Frigging Amazing Race. Give us a break. Well, they didn't win, but we have pics!
Heidi in vintage Dior. She wears red on the red carpet way too often. Granted, she looks good in the color, but then again, she looks good in almost any color. Mix it up, girl.
EDIT: We can swear we heard Heidi herself refer to it as "Vintage Dior" when asked, but it's being referred to as simply "Dior" or "Dior by Galliano" in the press today.
And her hair looks like shit.
Heidi is wearing diamond jewelry from her own collection.
Debra Messing wearing Ralph Lauren. Lorenzo hates this dress and thinks she looks like a wedding cake. Tom likes it for its graphic simplicity.
Laura in a dress of her own design, with Tim. Her hair and makeup look great.
Now, before we get into it, let's explain something. Laura was there doing red carpet reporting as part of her gig for MSN's Style Studio and designed a dress with the Style Studio tagline "Dress like you mean it."
She sent us pics of the dress a couple days ago and asked for our honest opinion, which we gave her and which we are now giving to you. We don't love this dress. Conceptually, we like it. She called it her "Carolina Herrera meets Stephen Sprouse" design and from that perspective, it kindasorta works, but we're just not fans of messages on clothing. We'll have more on the dress later when we get more pics and after we talk to Laura. We texted her right after Amazing Race won and she texted us right back from the Emmys, pissed.

Heidi's dress - lovely. heido's hair and make-up - not so much. Laura's dress not so much but hair and make-up gorgeous.
CP
I think Heidi's red this time, though, is such a great red (with more blue in it -- she's usually in a red that's more tomato) that it lets her off the repeat hook. Laura's dress is clever (and she wears it well!), but it's a little bit of a novelty dress. Once is enough.
I'm with you boys, I don't necessarily like the whole words on a dress thing, but the fit is perfect. And Laura's hair, makeup and those earrings... to die for!
Heidi's hair was a mess!
Laura looked stunning, although I don't think the dress really suited her: it's uncharacteristically casual...since she was working the event, the slogan is forgivable.
Laura looks GORGEOUS but I don't like the dress. Heidi's dress is actually pretty, but her hair looks awful!
I think Heidi looked wonderful. When I first saw the photos from the red carpet, I didn't even recognize her. I guess I'm just not as picky as others. Laura looked lovely, too, but the dress...not so much.
Whoever did Heidi's hair and makeup should be strangled with the top of Laura's dress, but save me the skirt, it's flawless!
Although honestly, I love Laura so much that even the dress works for me in and amongst the whole package.
If only she'd loaned Heid some lipstick.
It's a mighty tragedy that some of my fave lipsticks have been discontinued and yet that nasty color lives.
Cheers
Don't love Laura's dress-actually, I like the skirt, but not the top.
Laura, however, still looked smashing.
Love the vintage Dior on Heidi...her hair was a mess...where is Anthony from Shear Genius??? Or Rene?
Thought Heidi looked HOT! Her hair and makeup were fresh and unexpected. Laura-- you are so cool you don't need to spell it out even if they paid you a lot to do it. OK, well, if they paid you a lot then you are forgiven! That would be the only reason to do something like that. WTF about Amazing Race-- how did that happen?
Aw, Stephen Sprouse!! Nice to see him referenced.
Laura's look was risky, but considering that she's not someone people would expect to see at the Emmys, and not everyone will know who she is, it was a smart move to wear something that bodacious - I applaud her for it. I think Heidi looks pretty; only thing is, I hate when makeup makes a person look LESS like themselves (instead of like themselves at their best). The Lauren dress on Debra Messing is so stiff-looking (and not the good kind of stiff).
I think Laura looks fabulous, and while I sort-of agree about words on clothing, I like the idea of this message a helluva lot better than designer logos all over everything. (Just TRY finding a handbag or sunglasses with no logos on them!!) I'm sooo sick of the logos - I refuse to buy them. I think people who cover themselves in logos are idiots who are trying to buy something that cannot be bought.
But the quote...I'm liking it. And it's a different look for her. Plus that skirt looks very flattering for many body types.
As for Heidi's hair-- well, she can get away with it. With Heidi, people would just say, 'such a pretty girl. It's a shame she doesn't own a brush.'
But now, if I went somewhere like that, people would be saying, 'look at that pig, the least she could do is fix her hair.'
Such is life.

