Let's start the week off by handing out advice no one asked for, shall we?
Monday, April 28, 2008 by Author
So darlings, we were recently perusing Bravo press releases (as we are prone to do), when we stumbled upon this:
"TIM GUNN'S GUIDE TO STYLE (Season 2)
The second season of Bravo's "Tim Gunn's Guide to Style," hosted by Tim Gunn, will premiere later this year. Each episode will chronicle one person's fashion dilemmas and introduce the answer to all their troubles – Gunn himself, with his inimitable style, propensity for coaching and encyclopedic expertise in fashion. With his tutelage, deserving folks in need of some change will get the makeover of a lifetime from the man Entertainment Weekly called "a major arbiter of style." After joining the Bravo line-up in the fourth quarter of 2007, "Tim Gunn's Guide to Style" marked triple digit increases for its Thursday 10 p.m. time period, up 113 percent among adults 18-49 and up 92 percent in total viewers versus fourth quarter of 2006. "Tim Gunn's Guide to Style" is produced by Stone & Company Entertainment, with Scott Stone and Sarah-Jane Cohen serving as executive producers."
Notice anything missing from that? Here, we'll give you a hint:
Can it be, poodles? Is Miss Webb NOT returning to Tim's show?
Darlings, you know us. We just hate to be the judgmental sort, but if this is true, it can only be a good thing for the show. No one was rooting for Tim's show to succeed more than us and for a time, we even thought the casting of Veronica Webb as his sidekick-in-style could only be looked at as a good thing. From the minute the show was announced, we felt that it would need someone on the side to loosen Tim up, play to his strengths and cover any weaknesses he had to get things to run smoothly. A savvy female with a fashion background and a personality would make the perfect foil to counter Tim's fussier, more professorial style.
Unfortunately, Veronica didn't turn out to be the foil we'd hoped for. For one, despite the relative cuteness of the dress in the above pics, her wardrobe on the show was jaw-droppingly AWFUL. First rule of the makeover show, the host(s) need to always look impeccable (See: London, Stacey). Half the outfits Veronica wore made her look like she lost a bet.
Second, we don't know what happened to her, since she'd previously always seemed comfortable and easy to watch on camera, but on Tim's show she came off a little hard and cold and her reactions with Tim seemed a bit forced. No chemistry.
Third, we asked for an interview and she never responded, but that has NOTHING to do with our work here today, kittens.
Bravo, you know you want our advice, so let's not play coy here, shall we? You already have the perfect co-host on hand for Tim.
Here, we'll give you another hint:
We hear she's open to job offers at the moment.
Come on, how perfect would that be? She's got the fashion chops and the on-camera experience, she's popular, she's looking at career options at the moment, and it's a way for the network to hold on to some of that Project Runway fabulosity that they spent so much time and money cultivating. PLUS, she and Tim have history and we think they'd work well together.
Just don't make her go through anyone's underwear drawer. Nina's far too fabulous to be handling someone's discount granny panties.
UPDATE: [Via MiamiHerald.com] "I'm not coming back for Season 2. Tim will be back, though. I'm doing a show for BBC World called Living Style." Thanks Lilithcat/Bia.

