Ripping the Collections: Jeffrey, Part Eins

Monday, October 30, 2006 by

Out of the final four, it was Jeffrey whose collection made the strongest statement. The show itself was somewhat anti-show. The music, while beautiful and haunting, came off at times as downbeat and morose and the models couldn't walk to it at all. The styling was a little bleh and the shoes were downright ugly.

What it lacked in showmanship, however, it more than made up for in risk-taking and cohesion.

Let's start the show.

God, those shoes. They wound us. Probably not half as much as they wounded her, though.

Anyway, we'll start off by saying this fabric was plain ugly. In fact, Jeffrey almost always makes fabric choices we hate. We're not a big fan of all the extraneous strappy/hangy stuff, but the proportions work and the dress as a whole makes an impact, if an understated one.

Really, really hate the proportions here. That looks more like a foundation garment than a bathing suit. It is a bathing suit, right?

The jacket and bag are nice, though.

Lorenzo loved it, Tom hated it. Lorenzo thinks it looks young, pretty and delicate. Tom thinks she looks like Strawberry Shortcake.

We have to say, this really grew on us. Yeah, it's a little gimmicky and we question who would wear it, but there's something about the color and proportion, the careful sloppiness and planned asymmetry of the straps. It just works. Great pants too.

This one did not grow on us. We liked it on the rack when he showed it to Tim, but it got seriously ugly on a model. For once, we love the fabric, but we hate long-in-the-front hems. It always makes her look like she's wearing an apron. The dress looks deceptively simple but if you blow up the pic, he constructed the hell out of that thing. Too much so, in our opinion.

Love the jacket. The little capped sleeves and the open-zippered back look new and different. The skirt is great too, but this whole "tied together" thing has to go. He had the beginnings of a perfectly good design but that "uni-suspender" is distracting as hell. And pointless, to boot.

The Strawberry Shortcake outfit reminds me of something Bubble would wear on AbFab.

Haha..."uni-suspender." Perhaps wearing Jeffery's clothes is like being strapped into a high-chair?

My first thought was also Strawberry Shortcake. But with the gauzy overlay, I thought it looked more like a negligee Strawberry Shortcake would wear to do softcore porn.

The thing about Jeffrey's collection is that when we first saw all the collections (at least for me and my girlfriends) we all walked away thinking Uli's and Jeffrey's will be the top two, but when you start picking apart the actual collections and looks... well, Jeffrey's ain't so hot IMHO.
Uli's even had some hiccups.

When picking apart these collections, its amazing how one's perspective changes. When I saw Laura's collection, I immediately said "she won't win with it" and I was right... but I feel after picking apart these collections and really looking at the work done, it's funny how (to me) Laura did the strongest work on a piece-by-piece basis. But, we all knew she wouldn't win because it wasn't something Nina G would put all over Elle...

I guess this exercise shows us how important the statement of the collection is compared to the actual looks that compose it. Jeffrey's collection, when viewed as a moving fashion show just seemed stronger than the pieces that make it up... a shining example of the whole being greater than the sum of all it's parts...

I can't wrap my mind around the "Jeffrey Esthetic".

The crop top with the dangling straps is interesting, but do you notice the one fitted sleeve and the other baggy dolman sleeve on it? I can see where he might have found that interesting on paper, but on the model the whole thing pulled around unflatteringly toward the tighter side while she walked. WTF?

The dresses shown here are just plain fugly, but wearable. To mop floors in.

Serious ugly indeed.

I do like the hairstyle of the Strawberry Shortcake model.

There -- I said one nice about Jeffrey's collection. Is everyone happy? ;-)

On the bright side, the second-to-last dress on this post would be great if the woman wearing it was dressing up as the Batman villain Two-Face for Halloween.

While I found his collection neither cohesive nor risky, I did seem to like as many things as you did (though not the same things). I loved the Strawberry Shortcake outfit. And I loved the two-tone dress. The longer-in-front thing didn't bother me like it did on his challenge dress because it looked intentional here.

Thank you for clearing up why the models were all walking like they'd just gotten out of surgery. I didn't catch the music problem; but that must have been it.

jinxy said...

I think the only purpose of that shirt with the one larger sleeve is to facilitate people with gland problems, where one arm is about 3 sizes larger than the other...

It is not pretty, it looked awkward to wear and the only thing really wrong with it to me was that one thing... Gimmicky at best...

Anonymous said...

