How much fun is this? We get to talk about Uncle Nick!
More specifically, Uncle Nick's dress, which was a major contender for the win.
And Tarah! Fabulous and HOT!
Nick being Nick, this was well tailored and dyed a gorgeous, rich color. The proportions on that jacket are perfect.
And the dress itself was appropriately (for Nick) goddess-y and red carpet-ready.
With some sass and sexiness thrown in. All in all, a perfect encapsulation of Nick's style and skills.
Then there's Diana who...ohmigod could she be any sweeter? All we can think is "Honey, fashion? They'll run you through a wood-chipper, poor thing. There won't be much of you left after those bitches get done with you."
Except...y'know, she's got a really interesting point of view. We love that collar. It's dramatic and it's different and she didn't go too far with the concept, stopping at just the point where it still looks recognizably like something a lot of women might wear.
The dress itself wasn't particularly well-fitted and it was pretty plain. The detachable skirt wasn't a bad idea in theory. Done well, it could have a lovely kimono-esque quality to it, although there's no real reason to use magnets except as a gimmick.
It didn't help that her choice of color was drab. It wasn't the most well-executed garment on the runway but it did have that little spark of creativity that made you stop and consider it.

I didn't remember how GORGEOUS uncle nick's dress was. It blew me away looking at the pictures now.
So agree with what you say about Diana - she has such an original POV.
CP
As a former Aerospace Engineer, Diana's POV is right up my alley. But I think she tried to hedge her bets w/ the outrageousness of the cut of the neckline, tempering it w/ a neutral (drab) color. In such instances my instinct would be to just go for the hokey doke and make it all as outrageous as possible. As for Diana's sweetness, the science biz can be pretty intense as well (i.e., the Astronaut love triangle-- I told people on the outside how intense and competitive geeks are. No one believed me until now); Diana needs to toughen up no matter what her chosen field.
Loved Nick's--it really sucks that they didn't have a couple of the best ones stay out on the runway for the judges to discuss--I'm sure Nick would have been there.
I have to disagree about Diana's though. I thought the bodice/collar was interesting, but it went too high up the neck to look really attractive. Sure, she's sweet and she had some creative ideas, but the poor execution and the bad color choice just made this one a mess.
nick gets an A+
Diana . . . oh, honey. That isn't a collar, it's a creeping fungus. It's horrid. There's not enough $$ in the world to convince me to allow that growth up around my neck.
I wouldn't leave the house in that horror, which looks malignant and as if it needs to be quickly scheduled for cryosurgery.
Ahem . . . I did not particularly like it ;-)
I was wondering if anyone knew how Nick managed to create the subtle stripe in his fabric?
Nick knows the how to enhance a woman's body like very few of them. Diana has a unique and original point of view, not everyone will like her designs.
I love the back of Nick's dress. Very sexy!!
I love Nick's design. I love the jacket and I love love love the dress, but I'm not sure if they should go together. Nick was one of the best things of Season 2. I love Uncle Nick!
Love, love, LOVE Nick. I've met him & he is just as nice in person as he is on the show.
And I've seen his clothes in Emmett's store. They're terrific.

The moment I heard Diana say "The magnets must have reversed polarity" I instantly fell in love with her.
Oh, I forgot what Nick's dress looked like without the jacket. It was certainly dramatic, but I kept thinking, "Would I think it was anything special if it weren't that beautiful color?" But I think was still one of the best.
I think Diana's use of magnets was more than a gimmick; if they had worked it would have been a much more convenient way to attach the skirt behind you than trying to use a button. I guess it was too late to add Velcro at that point?
And, to echo another comment, why were there no other top designs kept out on the runway? They all seemed to be the worst except for Santino.
When I saw Nick's ensemble, the concept, color and construction were such a striking combination I thought the judges would have given him the blue ribbon for first place.
What respectable woman would want to be seen in a 4H sewing project like Diana's (outside of a trendy art opening). The nerdy girl's gimic didn't stick and the over skirt was falling off the model. I would have thrown her off the runway for that root system decoration around the neckline.
Nick made muslin look like silk. Nick won me over, love his gay talk!
Thanks guys for blogging season 2, it was my favorite season. I can't wait to see how you cut all the designers to ribbons!
Oh, Nick. Back when I actually liked him. This was definitely a lovely, striking first piece, though I thought the jacket was more interesting than the dress underneath.
Diana's dress was really interesting in concept, but failed somewhat in execution (and not just with the magnets failing...there's a slightly clunky, unfitted look about the whole outfit.) Even so, I'd have kept her just for her viewpoint.
Diana is soo sweet! I cracked up when she said "The first time I saw a naked person was in class when I had to draw them.." and then she went on about how they probably pulled the people off of the streets because they smelled bad.
Diana is adorable! Extremely creative and innocative. I love how she melds fashion and technology. I heard she's designing accessories for Ipods and Computers. Right up her alley. Clever girl!
Nick is my favorite. I love everything he makes. This dress is beautiful.
so they had only ONE one of the best(santino) this episode?
i found it weird...
well, diana's dress is quite interesting, and poor shannon had to save that. but she is so sweet to say "no, it's not your fault(kiss*)". lol.

when is that happening? i didn't remember that, can you tell me? that's funny.
well, the polarity of the magnet...i don't think it reverses THAT EASILY?! it's kinda unusual to happen.
i thought she means the magnet keeps rotating and not staying in the right side in the fabric so it's hard to make two magnets stick toghther.
then why didn't she just reverse the magnet inside-out? we all know that a magnet has an N and an S, there couldn't be only one N or S.
so it's kinda weird though.
and she was just so careless to forget to bring a backup magnet.
i saw on the net that diana had a dress on the cover fo I.D., not the fashion magazine i-D, but the industry- design magazine!(but i kinda forget how to tell the difference of the names) that's pretty cool.
Diana reminds me of Issey Miyake. She thinks differently from the more orthodox designers. Her designs may not have yet matured enough or ever be sold at a department store, but it's certainly intellectually interesting.
Nick has that Latin sensuality going on in every piece he designs. It's a total "sexy is back" vibe.
Diana's dress is one of my favorites of all 3 seasons. I just love it.
And her.
BPR had a link (ages ago) to story about Diana & 2 other women winning this (Yahoo?) contest. An all-nighter thing where they designed a purse with webcam that instantly uploads pix to your website.
Or something like that... It was a cute bag, too.

Talk about bringing sexy back. Love the rear shot of Uncle Nick's creation.
I hated Diana's. The neckline reminded me of some sort of growth. And I didn't find the magnet thing attractive at all.
Love Diana, love the outfit. I just rewatched all of Season 2 to prepare myself for your blogging, and actually found Nick rather unlikeable this time around, but he did well for his first showing.
diana brings a different point of view, which is a little bit interesting, maybe needs time to mature,
but, Tim Gunn at somewhere-article said that Diana is very smart and other thing..i forgot.
she did win the yahoo hacker day. interesting.
The magnets didn't "reverse polarity"; that's ridiculous. They either flipped over inside the hem, or, more likely, they just weren't strong enough to hold the garment through movement.
Nick's dress is very sexy and very Latin. I love it.
