Chris and Sweet P

Monday, January 07, 2008 by

Well, it's about fucking time.

With the exception of that first Diana Ross dress he made, Chris has been all about "not quite" in this competition. We kept saying that somewhere deep down he had what it took.

Chris?

Thank you for proving us right. This was gorgeous.

We could see the Sprouse influence he was talking about immediately and it was dead on. The masterful use of the typefaces gave this a pop art look and the simple, clean lines made it chic.

Chris darling, you know fabric and construction the way the rest of us know air. Your only flaw in the competition has been your inability to tone yourself down. We knew you could do it, big guy.

The only reason this wasn't more of a contender for the win - and this is merely an observation, not a criticism - was that this looked too much like "real" fashion. Nina nailed it: this was ready to be walked right off the runway and in to a studio to be shot for Elle. Thing is, the judges were clearly looking for more whimsical pieces. Still. Beautiful work, Sissy Bear. We're proud of you.

Does this photo sum up Sweet P's entire experience on the show to date or what?

Honestly, we like her and her resume pre-show reveals that she must have some sort of talent, but she is clearly NOT cut out for this competition. Every single week and with every single challenge, she appears utterly lost.

And she's always second-guessing herself. This first attempt looked pretty ugly, but at least it looked more interesting than what she sent down the runway.

And Tim?

We love you like a hot older brother, but you CLEARLY have not a clue about the female anatomy.

A maxi-pad? This?

Granted, it's not like WE'RE exactly experts in that arena, but we have just the bare modicum of knowledge to let us know that giant circles with HOLES in the middle would pretty much work in the exact opposite manner that a maxi-pad is supposed to. Just sayin'.

Anyway, the dress.

Lorenzo thinks she should have gone home instead of Elisa. Tom doesn't quite agree.

My god, this whole season has been about us arguing on the couch! Can this marriage be saved?!?!?!

If you're grading on effort, then yes, this was clearly worse than Elisa's because it looked like absolutely no thought was put into it whatsoever. It couldn't have been any more plain-looking. And considering the materials and the dictates of the challenge, "plain" has to be considered a cardinal sin.

Here's another one of those Project Runway truisms that have revealed themselves to us after hundreds of hours of viewing: When you make your model do something stupid at the end of the runway, like give the finger or blow a kiss or shimmy like a stripper, it means you know you're sending shit down the runway. Designers: just don't. We think it's safe to say that jaded old fashionistas like Nina Garcia or Michael Kors aren't going to sit there thinking "She threw candy kisses at the cameraman! ADORABLE! I smell winner!"

There's really nothing else to say about this dress. It was boring, it bordered on ugly and it wasn't particularly well-made. Unfortunately, you can say the same about almost everything Sweet P's done in the competition so far. Sorry, darling. We love ya, but we can smell your impending auf'ing on the wind.

Great post--however I keep reading the maxi pad comment on various blogs and I've gotta say that Tim was not referring to the SHAPE of the garment that resembles said pad. It is the FABRIC he is referring to. It is the patented Stay-Dri lining....

I loved Chris' dress. It was fabulous. He deserved a top spot and possibly a win. It was a tough call between him and Rami.

As for SweetP, it was boring and I liked her first one much better. As much as I like her, I can see her not going much farther either. Maybe it will be VictorYA though. She needs to go next.

I think the fabric looks more like one of the things you peel off of the back of a maxi pad, personally.

Agreed, agreed, agreed on everything there, boys. Chris is the dark horse and I hope he can keep going now. And SweetP -- I am surprised she didn't get aufed. Bland boring usually is more aufable than weird boring.

And her model scares me. I can see where the extreme skinniness gets her in doors, but that lurching hunch should be getting her booted right back out. Someone get that girl a scoliosis brace! (and a sandwich)

Thank you, agnes gooch, for pointing out Sweet P's model. She lurches and lopes down the runway. I just don't get how she even made it to the show. Her walk is so WEIRD. I'm not going to say she has a deformity or something, because that would be mean. But her walk gives me shivers.

