One we loved and two we absolutely HATED

Y'know, we've given Andrae a lot of grief in the past, but credit where credit's due, this is a really beautiful dress.

It's feminine, chic and understated, which is ironic because we wouldn't have used ANY of those words to describe his previous entries. It's also beautifully fitted. The bodice hugs her just enough and the skirt flows beautifully. Kudos to him for not going overboard on the detailing, offering just enough sparkle to bump it up without overwhelming.

We love the trim on the bust and the double straps too (although they don't look so hot from the back), which could have come off gimmicky but doesn't . The way the fabric gathers and droops in the back is sexy and makes this as much a "walking away" dress as it is a "walking toward" dress. Nice job, drama queen.

JESUS.

What a stunningly ugly dress this is. Zulema, enough with the white and black. It's boring as hell. The leather is too heavy to be paired with whatever that fabric is she used for the rest of the dress. We kept thinking poor Rachel was going to fall over.

It's once again an amazingly poorly constructed garment. Amazing because she's still in the game after sending so many half-assed (or in one case, full-assed) garments down the runway. Not that perfect execution would have saved this dress. It's an ugly design no matter how well it's put together.

A simple "Jesus" won't suffice here. We're afraid we're going to have to call down Mary and Joseph on this one too.

Let's get this out of the way first. We really feel sorry for Marla. She's in WAY over her head and she knows it. We can't remember when she said it but she admitted at one point that she'd never seen the show before. We have no idea what she sells in her boutique or whether it's any good but based on her work on the show, she is, sorry to say, not a designer at all.

Because a designer (at least one competing in a design competition) would have never attempted what she did here. It's really stunning to look at the two dresses side by side. They're almost indistinguishable.

And God, Marla. If you're going to rip off a dress, at least rip off a dress that isn't hideously ugly to start with.

We met Marla once and she's a very sweet, friendly woman, but she never should have been allowed to stay after this. As ugly as Lupe's dress was, it was in fact, Lupe's design and that should have counted for more because as we said, this is a design competition, not a sewing competition. And frankly, Marla wouldn't even have been able to win a sewing competition. It's harsh (and we're surprised SeƱora Harsh herself didn't say this), but she really does not belong here.

It's amazing how much prettier Marla's model is without makeup versus how she looks on the runway.

And Andrae should have one for this challenge. It was perfect.

one = won...

Where do you come up with these little bon mots? I'm stealing this one and using it. Riotous.

Oh Bill, what coincidence! I was going to say exactly the same thing, well, maybe not 'bon mots' part, but I'm definitely adding this to my own linguistic repertoire, You bitches KILL!

If you hadn't said this, I would have.

Beyond that...I recall wondering, at the time I watched this, if the reason Marla stayed and Lupe was sent packing was because of the attempted manipulation on Lupe's part. She seemed to make an effort to let Nicky know about Marla's copying. And face it, would that spoiled skank have remembered the dress if Lupe hadn't brought it up?

Not that Lupe is the only person to attempt to manipulate. It's just that she's so bad at it.

It's really frustrating to see how often some of the best (Andrae's) and worst (Zulema's) just seem to fly right under the judge's radar. After being called on the carpet a few times, it would have been nice to hear Andrae get a little credit for this one.

And how could Zulema send so many clunkers down the runway without getting called to task? And why does she do such a bad job styling her model?

As for Marla, I think this is one of the greatest mysteries of PR (forget missing bobbin cases, illegal patternbooks, cheating allegations, etc). Why would anyone creating a Nicky Hilton portfolio, to showcase her supposedly "exquisite" taste level, choose to use such an atrocious example as that black Chloe dress? A shot at humor? A trap for the designers? And how could Marla have ever believed it was a good idea to copy that dress?

Gawd, Marla. Another epi I will never understand. I think they went with L'Orange on this one, although when I first saw the portfolio (sorry, dossier) I was thinking "what was she thinking?" about the Chloe dress. Just an eyesore. She should have copied the red one.

I love Andrae's but it reminds me of the dirty water dress. Might be the same fabric. Might explain some things....

Sorry if that was spoilerish. If you're new to S2, carry on!

You can tell I'm hideously bored at work by the rapidity of my posts these days...

You hit the nail right on the head three times in a row, PRGayBoys!