....And I almost forgot...Heidi's jewelry!
I have just two words for it: Canal Street.
That's all. Sorry.

Remember Laura's "For Nuts Only" dress? That was witty, sophisticated and playful. I would have expected her to incorporate the "Dress Like You Mean It" tag line into the gown in a similar fashion. The way she did it was too blatant. I don't hate it, but I think she could have done it better.
--Amy
Loved Heidi's dress...but man did she look HARSH! No softness at all. I know its tough to look soft when you've look like you've been chisled from stone, but man, that makeup and hair did NOTHING for her at all!
I loved the Laura Dress...words and all. It stood out and was a great design idea.
"Wedding Cake" is right. One false move and that dress is ruined!
Why can't designers realize that people have to SIT in these dresses?

Hilarious!
I like Debra Messing's dress. It's simple and elegant. It's funny to see Heidi in red all the time now considering that she refused to wear Jay's red dress. I hate the whole let-me-go-with-Dior safe approach. She looks OK. Laura's dress is a bit too much. I love the skirt, though.
I think Laura looks stunning. I'm not a fan of words on clothing, but this wasn't so bad. She made it work.
I thought Heidi's dress was the shit -- not totally feeling the hair, but not totally hating it either. The make-up - eh, it was great in HD and in some pics, not so great in others - so I guess I would have had to see it in person to totally judge -- but the dress, the dress ruled. And as someone else said, the shade of red was different from her usual look, so that totally made it a non-repeat for me.
I liked the idea behind Laura's outfit, and totally understand the rationale - but as great as she looked - I wasn't feeling it -- and I usually love graphic text designs (it's been almost 4 years, but I still find myself using my straight-up awesome Dolce & Gabbana huge handbag that has "Fun Is My Life" emblazoned on the front in orange felt - with shocking frequency) -- just not at the Emmy's - well, at least not for red carpet coverage -- for an after-party, fine -- I just don't know if it was the right look for the Emmy's -- or at the very least, the skirt seemed too formal for the top. But Laura is still the shit - so whatever.
Other than Amazing Race inexplicably winning AGAIN (look, it used to be a really good show - but that ship sailed as soon as they did that horrible "family edition" and then they had the fucking hippie assholes -- and All-Stars made Big Brother All Stars look good. Kind of.) - the Emmy's were pretty surprisingly awesome in terms of who won, but pretty freakng awful in terms of production. Like FOX produced possibly the worst awards show of this caliber that I have ever seen -- and I'm an awards show junkie. Like, as awful as the Grammy's always are - they at least get presenter's names right (though it was great when Katherine Heigl won the Emmy 5 minutes later and they did manage to announce her name correctly both times...still, inexcusable to mis-pronounce a presenter's name - this is not People's Choice - this is the Emmy's) and frankly, from a design aesthetic and total show-standpoint, I expect much more from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences than what FOX gave us.
I am a first time poster, but a long time reader. I liked Heidi's dress but the hair and make up, not so much. I loved the fit of Laura's dress but....not sure I understand what the top meant. Laura looks fabolous as usual, wish I could look as nice as she does. A pity PR ddid not win.
I love Laura no matter what : - )
Freaking Amazing Race? So not fair.
Heidi - I love the dress, hate the makeup and hair
Debra Messing - I hate the dress
Laura Bennett - She looks gorgeous, but the dress, not so much.
Laura's dress EWW. she looks great though.
I saw her behind someone on the red carpet show not knowing it was her, I remember thinking "Eww she looks like Macy Grey only a tad classier."
Heidi doesn't look very good I have seen her look 3000 times better her hair is very very ugly, make up- miss.
Heidi? LOVE the dress - I remember when that one was on the catwalk. I didn't even notice the hair. I couldn't get past the lips. Wrong red, Frau Seal.
Debra Messing's dress is a rehash of a Ralph Lauren she wore to some awards show in 2002 or so. She should have had Emmett design something for her. THAT would be fabulous!
Love Laura's skirt. I even appreciate the top. I'd wear that with ratty jeans as an ironic statement. Or under an Armani style suit. And Laura's makeup looks spectacular!
Laura should have worn her grey beaded gown with the chartreuse belt. I didn't love that top AT ALL.....message or no message.....
She could have done something a little less "in your face" like the "For Nuts Only" dress.
And Heidi had WAAAAAY too much bling on. Less is more girl, less is more!! She is a stunner though.
Sigh....I miss the days of Cher's total over the top Bob Mackie costumes and Meryl Streep looking like shit and giving us something to cackle over on Monday morning. Its the Rachel Zoes of the world taking over. There was nothing quite like some A lister bringing the fug to an awards show!!
And I'd like to add that by 9:30 I wanted to rip off Seacrest's arm and beat him with the wet end. Too bad Terri Thatcher didn't respond "In your dreams you big queen".....
LOL...
not Thatcher
HATCHER!!
Laura, although I still love you, I was not feeling the dress. It was too obvious nd too much. You are Mrs. Fabulous Glam so you shold know better lol. Maybe the statement would have worked on the back of a white tuxedo suit or written on your clutch. But the top was just too much. Your fans still love you though!!!
Didn't see the Emmy's, but PR was totally robbed! There's no way that Amazing Race was better. I watched most of it and it was a mediocre season. The Emmy's had better wake up or just ditch the reality category all together.
Hmmm...Heidi. Loved the dress, hated the hair and makeup and I was most disappointed that her BEST accessory, Seal, looked like a bum. Loved Laura's skirt, looked like something I would/could actually wear, and her hair, make-up, and jewelry were perfection. I'll let her have a pass on the top because as far as I can remember that's the 1st fashion faux pas she's made (IMHO).

