Congratulations Chloe!

We will (of course) have PLENTY of things to say in the coming days, especially when it comes to ripping the collections, but we just wanted to hew to PRGay tradition by starting off with the requisite congrats.

We know a lot of people don't agree with Chloe's win (Tim included, apparently), but we're prepared to defend it. As we said, we'll be ripping the collections thoroughly, but as a way of summing it up, she won because she really demonstrated to the judges both that she knows what she's doing as a businesswoman and she knows what to do to make fabric look great on a woman's body.

By her own admission, this was a "fantasy collection," so even though quite a bit of it was more over-the-top than we're used to seeing from her, it functioned as a sort of personal as well as professional statement for her. "I know what I'm doing and I LOVE what I'm doing."

Sure, you could argue that her clothes looked like upholstery or like a prom with a Dynasty theme and there were certainly plenty of things we had problems with - didn't love her "color story" and didn't love the prints she chose - but of the three collections, hers was the strongest, the most well-executed (PERFECTLY, in fact) and the most cohesive. Couple that with a demonstrated business sense, and the choice of the judges was clear.

And they were right. Chloe is arguably the most successful out of the three winners so far and her career trajectory since the finale aired has been nothing but a steady upward climb. She worked her ass off to get where she is and she'll continue to work her ass off to get where she wants to be. If we wore hats, we would tip them right now.

You go, tiny girl.

I can't see how Tim could disagree... At the time of the runway show he didn't consider Daniel V's collection a winning collection, and noted that Santino had some developing to do as a designer. So was Kara Janx supposed to win??

Anonymous said...

Yeah...who did Tim think deserved this win? I had not heard that he didn't agree with Chloe taking the cake. Can someone fill me in? Thanks.

I hated Chloe's collection, but it was the most "cohesive" so I can live with it. None of them were particularly interesting, except Kara's. I wonder how Kara would have done if she was really in the competition? Would she have sent a bunch of black tank dresses down?

Tim was quoted not long after the finale as saying that the judges were leaning toward Daniel when suddenly Nina came out of nowhere with a long soliloquy about the wonderful Chloe and everyone made a hard turn in her direction and declared her the winner.

Eh. Based on that criteria, Laura should've won S3 then.

Santino's show was gorgeous.

Could they really have given it to Daniel V-for-Vapid? Please.
Chloe won because she was the total package, which has not been the case in Seasons One or Three. And now she's reached that pinnacle of American pop culture success: QVC!!!

Seriously, Chloe had it all. The talent, the experience, this business finesse, she's going places. Every garment she made was beautifully constructed and classy and she didn't screw around with making an outrageous statement.

Maddie <3's Chloe!!

If I remember the podcast correctly, it wasn't that Tim didn't like Chloe's collection, it was the discussion between the judges going "Daniel - Santino - Daniel - Santino" and he was sure one of them would win, just not sure which.

Then Ninagarcia started rhapsodizing about Chloe's collection and the "you're right, you're right" comments started to flow... and the rest is history. I believe Tim's ending was, "So... Chloe won! And deservedly so."

Tim has made some less than complimentary comments about Chloe's collection in the press since the episode aired.

Amen! I was on vacation when the finale aired, and my incredibly understanding spouse taped it for me. I was surprised, but thrilled that Chloe won-I really thought it was going to be Daniel V.

I liked Chloe's collection-enough with the upholstery comments-it was cohesive,beautifully made,and flattered women's bodies(note to Santino-you might try this).
She's a smart businesswoman, and has been a very classy winner.

Who would I want to watch on Reailty TV? Santino

Who would I want to hang out with & run around hip NY with? Daniel V.

Who would I want to be in business with? Chloe

It wasn't a dramatic or exciting win, but it made perfect sense to me.

Chloe may have been the clear winner due to her business prowess, but the girl needs to make better fabric choices. That shiny shantung looked like my prom dress ca. 1980. It was ass then and it's ass today.

I really liked Chloe's collection. It looked like a "real fashion" Bryant Park collection. I think she deserved to win.

I liked Chloe's work throughout the season, but I must say that her final collection didn't really "wow" me. A few of the pieces looked really shiny and not in a flattering way. I am glad that she won, and I think Daniel's collection was viable, and Santino's work really came a long way from what he was showing throught the season (I must admit, he sort of surprised me! he does have the potential to make really beautiful pieces). I am also glad that Chloe won because of her business acumen. She took the win and definitely ran with it. Look where she is now! She is probably the most successful PR designer because she has the creative talent AS WELL AS great business sense (Jay and Jeffrey...are you listening?)

Cheers

I'm not crazy about the fabrics she picked, but her collection was beautiful, and Grace looked gorgeous in her dress. Congratulations, Chloe, and good luck tonight!

I did not like her collection for the oft-stated reasons. I thought Santino's collection was boring. I thought Danny V. deserved the win. But it's not a huge thing; he wasn't robbed.

So who can tell me why Danny V was shown driving the butt-ugly Saturn down to sketch in Battery Park all during Season 3? I thought he was the winner, until Chloe's name was leaked here a few weeks ago.