When I heard Nina say that Sweet P's was boring, I thought, "Oh, Puppet Girl is safe for another challenge!" Because "boring" from Nina is the Kiss (so to speak) of Death (tm). Unfortunately, they decided macabre was worse than boring this time out. Ah well.

Chris' dress was totally amazing and gave me hope for his future on the show. I would love to see him go a long way.

Think they go to Paris again this season?? How about Beijing with the ANTM creatures? heh.

Can't wait for the Prom challenge this week, I know Chris will show out on a prom dress since it is essentially a drag dress.

Did the contestants know that they were supposed to bring the whimsy at the beginning of the challenge? Cause to me, it seemed like the judges threw that in as what they were looking for AFTER everyone had made their stuff. Kinda crappy, because I LOVED Chris's outfit!

David Dust said...

Poor Sweet P - she seems to go straight to "panic" mode during every challenge, but somehow she manages to stay. If this keeps up, she's not going to be as lucky as before.

I too thought Chris' dress was delicious.

Mel said...

I have to agree with M. Sweet P's skirt looked like the piece of paper on the back of the pad that you peel off to revel the sticky. Lord have mercy if the backside of it was sticky.

Anne said...

I totally agree that the judges threw the "whimsy" thing in pretty late. Although with Zac Posen as a judge, maybe they thought it was assumed? I find his clothes whimsical.

Poor P ... she's really sweet, but definitely in over her head here.

She's flailing and floundering in these challenges.

Loooooved Chris' dress. And I thought that they were supposed to create something wearable? That's what the big German lady said...maybe I'm confused?

Sweet P's poor model has the sloped shoulders affliction of tall girls: "Maybe if I slouch down I won't tower over all the girls and most of the guys in my class." Makes me want to walk up behind her, put a hand on her shoulder, hand in the middle of the back, and shout "Straighten up!" like my mom did for about 15 years. :)

I thought another reason Chris was penalized was that it was a tube dress- if Mario (or rather, Nora commenting on Mario) taught us anything, it's one of the simplest shapes to make for a dress.

Still, his outfit, and Rami's, were my favorites.

Surprisingly enough, I would've put Ricky in the top 3 over Jillian. He made a bubble skirt that didn't look completely retarded, and more importantly, he didn't cry once, which should merit a god damn medal at this point.

Levityinbrevity said...

I love sweet pea but I know she wont make it to much farther.

Chris' outfit was awesome. I went from thinking "aw jeeez... the big guy's not gonna make it." to seeing him as a real contender. He's obviously smart, imaginative, and has mad technical skillz... go Big Guy!

(When we were watching, I said the word "sophisticated" describing Chris' outfit almost exactly simultaneously with Kors... Should that concern me?)

As for Sweet P... well, she seems like a very nice person.

Anonymous said...

I loved Chris' dress. Flat out loved it. Either he or Rami could've won and I'd have kvelled.

Ah, SweetP... this was a clunker. The first dress looked like a clunker too, but it looked like an interesting clunker. I know I'm alone on this, but I liked her menswear outfit. She knew it was 6 shades of fucked up and went with it. As TLo called it, the American Psycho styling made that outfit one of the most interesting that came down the runway that night. Of course, no way it could work for the client or his purpose, but could it work for the right at the right occassion? Absolutely, and her model was that dangerous kind of hot that made the choices she made work.

Sewing Siren said...

I agree that Sweet P 's aesthete and ablility have taken her about as far (and perhaps further) as she deserves. Her bag of tricks is definitely not has deep as many of the other competitors.
I like Chris's dress and I think if he had used the word motif all the way to the hem he might have won. Maybe he didn't have enough. But in my opinion the brown strip at the bottom takes away from the overall effect.

Gorgeous Things said...

Oh but boys, you know when you spend the entire season bickering on the couch, the making up will be that much sweeter!

That said, I SO wanted Chris to win! I thought his dress was at least as good as Rami's. I also thought the judges were on crack, or maybe had broken into the candy stash in back of Parsons.

And I hear ya on Sweet P. Like her a lot. Her designs thus far? Not so much...

I agree with the others about the maxi pad. It looks like the thing you peel off, and to me, that is a maxi pad. Although I don't have any experience whatsoever with those, being a gay man. They really gross me out and I don't have any lesbian friends to buy them for so I don't know that much about them, other than that skirt looked like the thing you peel off.

