Saint Tim Speaks

Wednesday, July 18, 2007 by

Our pal Mo Ryan sat down recently to talk to Tim Gunn about....well, about everything really. Some choice bits:

"The point is not to prescribe fashion rules that apply to anyone and everyone, Gunn and Webb said, but to get people to be honest about their lifestyles and their bodies – and to throw out or give away all those fashion disasters hiding in the corner of their closets."

"Gunn was asked what famous person he’d most like to give style advice to, and he chose an American legend who is also a frequent target on worst-dressed lists."

"I caught up with Gunn after the "Guide" panel and asked him how Season 4 of “Project Runway,” which is already filming in New York and which debuts later this fall, is shaping up. Is there another jaunt to Paris in the works? Gunn wouldn’t say, but he did allow that “we do leave the Parsons studios. I just can’t tell you where we go."

"
Given how famous he is now, can he still go out and about in New York City? “I can and I do,” he said, though he did have one fame-related moment that wasn’t too pleasant on July 14. He was hosting an Outfest event in Los Angeles, where he was mobbed by fans."

You can find out more about the show here:

"There's only one man that any woman would welcome into her closet…Tim Gunn. And he's diving into closets everywhere in the one-hour, eight-episode series "Tim Gunn's Guide to Style" premiering on Thursday, September 6 at 10 PM ET/PT. With tough-love, guidance, and former model and fashion accomplice Veronica Webb at his side, Gunn leads fashion-challenged women on an emotional journey to unearth their personal style. From wardrobe essentials, tips on how to shop, to finding the right fit, Gunn uses advice from his book, Tim Gunn: A Guide to Quality Taste and Style, to arm each woman with the basics to own her look and make it polished and stunning."

"On www.BravoTV.com, users will be able to further utilize the style knowledge gained from "Tim Gunn's Guide to Style" with an interactive "dress up" game and a "get this look" feature. "Tim Gunn SMS Fan Club"

This can't be what it sounds like...

Meryl Streep. It's definitely her.

“It's Meryl Streep,” Gunn said. “She's a woman of incredible talent and intelligence and experience, and her fashion sense must be by design. It's certainly not because she's misguided, and I think her message is, ‘I'm too smart to care about this.’”

I can't wait to see his show!

Awesome!! Another trip!

Gunn, a Washington, D.C. native, also had some pointed words for politicians who don’t dress at least competently.

“I was on Capitol Hill a few months ago advocating for the Design Piracy Prohibition Act, and I can't tell you how many congresswomen and senators came up to me and said, ‘Don't look at me. Don't talk to me. I'm not a fashion person,’” Gunn said. “And I finally said to one of them, ‘You know, you have a constituency that is judging you largely upon how you look. So don't you feel you have a responsibility to project who you think people think you are and want you to be as opposed to saying, 'Well, I can dress like a schlump and no one will care because I'm responsible in other ways.'"

OMG, yes!! What I wouldn't give to have Tim Gunn come to Phoenix and make-under our beloved governor. She's fabulous but she needs serious help in the fashion department.

Oh Tim! He says the silliest things. I'm all for Washington dressing better but if people actually bother to haul themselves to the voting booth they are probably voting on some aspect of the issues more than they are voting on what the candidate wears. A lot of people don't even know what their congressional representatives look like. It is only in big expensive races -- like the presidential level -- that fashion (wetsuits versus cowboy boots) comes into play.

Tim Gunn... Le Sigh! He can dive into my closet anytime, and I mean that with no innuendos at all. He's my hero!

I love a man who says, in casual convesation, "with whom they interact"! I so agree with Tony Kushner: good grammar is such a turnon!

Just tickles me plum to death to see Tim in a really expensive suit .. He deserves the best after so many years of cheapskate Bravo ASKING FOR THE BANANA REPUBLIC SUITS BACK !!!!

Not many people deserve the upside of fame more than Tim Gunn.

It's always nice to hear what Tim has to say. He's my hero too!

“Runway” fans spoke with one voice, which said, loud and clear, “It’s not ‘Project Runway’ without Tim Gunn.”

Absofuckinglutely!

I adore Meryl Streep, but she can't dress for sh*t. Tim should invite her to be a guest on his show in the future.

I heard that Tim's next project is to write a book advising men.

Who cares what Meryl Streep wears? She is a very talented actress. Not everything has to be about fashion.

I'll definitely be watching.

Thanks for the links, guys! Veronica Webb looks great in that picture.

LOVE TIM GUNN!!!

His celebrity make-over is Meryl Streep (I read it in an interview in the Chicago Tribune). He adores her, and thinks she dresses the way she does to show that she really is above such things. And perhaps she is! But it would be fun to see what he would do with the old broad! (Really, let's start calling her Dame Meryl Streep. She's earned it!)

La Streep is a great actress, of course. But think of what happened when the fabulous Helen Mirren switched from her seriously wacky getups to sexy, yet appropriately grown-up, good looking clothes that fit her well... oh yes, and she also had a user-friendly fantastic role which she performed superbly... but still. She became the hottest old dame on the planet! Wonder if Tim had something to do with her transformation?

There was a huge article on Tim today in the Bay Area Living section of the Oakland Tribune. I saw it on my way to work but didn't get a chance to read it.

I hope he doesn't get too famous.