Finally, I would like to thank the PRGayboys for their tireless work here. You could have slacked off, but your comments late into this season were just as hilarious and perceptive as back with "Earth is swallowing me up" Vincent, or Season 1. You made me buy those DVDs, and I haven't regretted it one bit. Finding this blog after googling the first episode of S3 made all the difference; I would never have stuck with this show without you. Without you, they're nothing!

Danny V had more pieces that I liked, such as that ivory coat and the outfit with the pleated skirt and well, lots of them. Even Santino had a few dresses that were kinda nice, although lots of fug. But I was sure Kara won when I first saw the images. So sad she was the decoy. I basically hated every piece Chloes sent down. So, so fug. But it's nice to see the woman win once in a while.

Santino's collection was pretty much disqualified based on fit, in my opinion. I mean, come on, the one dress had the bodice like, three inches too high.

What did Tim actually say? The podcast sounded fine. I want the dirt! Gimmie Gimmie!

Anonymous said...

Agreed.

PS - Grace! That was it for me.

PPS - Her styling was best of the 3. By far.

PPPS - Kudos to Dirty Diana, too!

Chloe did a great job. Whether or not her dresses suit one's specific tastes, she still did a cohesive, well-executed collection that shows who she is a designer. I'm not that enamored of shiny fabric, but I still thought the underlying designs she did were beautiful. Santino and Daniel both had major execution issues and they both collections lacked a cohesive theme. Frankly, I thought they both did pretty boring collections which didn't reflect any real point of view. Season Two clearly produced the weakest collections of the three seasons, but I thought Chloe's was the strongest of the three, and I was thrilled when I saw that she won.

Tim's comments about Chloe's win are here...

My issue was: where is the concept? Any designer in any field knows you can't just say I'm doing this because what I dreamed of. Clients would laugh you out of the room and your design suffers. Get an idea, get inspired by something, create a person who would wear your clothes. Her collection's age range scattered from a mini dress to something that's classic mother of the bride. It was monotone in that it lacked sportswear.

It's just like Santino said, she's a good dressmaker, a good business woman, but not a designer.

Here is the abstract from the Chicago Tribune article, comments from Tim Gunn:

On why and how Chloe Dao won Season 2: "The runway deliberation went on for two hours. I was sitting with the legal department [of Bravo], and we were whispering, going 'It's Daniel [Vosovic], it's Santino [Rice], it's Daniel, it's Santino.' About an hour and 40 minutes into this, [judge] Nina [Garcia] goes into this rhapsodic soliloquy about Chloe and her collection. ... It was going to Daniel, and [Nina] turned everybody around to Chloe. It was the most remarkable thing I've ever seen."

As mentioned above, sounds like Tim was surprised based on how the judge deliberations were going, not that Chloe won, at least in this article.

Agreed that Chloe was the right winner of the three ... but oh was this collection dreary. Hate that Kara was the decoy as that one had my heart.

Whoever called him Daniel Vapid should be ashamed of himself! That's spot on and hilarious.

Did not care for Chloe's much either, but am glad she won--I admire her work ethic.

The only thing I have not seen in all three seasons is Kara's collection. I keep hearing it was interesting, so I can't wait to see you guys give it the treatment.

I feel like this season had the weakest collections. The collections from both seasons one and three were a lot more..inspired. I guess that's not the word but you could just see a clear point of view/aesthetic with all of them. I feel like this season, although many pretty garments were put out, was very bland.

Anonymous said...

I was a big Chloe fan during this season, but I wasn't in love with the final collection. My 80's prom dresses looked better than these. But I still say she deserved the win considering the competition and I would buy her entire QVC line, if my credit cards weren't maxed out already.

Anonymous said...

Chloe's collection was ass. If you read the whole Tim interview from the Chicago Tribune, he essentially agrees, calling it Dynasty-esque and couchlike.

Anonymous said...

I have to say I dislike Chloe's fashion week collection, but they gave it to her because she had the best chance of being a success. With that true, why did they even have a final, we could have chose her long before the final if that were there criteria. We all knew DV was too young, and we all knew Santino was too snooty about who he would design for to run a real business.

Her collection was cohesive, but it was so DONE. It has been done and seen by so many others, why are we repeating this stuff? Season 3 was great up until the final show. I think personally all 3 bombed, and if Michael had been in their season, he might have had a chance at taking it all. And Laura would have definitely won.

1. I love chloe and santino's collection,

2. despite some pieces of them.

3. daniel's collction is awful in design and execution.

4. dan' model rebecca looks fat from the back.

5. some people like daniel and santino just because they love to play cute.

6. tim didn't congrate chloe in the winning scene. because he (in the future report) says he hates the result.

7. model allison in santino's red hard-walking dress is clever to swing the dress at the end of the runway.

Thanks for all of the explanations re Tim and Chloe and the deliberations over the winner.

I don't think that I'm alone in this but my favorite piece from Chloe's collection was the 13th, which was basically designed and executed by Diana.