YESSSSS!!!
Save our television watching lives please!!!!
that would be so perfect! we need more nina.
No, nononononononono! Nina doesn't understand the "average woman". Tim needs someone who does and who will make average above-average. Nina's too removed to make it work.
Plus, we really don't need anymore crossover from PR, do we? No. Definitely not. What Bravo needs to do is find someone who is in touch with reality and the everywoman most of us are, someone who faces many of the same challenges and who hasn't been stuck in a lofty editorial position for ages.
Now THAT is genius! A wealth of genius. As long as Ms. Garcia still does Runway, I'd be thrilled for her to do Tim's show, too. Seriously, more Nina! More Nina!
And about the "average woman"...isn't the point of this show to take women from frumpy to fabulous? I think what is needed is a MAGNIFICENT woman, one who can yank these bitches out of their love affair with the mediocre. So, again--Nina Garcia is perfect.
"What Bravo needs to do is find someone who is in touch with reality and the every woman most of us are, someone who faces many of the same challenges and who hasn't been stuck in a lofty editorial position for ages."
I disagree. Have you read her book? It's filled with great advices on how to dress better. She clearly understnds fashion. She'd be perfect.
Oh, I concur on every point. And may I say that as much as I despise booties, La Nina is very IN in those pictures!
I'm probably in the extreme minority, but I don't think Veronica Webb was the reason that Tim's show was bad. It would have been bad without her, and I think she was brought on pretty late in the game to take the heat. And she did.
Nina *would* be a good co-host, for a good show. And if they changed the makeover advice to be a little more similar to *her* book (which is much more clever and light hearted than Tim's)the show might have a chance.
That would kick ass! But would La Nina want her name in the title of the show as well?
so we need someone in touch with the every woman? what's Delta Burke up to these days?
Queens, you read it right. To me Ms. Webb was at best awkward. There's a kink in her sense of style which is not reality based (i.e. her views on leggings).
Nina would be the perfect match and if she does join the show. It would be a good replacement for Project Runway. Although I'm not too sure that Nina would be willing to operate as a second headline or under the name "TIM GUNN's guide to style.
Another show that I liked was TLC's "I've Got Nothing To Wear". Any thoughts?
I think Janice Dickinson would be the *perfect* choice for Tim's sidekick. Mr. Gunn needs someone to play against so he can be nice daddy and, jiminy cricket, who would be better as bad mommy than Janice Dickinson?
I'd put Laura Bennett in there. Despite the fact that she and her husband have some money, the woman has got six kids and works. She would be the perfect foil for Tim. She understands glamor, but I think she is attuned to different people's personal styles, and would be amazing to work with.
Fanny Wonder mentioned "Bad Mommy"
While I love the idea of Nina -
wouldn't our own BM MS LB be delicious?
I would LOVE to see Nina Garcia as Tim's co-host. Talk about my match from heaven.
Yes! Laura Bennett!
"fanny wonder said...

Are you kidding? That woman is a ho and has no class.
YES!!! NINA. NINA. NINA.
Yo quiero LA NINA. : )
Tim and Nina - PERFECT! What a totally fab idea, guys! If they have to do Tim Gunn's Guide to Life, which I really don't think they do, somebody with Nina's style would be so great.
Thanks for keeping us poor slobs in your loop.
Not Nina! If I were the woman they were making over, I'd be terrified of Nina. I'd be afraid she'd be as mean to me as she was on PR. No way.
I think Laura Bennett is a good suggestion though.
La Nina and Sir Tim??!!! yes yes yes and more yes!!!
I loved Tim's show and always there was something off about Webb as the side kick.....but with Nina, it would be perfect!
I'm glad there is going to be a second season, the first one ended way too soon!
My only concern would be that Nina might not have the understanding of the every day woman - she might be too high fashion. But I say give her a go - she's fab and I love her =)
But not of she wears the skirt in the bottom photo. It looks like something the band in the park wore in Mary Poppins. Blech.
But, I do love Nina. She'd be great!
I thought the show was bad and should never be seen again, but if they're revamping it and I have to see it again, then I want my Nina!
Darlings, you know us. We just hate to be the judgmental sort...
LOL. You bitches crack me up. Nina Garcia OR Laura Bennett and I would actually make time to watch the show. As it is, it's a big no-no.
Just the fact that the Tim/Veronica duo is apparently split would make me give the show another shot. I'd love to see la Niña take over for Veronica.
The show would be a HUGE hit. Tim and Nina are perfect together.
OMG< Nina would be Beyond Perfect. From your lips to the ears of The Powers That Be.
"looks like she lost a bet" (snorrrrk!) That's funny.
And yeah, OK, I could see Nina working better as a co-host, but I still wonder if someone with more genuine warmth wouldn't be a better balance to Tim. He and Heidi make a nice combo (but only in the rare PR contexts that they interact) because her energy is so extroverted and his is introverted. Nina is more on the introverted side.
But why, honestly, does he HAVE to have a sidekick? He does just fine, doing his solo mentoring on PR, bouncing off the designers he interacts with. Why do we feel we must preserve the male/female co-hosts system in these makeover shows? Tim doesn't need the estrogen counterbalance!
Laura would always be my first choice, but Nina would be fabulous too. If they rework it well, it could be a nice replacement in their lineup for PR. What they really need is TLo, of course, either on camera or off. You are much more in touch with the viewing audience than anyone in the studio seems to be! My favorite TLo show would be a weekly half hour to hour long rundown of clips/comments on all the reality shows of the week. You could have interviews with contestants, judges, and producers too. Think Talk Soup with a TLo twist! Now wouldn't THAT be special?!!
I loved that scene when the woman said that she loved a certain pair of jeans because they made her butt look bigger, and Tim said, "You *want* your butt to look biggger?!" Veronica said to him, "It's cultural, Tim."
It would have been great if Veronica and Tim had more exchanges like that, because she does seem more in touch with a younger, hipper crowd. But alas, she frequently seemed stiff and uncomfortable on camera.

