. When it's on Bravo, SAME guy pulls up his pants and bags himself a guy in a phone box. I don't know about anybody else, but couldn't they at least find a different actor if they want to play to a different demographic? This recycling of the same actor feels so cheap and patronizing. (and that's not even getting into the whole issue of his apparent bisexual promiscuity)

Ricky really knows how to fit a bodice. You have to hand it to him it is well fit and well made. Is this the first time he has worked with this model? I think so. I think his dress was cute and in the spirit of the challenge. And furthermore he didn't cry.
Christian's was messy, messy, messy, regardless of the design (which was nothing new). He should have spent a little more time applying the "cups", some are smushed flat, some aren't, you can see glue, ect..it would have been cute if the cups had been more dimensional at the neck band and hem like a ruffle or feather boa. and maybe some backed with silver to liven it up a bit.
Christian's dress reminded me of Malan's tree trunk dress. Yes, it was a lot of work to empty out all those peanutbutter cups. So what.
For some reason I loved Ricky's. I thot it was quirky and fun - loved the bodice treatment and the ruffle on the bottom of the bubble skirt.
No, it didn't look like Christian was channeling Michael & Chloe: It looked like he was channeling Lucy & Ethel.

Ticky's looked to me like the Sugarplum Fairy's tutu in some bizarre, corporate-sponsored staging of the Nutcracker.
I'm left wondering if Ricky made himself a hat to match that dress - and you know he wanted too.
The bodice did fit really well, even though he didn't try it on - and you know he wanted too. He also didn't cry - and, well...
So I'd say our little Choo-Choo Charlie is making progress. He gets a silver star in his workbook.

I liked Ricky's.
This is one of the very few times I have to disagree with the Boys. I really loved Christian's dress - loved the texture, and felt his use of the wrappers was a stroke of genius. I see him in the Final 3.
Although Ricky and his Village People policeman hats annoy me to no end and I wish he would just get auf'd already, I thought his design was on the mark for the challenge. It was "whimsical" and in the spirit of candy. Although when I look at it again now it occurs to me that if he had put a halter neck on it, it would've looked like a Hersey's Kiss halloween costume.

i find myself wondering how this dress would have looked with different color fabric as the sheath, instead of brown on brown.
and i’m with sewingsiren—he could have used the wrappers more sparingly, perhaps as accents instead of covering the whole darn dress.

No one seems to have commented that Ricky's dress shape looked just like a Hershey's kiss. For that I give him credit.
I'm getting tired of Christian's snarky comments. No question he's talented... but once he's aged passed the "L'enfant terrible", where will he go?
Does anyone remember what Ricky's skirt looked like before he crinkled it up and added the Hershey's logos? I really liked that one better. I thought it was cute that he was trying to mimick the shape of a Hershey's kiss with the skirt and it's probably his bect work so far.
I didn't like Ricky's either, but I'm not very impartial. I don't like him so much, so I'm pre-disposed to disparage anything he sends down the runway (which is why I love the fact that Runway isn't decided by the public, but by professional who know their $#!t and are less swayed by personality). Alison (from Season 3) loved it. Um ... okay.
By the same token, I know that Christian can be annoying, but I feel weirdly protective of him, and tend to like his stuff. I thought his dress was attractive and inventive. Not anything for the winner's circle, and yes -- you'd think after one win and five losses, he'd realize that there are other talented people in the room and would keep his mouth shut accordingly -- but I thought it was way better than a lot of things on that runway.

Yeah yeah, the dress was bad, but GOD!!! the styling of the model was just atrocious. Don't those Tresseme people HELP the designers at all, or do they just do what they're told? Because that was some ASS styling - totally wrong for the look, butt-ugly and I think it was actually fighting the dress for attention over which was worse.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who loved Ricky's dress. I loved the silhouette of the bubble skirt, and the stitching on that bodice? Beautiful.
I don't think it's a coincidence that the construction of the skirt resembles the construction of his engineer hats... but I'm okay with that. It was whimsical and fun, and definitely should have been in the top three over the cowgirl hooker twizzler monstrosity Jillian sent down the runway.
Ah, you reminded me of that year I dressed for Halloween as a raisin and ran around to all the cute guys screaming "eat me!" The foibles of youth and alcohol.
Anyway, I must say I actually liked Ricky's look. Not as intellectual as Rami or Chris' but it was different and reasonably well-made and it caught the fun side of the challenge beautifully. A solid effort and he didn't cry so there. (Looks like he'll rectify his momentary maturity next week).
Christian admitted that he was all about playing for the camera in some interview I saw. This ep saw him at his worst that way I think, playing a Tim Gunn action figure. He had immunity, so he didn't try very hard design wise (which alone speaks volumes about him). He saw Chloe and Michael's dresses and went for it. Derivative. (A charge that could be levelled against all of his work, I guess).

