Laverne & Shirley

Her freaky "I wanted Sweet P ALL ALONG." complete with shifty eyes needed only the requisite shrieking violin Psycho music to make the moment complete.

But we told you! Didn't we tell you? We knew there was more to this chickie than simply being "whacky."

Yes, okay. She IS whacky, there's no denying that.

It really says something when biker chicks are scared to be around you.

A couple people have asked us if we think Elisa's "for real" or whether she's playing a character. That's kind of a tough call to make on two episodes alone, but we get the impression she's someone who's completely oblivious to social norms when she's in the middle of creating something.

"Aaaaaand....CHAKRA!"

So she marks her fabric with spit. Sure, that makes great television, but everyone needs to calm down a little. It's not like she wiped her ass with it.

If anything, we think everyone else treats her so much like a character it makes it easy to disregard what she's doing. Is she whacky? Sure.

But the outfit is fucking gorgeous.

Not super-crazy about the colors, but the overall look is pretty and feminine and chic.

Even if you're not a fan of capes, you have to give it up for that dress.

That's just a simple, beautiful design.

Granted, the Elisa story has heavy editing written all over it, so it's hard to break down who did what during the process. We suspect there's quite a bit of Sweet P in the dress - and we're pretty sure she did a lot of the finishing.

But this is twice in a row that an Elisa design belied her "whacky hippy" image. We're not sure whether she's got the goods to stay in the game, but that's part of the appeal. We literally have no idea what she's going to produce next, but we're eager to see it.

"The planet where I am is one that's been trained to respond purely to materials and doesn't necessarily know the language, but knows how to make it work on the body. So, I'm coming to your planet, but with gifts."

Sing it, Puppet Girl.

I really loved her line about coming to our planet "with gifts". I thought it was an odd, funny and unique way to toot your own horn! She is character, even if she isn't a "character".

I really agree with you guys. Elisa's is crazy as could be but it seems to fuel and energize her. Good on her! And I think she's kind; saying that she'd wanted SweetP all along was a way of recognizing that it's hard to be last.

Laverne & Shirley?

LOL. You guys are the best!!

The dress was gorgeous. They did a fantastic job. I'd wear that in a second.

I, for one, welcome our new spit marking fashion overlord!

Elisa is definitely getting the crazy edit, complete with wacky Vincent music, but so far I'm really impressed with what she's done.

I think she's not given enough credit for her abilities because of it. Look at the outfits that she and Sweet P (who ought to be grateful that someone with a name like that and a shitload of tattoos didn't get the crazy edit) wore on the runway. I'd totally wear Elisa's outfit before I'd consider Sweet P's.

Ah crazy cuckoo Elisa. I think she'll be around for a good LONG time. I'm getting way sick of this teal-turquoise color though. This is the second time she used it. But it is a very pretty outfit.

I think she's 2 seconds away from puking on her fabrics though...

Close enough.
The ensemble was kick ass gorge! I hate capes but would wear that 1 in a NY minute. And the way that dress moved... poetry! I really thought it was the winner, though now that I've seen the entire BITTEN line, thanks to you 2 adorable bitches, I understand why it didn't. Elisa's definitely going to Bryant Park. You heard it here 1st.

I live in Santa Cruz, where you can't walk 5 feet without encountering another Elisa. If you're going to cast creative wackos, I much prefer the Elisa type to the creepy uncle Vincents of the world.

I liked the dress (what's with that aqua colour again?) but the cape? Meh.

A gorgeous outfit. And for all she brings the crazy, Elise seemed like a great, collaborative teammate.

However, girl needs to put her legs together when she's wearing a dress to watch the runway.

Elisa is taking up way too much air time - I think Sweet P did a great job dealing with her and probably had lots to do with the outcome of the dress. Please, less Elisa more designers that can use a sewing machine.

P.S You can tell Tim is over her already - I know I am.

Elisa is far and away above all of those people in education, life experience and abilities. Read her bio. She is the "green monkey" of this season, the one all the other monkeys in the forest tear apart because she is "different." Different does not equal crazy. (Think Vincent - now THAT'S disturbed) Any of you out there have lifestyles that are somewhat "different" from those in the red states? Remember that? Please. A little respect and compassion would go a long way here...
And...just as a by the way...her work is beautiful. Is this not what it's about?
"And I think she's kind; saying that she'd wanted SweetP all along was a way of recognizing that it's hard to be last." Right, Anon.