Sewing Siren, I agree to some extent. Remember, Tim's producers are the same that put on the original season of Top Design, and commenters here are familiar with what a wreck that show was.
As for NinaGarciaformerlyofellemagazine joining Tim: yes, it's a nice idea in a perfect world. However, in the real world of marketing and self-promotion, why would someone with their own book want to be the side-kick on a show based on someone else's?
Don't get me wrong, Nina is my favorite judge on PR because she pretty much tells it like it is (with some favorites being spared at times). But it is a nice dream!
How about revolving gues hosts based on the challenge;
If you need to take someone from mom to glam, then "Bad Mommy"
Prehaps Nina for another challenge;
Maybe dare I say, SJP... or Fern Mallis?
and so on. Also maybe the incredible Austin Scarlett for something Bridal themed...
I see a lot of potential in that, rather than forcing Tim to work with one person.
Or how about Tim and Iman.
Another Suburban Mom said..
"Or how about Tim and Iman."
Oh kittens - so much fabulosity there, my TV would explode....
The episode last season with Laura made me downright weepy - I think she really gets what these women are going through.
Oh, I am all over Laura for the job ... no end of fabulous.
Wow. What a crazy idea. I love it!
Ms. Bennett would be perfect, too, though. It would be great to see her and Mr. Gunn together. Talk about superheroes!
GASP! That's perfect! Good thinking guys.
Somehow work Laura in too. The result would be straight from heaven.
I'm probably in the extreme minority, but I don't think Veronica Webb was the reason that Tim's show was bad. It would have been bad without her,
Sewing Siren, you're not alone. The show had plenty of problems. But I don't think the response to the possible disappearance of VW means people think she was the only problem with the show.
The lack of humor and chemistry between Tim & VW was the one of many flaws, it pains me to say it. One of the biggest problems, I feel, was Tim's uniform advice, which pivoted around that stupid list of essential pieces. If week after week you're going to prescribe a white shirt, a classic trench, etc., then every episode is going to be pretty much the same, and the women themselves are going to seem the same, whether they are or not.
Oh, and re Nina---I don't get why a lot of people say she's mean. I think she was no more mean--and often more sympathetic--than the other judges on PR.
Hmmm...Not so sure this would be the right fit for LaNina. Sure, she knows her stuff (though she wears some questionable outfits as well), but me thinks she lacks the compassion required to talk to the emotionally unstable fashion victims they choose for these shows.
And if the PR designers can bore Nina in mere seconds, what will happen when Becky Sue from Omaha, with a Gingham sack fetish questions the expert's destruction of her favorite picture sweater from 1988?? I fear there will be blood on the floor (though, that would give BRAVO the opportunity for some nifty stain removal product placement).
I'm seeing lawsuits for reimbursement for therapy bills.

