In or Out: Diane von Furstenberg

Diane Von Furstenberg (with gay hubby Barry Diller) at MoMA's 40th Annual Party.

Honestly, we don't know how the bitch does it. She's 61 years old and by every rule in the book, she should look tragic wearing such a short, skin-baring, youthful dress, yet somehow, she pulls it off.

Let this be a lesson to you ladies. It's not as if she doesn't look her age. It's not as if she has the body of a 20-year-old. It's not as if she's been botoxed and siliconed into an unrecognizable plastic doll. It's simply ALL about the attitude and knowing how to wear clothes.

DVF Fall 2008 RTW Collection

Sure, it looks fantastic on a 20-year-old model. It's a beautiful dress no matter who's wearing it. But our gal Diane simply OWNS this dress when she wears it.

IN.

In other news, Bravo announced last night that the new season of Project Runways starts July 16th @ 9/8c! That's crazy!

  1. DVF is just gorgeous and cool no matter what.

  2. Talk about a role model for style and fashion! DVF is always fabu in my book.

The only critique I have is the color, but she works it well, so what do I know?

TLo you guys are absolutely right in saying that she can carry this off without botox, bronzer, and all the other artificial enhancement that's out there. I wish more women of her means and social stature would get the message. I can't remember her ever looking bad when photographed on the carpet.

  3. She looks gorgeous and I love that dress sans gloves.

    ReplyDelete
  4. And she is responsible for the wrap dress, the most flattering thing on the face of the earth! IN, IN, IN!

    ReplyDelete
  5. It's fantastic to see a woman like DVF who is a fashion icon not resorting to chemicals and surgery in a desperate attempt to look younger. She's 61 and she looks amazing and age appropriate. To see her being happy and fabulous in her own skin is an awesome example to women everywhere!

Well done DVF!! I only hope I can age as gracefully as she is!!

    ReplyDelete
  6. she is quite simply fabulous. she never looks like it was an effort. smart woman...

    ReplyDelete
  7. She looks great (as always) - the dress is reminiscent of Jay McCarroll's Chrysler Building bustier?

    ReplyDelete
  8. And Project Runway starts July 16th?????? Freaking awesome!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  9. She's fabulous. And her shoes are much better with the dress than those the model is wearing (and those gloves are horrendous). Viva la Furstenberg.

  10. She looks amazing, definitely IN. Her husband looks like an oldER Duchess, doesn't he? Maybe it's the sunglasses.

    ReplyDelete
  11. She looks great. The dress looks good because it fits her properly. It doesn't cling where it shouldn't. She know what looks good on her and makes it all look so effortless.
And, I agree with Isabella. Barry Diller does have a Duchess vibe going on!

  12. I hope to look so good at 61. Dayamn!

and 9 p.m. start time? so it'll be PR and Shear Genius running at the same time?! anything to beat the clock and Lifetime season, right?

    ReplyDelete
  13. DVF: My absolutely, positively favorite designer!!! I am her age, and have always been a fan. She is proof positive that "our generation" can look great without all the surgery, fake tans and pounds of botox. Even in our 60's, we can still have role models, and DVF is definitely mine.
(And as she said about Michael's hot pants outfit: "I've worn some hot pants in my time!") So did I, Diane!! We've still got it, girlfriend!!!!

  14. Actually, I think DVF looks better in it than the model. Hooray for dresses that look good on women with curves!

    Yup, Bravo overload!

DVF looks DIVINE, better than the model.

    ReplyDelete
  16. She does look lovely. DVF, you go, girl!

As always, the devil is in the details. Note the tweaks from the runway pic. The dress is short but not TOO short and skin-baring but not TOO much. And, most importantly: everything fits.

I agree: DVF's shoes are a much better choice than the model's!

    ReplyDelete
  17. I agree with Anon. The dress is slightly longer (than the runway) and the neckline is higher too. She looks great. By my reckoning she has had a little work done, but it looks natural, so good for her.

    ReplyDelete
  18. She looks great and she's always smiling... the hair, the makeup, everything looks great. Perhaps she can teach Vera Wang how to wear her own designs.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Do you think it's the joy?
    The serenity?
DVF always comports herself as though all's right w/ her world. Not lollipops & rainbows, but like she can handle what comes, including the passage of time.
    I adore her.
Her designs are always fascinating yet wearable.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Briar Rose, I agree with you. The dress looks much better on DVF than it does on the anorexic youthful model. There is a lesson for designers in there. You really can design for real women!

OK, DVF is a goddess, so she isn't really real though, right? Her arms and legs are in fabulous shape for her age. She rocks it!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Wow, she really is gorgeous in that. And if I may also say so, better than the model even! [/suck up]

I saw the ad for the new Project Runway season and I was like "dayum... they didn't waste any time now did they?"

On another note, is there any way I can sign up to be a student on Tim's new show? I want him to teach me how to dress.... I'll have to do some research. :D

  22. Does anybody know when Project Runway Australia starts? I'd appreciate any of y'all telling me? I know that it starts in July, as well.