That Chris is smarter than the average bear. LOVE him! And I'm so glad he pulled it off this week. It could have easily taken the win.

I am rooting for the final 4 to be Chris, Rami, Jillian & Christian. THose would be the 4 most kickass collections.

Sweet P? The sooner she's gone, the better. She has demonstrated no talent, no technical ability & no taste in any challenge. She should have been auf'd this week (then again, she should have been auf'd in the Tiki Barber challenge). Looking at what she has produced, I cannot see how she ever got cast. It had to be about who she knew.

For a moment I wondered if Melitta had started a line of feminine hygiene products.

...and you know, last week I thought of mentioning the fact that a maxipad with a hole in the middle had a pretty basic design flaw, but had a brief, passing moment of not wanting to sound crude. Glad you boys had no such qualms. That's why we can depend on you for news we can use.

But poor Tim, between the 3AM & the maxipad comments, oddball people are going to be asking the very proper Mr. Gunn some embarrassing questions when he does appearances & interviews. He is going to be permanently blushed for months.

I LOVED Chris's dress, I would have voted it the winner over Rami but I think I just don't like Rami as much as I like Sissy Bear. But I'm confused (to quote La Nina) over something. Sweet P got dinged for (among other things) her garment looking like it didn't take any effort. How did Christian exert more effort by glueing Reese's wrappers onto muslin? Or did I miss something during the construction sequence?

I'd be interested to know what you guys think about the Duchess's comment that they have to evaluate different designers differently. In a vacuum, I'd be annoyed by that statement, but I thought it made sense in the context of Chris and this particular challenge.

What do you think?

Chris was the only one to use lettering in an abstract way, which I thought was brilliant (and, yes, very Sprouse-y). This look reminded me of so many of Mychael's (not sure of spelling) competition pieces: clean and uncomplicated and looking just-right, all the way to styling. I'm sure the judging could have gone either way; Rami's complicated design looked impeccably-made, but if the judges had decided to value wearability over whimsy, I think Chris would have had the win.

Maxi-pad. Ha! So glad you guys caught that.

The right person was aufed during the Tiki Barber Challenge ... THE ONE WHO FORGOT TO MAKE A SHIRT!!!!

To say Sweet P has shown "no talent, no technical ability & no taste in any challenge" is simply antagonistic. Or you are watching a different show. Sweet P has not ALWAYS been in the bottom. She actually was praised in a number of episodes for her work.

Regarding the "who she knew" comment ... read her bio to see her more than adequate credentials which got her cast on the show.

It is true that the "tube" is a simple shape, but this dress was not simple to make. If you look at it closely you will see that there are 10 panels on the front bodice and one would assume that there are also 10 panels on the back.
So that means your pattern pieces would be labled something like CF panel, Right Front Side Panel 1, RFSP 2, RFSP 3, RFSP 4, Left Front Side panel 1, LFSP 2, LFSP 3 , and LFSP 4 , and then the same for the back, but "B".
So you have 20 slim panels to keep track of all of them looking very similar but they only "go" correctly in one way on the bodice in order to make it fit correctly. It looks like he fudged Ha) the fit just a little by putting a dart in R and L front side panel 2. But still it is pretty accomplished for such a short amount of work time. It is not the most complex dress ever but I wouldn't call it simple either.

The entire effect of Chris' presentation was fabulous. From the tips of her calf-strapped shoes, to the sophisticated hairdo, to the chic bracelets.

And I think along with Leah, Marcia is a good model as well. No one seems to give her credit.

That looked more like a toilet seat cover than a maxi pad. Tim got the sad part right, anyway!

I agree about Chris, I think he's going to make it to the final 3 (or 4). Sweet P has really grown on me as a person, but as a designer...eh. It's always the same baby doll type dress. You're right, she shouldn't second-guess herself so much. I think she's talented but that's holding her back.

sweet p... oh sweet p... if she's not making sack dresses, then she's making excuses. she seems nice. but she should have been out this week. when nina called her "boring", i thought for sure she was a goner.