Janice Dickenson would be perfect casting for the Saturday Night Live Parody, not for the actual show itself. I can just see Janice encouraging the women to lift their skirts and moon the PTA.
--GothamTomato
no Nina, please! IF the show keeps its emotionally-gruelling theme up, then I just don't see Nina being a good choice. There's something about her that strikes me as a little bit...hard. not necessarily cold, but not very kind or sensitive, either. More businesslike than anything else. And I think that, because we know Nina as a judge, any woman being made-over would be intimidated of being judged a la PR.
Laura B would be okay in my book, even though her glamour is also intimidating.
I like the idea of a Fabulous Gay sidekick - someone younger and a little looser than Tim, edgy but sweet underneath.
or maybe....TLo as sidekick duo?!
I think Laura Bennet would be the perfect choice.
And as for Veronica, she may be out, but she's leaving with the most fabulous arms around. If my arms looked like hers, I'd never wear sleeves.
And BTW, I agree with whoever said that she wasn't the problem with the show. I think the show had multiple issues (largely the lack of fabulosity) and was just generally flat. I think what it needs is different producers.
--GothamTomato
As I was reading the post, I kept thinking Laura! Laura! Laura! and was shocked to scroll down to the picture of Nina, but you know what? It's not a bad idea either.
So I would be with the folks who say Laura first, but if not available, Nina. Of course offering it to Nina would be a nice sock in the eye to Elle.
Hope Laurie
YES BITCHES!! YES YES!!!
I thought Laura would be good in that role too -- but Nina would be sooo fabulous also!
I love Tim -- love him!! But I couldnt' stand the show. I couldn't stand the underwear drawer. I couldnt' stand Veronica's outfits. And I hated that Tim had to sit there looking at those outfits as if they were acceptable.
Save this show! Stop going thru underwear drawers!! Get a new, knowledgable side-kick for Tim.
I would do it, but my schedule is full - lol.
TAKE HEED, BRAVO!!
Any woman who isn't terrified at the thought of Nina Garcia judging her back fat or rummaging around in her underwear drawer is lying. I think Nina would be awful. They need someone glamorous but more down to earth. Nina strikes me as lacking empathy. She and Tim would come across as a couple of NYC snobs picking on poor suburban moms who are (gasp!) bigger than a size 8.
More Nina is *always* a good thing. Yes, please, Bravo!
It would be perfect - Nina makes the choices with the woman and Tim makes the judgement calls on it. He is a great editor of other people's ideas and visions. His reactions to other's works is what makes watching him on PR so great.
How about a show with Tim and TLo titled "The Gay Posse"
Otherwise I think Laura B. would be a better choice, but she probably doesn't have the time.
I'd go with Laura K. of BPR or the person who co-wrote Tim's book as a sidekick.
Quit knocking on Veronica, Tim has only himself to blame for not taking some position as to what the show should be like.
Sometimes he just seems to be the corporate boy and never really have an opinion. It just can't be that he didn't ask himself if it wasn't too dumb to show up to people's houses and look through their underwear drawer.
And to that, he should have thought more seriously as to who partners with him. I don't think Veronica is bad at all, it just wasn't good chemistry, but it wasn't horrid either. The show needs alot of work and just goes to show that even with Tim it isn't a sure thing.
And I HATED the special symbolic gift crap and the family hug in the end. Why does Tim need to push kitsch if he doesn't want to wear it?
Nah. I never liked Nina - she's too snotty. I vote for Laura Bennett.
1st vote for Laura, I just like her personality better than Nina's. But Nina would be a fine second choice.

My friend was on the show and Veronica wouldn't even speak to her unless there was a camera around. Tim took some real interest in her needs; he was extremely friendly and even posed for pictures.
No, no, Nina... or this show! It's A TERRIBLE concept for Tim Gunn -- I want to see his specific expertise encouraging designers and CREATORS, not "regular folk" (Carson Kressley's got that wrapped up).
Please... something else for Tim!
Veronica Webb never had a chance. They put her in the most hideous outfits, gave her goofy hairstyles and made her up to look like a burn victim. (Obviously they didn't hire enough gays.) It's almost as if they WANTED her to look bad.
She was a little still on-camera but I think she could have improved. Oh, well.