Amen, Sister! I think alot of people did pretty well with the fashion last night but I think my fav was the trio of Glenn Close, Kyra Sedgewick, and Mary Louise Parker as presenters; they all looked chic, comfortable, and age appropriate.
Heidi should have realized she needed a bluer red to go with that dress. The jewelry I wrote off as product placement and the hair was unfortunate. That said, she looked the prettiest she has looked in quite a while.
Laura looked terrific. Yes the top was very Sprouse and what is wrong with that? It would have been wrong were she individually up for an Emmy, herself, but in her role as a commentator on FASHION I thought it was a kick in the pants. The skirt was beautiful and in great counterpoint to the top. Laura was beautiful and I want to know if she made her earrings.
Lighten up folks, it is just fashion.
^^^bluer red for her "lipstick", duh...
I actually love the dress! She can really pull it off.
I do not like words on any clothing, much less a formal gown! Words are okay if you are: working the reception desk at a convention, participating in a charity walk/run, etc. I have never understood why people pay money to advertise a manufacturer or put stupid slogans across their butts or bosoms. I appreciate that Laura did this for her show. But it doesn't work. Laura is about elegance and sophistication, and you can't be elegant and sophisticate with your labels showing.
As for Heidi, she needed to remove some of that jewelry. It was too much and too gaudy.
I'm a sucker for provocative juxtaposition, especially when it means inserting one jarring element into an otherwise smooth and elegant look. Too many Ealing Studio movies or something in my youth. So yay for Laura! I love the look and the thought process it provokes.
I am amazed that Laura made a sheer top with the words perfectly placed so you couldn't see a thing... so demure. I agree about the words on dresses thing but if it had to be that way, she rocked it! Also, let's all take a moment to recognize the fact that that body has given birth to like 6 children! Damn girl!
I keep looking at Laura's dress and I don't hate it. I don't love it, but I don't hate it either. It's extremely well made, like everything else she's made. I also agree with some of the previous commenters, she should've done something like the "for nuts only" dress.
Everybody was wearing red. What's up with that?
Heidi's lipstick is always 2 shades darker than it's supposed to be. Her hair looks like a rat's nest. I like the dress, but you can never go wrong with Dior.
Well, I couldn't help but wonder if the kids got into mommy's hair after it was styled, when it came to Heidi.
I don't think Laura should've gone subtler in the "for nuts only" way--I'm reminded of Dirty Jobs being sponsored by Ford--they took the money, but make the sponsorship glory photos (close ups of trucks, Mike Rowe commeting how great they are), that you cannot help but know that they are a sponsor and the obviousness is much more appealing than subtlety.
I see Laura the same way. "You want me to incorporate your slogan? Sure, here you go." We know she has the talent that she could have done the words in slightly off-color sequins, etc so they were classier and subtle, but then people might think she *meant* it, and not that she was forced to by sponsorship.
Thus the different appeal between the "for nuts only" (which she did purposely as a wink) and the very obvious "Dress like u mean it" (which she did because she was sponsored).
Sorry for the long-windedness.
Laura, we forgive you, darling! We know they made you do it. Next time just say 'no'.
Nobody is saying anything about Debra Messing's dress. I liked it. I thought it was simple and very elegant.