Anonymous said...

I'm sorry. Sweet P, much as I like her personally (and, really, her clothes may not be WhAhAhA but actual women could wear most of it), what the HELL was she doing picking that model?

She clumps, is completely listless and if she's not technically anorexic, she does a damned fine job mimicking it.

She simply ruins every outfit put on her and is so disconcerting and disturbing that I spend more time watching her to see if she'll collapse than actually looking at the clothes. Honestly.

And Sweet P actually chose her... and she wasn't even down to the model dregs! For God's sake, she let Mr. Hetero get a great model and she *chose* this one? ARRGGHH.

She very nice, though. And her clothes tend to be less plain than just practical. I'd like her to stay (certainly over Vtrioay), but it would be mostly 'cause she's sweet, even though her clothes in the competition just don't look particularly stylish-in-a-Big-City-way.

However, put her in Bust magazine. They'll love her there.

Anonymous said...

I actually thought Sweet P had the start of something when she was doing the mosaic waist. It was a nice element that didn't jive with anything on Dress Version 1. It wouldn't have worked with Dress Version 2. either but I wonder what she might have done with it if she'd had more of a plan. It was like she made up the dress as she went along.

Obviously, Chris had a plan and it worked.

Sweet P though...oh man. She's adorable but she's gonna get burned. Bad. I can feel it in my gut..or is that cramps?

Anonymous said...

I think Sweet P picked the right model for her look. While she is stickly and awkward, she is girly and sort of makes P's dresses look cute, whereas Kevin's new model would have looked like an over-sophisticated woman wearing a junior's dress.

Note to Sewing Siren: Thanks for all that explanation! I would not have ever guessed what went into something so "simple."

And I will so miss Elisa. Someone so happy and so solid - never attacked anyone - able to absorb suggestions without disdain. No one like Elisa has ever been on a reality show - it was worth all the time watching this just to see her.

And if they are "evaluating different designers differently" - then past work must not count for anything. Sweet P - the Barber challenge - embarassing. And this week just - well - and still Elisa goes...

Nothing will make up for this...but VictorYa going and Chris remaining...that would be nice.

Anonymous said...

But she didn't know what the challenge was before picking StickModel so that's not really a consideration.

And if she really thinks that StickModel would be a good public look for her clothes, then she totally looses my like-on for her.

StickModel has got to go and Sweet P. has got to center herself and stick with a first, good design or she'll be rightfully next to go.

Kudos to Chris for a fabulous, sophisticated, wearable look. Loved the styling. Hope he can edit himself and keep on showing us some great stuff.

As for Sweet P, I agree with Gotham - I have no idea how she was able to get on this show given her lack of talent and technical skills. Everything she's made looks like ass and is poorly executed to boot. I'll give her some credit for the Donna Karan-style dress, which was okay, but seriously, everything else has pretty much sucked. And her wide-eyed panic, her jittery OMG what will I do? act is really annoying in someone pushing 50. Honey, you're not a teen-ager. By this stage of your life you should have a bit more self-confidence. Buck up and act like a grown-up. She may be a sweet person but she really is out of her depth and needs to go home ASAP. And she should take her frightening-looking model with her. That girl looks sickly, has horrible posture and clumps down the runway like a horse. They both need to go.

Red Seven said...

I thought Chris should have won. The challenge never said, "induce whimsy," it simply said to create something believable from these non-traditional materials. And I could actually see Chris's dress on a red carpet somewhere, long before I could see someone wearing Rami's paper skirt anywhere. Chris, you rock -- and in this amateur's opinion, TOTALLY should have won.

And yes, after growing up with a mom and a sister and an often-absent dad (in the Navy, on a ship sometimes six months at a time), I saw my share of maxi-pad liners in the trash, and Tim was right on in that assessment. Love him. Why won't he marry me??

Anonymous said...

Sissy Bear redeemed himself with a fabulous dress! It looked amazing on his model.

Anonymous said...

I don't get those challenges. Tim said it had to be wearable, nothing else... all of a sudden, it's whimsical this, whimsical that...you never know how those judges are going to pick their favorites. It's frustrating for us watching the show and borderline unfair sometimes.