Andrae's was lovely and classy, IMO. I'd forgotten all about it. Zulema's -- as usual -- was butt-ugly and badly sewn. That poor Rachael! Z's blamed her all along the show for her "poor walk", "poor presence", poor everything, when back in the models' backroom, the girl was probably griping about her bad luck in landing THAT designer!

Re: Marla, I couldn't have said it better. Not only did she copy an ugly dress, she refused to listen to Tim when he pointed it out to her. Much as I dislike Lupe (second only to Z on my hate list), Marla should've gone home on this challenge. I just don't get the judges sometimes. It's not even as if she was good TV, she was boresville personified.

That picture of Tim holding the dossier is priceless.

Gosh, I didn't like any of them. Zulema's was a joke; Marla's was a cheap knockoff; and I thought the fabric Andrae used was a little tacky.

The styling on Zulema's model is terrible too. The hair and make-up are ugly and all wrong. Seriously, cover up the model's face and the dress looks just a little bit better.

Isn't this the dress that poor Rachel was glued into? In the reunion episode I think they show the shoulder straps being glued directly onto Rachel's skin.

Speaking of: "Poor Rachel!" Has ever a Victorian heroine suffered such misadventures as poor Rachel! It'd be a wonderful novel: The young girl visits the big city ... and is stripped of virtue as she is sent down the runway with her ass showing, and then suffers further as she is glued into her dress by the Cruel Dressmaker.

But wait, here is Uncle Nick in a barouche to save her.

Wow, chacun a son gout! I thought that the jersey material that Andrae used made it look too much like a little girl's nightie. And construction aside *ahem*, I thought Zulema's was fierce. It's flattering, it's unique without being a float in a parade, and it's fun & sexy.

haha!
Yay, Andrae. Good job on this one.

Andrae could have left off the sparkles on her NIPPLES!!!!

RE: Marla. Before Tim mentioned the similarity to the Chloe dress, the bodice was exactly the same. Marla then went back and changed it. Oh, and Marla's model could do without the dark eye make up and she needs to eat a sandwich once in a while.

RE: Zulema. Yet again....blech. Rachel took so much crap for having a marshmallow ass (which we never should have seen in all it's glory, thanks to Zulema) but it looks like a number of the other models have the same problem. Rachel's ass just got more air time.

RE: Andrae. The dress isn't all that interesting in still shots, but it really livens up when it's in motion.

LMAO! That dress was spectacularly ugly! (Both the Chloe dress and the copy.) And Marla originally had an exact copy; she added the little triangle of fabric in the center later, after Tim told her she had to do something to make it different.

And I also thought Zulema could have been out for this mess. I suppose IF she had used a different fabric and IF she had sewn it better then maybe it wouldn't have been so bad.

And Andrae created the perfect party dress for a jet-setter; it can just be thrown into a bag. I think his choice of fabric was really interesting. I can really see Nicky getting vaysted in this dress.

Is it just me or does anyone else get the impression that Zulema hates Rachel and wants to scratch her eyes out and/or embarass the hell out of her? The way she has that poor girl styled every week (especially around the eyes) is freakin' weird.

Anonymous said...

I could never understand why Marla didn't see the similarities in her dress and the Chloe until Nicki pointed it out. Tim had practically begged her to change it-twice-and one of the other designers had asked her why someone would buy a copy of a dress they already had. Yet she seemed completely oblivious. And it paid off!

Loved Andrae's dress, but the model's (can't remember her name) tat is a bit of a distraction.

I think this dress should have won but I think that after his melt down, Andrae had a cloud hanging over him from which he cannot escape.

I'm in complete agreement with you, brilliant.

Rachael's styling gets worse with each challenge. I actually thought the girl was very ugly until I saw the Reunion Show and realized she was quite a pretty girl!

Re: Marla and her decision to keep doing what she was doing against everyone's advice, I believe she was simply numb with panic and could only focus on finishing something, anything. The poor woman was hopelessly out of her depth. I agree with whoever that she should'nt have gone beyond the semi-finalist stage in the screening process. Wendy Pepper was actually a much better designer than she was, and that's saying something!

Maybe Marla worked in the industry for a long time. Usually when a client brings you a garment and says I want something like this, them mean copy it exactly ;).

I thought that plagiarism is an absolute no-no!

So there's an exception to the rule I guess: copy=bad unless the alternative is complete garbage.

Well then, I think it's quite clear what must be done 'round here...

From now on I'm just going to copy Gotham Tomato's posts.

Marla should've been aufed. Her dress was an exact copy of what Nicky was wearing in that picture.