DITTO.
I LOVE LAURA'S DRESS.
Just love it. Perfect!
From what I've read and seen about the show I didn't watch, I'd say Sally Field's bleep moment plus Laura's dress must've been just what the snooze fest needed.
Plus - Am I the only one who liked Heidi's hair?
-- desertwind
PS -- I think it had to be "blatant" or not do it at all.
It's sort of Jenny Holtzer, isn't it? Very well done from a graphic point of view.
Funny enough, I think a more subtle placement would've actually read as more blatant and like a logo or tagline or gag.
It's sort of a hiding-in-plain-sight thing now.
I really do like it.
-- desertwind
I love laura! I love her hair, her makeup - sort of love her dress - her shoes. She is fucking fabulous!
DON'T like Laura's dress. And let's face it, folks - if that dress had been on anyone besides the fabulous Bad Mommy, we would be ripping them to shreds.
Heidi's dress was beautiful...but there was way too much frizzy hair on the red carpet. Slick that *hit down, folks!
Could Laura BE anymore fabulous?
I think not.
Same goes for Mr. Gunn.
(Thanks, boys! I didn't watch the Emmy's so appreciate the post.)
Tim and Laura look fabulous together! Bravo, dump Veronica, hire Laura!
I think Heidi looks great, the dress, the lipstick ,and yes the hair, too.
I like the conceptual angle of Laura's and would have liked to see it pushed a little further. Like have the words on a bias angle shoulder to the floor. The sleeves long, but just out of sheer illusion (no words).
Did I read here that she had originally made another dress but it didn't work out, so she made this one? Or am I confused?
Heidi looks gorgeous. I love her dress!
one of my favorite things about Laura is she is such a classy lady witha great sense of humor and wit. While I don't like her outfit as evening wear, I think its cute and fun that she decided to be tounge and cheek about the event and knew that she was there to fulfill a role as a comentator. Bravo Laura for taking a risk and having fun.
Heidi, great dress and makeup...total racoon nest on top of her head.WTF, did she hire a crack head to do her hair.
honesty.not.pc
Kudos to Laura for wearing that dress!
I love Laura's shoes! The woman wears high heels like very few women can.
Laura's first time on the red carpet and THIS is what she wears? LOVE it. That takes supreme and sincere confidence - her greatest asset. Nobody else could pull it off. Laura rocked it.
Tom & Lorenzo,
I am so disappointed in you two. You SAW this hideous monstrosity beforehand you didn't stop Laura from embarrassing herself? Why kind of gay men are you??? Honey, if my best girlfriend showed me that dress and asked for my honest opinion, I would tell her straight to her face that it was AWFUL UGLY HORRIBLE!! DON'T WEAR IT TO THE EMMYS!!
How could you allow Laura to commit fashion suicide like this? She's a laughing stock now. Sure, her delusional hardcore diehard fans will blow smoke up her ass but GET REAL!! Most normal people with good eye sight will be mocking this stupid dress.
Tom & Lorenzo, you let Laura down. You should have been more truthful and not held back.

Whoa, honey--
I'm getting a Chris Crocker vibe...
It's just a dress.

LOVE LAURA'S DRESS -- And I wont even wear LOGOS let alone WORDS. The type has a modern feel, as does the type layout. Extending down the top and on the sleeves. I really like it. Fresh. She stretched herself and for that I say bravo. Ugh. U know what I mean!
I have something very similar to Debra Messing's dress. I bought it a couple years ago from JcPenny and it's the exact same shape but the only difference is the colors are reversed. Although I think mine looks better, lol.
I hope you boys cover all of the dresses worn last night. I'd love to hear your opinions! I loved Portia's dress and Eva Longoria's the best.

LOL. Lighten up, it's just fashion, lighten up it's just fashion, it's just fashion...
I liked her dress. I like beaded gowns :)
Heidi's makeup and hair is a disaster. What was she thinking? The dress is gorgeous!
Laura made a mistake, now Heidi is just tacky. She cannot dress to save her life.

What were they supposed to do? Lock her in a cage?
how about just telling her the truth? that dress is fugly as hell.
the more i look at Laura's dress - the more i like it...
Lauren zalaznick looks like Spock.