The shoes! The SHOES! Gagh. I forgot because so many photos barely show them, but goodness did they clunk. Thanks for noticing and bringing them up again.

And I don't get the extra fabric in front, either. I always consider it like a handherchief--she can lift up the extra to wipe her mouth without exposing her ladybits.

Anonymous said...

Meh.

I'd have rather seen full-blown rawker than this mediocre crap.

Gigi said...

So many parts of this collection just plain confused me. I hate dresses that are longer in the front, extraneous hanging bits and weird asymmetry. Yes, there are some redeeming pieces but most of it was just plain over-designed and leaves you wondering why?

Bill said...

Thanks for pointing out the shoes, Boys. They look broken.

I thought the first two dresses look like a country kitchen tablecloth that was ripped up and repurposed as outfits for Nicole & Paris on The Simple Life.

Starwberry Shortcake - spot on.

What I call the "zigzag dress" just hurt my eyes and made the model look wide.

Re: all the hanging straps. All I can think of is women running out a door or jumping out of a car and getting yanked back and thrown to the ground because their starps have gotten caught somewhere.

Anonymous said...

What I really can't understand is what the first model was thinking with the tanorexia--was she hoping to get a spot on Michael Kors' show? The bad self-tanner threw me for a loop (wonder if it did so for Jeffrey?).

Oh, and the music: goodness, I thought it was awful. It may have been better if Jeffrey hadn't gone first, but it was really, really depressing and took away from the clothes--picture Uli's music with Jeffrey's clothes and all of a sudden his collection looks fresher.

Anonymous said...

jinxy: "when we first saw all the collections...we all walked away thinking Uli's and Jeffrey's will be the top two, but when you start picking apart the actual collections and looks... well, Jeffrey's ain't so hot IMHO."
Agree. Loved Uli's stuff and Laura is looking stronger to me in retrospect. Everyone keeps saying that Jeffrey's overall collection was best, but each individual piece gets pretty spotty reviews. Will look forward to part zwei to see if there is a more positive evaluation of the other pieces.

Re: all the hanging straps. All I can think of is women running out a door or jumping out of a car and getting yanked back and thrown to the ground because their starps have gotten caught somewhere.

Isadora Duncan was killed in a freak 1927 accident when her scarf became tangled in the rear axle of her automobile. There are *so* many extraneous ugly dangly things on Jeffrey's clothes that could catch and strangle a woman. Given his world view, I wonder if that was his intention.

James Derek Dwyer said...

This actually is Strawberry Shortcake's line- Jeffrey just outsourced to Apple Dumplin', Cherry Cuddler and Peach Blush. Although I heard that he had to refit the outfits to the human models in his LA Sweatshop...

Anonymous said...

Oh god, I hated those shoes too. I couldn't stop staring at them.

Anonymous said...

I seriously loved this collection, the first dress in particular. I know it's not for everyone, but the color, whimsy, and freshness of these dresses really fits my aesthetic perfectly. I'm so glad he went in this direction instead of the dark, heavy, Cosa Nostra look.

My biggest complaint: the clothes were so light and whimsical, that I thought the dark, brooding music was a bad fit.

Anonymous said...

I wished Jeffrey had gone over budget again and had to ditch those clunker shoes.

However, he won with those serious ugly shoes, zipper trims, dark music, dangly straps, weird hemlines, red apple dots, busy blues and green candy stripes. In addition, he separated from the pack by dressing his models for ordinary everyday activities. The outfits were not for partying, MTV videos or charity fundraisers.

Santino may have paved the way for his win. Jeffrey could step out of the box with constructed, finished pieces. His final collection was very different from his season long challenges. The judges were pleasantly surprised.

He deserved the win for being the first to use zippers and leather extensively. Even though Uli and Laura had better overall collection, I believed the green striped handbag and the Marilinda dress tipped the scale for his win.

stmkent said...

Those shoes...they look like special orthopedic shoes for people with deformed heels.

jinxy said...

I agree that asymmetry has a place and purpose... but most of his outfits thus far have been asymmetric... almost like jeffrey had an ear infection in one ear that threw his balance off while he was draping...

There is a way to overdo an effect, and many of his looks had that "overdone" feel to it.

If I had to choose a favorite out of this group, well let me see...

-Apple print crooked apron dress,
-Apple print Granny Panty suit,
-Strawberry Shortcake's hand-me-down apple dress
-Quasimodo crop top,
-The crazy stripe apron dress,
or the
-Uni-suspender outfit

The ones that aren't gimmicky (the "apple" series) just aren't strong pieces. They are different, but maybe no one else does them for a reason??