Plus - she can laugh at herself - a sure sign of sanity. Why else the remark conceding coming from "another planet" - but with GIFTS.

This was beautiful. I love the design. She did such a great job with the cheap fabric. It really looks like alot more than $15.

I kind of like that someone can manage to get camera time with out being mean. I believe she was genuine when she said she wanted Sweet P, because there was no interview with her bemoaning "getting stuck" with SP.
I think they worked well together despite the editing.

Since Bitten is for the ‘average American woman’ that dress and cape wouldn't work for SJP's collection, but for the rest of us fabulous bitches that dress is a dream.

I still can't believe they were able to pull this off. The dress is stunning! It moved so beautifully on the runway.

I liked it better than the winning design. Elisa and Sweet P created a dress that looked like a million bucks. Simple, elegant and tres chic.

I'm a cape fan, though, with the exception of my vintage (40s) mink cape, mine tend to be longer and drapier. But it's a great look, perfect for those transitional days, which we get a lot of in Chicago, when you don't know if it will be hot, cold or in-between.

The dress had great lines and great movement/

And speaking of lines, it has been said that there is a fine one between madness and genius. Just sayin'!

Elisa is crazy as a bed bug and she may as well be wiping her ass with the fabric as spitting on it. It's really just as bad in my book. Any bodily fluids on the fabric is nasty. I don't like her, I thought this dress was shiteous and I hope she goes home soon.

True. And that confessional on the runway...sounded like Miss Sweet P was trying to throw Elisa under the bus.

I for one hope that her ticket to Earth is round trip. Granted, the final product was nice, but I really think Not-So-Sweet P had a little more to do with that than what the editing showed.

And boys, don't count your chickens...One day it's spit marks, the next it's skid marks.

I've taken yoga for enough years to know now that Elisa is not putting on an act. And after initially being turned off by her audition video, I have to say I really admired her behavior on this last episode. She was very mature and kind in the face of what seemed like some baiting and teasing by the judges and other designers. She might not have the range to go all the way, but so far her work and her behavior have been excellent. (Except for the fabric poo train, but we're just mentally editing that out for now.)

Haiku, polymorphic...watch out Tim Gunn, here comes Elisa and her fabulous vocabulary : ) I think she's very entertaining and obviously extremely talented. I also agree with the boys and some of you that Sweet P had a lot to do with that dress. Great team work!

I'm not feeling the outrage over the spit. When I learned to sew, we used to put the end of a length of thread in our mouths before threading a needle for hand finishing. It's not as if the fabric is going anywhere near anyone else's mouth.

Anonymous said...

Elisa is a wee bit crazy but she delivers, unlike Vincent or Angela. In the end, you're buying the outfit, not the designer.

Bill said...

Liked the cape, liked the dress. Didn't like the two fabrics together. They just didn't look right together to me - it might have been the color of the dress fabric. But the lines of each piece were terrific.

As for handsewing over machine sewing. Both can be challenging. Both are valuable in different situations. I'm pretty okay on a machine but fairly rough by hand - kudos to anyone who does either well.

I'll parrot bg, gloria, sewing siren & others and say that the coming to our planet but with gifts comment and the way she handled getting Sweet P as last/only choice really endeared Elisa to me.

She's still a whack job. Her descriptions with sound effects slay me. Polymorphic. Huh? But it's good TV.

And the spit marking - HA! It saved my butt this weekend when I was up in the attic installing insulation. Lying on my side across a few joists, measuring the roll to fit the space, carpet knife ready, but I'm crammed under the eaves where I can't reach my arm back to my pocket for a pencil. What do I do? Spit mark it! Thank you, Elisa!!

I still think she's "Vingela." (Vincent + Angela).

And I thought her outfit was awful. That limp dangly scarf thing was atrocious. And the skirt was too short.

The cape was semi-cute, but not with that dress.

I thought Sweet P came off like a MAJOR bitch, and I also thought Elisa was being kind about her being picked last.

The fact that Sweet P turned against her and used Elisa's perceived weirdness to suck up to Tim and the judges just disgusts me. "Thanks Tim, now I don't feel so mean!" Oh STFU bitch!

And personally, I have five kids and was encrusted with vomit for most of '97-'05, so don't get me started on why Sweet P would get the vapors over a spit mark. Please bitch, that's the grossest bodily fluid that's ever touched you? Maybe you've forgotten your biker gang initiation?