Heidi is made up to look like a whore. I agree that Debra Messing's dress makes her looks like a wedding cake.
I adore Laura's dress. I like text when it is done in a way that makes it look like graphic pattern rather than just message.
It had such an "art" feel to it. She brought a sense of cutting edge design to an event that is probably second only to the Oscars for being the most conservative and safe fashion display. And she did it while still looking elegant. It was very Laura.
Laura can't do no wrong. Love her!
I love the fact that Laura got inspired by Stephen Sprouse. How cool is that?
Heidi's hair and makeup look really bad and they said so on E!
Now that Ive watched the videos and seen that Nick also had the slogan on his jacket - I am thinking that this was a decree from msn - not a choice.
So - she did the best with what she had. If they were just letters - it would have been fabulous. Because it's the MSN logo - it's a little less so.
But still - she looked GORGEOUS!
Just imagine that the letters are random - and dont spell anything out.
"Whoa, honey--
I'm getting a Chris Crocker vibe... "
Yeah, I'm getting that delusional Chris Crocker vibe from all these Laura-mates (like the Claymates) who claim to love Laura's fugly dress.
Seriously, people! You're bitching about Heidi's makeup and Debra's dress...yet Laura gets a pass?
Do you have eyes? Come on!! Laura's dress is butt-ugly and wearing this blocked-lettered turd to the Emmy's was a mistake.
"Heidi is made up to look like a whore. I agree that Debra Messing's dress makes her looks like a wedding cake.
I adore Laura's dress."
BWAHAHAHAHA!!! Are you serious? Heidi looks like a "whore" and Debra a "cake" but Laura's dress is adorable???
I want what you're smoking, lady. Or better yet, upgrade the prescription on your glasses.
Heidi looked gorgeous. Debra was flawless. Sadly, it was Laura Bennett who looked like the fool last night. That dress was a joke.
I like Laura's dress. I thought it was different.
Here's how I feel about these celebrities on the red carpet: if you still manage to look like shit even with the help of 50 professionals there's something wrong with you.
Yes, Heidi, I'm looking at you. Unless you suffer from Kabuki make-up syndrome, there's no excuse for that. The dress? IMO, best thing she's ever worn on the red carpet. Not loving Laura's dress. I understood where she was coming from but somehow it didn't work.
Debra Messing? Well, the poor thing tries but usually fails miserably.
I love the picture of Tim Gunn and Laura Bennett. They look so elegant together.
What was Laura thinking?
Laura should've worn her finale dress. That dress is gorgeous!
Tim looks elegant. Laura looks like a clown. All CAP BLOCK LETTERS???? My goodness... what happened to her taste level?
Laura should have worn her own finale dress instead of that obnoxious thing.
Nick: [MSN] thought it would be a "cute" idea if we both designed--and wore--something that said "Dress Like You Mean It", our tag line on our MSN Style Studio segments.
And like most "cute" ideas, it was dumb.
However, I like the way Laura dealt with some marketing dweeb's crass and tasteless idea. MSN wanted her to wear the Style Studio tagline on one of her original creations? Hey, they got it.
Is it great fashion? Is it beautiful? Is it the most flattering thing she's ever worn? No. But I like the aggressive, in-your-face quality of it; it borders on punk. I also think that going large-scale capslocky with the lettering really helps push it toward a bold, abstract pattern, rather than just a slogan.
No, if you want to see bold, abstract pattern and use of graphics - look at Jay McCarroll's designs. He understands that concept and can execute it brilliantly.
Laura's "design" looked stupid and juvenile. This is not her aesthetic - and it's painfully obvious she was in over her head.
You can put lipstick on a pig, but it still stinks.
NO - you're wrong.
If you HAVE to HAVE words on your clothing (god forbid) then she did it right - BOLD CAPS LOCKED lettering. It becomes an abstraction.
Again, I say, if the letters were simply the alphabet we'd be falling all ourselves with praise.
It's the rampant corporate commercialist slogan that's bothering us.
And Im right.
No, it's the serious ugly that's bothering us.
That dress was ass.
A trash bag, technically, has "graphic simplicity." But that don't make it right to wear on the red carpet.
I think Tim Gunn's "lifestylist" might disagree with you on that...
i HATED the top of the dress.
but the skirt was nice.