Vic said...

Can't stand the peanut's infantile behavior. Can't stand those shoes. But he designed the most cohesive, cutting edge collection. It's hard to argue against his win.

Damn!

As a woman who wants to look as fabulous as she feels, I love Laura's collection more.

Embeedubya said...

The shoes! Cloddish, weighty, or blah. But the clothes were fascinating. Was the red strappy top supposed to go with the banned leather shorts?

Anonymous said...

Hated it!

Gail said...

I think my main problem with Jeffrey's clothes is the odd proportion. His clothes make these size 0 dressforms look lopsided, so imagine what they would look like on a size 10.

I don't care how skinny a woman is, if you put her in a dress that is longer in the front than the back it makes her butt look big.

The Strawberry Shortcake dress was so strangly put together that it made it look like the model's behind was under her armpits.

And I can't stand that shredded, loopy, dangling look either. It looks like he tied rags togther and draped them on his models.

If this is what's passing for "young and fresh" these days, I hope it passes quickly.

Anonymous said...

I like the assymetrical dresses. But I hate the clunky shoes. I prefer a strappy sandal.

The bathing suit was cute. The jacket part is nice. But can you actually swim in it?

I hated Jeffrey's collection in stills, I hated Jeffrey's collection in motion, I hated Jeffrey's collection when he won. For all the reasons mentioned and also for the fit. The hems were bad but the fit up top was terrible too. That Strawberry Shortcake bodice looks like it hits mid-boob while others were kind of blousy.

And I still think his look is innovative only if you never saw Pat Benatar in her "Love Is a Battlefield" video. I kept waiting for Pat and the girls to come out with fingers snapping singing "We are young . . ."

Jeffrey's song is actually a song by his former band "Lifter." I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE this song. Sure, it didn't fit with the clothes and it's impossible to model-walk to (you could, however, saunter eerily to it through a pub dressed in black, looking all mysterious), but it's really haunting which (pardon my Vincent moment) turns me on.

Those models could not walk. Period. Can't blame the music. They weren't fierce walkers walking to bad music, they were dreadful walkers. It was almost as distracting as the shoes (mother of god, why those shoes, why?) The whole collection was so Forever 21.

Anonymous said...

The 1 thing I did like about Jeffrey's show was the music. It was beautiful in a Smiths/Morrissey-I'm 19 and I soooo sad- sort of way. The collection-- No. The 1st pair of shoes screamed 3 words-- I. Hate. Women. The dresses said it by loving the Japanime aesthetic that women are only attractive if they dress like children ("Cutie Honey", "Bubblegum Crisis" et al). This rawker look-- huh? I worked on music videos in LA from 1989-1993 and yes, the bands I worked for did wear the outre jackets and skinny jeans ala Guns & Roses. But the current rock stars (Pete Doherty, Jack Black or the band Franz Ferdinand for instance)look nothing like what Jeffrey's projecting. Courtney Love may be crazy but she does dress in real couture. It's almost as if PR's judges and fans have taken Jeffrey's word his look is what everyone in LA that's cool looks like as gospel. Given what I see every day in LA in the music/tv/film biz, they really dress more like Laura (her fashion icon challenge).

Anonymous said...

While I understand that the object of a couture show is the art, I don't believe that any party of Jeffrey's collection is either wearable or sellable. To ME, that is the ultimate "judge" of a collection...whether there is actually a market for it. The answer for this collection is a resounding NO. On the other hand, both Uli and Laura should have absolutely no problem getting their collections into stores.

Anonymous said...

For congratulating Jeffrey on being innovative and having a collection that is "cohesive," you guys sure did rip into him.

I am so abivalent about Jeffrey's collection! On one hand, I can see how his collection seemed cohesive and yet still interesting. On the other, I feel like MOST of the pieces were not flattering to the wearer or attractive to the viewer.

I feel like Jeffrey put on a good runway show through which some not-so-great pieces moved through inoffensively because they went with the flow so well.

Anonymous said...

Since the shoes are so ugly maybe we all need a break before the next part on Jeffrey is published. I propose the break take the form of your story of Laura's after party and morning after coffee.

Waiting for it has become torturous! (Which is not to say I don't enjoy your wit re: the collections).