Anne

Anonymous said...

She's hilarious, and I agree on the outfit. It was gorgeous! I can't believe it didn't win. I thought her comment about "I wanted Sweet P all along" was meant to be nice, to take the sting out of being the last one picked. It came across a little creepy, but I think her intentions were good.

I wish that Ricky and Jack's creation would have won though, as much as I liked this outfit, because that's what I'd like to wear the most. This was a competition for me too, and I lost! I wouldn't want to wear the winning creation, it's not my style.

Anonymous said...

I agree with your analysis. After all, the fact that Elisa is one of two designers there with the most impressive resume before she came to the show attests that she has remarkable skill and vision.

She is also the most likeable of contestants in a year where everyone seems insufferable. She is clearly aware that the others respond negatively to her, but she doesn't let it get to her. She tries to be diplomatic and nice to her partners (trying to make Sweet P not feel bad that she was last, not elbowing carmen in the face as I would have done when carmen snapped at her as seen in the bonus vids) while still remaining ultimatley unfazed whether they like her or not.

I hope she makes it to the final three and kicks some of these designers down!

Trish said...

I don't understand why this ensemble wasn't chosen. It's a very similar style to Victorya and Kevin's but I fell it is much more woman friendly than theirs. V & K's is a tent that would make any woman over 100 lbs look huge. Elisa & P's has more of a flattering shape which could be worn by a wide age and size range. Plus aren't capes hot right now?
I hope that Elisa doesn't keep getting held back by her kooky image because she has talent.

Anonymous said...

Growing up, I remember sitting for hours watching my mother sew. She created the most magnificient dresses for me. And (GASP!!) I also recall she occasionally used spit marks. Although she didn't claim that it was in order for her to "imbibe it with energy and essence". It was simply because she didn't have 3 friggin hands and didn't trust me with a straight pin or marker.

Jenn said...

I'll take Elisa's gentle-crazy over Vincent's perv-crazy hands down. I don't see her unleashing a torrent of abusive curse words at production over dry cleaning or sexually harassing Catherine Malandrino. Go Elisa!

Jenn said...

For those of you who are bashing the color choice, if i remember correctly Elisa did say on the show that she gave Sweet P the responsibility of color choice.

I believe that Sweet P chose that color becuase there was some blue/aqua in the Bitten Collection. In any case, the outfit was lovely but it would of been out of place in that collection.

Erica said...

The spit *is* a big deal. I mark my fabric carefully with a ruler. It's not so much that it's gross, you just can't get good craftsmanship.

Tee hee, really loved the "skid marks" crack. No pun intended.

Sorry to say, but so far this season is hovering awfully close to comatose. Thank God for Elisa. She's more interesting than all the rest of them combined.

Anonymous said...

Sweet P did seem to be overreacting somewhat, although it probably would be alarming to work under a crazy deadline with someone who is that laid back.

That said, I applaud Elisa for her attitude in general: it's refreshing to have someone the opposite of catty on the show.

Mmmm....I wouldn't put Angela in the same category as Vincent. Vincent was just plain crazy, pervy & nasty. He also produced nothing that even approached interesting or wearable.

And design-wise, Angela did do a couple of nice pieces (that Audrey Hepburn dress being one of them). Aside from that, she was on the receiving end of some seriously nasty (not to mention unprofessional) bullying from Jeffrey, (and to a lesser extent, from Vincent), and I thought she handled it well, considering. The simple fact that she didn't hit Jeffrey over the head with a blunt object, during the Mom challenge, says quite a lot.

I've also met her twice and she was as nice as can be.

Anonymous said...

She's sweet, unconventional and has a great eye. She's also totally barking mad and doesn't have the skill set to finish a run to Bryant Park (you are just not going to be able to hand sew every item in a competition where time is consistently at a premium).

As I recall, Sweet P's sketch for SJP had the bell sleeves, so I assume that's where they came from. They were, in fact, my favorite part of the outfit. Yeah, it did sound like Sweet P was throwing Elisa under the bus a little, but then again, she may have mistaken "spit marking" for "dry cunnilingus" -- take a close look at that screen shot. I get the impression Sweet P spent the rest of the time just totally in shock and trying to stay away from Elisa's tongue.

OH. And I loved the two pieces separately, but don't really see how they work together. and the dress needed about 6 more inches on the length. I think Elisa is "for real," which makes her charming. If it were pushy or braying, I'd have none of it. But I still wouldn't flip about the spit.