Nope. This difference is that Michael's dress was pretty, flattering, and actually looked like something more than paper cups hot-glued to a length of fabric.

total agreement; Christian's dress was a crappier version of Michael's coffee filters in the first episode last season.
It was like he knew he could send a pooh-colored raisin down the runway and not risk an auf ... oh wait, he had immunity didn't he?
Still, total lack of effort is a tackiness unto itself.
I think Ricky was somehow in his element; uninspired, but drama-free!
I suspect Christian's dress looks better in motion, with the changing interplay of light on the texture of his "fabric." But up close or still, it's busted. I like the basic shape of it, but it's nothing special.
While I can see how people think of Michael's coffee filter dress, this isn't quite the same thing to me. Michael created a flirty, fringe-like effect with his materials that alluded to flapper dresses. Chloe was attempting to create a pattern with her leaves (although she had to give that up as time ran out). If Christian was trying to create a specific effect, it eludes me. And it isn't enough to say, "I'm using a three-dimensional material. Isn't that FIERCE?" The lesson of the wierd materials challenge is: it's not about what you use, it's about how you use it.
As for Ricky, it's the right kind of wrong for this particular challenge.
Christian's model has a sick look on her face in all the screen caps. Do you think she has conditioned herself to be revolted by the smell of candy?

Ricky did ok this week. Nothing impressive, but at least it was a look that was finished. I liked the bodice... I hate bubble skirts though. However, it fit the challenge so wasn't completely horrible. His use of the hershey logo just seems banal compared to Chris's outfit.
Princess.... that dress does not do well in photographs. I thought it looked kinda chic on the runway. The way the light reflected off the dress as it was going down the runway added something to it.
He should have added a bit more color to it, rather than just all brown, but I don't think it was as horrible as you make it out to be (but the screenshots do make it look a bit fugly).
Maybe I'm just too much of a PP fan, but I thought it looked pretty good on the runway.

I have no opinion on the fashion, but I would have found last week's episode considerably more entertaining if Christian had been forced to eat all the candy to use the wrappers. He'd be like the tiniest Mr. Creosote ever.
I agree with previous comments that Ricky's skirt looked like a Hershey's kiss... I actually thought it was a pretty strong dress for this challenge. It had the whimsy the judges were apparently looking for (and from a design perspective, I thought it was stronger than Jillian's)

The opposite of fierce, of course, is "Sears," pronounced "Searce" for extra effect. Snap!

Christian's dress might have won if Nestle had sponsored the challenge. They make Raisinettes, and that's what this looked like.

You could tell he didn't even bother to wipe off the little chocolate/peanut butter/oily bits that get stuck to the wrappers!
M. Knight's coffee filter dress was gorgeous because of how much thought he put into it and the way he used the material.
Christian really did just pull out the glue gun and go to town!
And with all that extra time, why not give us at least a little bit more? maybe in a contrasting color? like a loose silver belt or something!
Christian has JRD; Jefftino Ricebelia Disorder. Like most sufferers, he has actual considerable talent, but magnifies it in his own mind to the point that he becomes complacent and turns out terrible work. He then craps all over everyone else's garments rather than acknowledge the flaws in his own.
Maybe once the world finds a cure, those diagnosed with this tragic illness will develop the skills to focus on their own work and honestly and humbly evaluate it so they can start actually living up to their creative potential rather than just talking about it ad nauseum as though their superiority is fait accompli.
As much as I dislike bubble skirts, I still thought Ricky's was kind of adorable, given the challenge. I think it is the best thing he's done so far.
I'll give Christian some credit for not using pillows like most of the others. But still his dress is kinda boring.
Loved Ricky's dress, just because it was in the spirit of the challenge. He used the silver paper from the giant Hershey wrappers to make the kiss-shaped skirt and stitched it onto muslin for the bubble effect. The fit of the bodice was spectacular, and I loved the chocolate brown ribbons at her ankles.
Ricky, you're a pain in the ass, but I give you full kudos for this one.

This season's truly gay moments have featured darling Ricky. The pants and heels was truly classic in the last episode.

Did anyone read Tim's Take regarding Christian's dress? Basically, Tim was chatting w/ Christian on how he should use his free time more constructively (b/c he finished early). He was SO convinced he was the winner-- Tim retorts something like ,"I'm not as confident as YOU that you are going to win.." Christian snaps back a death look in crazed disagreement. Wish we saw that!!