She insisted on wearing her own hideous clothes. She didn't want a stylist. Good riddance!!
YES! Nina would be perfect! Viva La Nina!
I love Tim, but he's very stiff in front of the camera. He needs someone funny and talkative.
Brilliant.
Nina could be a lot of fun.

Did she have to spend $100 on Liz Claiborne duds first?
C'mon gays. you can do better! Does the co-host have to have style? If not, how about Tim Gunn and Kathy Griffin? Kathy could definitely handle the underwear drawer segment...
Tim Gunn and Rosie O'Donnell.
One more, then I'll stop:
Tim Gunn and Dita Von Teese!
I know it hasn't been discussed yet, but I would just like to congratulate Bad Mommy.
If I could pick anyone: Tim Gunn and Isabella Blow. Can you imagine? I miss her...

I can only imagine what she'd say to those housefraus.
*snort,snicker*
Discount granny panties!
Kzspot
Nina would not be a good fit. She's not really a "hands-on" person. I don't think she'd be good when a woman has a breakdown. She'd probably shuffle her feet and stare at the floor.
Bad Mommy however, is from the real world. She never looks less than fabulous AND she picks up turtle poop! If that doesn't get Laura the gig then I don't know what would.
I think the only problem adding Nina would be that they would have to change the name of the show, if ya know what I mean....
I think La Nina would be a disaster. Did everyone see that incredibly awkward video she made about fashion for plus-size women? It was obviously not her cup of tea.
But really, I don't like this show. It just didn't work. And I resent that it is aimed at "deserving folks in need of some change". Who, exactly, decides what "deserving" means? And who the hell isn't deserving?
Laura Bennett would be just too FAB!! She understands "Everywoman".
Sorry, I am not and never have been a La Nina fan.
-----StkrShock
OMG I cracked up when I saw Tim with Nina. As much as I would LOVE these two together on this show, I can't help, truth be told it's supposed to be Tim's show. And as soon as Nina gets on the set, they'll have to change the title to: IT'S NINA'S SHOW NOW, BITCH!
there's no way you can hold that fabulous Latina DOWN!

Oh please. Everyone who goes on the show does it voluntarily, knowing that critique (and potential embarrassment) is involved.
And TV spends waaay too much time pandering to suburban moms already anyway. It would be a lot better if it didn't.

GENIUS! You boys have your thinking caps on, that is for sure.
Poor Veronica Webb. Her hair stylist on the show should have been fired - it always looked horribly unflattering - every time my husband would watch the show with me, he would joke, "Who's that black man next to Tim Gunn?"
~muellersdayoff
Yeah...you guys are fantastic. Lots fantastic.
NINA NINA NINA,YEAH!
I like and agree with the upthread ideas of revolving guest sidekicks. Especially if some of them were our favorite PR past contestants. How I would love to have Tim Gunn and Chris March come marching up my walkway!