Anonymous said...

The dress IS fucking gorgeous, and I love it with the cape, which is very in right now. Gosh now I feel like shopping.

ChelseaNH said...

I love Elisa because she's authentically artsy and organic, rather than putting on a show to impress others (which is what drove me bonkers about Angela). Which is how she handled all the "she's so wacky!" criticism without getting defensive and self-pitying. I don't think she's destined for the finals, but I'd like to see her stick around. The basic challenge of the show -- maintaining your own identity in the face of ridiculous time constraints -- is technically harder for her, with her handmade approach, but aesthetically easier because she understands her own process. If she can work it out, I think she will produce some amazing clothes. If not, she'll crash and burn fast.

Anonymous said...

Spit mark, skid mark whatever...the dress is gorgeous. This is what Nina said on her blog:

"When a dress is hanging at Bergdorf Goodman, it does not come with an explanation! It speaks for itself."

Anonymous said...

I liked the outfit a lot better than I liked the winning design. I even liked the colors; my only gripe is that I think the dress should have been a few inches longer. Other than that, I thought it was pretty and unusual -- my kind of combination!

Re: the spit. I think that Sweet P's horror was less "eeew, Elisa germs!" than it was "Holy shit, I'm working with -- my success in this challenge might depend upon -- the sort of crazy-ass person who spits on clothing! God help me."

Although it was sort of gross as well. But Elisa seems like a very decent person (I also think she said that she wanted Sweet P all along to make SP feel better about being last) and she's got vision, definitely. I hope she sticks around a while.

Anonymous said...

I agree with pretty much everything Gotham Tomato said. I think Elisa is different from the other designers on the show, but she's not crazy. And so what if she hand sews everything? Isn't that the definition of couture as explained in the S3 Paris episode? It may be harder to finish the individual challenges, but if her designs are hand-sewn and lovely then it would be silly to oust her because she doesn't use a machine.

And I too thought Sweet P was trying to throw Elisa under the bus. Not very perceptive given that she's standing out there with what the judges' comments indicated was one of the top designs. And not very nice when Elisa did try to take the sting out of Sweet P being picked last. And if Sweet P picked the color, I wonder if she was trying to sabotage Elisa a little. That seemed like a very odd choice.

She is acting like someone that just moved to Santa Fe, N.M., and is soaking in the vibes from the groovy people. I was there last weekend and there were several women dressed like she does on the show up there or the tacky Santa Fe style. She will need to win in order to afford to live in Santa Fe. I liked her dress better than the one that won. The dress that won looked like an 1950's artist smock and the vest didn't go with it. PPS -- I just hope Elysa is tough enough. The clipped-winged faerie illustrating her PR T-shirt makes me fear for her. I want to protect her and see her triumph over the squares.

PPPS -- I wish we could've seen what fabric she was contemplating before Sweet Pea shoved the teal at her.

Elisa strikes me as someone who has figured out how to make her brand of crazy work for her instead of against her. It's hard to say since we've only had two episodes, but she may be the type that works best in a partnership. She looks like she has creativity in spades, but she might need help with detailing/finishing/meeting deadlines/reality in general.

ok - i gotta give it up to elisa this week. the design rocked. the color choices dont really work for a fall/winter line (sweet p was in charge of picking colors), and the colors dont really work together. but both pieces really looked wonderful. i definitely preferred this outfit to victorya's.

also, elisa scores major points for not taking herself so seriously & for killing it with the hand-sewing. also note that we have yet to hear her say one nasty thing about anyone else on the show. she might be a little wacky, but so far she's been pretty damn classy. spit & all.

Please give her a better nickname than that.

I loved each of the two pieces, but I was very put off by the combination of the cape and the sleeves. I wonder if I'd have liked it better if the sleeves had been open bells...I dunno; somehow that area of the outfit really bugged me.

I'd totally wear either piece, though.

HATED the one that won--the fabric just seemed way too bunchy, like a handful of bedsheet.

As an offbeat woman in her 40s, I was just happy to see two unconventional-looking 40-somethings working together. I wish Sweet P had evinced more confidence in Elisa's work, especially given the good outcome.

I had terrible fears that Elisa would be another Angela, but she's got the goods. Definitely an artist.