I could see Laura doing something like Christian's dress. Except it would have a plunging neckline, smaller shoulder straps and silver foil balled up or rolled into dangly bits and hand-stitched... somewhere. *Then* it would look fab and the whimsey could be highlighted.

I have to agree. It took the least amount of risks in using material. It was so one-dimensional that he had no business talking trash about the others --when in fact, his dress was make of trash, wasn't it?
Christian's "dress" was a hot, bloody mess. I don't know why she paraded around crowing about how fabulous she was, when she had that piece of crap over there on the dress form.
The mad hatter did well for him. Which isn't saying much. But it was the best I have seen from her so far. Tear stains and all. I am close to saying it was better that Jeannie Buellers cowgirl ensemble.
Christian needs to go home. She really gets on my nerves.

I was baffled that people would take things like teddy bears and NOT use them in some weird way. But I was glad Ricky stepped up and had as much fun as Chris.

I thought Ricky's was cute and whimsical, and I got that it was shaped like a Hershey's kiss. Not a winner, but his best work to date. And I loved the styling. Cute, cute, cute.
I didn't get the fug from Christian's but it wasn't great either. The styling was definitely fug though. I saw the Princess as someone who didn't like the challenge and had immunity so decided to show he was above all this by putting out minimal effort. We'll see if that turns out to be a wise move.

When I first saw this episode I honestly thought that Ricky's was one of the better ones in the competition and I was surprised he didn't make it to the top 3. As much as I (and apparently everyone else) hate bubble skirts this time it was really in the spirit of the challenge and I thought the final product was fun and very graphic looking, not to mention well made.
As for Christian's dress you hit the nail on the head when you said it looked like a raisin. Absolute crap on a stick. Oh well, at least he didn't put puffy sleeves on it.
i liked christian's dress :: it WAS simple and ir looked gross from a distance :: reminiscent of a flesh eating disease --- BUT, beautiful silhouette, nice fit... bla bla yadda yadda

ricky's really was the best he's ever presented on the show. i'd love it if he could keep it up, just so we can get a few more weeks of designer tear droplets.

Oh puhleeze - you just reminded me of Vincent and that f-ing fruit basket hat (season 3, episode 1 - wall to wall fashion) THE single most fugly thing to ever soil the PR catwalk.
PP just smacked them buggers on any which way too! He had plently of time to fold then in differnt ways, using the directional ruffle that would create to sculpt an underlying pattern (which I thought that he would do when I heard him state his idea.
Ricky's? Eh...I did like that he actually created a finished look, although the pillbox with some silver tuille (20/30's style) would be "kicky" indeed.

I was looking at the first pic of Ricky's dress and suddenly, there was a strong whiff of chocolate in the air. I haven't had chocolate for years, but the smell was that strong!
i LOVED christian's dress! i usually agree with how you both feel about the designs, but you are both TOTALLY, COMPLETELY 100% WRONG this time! it was very sophisticated, classic, and chic. it wasn't the winning dress because the judges were looking for something more whimsical and girly like rami's dress. i love christian<3 he's my diva fabulous bitch

If you think about it, Pocketgay created an Angela paper fleurchon dress. It was a gawd awful cop-out.
The moment I saw Christian's dress I immediately could NOT stop thinking about Michael Knight's coffee filter dress from the Wall to Wall Fashion challenge.
It was so reminiscent of that...except Christian's looked more like soggy dirty filters were glued on there instead.
I love Christian but this was a big miss in my eyes. It looks sloppy and effortless, and not in a good way. He can do far better than that.

sometimes i don't think you guys understand high-fashion. not everything is meant to be worn...and the styling only made it more fierce. the model and walk, and with that clutch and those heels....wow.

I loved Ricky's dress. In terms of "whimsy," Rami and Ricky would totally have been my top 2 pick, in that order. I understand the whole thing about Chris' dress being *too* couture and I think Ricky bridges that gap - it could be fun/whimsical AND daring couture at the same time.

I gave both outfits a "safe" when they came down the runway, but in the final 6, they both would've gotten into trouble.
Ricky's design was mundane, nothing to write home about and Christian, although beautifully fitted, was... WHY did he choose brown buttercup wrappings? She looked like a giant turd. Raisin is too kind by half. Fortunately, with 10 designers they had more serious fashion crimes to address, but Christian! don't do that again if you want to stay until the end.
I thought Christian's dress was pretty and refined-- but it didn't celebrate the candy theme, it worked around it.