Anonymous said...

I normally don't comment here, but I lurve you guys! I'm moved to say something about Sweet P's model (and I haven't read others so sorry if I am saying something again here)- she is sickeningly thin and it pisses me off that she's on the show since I see it as sort of promoting that type of unhealthy thinness. Thin is fine. Anorexic thin is sick. Shame on them for letting her walk that runway.

Anon at 3:15, I think we all feel Sweet P is in for an iminent aufing (much as we like her personality). StickModel is likely to go with her, neh?

Argh. Now I'm kind of hoping for Sweet P to get the boot this week, just so I don't have to see that model clomp along anymore.

Anonymous said...

If MK's comment about evaluating different designers differently is to be taken seriously (which comment implies that they consider cumulative efforts throughout), then SweetP should have gone, not Elisa. Elisa has sent some decent looking stuff down the runway, SweetP can't really make that claim. This dress is pretty damn awful...the skirt reminded of the elizabethan collar you put on your pet after surgery...

Chris' dress was FABULOUS! I loved how he went in a completely different direction than anyone else and he produced perfection. Go Chris!

Anonymous said...

--e, this is the shame of Sweet P.

She's sweet but:

1. she voluntarily chose StickModel when she had better choices before her,

2. she didn't seem to understand she *needs* a better model considering she's been near-auffed before and it's sometimes the models that save the outfit,

3. you're totally right. Much as I like Sweet P (and she'd be the most likely designer I'd buy from 'cause she's not a fussy designer), the thought of auffing her just to get rid of the model is how I'm feelin' 'bout now.

So sad... .

For reasons not known to me, my heart has wrapped a little wee bit around Sweet P. I will miss her when she is auf'd, which is soon.

Chris did a wonderful job--I loved it. But I think he was in a Catch-22 here. The judges somehow decided they were looking for whimsical confections, so they weren't going to pick Chris for the win. Although if they'd stuck to the original instructions--make something wearable, Chris absolutely should have won.

But if Chris had actually done a whimsical confection, I think they'd have skewered him--or at least ignored him--no matter how good it was. To me, it sounded like Kors was admitting that, from Chris, they were expecting toned down. From everyone else, they were expecting whimsy. A ridiculous double standard, but I'm so glad Chris had the foresight to take this route and produce a beautiful, elegant, yet still very creative garment.

And the way he pieced the top together, there was nothing simple about it--definitely not just a simple tube dress.

As for SweetP's model; the problem with SP's designs are not in the model. It's all SP. Even if you put Nazri in that dress, it would still look like crap. In fact, just picture Nazri walking the runway in that thing. Absurd to even think about.

The difference between SweetP's dress and Elisa's is that SP's was merely boring, while Elisa's was downright ugly.

Anonymous said...

They just didn't want to give it to Chris. I'm sick and tired of these judges worshiping The God of Rami. You know he's going to win it all. Heidi, Nina and Michael practically salivate with excitement every time he's on the runway.

NahnCee said...

I have not been enamored of Remi's winning dress, and do prefer Chris's brown and silver sheath. To me, Remi's dress was beautifully assembled but it was way too frantic -- too much, too many colors, too many gew-gaws, just too-too. The front and back pleats, for god's sake.

Chris's dress was chic. I could see Audrey Hepburn wearing it, or Jackie Kennedy.

Anything that you would describe as being "edgy" is NOT fashionable, and that's what Remi's dress was. Are you listening Jeffrey Sibelia?

Anonymous said...

Chris should have won this challenge. Rami's dress screamed candy (apart from the red plastic bodice distracting from and clashing with the pink skirt) while Chris's outfit was flat out gorgeous that if you looked closely whispered candy. And Nina even admitted it looked like it could be in her precious magazine. I too am starting to think the judges just don't want to give a win to Chris.

Oh, Sweet P, what do I say. She isn't the last button in the bag for once and then picks a model who slouches and can't walk. Strike one. Then she starts a hideous crockery dress with garish color combos Tim tells her to abandon. Strike two. Then she starts again (and maybe even a third time - I've forgotten) and she creates something that Tim correctly says reminds him of a Maxipad. Strike three. And given all the other terrible outfits she's had go down the runway, she should have been gone before Elisa.