Hippies often get on my nerves (at least, in-your-face hippies do), and I was all set to hate Elisa, but ... she's actually kind of cool, if you can get past the dress that poops fabric and the spit-marking and the grass-staining. I thought it was really sweet when she said she had wanted to work with Sweet P all along, whether it was true or not. It was just a very kind thing to say. And the thing about coming to our planet with gifts ... ya know, I think Elisa is weird and definitely a free spirit, but I don't think she's actually, diagnosably crazy (like, say, Vincent). I don't want to go on any long car trips with her, but she's kind of cool in her own weird way. Oh, and her dress was way better than VictorYA's, IMO.

I'm sorry but spit marks are gross!

Please. Just wait till you have kids.

Maybe it's just me, but all the Angela-Vincent-Bradley references are making my head spin. They were all auf'd in previous seasons. Elisa is this season's cup-A-crazy ... and what a spectacular mix of Namaste and What Color is Your Balloon she is! Sweet P can thank her sweet a** she was on Elisa's team.

I'm not a fan of the peacock-aqamarine color, but it was a beautiful dress. I too am reserved about the spit-marking, other people's bodily fluids on the fabric that goes against my skin: not ok by me. It may be fine for marionettes, but I think she would do well to have the courtesy to resort to more conventional marking methods when designing for humans.

Elisa's design is great, and I feel sweet pea's execution was spot on. I do have a huge problem with spitting on the dress... I just dont like it, and I am having a hard time getting passes it. Elisa was lucky the dress was beautiful- if she was in the bottom and admitted she spat on it, she would have been sent packing.

I love sweet pea. I don't know if she will be around long enough to make any real design impression, but i think she is so nice and adorable and seems to be a hard worker.

"I do still wonder if she can use the sewing machine.

Not only do I hope she can use a sewing machine, I'm hoping she talks to it to release it's inner Spirit.

Elisa does seem nice but the way she talks over people could be very annoying. Believe me, PR is going to hang on to Spirit Girl for a long time...you just want to know what whackadoo thing she's going to do next. And that's good TV.

what do you guys think about this model they used?

Elisa may be from another planet, but I'm glad she's here. She's fantastic television, and so far her work has been impressive. Yes, she should have edited the fabric poo (tm La Klum) but the dress itself was beautiful. And this outfit with the cape? Hands down my favorite of the week.

I hope she makes it to Bryant Park. An Elisa collection would be something to see.

I LOVE how threatened all the other designers are by this one. She never studied design, didn't go to design school, taught herself how to create these outfits and yet can crank out a slammin dress on one seam. If she just pulls back a bit she could go all the way. would MUCH rather see her in the final than Christian. That hair of his just looks like it would smell worse than Colin Farrells crotch.

Meloves the "rain goddess!" The kookiest of kookies is the most organic person I've ever seen, right down to the spit mark. What a brilliant dress! It spat genius when it floated down the runway. It should have won! Then again, when you have something as cookie cutter as "Bitten," you have to choose something that will fit in the cookie cutter.

BTW, not one mention of the crap editing of this episode? Did anyone notice how the straps on the front of Elisa/Sweet P's dress were hanging in one shot, then in a bow in another? It wasn't just one shot, it was several shots in succession of the same dress! I had to rewind it 20 times because it was just that freakin' bad!

I understand why this didn't win with SJP, but this outfit was the BEST!

My god, I'm giving Elisa the win!!And Sweet Pea really did come through and help the Fairy Goddess from another planet come down to Planet Earth.

But then Sweat Pea just got plain MEAN at the judging. It's one thing to talk about the difficulty of the challenge and working with someone with different visions ...

BUT, they DID work well together as evidenced by the Gorgeous outcome and even Elisa admitted it.

BUT, Sweat Pea just went for the character assassination at the end. Nasty Biker Girl, even if she didn't spit on the fabric.

Lucikly, the Elfin Waif from Another Galaxy again admitted she was out there and made fun of herself in a graceful manner.

THIS outfit shoulda won ... Elisa might not make it to fashion week, but she has chops.

And Sweat Pea can be evil.

Just sayin-

Sweet P was annoying. Polymorphic is not a difficult word to understand. For a biker, she was damned closed minded. Anyway, Elisa said she spit, but really she meant she used spit to mark the dress (she used her tongue). Unusual, I suppose, but not a big deal. And then when the outfit was done AND beautiful, Sweet P was still ragging on Elisa. I will grant that she did manage to make Elisa see that some sewing techniques are not high-production techniques. I will be happy to see Sweet P go away.