OMG, imagine some poor timid housewife, seeing Chris barreling up the driveway shouting "I'VE COME TO CHECK OUT YER UNDERWEAR DRAWER! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAA----"
They could never allow S4's Kevin to do it. He would just keep calling out from the bedroom "Still checking, hang on another minute!"
I'll leave you with this image: WWE Diva co-hosts. *shudder*
Just clicked through to the "cast blogs" where Ms. Webb had catalogued her thoughts on the women they helped, and got a "Page Not Found." So they're definitely in an erasing mood over there.
I liked the show for its compassion, even liked Veronica, but there was an awkwardness on camera that everyone seems to have picked up on. As Tim would say, "We have to bid you farewell now, but thank you for your help."
Nina is too intimidating, Laura would be fabulous, just don't make her do the vest thing again, please.
LOVE IT!!!
La Nina Garcia all the way!!!
From Drab to Fab in one fell swoop.
Although I liked Veronica-- I thought she was great with the average woman.
Loved Veronica.
Not her wardrobe.
I thought she added an interesting contrast and compassion to the show.
Considering her gorgeous life, career, husband and daughters, Ms. Veronica will survive quite swimmingly w/out "Tim Gunn's Guide To Style".
Emma P.
~muellersdayoff, I'm sure you & your husband have more class than to mean anything derogatory by your remark, but you both should be so lucky to ever have 1 of the top supermodels of the world give you the time of day. That "black man" could buy & sell you both in a NY minute.
One thing is for sure, the show started off broken. Tim showed himself as no longer a solid blue-chip investment. He didn't look comfortable except when he was lecturing with those diagrams about how clothes fit and the meaning particular to their "contestant" that episode. The problem is lack of imagination - why didn't they just invest in Tim Gunn to give a history of fashion in relation to one or another particular case-study they can find in the everyday metropolis of NYC? Why this "save your life" kind of ethos, making it similar to "overhaulin" for fashion... I just think he's not situated correctly and the producers don't have a clue to invent a better genre, so they stole some old ideas, and Tim is ever the staunch one, he follows through without complaint. But not particularly with alot of soul. Kindness and gracious manners is not the same as having some heart in it.
Just look at his performance on the last PR and the first season. He should regroup before it's too late and he gets exploited.
Webb is definitely not coming back for Season 2. From the horse's mouth. (It's toward the end of the article.)
Well, it's official, the bitch is gone:
"How has your experience been on Guide to Style? Any tips?
"The show was such a beautiful way to help ordinary people. Sometimes it's as simple as looking the part. Tips? 1. True beauty is from the inside out, so keep it clean. Break a sweat every day. 2. Do a juice fast once a year and watch your face and body blossom. 3. Go for broke when it comes to finding a good pair of jeans. That doesn't mean spending a ton of money. Invest your time in finding a great fit."
What are your plans?
"I'm not coming back for Season 2. Tim will be back, though. I'm doing a show for BBC World called Living Style. Everyone wants to know how to live fabulous lives; we go behind the scenes into this world. We interviewed Lenny Kravitz in his studio and Kylie Minogue, who actually talked to us from her bed. It's something different.""
Ordinary people????
Oops, sorry, Lilithcat, for some reason I didn't see your post.
Bia -
No need to apologize. I am of the school of thought that it's better to hear something more than once than not at all!
;-))
Although I love Veronica Webb and can't wait for the return of some type of Black supermodel some of the outfits she wore on the show were heidous! Seriously some of those outfits needed to be guided to the trash! Not to mention her hair would look a bit "off" sometimes too!
YAY! She's gone!!! Now the question is, who's going to replace her?
how about Laura????
Gotham Tomato: "Oh please. Everyone who goes on the show does it voluntarily, knowing that critique (and potential embarrassment) is involved."
It's a makeover show, not the Colisseum. Presumably the participants are looking for help, not to be mocked for entertainment value. Nina's two biggest horrors (said in tones of exquisite disgust) are OLD and FAT. People going on a makeover show aren't going to be 6 ft. tall 19 year old models.
"And TV spends waaay too much time pandering to suburban moms already anyway. It would be a lot better if it didn't."
Puhleeze. Better for whom? Better in what way? Television content is generated by one and one thing only, money.
She did suck but I heard stories that the producers told Veronica to be careful not to overshadow the star of the show.
Veronica had zero personality. She barely contributed to the show in any way, shape or form. Veronica, I'm sorry, but you're out.
I'll give it another shot, especially now that VB is not going to be back. I hated the first season and that horrible underwear segment.
I went to a q+A with Tim last weekend and he said they'll be no more underwear drawer going through.
"Anonymous said...

THANK GOD!!
"abby said: Better for whom? Better in what way? Television content is generated by one and one thing only, money."
Yes, a race to the bottom (pandering to the lowest common denominator). That doesn't generate the best quality programming.
--GothamTomato
Veronica was only one problem with the show, which Tim himself is one. He's so reserved and very judgmental about the makeover. Stacy and Clinton are too, but they can laugh with the mo, and really try to help change what they're wearing, not who they are. Tim is so stiff. It's like he cannot relate at all to the mo.
Laura would bridge that gap in connection to the mo and the audience. Nina not so much. I can't see her being understanding of the average woman's problems.