Like some others, I took the Maxipad reference to mean the wrapper material, not the pad itself, and he was right. That is what that skirt looked like.

Anonymous said...

Agree 100% about Chris's dress. He did good. Interesting how, although all the regular judges luu-uuved it, Zac felt that it was a little too plain, and had to be told that toning stuff down was exactly what Chris needed to do. In any case, it was beautiful. I would wear it in a heartbeat. (However, I totally think the judges made the right decision in going with Rami's dress -- Chris's was lovely, but Rami's was fantastic.)

But I did NOT agree with the judges' call on Sweet P. She should have gone home. What happened to the cardinal rule, "don't bore Nina?" Sweet P's stuff is ALWAYS boring, and usually poorly made to boot. At least Elisa never made me want to fall asleep in the middle of the judging. I really thought the judges dropped the ball on this.

Anonymous said...

I'm not getting why everyone keeps saying Sweet P's stuff is poorly made. The menswear thing- the shirt- was poorly made, but the tie was fine (sized wrong sure, but well made) and the pants seemed fine too.

I didn't really like her first dress, but it was well done, as was the outfit she made with Elisa. And her dress for the team challenge was well made and finished, as was the dress she made in the weight loss challenge. Then she sends this down and it wasn't great- not well made. But beyond that and the men's shirt, her stuff may be kinda boring but so far it has been well made and finished.

It seems that men's shirt is being appiled to everything.

I was soooo thrilled that Chris did busted that out. It was hilarious cause I felt like saying "Chris, where have you been hiding?" And it was great to see that the judges noticed and acknowledged that the design dealt with previous critique.

gothamtomato typed: As for SweetP's model; the problem with SP's designs are not in the model. It's all SP. Even if you put Nazri in that dress, it would still look like crap. In fact, just picture Nazri walking the runway in that thing.

I respectfully disagree in this instance. How many times have we heard that a model can make or break an outfit? That means a good model can rock a bad outfit out (like Sweet P's) or, you know, sink a bad outfit even lower (like Sweet P's model).

Nazri, if she had worn that dress, would have made it look elegant (if simplistic) in the least or slightly spritey at best. Her skill may have let the judges see any potential that dress may have had.

StickModel did zip. Zero. Zilch for Sweet P's judging assessment. She wasn't elegant, she wasn't whimsical, she listlessly tossed the candy away, she did absolutely nothing to help that dress in any way. She made a ho-hum dress look downright boring and bad.

And Sweet P chose her. Which really makes me wonder if Sweet P actually ever even thinks about how to style her clothes or what kind of image she wants her clothes to project.

If she sticks with this model, she will surely go down next unless someone had a total meltdown. And that's not good since her chances of being auffed are high enough without having to dress up a bad model.

I adore Chris. When he came back I almost - ALMOST, mind you - dropped my cosmo. I was just that damn happy.

Keep the faith, Sissy Bear!

I think Sweet P's model looks cute in the screen cap where she is holding the little bag of candy.

But I am staring at that bodice and wondering about that weird curved seam that is under the bust and wondering why the gathers are below the seam (indicating a bulge under the bust) instead of above the seam (to accomadate bust fullness). Did Sweet P just fold over an unstuffed Hershey kiss pillow? I think she did.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. I think that's exactly what she did.

I love Chris! I didn't think he deserved to be auf'd when he lost anyway. I thought Ricky needed to lose that one. Ricky's outfits ALWAYS look like lingerie, with no imagination that I can see. Does he think there is no other type of clothes for women than little bitty lingerie-type dresses? Chris should have won the Hershey's competition, and truly I thought the first competition was a tie between Rami and Chris for winner. I also would have chosen Chris to win the Tiki Barber challenge.

Yup, Sweet P is fast running out of time. Her first dress actually looked better than this.

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who didn't get Tim's maxipad moment. I never saw any such thing on the floor, so...

Chris' piece was awesome. Only Rami's candy floss dress could've topped it. It certainly topped Jillian's twizzler dress!