Despite the darkly haunting music, this collection was an eye-popper. We think of couture as uber-elegant gowns and elegant suit, but Jeffrey did the unthinkable and made sportswear and everyday wear into something unique and one of a kind. You may not agree with his fabric choices or silhouettes, but he had constructed the hell out of each garment and they were truly unique pieces. When viewed that way, they were nothing short of amazing.

Nor, in my view, were the shoes a mistake. They were Jeffrey's way of emphasizing that these were casual clothes, not night at the opera clothes.

I believe we immediately discount these clothes unfairly because they don't fit with our mental images of what we dream of wearing if we were all that delightfully slim. Jeffrey has a distinct point of view. It's not the boring white bread that we've all come to know and wear (and perhaps even love). Yet it is exciting because it is dramatically different, fresh, and new. Like Jay McCarroll, he has something to say and very much in his own, unique voice.

Anonymous said...

Things I like in Jeffrey's collection: the leather pants & jackets, the thing he did with the zippers on the final dress.

Things I hated in Jeffrey's collection: everything else.

It wasn't only the "anti-show" it was the "anti-aesthetic." Break rules willy-nilly just to be different: asymmetry, weird hems, bizarre fabric choices, HORRIBLE styling, etc. This is the very definition of gimmick.

It's only appropriate for a disaffected 14-year-old, which I guess makes sense cuz that seems to be Jeffrey's basic mindset. He does seem to have mad skilz, tho, so maybe his clothing will improve as he moves along in recovery.

Anonymous said...

1. Re: The last dress - looks to me like Raymundo's Appalachian Barbie of the future.

2. I think that some of these outfits would have looked better if the models' hair had been more like Marilinda's during the couture challenge. I realize that is probably at odds with the music (and ergo the statement that Jeffrey was trying to make?), but I think a little less severity would have played to the audience better. Yeah, come to think of it, change the music, too, Dude--more uptempo might have been better for selling this collection to the public at large.

3. While J's strength may be his ability to translate a rock/rebellious sensibility into a fashion statement, it seems to me that he was trying to break out of that and create garments that Macy's would be more inclined to accept. Really, too bad--I think he'd have created an awesome collection playing to his strong suit. But that would have had limited appeal, and I think he knew he couldn't win (and more to the point, position himself as a viable "mainstream" designer, which I think is his goal).

Jefferey's collection was genius. It was an IDEA, and if it is meant to be worn, it's for creative, interesting people. Virtually all of the artists I know loved his collection because it's for people who aren't afraid of getting outside the box and away from those stupid flare jeans and hoodies that most people live in. If you don't "get it", it's because you either a) are too blinded by his admittedly repulsive personality or b) simply don't like clothing that challenges convention.

The only thing that was poorly made and fitted was his "Uli dress". Everything else, regardless of how baggy it in some places, looks completely intentional. The right girl can pull those clothes off, and that's who they're meant for. They're for the coolest girl in the club, the most unique person passing by on the street. Sorry, Average America, you'll just have to stick with Macy's.

I thought the red fabric was a surprising choice for Jeffrey. I liked it. I thought the first dress and baby doll dress were great. The bathing suit was just yucky. It made me think of a designer Depends.

As for the shoes...a serious judgement error. They looked like they belonged with a pair of red and white striped stockings??? They really took away from the clothes.

Seems I'm the only one who hated the fabric of the halter dress. I liked the dress but the fabric was way too dark and depressing for such a flirty number. There was a certain clown factor going on with the fabric choice.

Last outfit I couldn't agree with you more. I really like the whole thing except for the jacket tie. You're so right - it's unnecessary.

I must say, I was surprised with your reactions - I thought you were going to be in love with this collection.

Uh, flare jeans and hoodies are out. Have you taken a look at what celebrities are wearing (which usually is what those who shop at Macy's end up wanting)? Skinny jeans and silhouettes much like what Jeffrey showed. It's nothing THAT original and cutting edge. So those dreaded non creative mediocre masses will soon be spotted in clothing with a similar aesthetic to J's collection -- didn't want you to think that was all Jeffrey's doing. He is very much a product of now.

You say that like it's a bad thing to not like clothing that 'challenges convention'. Maybe some of us don't 'get' the idea of wearing ugly clothes. And that doesn't make us unworthy people, or less intelligent. It is possible to be creative and interesting without wearing ill-fitting, unflattering, weird garments.