Dearlings,

I wore my Chloe dress Wednesday night and it was a HIT! The QVC pieces are adorable and will hopefully make her shitloads of moneyl

As a Dao grrrl from day one, I hope the QVC gigs make her millions. She deserves it.

"It's just like Santino said, she's a good dressmaker, a good business woman, but not a designer."

I'm sorry but that is ridiculous. A dressmaker (generally) is a person sews for other women. They may , but usually do not, make the pattern. The dress design is brought to them by the client. This is a skilled profession that is rarely seen these days.
I actually thought Santino said something along the lines of "She (Chloe) is just a patternmaker." which, is also absurd. A patternmaker is also a highly skilled and paid profession. A pattern maker makes patterns based on a designers sketch or a garment that has been draped on a dress form.
Chloe is a *DESIGNER* who is also very skilled at pattern making and sewing. Which in IMHO makes for a much better and more independent designer.

Anonymous said...

you know, i am always troubled by that 'dressmaker'/'patternmaker' comment. it seems only women somehow receive it, whereas whatever a man wants to place on a woman's body is some sort of glorious art.

Jenn said...

Anonymous 2:20, I couldn't agree more

Anonymous said...

I thought I would post this here, but it isn't really relevant, but I was just watching "what not to wear" and the current make-over recipient bought clothes at EMc2!!!!

Anonymous said...

The most shocking thing an artist can do is to be completely true to the heart.

When that small, wonderful woman got up there and exhaustedly described her clothes as an "immaculate conception," I believed her. I saw no attempt to dilute or explain her vision -- this was as magnificent and focused as anything Ralph Rucci might do on a miniscule budget.

Consider how much more punk rock it is to do these clothes, which are confrontational and unexpected, rather than "punk rock" clothes, which can be immediately understood (cf. Jeffery, and somewhat Jay). You can disagree with almost everything, and yet must admit her creative force is entirely admirable. In addition, her execution is jaw-dropping, and her color story, though odd, still puts Grace in an amazing blue-green.

This collection was better than PR had any right to expect, and constitutes a real fashion moment. I will be greatly surprised if the show ever produces its equal.

Me too, good for her!

Chloe PWNED the other guys.

Let's see where they are now:

Chloe is still designing clothes for women, she has a thriving successful business, she has signed a lucrative deal with TARGET, and she selling clothes through QVC that is easily accessible to us. Proof is in the pudding, bitches. Chloe is the winner here.

Daniel V is still struggling to find his way. He seems to make public speaking appearances mostly. Designing? Not so much.

Santino is a loser who disappeared after this show finished. He was a reality TV clown. Not a real designer.

Anonymous said...

Santino dismissing Chloe as a "pattern-maker" is such a joke. This is the same Santino who can't sew and sucks at construction and dresses women like fat turkeys and black forest cakes. C'mon! Everything that comes out of his mouth is pure crap.

I really wish Kara or Emmett could have shown at Bryant Park instead of that clown Santino.

Anonymous said...

I agree with you guys...again! I almost lost a few friends over my support for Chloe. There were Dan fans, there were even Santino fans (well, okay, *a* Santino fan), and several people who basically lost interest once Nick was eliminated, but I think I was the only one among my PR-crazy circle of friends and acquaintances who was unqualifiedly (what? I could be a word) happy about Chloe's win. Throughout the season I thought her clothes were the most consistently well-made, well-thought-out, wearable, and pretty outfits. I happen to *like* pretty. And, as you say, the results have justified the judges' decision. Hooray for Chloe! Love ya!

Anonymous said...

Chloe and Nick were my favorite designers from season 2 (tho 2nd half of the season, nick seemed to drop the ball). I thought all of chloe's clothes were simple and elegant and of course well executed. Wasn't an enormous fan of her collection, but it's one of those things where you may not like it but you can appreciate it.

The other two had nice pieces, but didn't say all that much (particularly daniel's).

I'm glad to hear her QVC was a success. She seems like a genuine and kind person. I wish her the best of success.

I wish they had unedited versions of the judge deliberation on the dvd. That would make for some extremely interesting and informative footage for project runway junkies like myself.

I was pulling for Chloe from about midway through the season. Loved her maturity and her sense of herself, but I am not your typical reality TV fan who gets off only on the drama. I wasn't crazy about her collection, but I really don't know nuthin' about fashion so I never seem to know what's good and what's not. But I was happy that Chloe won, and I'm even more pleased that she's continuing to work and carve out her niche. She seems to belie Jay Mc's contention that it's 'impossible' to design ready-to-wear and mass market pieces while maintaining a vision -- did he just miss the Target train completely? If Jay had even an iota of Chloe's business sense, I think we would have seen more from him by now. Just sayin'...

I think Chloe's whole life/family story is very inspiring. For her to come from where she did, to become the 'Next Great American Designer' is a true Horatio Alger story & everyone loves a story like that.

Congratulations, Chloe!

Talk about a small businesswoman!

Personally, I liked Santino's collection and the Other Eric liked Daniel's. But all three collections had good and bad points so the win could have gone to any one of them and I wouldn't have been surprised.