I was thinking, hmm, maybe I hate his collection because the fit seems off, or the proportions are unflattering, or the cuts are just plain unnatractive, or the colors and prints seem bizarre and gaudy. I just love the fabric choices and the way he mixed them, proportions (or more asimetry), it just looked outstanding and extremely creative. I guess it's a matter of taste and design concept, because although Uli's collection was prettier, it was just that, pretty (I loved it too). Hated Laura's and Michael, the fist one because she lacked completey of innovative design, the second one, way too ho-tacky-hip-hop-bling-bling-street-safari

I'm just glad the most briliant and outstanding designer won. (beside the fact he beat Laura's @ss off and on the runway, many times!!)

Thank you Tom and Lorenzo! Or should I speak Malanese and say Thomas and Lorenzo? :-)

When I saw the pics of the collections the first thing that came to my mind was what is the deal with all this extraneous wickety wack? I thought these clothes were waiting for an ambulance chasing lawyer as anyone that tried to wear them was courting diability and/or death. And this is not just because I believe that form should follow function. I didn't see that the idea was executed into a wearable application.

So for your amusement I offer this tidbit as part of a "Life Post PR" bit I am writing on all the designers.

Jeffrey buys a Jenny Craig franchise in order to make the world safe for “slimassstalkcracy.” His coping skills, or lack thereof, are a recipe (pardon the pun) for disaster. Kirstie is willing to play ball and remain the spokeshottie for him. The deal goes sour when Kirstie rejects his offer of “private fashion advice.” Jeffrey accuses her of being insecure. Suffice it to say that this altercation revealed that frozen entrees have the ability to scar as well as heal. While the whole idea of someone without coping skills promoting an industry based on coping skills offends one’s sense of order, whadda ya think is gonna happen in times like these? His decision to have “Have you called Jeffy yet?” tattooed on his forehead was unfortunate. There was too much going on since in addition to the neckaroo thing he had “Fuck you Angela and Darlene” tattooed across his cheeks and nose.

I think the conversation here would be completely different had J been "allowed" to use the wigs. It would have exposed the gimmick bigtime.

I have no trouble with art that "challenges convention" but I like to see something more than rebellion for rebellion's sake. Just taking risks isn't enough, they actually have to pay off.

Call me bougeoisie, but I think clothing should actually be wearable and flattering.

I just can't ever see where Jeffery has actually thought about a woman's body in any of his designs. His clothes scream "think about the designer" not about the woman.

The clothes make the women all look like they are having a bad day.

I think his collection makes him look like a big poseur. A wannabe punk who is just different because it's "cool" nowadays.

I think his clothes are laughable. Those shoes are hideous, the only statement they make is "hideous".

Serious ugly is right.

And the thing about those long in front balloony dresses; if any woman who was NOT a model tried to walk down the street in those, all that goofy fabric would keep getting bunched between her thighs.

I have thighs. I know.

I'm an artist. I don't wear flare jeans and hoodies. I live outside 'the box'.

And I hated Jeffrey's collection.

"(beside the fact he beat Laura's @ss off and on the runway, many times!!)"
Um, no. In a fight to the death, who would win? Faux-rawker Jeffrey, or 8 1/2 months pregnant Laura? Yeah, that's right. She'd stiletto him right in his black, shrunken heart.

Macasism, you are SO DAMN right. Those wigs would have ended the speculation. It goes back to what I was saying earlier: HE PUT ON A CIRCUS SHOW. The wigs would have tipped it in Uli's favor FOR SURE. The judges would have known about the God-aweful wigs (and they were FUGLY to boot) and they wouldn't have taken him as seriously.

Beyond that, what in God's name made him think that putting wigs on those beautiful women's heads would make them MORE ATTRACTIVE??? Would make the clothes stand out? Who was it that wanted to do wigs before but it didn't work in their favor? (((thinking))) I recall it being a topic previously. Apparently our little peanut hadn't tuned in.

Please someone post a Photoshop'ed model with one of those ugly wigs on. Let's out this circus act for what it is/was, once and for all.

Popcorn anyone?

PLEASE! In honor of Laura's favorite holiday, Halloween, let's finally end the suspense and see the rest of her loft and hear about your visit with Bad Mommy and Bad Daddy!

What, no dripping sarcasm about the strings hanging from the swimming suit--so practical for the pool. A new technique for creating fashionable striped tan lines? A high-tech flotation device? Strings and wickety-wack do not innovation and artistry make.

Having been a runway walker myself I can give you a model's take on those damned wigs. They were meant to make the model invisible. TALP wanted to make everyone of those girls look alike which, essentially, would make them a line of bots indistinguishable from each other. His thinking was that wigs would take the focus off the girls and put it on the clothes but in fact it would have made everyone stare at the girls and totally space the clothes.

I wish he had used the wigs. It would have exposed his antifeminist tendencies.

When viewing the collection on Sparklies I noticed that the makeup on some of the girls was odd but only on the girls whose appearance could be described as outside the expected description of a high fashion model such as those with crooked noses, strabismas, gapped teeth or other unusual features. One brow would be arched and the other would be rounded if they were touched at all. Some of the brows looked deliberately messed up or deliberately not shaped. One eye would be slightly more made up than the other, the lips were asymetrical or lipstick was left off completely, false lashes were applied crookedly and not completely glued down and eyeliner looked like it was applied 3 days before and not washed off then reapplied.

I give them all a pass on the greasy hair because they didn't know until a few hours before the show that they would not be wearing those hideous wigs but either the makeup was deliberately messed up on TALP's instructions or L'Oreal should retrain the makeup guy.

The shoes were hideous, the clothes were wanna-be emo-chic, his neck tattoo is horrifying, the music was something one would commit suicide to, need anything else be said? Not to mention he's so self-centered it's unbelievable. Why did they choose him? Someone please enlighten me...

Please T&L fans.
We have fawned over the other 3 collection. Can't we get all get along and congratulate Jeffrey. He is a calculated product of himself(playing to production, just like Jay and Santino.) and blavo's creative editing.

I love you GT, but the image of Vincent in tomato boxers is now seared in my brain.

Now I see why T&L needs to take a break. This is snarkfest at it's
best. Carry on!

Blonde wigs. He didn't use them. Get over it. It is karmic intervention.

If there was no Sewgate, there would be blonde wigs and bubble shorts. He might not win.

Anyone seen the Heatherette spring collection? Barbie-looks are een?
The pleasantly surprised, een collection won. We can all agree that it is not the best, most wearable collection.

"Why did they choose him? Someone please enlighten me..."
************************
Okay sister, I'll enlighten you. He was chosen for the same reason that Vincent stayed on. Remember the garbage challenge when he had the recycled art school project? When he was confronted by the judges, Vinnie said he thought it was art -- and yes, it turned him on.

I remember looking at Nina and Michael and realizing that they were insecure enough in their knowledge of art that they wouldn't auf him. What if it was really art and they were chastized by fashionistas and artists later?

Same effect with Jeffrey. Peanut made garbage that would mangle women trying to swim, drive, walk, or stand next to slamming doors, escalators and elevators. It was ugly, incohesive tripe. HOWEVER, Jeffrey starts spewing b.s. about being inspired by a Japanese book on demons and ghosts. (Ooh, is that a book I should know about? --were probably Nina and Michael's thoughts. Sounds so important, so deep, yes, we must vote for him.)

Nina, afraid of selecting a classic designer was NOT EVER going to choose Laura. The hell with Fern and her saying she didn't want Jeffrey but Uli or Laura instead.

I'm afraid it is a classic case of the Nina and Michael fawning over the King even though he had no clothes.

Damn, I said I was going to be nice when the day started and now it's all gone to hell in a hand basket.

Sorry l n m,

So we should get angry at T&L? Nina? Heidi? Bravo?
Get another product sponsor, another producer, host?
Watch another network?
Yes, it is dishlecious snarkfest.

I hope T&L show us Laura's billion$loft soon. Laura fans are getting withdrawal symptoms.

Bollix, as the Brits would say. Peanut was lucky to be even showing at Bryant Park. Nina & Michael had three legitimate reasons to auf him during the course of the show, but for some cosmic reason they didn't.

Just 'cause Peanut had the most cohesive collection, doesn't mean he has taste.

His outfits scream FASHION VICTIM. Those blonde wigs would have been icing on the cake.

Jeffery won by default. M. Kors and Nina had already called Uli and Laura the one hit wonders of pattern party dresses and plunging V necks (no matter how unfair those assertions were). Fern loved both of their collections because she didn't have their prejudices. Mychael's collection was from the bargain bin of Call Girls R' Us or else he might have won on nice guy talent alone. Don't forget those magic words when the show ends: producers are part of the decision making process. Jeffery gives them an image that Uli and Laura can’t give from the practicality of their clothes. There needed to be some idea of edgy fashion forwardness as if that garners respect in the greater fashion community- no matter how true those statements are, it was the perception he gave and one the judges bought.

“I can see this girl at every stage of her life…” Kors about Jeffery’s collection.
So what then... from the unofficial berry princess of Strawberryland to a tart?

Anonymous said...

I can think of celebrities that would wear the collections from Uli, Mychael, and Laura. Which celebrities would wear Jeffrey's collection? Who did he have in mind?

The next day on the Today show, when he was showing some of those models and fashions again, there was a cold feeling in the harsh daylight of the real "everyday" woman. As one of the models posed with the 15 inch gap of exposed bare chest between her breasts, Jeffrey was asked who should be wearing this, and he responded calmly with that same old same old answer to any designers stupid fantasy: the "strong woman". Pity those strong woman who are never allowed to be strong, but should be hookers and extras in music videos.

Strong, like, if they hang with Jeffrey's Johnny Thunders notion of rock (where he took the name for his label from). Jeffrey can do fine in business I don't care, but his is just a bunch of cliches. I am shocked Tim mentions Vivian Westwood in some way related to his work, because Jeffrey somehow "translates the street" into fashion. Just compare Peanut's fashions with any photo from any Westwood runway fashion and they aren't even in the same cosmos.

anonymous 6:59 the only celebrity that came to mind was Jennifer Love Hewitt. THe short red dress with the white headband is similiar to alot of the stuff she wears on "Ghost Whiperer". Now if youll excuse me I have to go change into my pajamas for work (its pajama day!)....Laura would be so proud ;)

Give the Strawberry Shortcake model a sucker, and you'll have the perfect look for 8 year-olds everywhere...b/c that's the only age group that should ever wear a dress like that in public.

I haven't looked at this collection since the night of the finale ... and it's even uglier than I remembered.

I clearly don't understand the rules of fashion. When Tim asked Laura, "I have to ask, is it even pretty?" -- I understood THAT. But I don't understand how Jeffrey could win.

Frankly, Laura's wisdom aside, this looks exactly like the craftsmanship that one would pull out of his ass ...

Linda Merrill said...

I actually love the Strawberry Shortcake dress. It is young and fresh and the model's styling was perfect. I could see some young actress wearing it to an event. I did like the leather pants and strappy top outfit from afar, but someone pointed out the two different shaped/sized arms and now I hate it.

As for TALP being somewhat of a misogynist - I think he is. The wigs idea was to try to cram all those different models into one look. He's said other things that have struck me. Such as a couple of comments about "I sent Melanie out to the store to buy xxx". It felt like he uses her as an errand girl.

I have to say, I thought he'd win. He does push the boundaries and sometimes, that's not pretty. But, I don't think he's marketable. He's an innovator without perfection, whereas Laura and Uli are culminators - they bring their chosen styles to the top.

I'm thinking that Jeffrey's look, because it is very different from a more mainstream look (like Laura's collection), is something that the fashion industry (including Nina) thinks it can foist on we the consumers.

I mean, you can only saddle us with low-rise jeans and belly shirts for so long. Must be hard for the fashion industry to keep inventing new reasons for us to chuck our current wardrobes and invest in new ones.

I've lived through granny dresses, hip huggers, leisure suits...I figure certain of the fashion industry movers and shakers are happy (and relieved) at the prospect of having something new to market to us, and that worked in Jeffrey's favor.

Anonymous said...

Thanks for the receipe. I'm gonna serve me some Sour Grapes for my Halloween party tonight!

Anonymous said...

It's funny how T&L have ripped on all four collections and pointed out things that they didn't like in each one with not a word of complaint from the commenters yet the minute they say anything about Jeffrey that isn't complete smoke-up-the-ass, the Jeffreyphiles come out of the woodwork because they can't stand to hear one word against him.

"Sour grapes?" I don't think so. Immature fans who can't handle a difference of opinion? You bet.

"careful sloppiness and planned asymmetry"

Exactly! Though I think you could apply this to the collection as a whole. I actually loved Jeffrey's collection, because it kept surprising me.

And as much as I know you guys like to reserve the label of "wit" for Ms. Bennett, I have to say that Jeffrey's first three garments are the wittiest thing I've seen all season. Who else used the exact same fabric three times, but each time making it seem unexpected and different?

As Catherine Malandrino said in Paris about Jeffrey: "It's very audacious."

Indeed.