    ReplyDelete
  23. DVF looks much better than even the runway model. IN!

And why does she look so happy and contented all the time? She's married to a gay man! We make fabulous husbands. We'll go see SATC and chick flicks with you. We do care about what you wear and how you look; we'll even give fashion input (lots of it). And many of us will help with housework and love to cook. And he's a rich gay man to boot. How could she not smile?!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Dear Donna and Vera,

This is how to dress yourself.

    Kisses-

    Diane

  25. AND DVF was a huge sun worshipper in the day. I can remember back in college seeing her somewhere like the Hamptons or Fire Island or one of those places and she was CRISPY. No idea why she doens't look like a Louis Vuitton purse by now....though the best plastic surgery is the kind where you can't tell......

    Hi wes,

    It starts July 7th.

  27. Definitely IN.

She's smart about covering up the bits that don't age well, and showing off what looks good.

The decolletage, the length, the heels, the colors. Perfect.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Hooray!!! I completely agree. She looks wonderful, head to toe.

    ReplyDelete
  29. She looks fantastic! I will be nitpicky and say that I'd have picked dressier shoes, but, oh, my, she rocks it.

As another woman of a certain age (and one who, like DVF, has great legs - if I do say so myself - and likes to show them off), I consider her someone to emulate, a true fashion icon.

  30. "Tlo said: It's simply ALL about the attitude and knowing how to wear clothes."

It is also a something that radiates from within (the 'It' factor). But how does she glow when her hubby is gay? Must be the pool boy.

  31. I don't love the dress. I think the V-detail makes the lower half look bigger (even on the model).

    Nonetheless, DVF looks fabulous.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I love how she slightly altered the dress to fit her "needs." It's all about the fitting and wearing what's right for you, poodles!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Very IN! She looks stunning!!! I love her, one of the best judges on the show EVER!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Absolutely in!
I own three of her gorgeous dresses and I just love how she understands women's bodies, and how to dress us.

    ReplyDelete
  35. She is the personification of fabulosity.

Both she and Barry are ICONS in their respective industries.

I would place them on either side of me at my dream dinner.

    ROFLMAO.

  37. So, so IN!!!!!

I didn't realize Diller was a "gay" hubby (thank you Jill Zarin, LOVE it). No wonder QVC took off as it did back when he was running the ship. ;-)

As for PR5 production, is there a Fashion Week in early July (talk about tape/production schdule here!) that PR can be part of as in years past, or are they going to have to wing it and have their own showing somewhere? Anyone?

    ReplyDelete
  38. PR is gonna be on before Shear Genius. How are you boys gonna keep up?!

    Love DvF.

    ReplyDelete
  39. DVF is fabulous - and I think the dress looks better on her than on the model!

I love that DVF is so comfortable, and confident in her own skin.

    I "heart" DVF!

  40. Attitude -- that smile! -- and excellent posture.

She makes the world a better place.

  41. In, of course. DVF is a member of the In Hall of Fame. She always looks fab and classy. It's that whole je ne sais quoi European vibe - looking effortlessly stylish. And the styling for her outfit was much better than on the runway model.

    ReplyDelete
  42. PS - July 16! Rush-edit manufactured drama, here we come.... Whee!

    -- d'wind

  43. PPS -- Any news on the NBC/Universal v Weinstein Company lawsuit?

    ReplyDelete
  44. In. Of course. Although it makes her look thick through the waist, that's a design issue, not down to fitting.

And her shoes are so much better for the dress than the shoes on the runway model - who styled that show?

    ReplyDelete
  45. She looks fantastic even though I'm not crazy about the dress. She's sure working it.

    ReplyDelete
  46. IN IN IN She will NEVER be out!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  47. A zillion years ago, when I worked as an advertising illustrator for a dept. store in Pittsburgh I did the art for the Tatiana fragrance launch at our store and DVF made a personal appearance for the introduction. I was asked to come and meet her after the Meet and Greet and was staggered by how beautiful she was.

The head shots they were using for her publicity at the time were very dark and moody and yet, here was this fresh and bright woman saying hello to me. She simply glowed. And the voice!!! I was reminded of her when I saw Carolina Herrera some years later. Both classic beauties.

And speaking of DVF and gay husbands, don't forget Prince Egon von Furstenberg! My friends said he wore out the ferry to Fire Island back in the late 70's. Of course, I'VE never slept with either of them so for me this is all hearsay.

Are they going to have to show their collections at September's Fashion Week??? And they're just filming now, right? That'll give the finalists less than 2 months to do their collections. Crazy is putting it mildly.

  49. So...

Instead of airing at 10 p.m., Project Runway will now air at 9???

I guess Shear Genius will be taking the 10 p.m. spot, right after next week's Top Chef reunion.

It's going to be strange to watch PR and then SG. I need a bathroom break : )

Poor Princess, barely had time to enjoy his 15 minutes of fame.

  51. DVF always looks impeccable. I ran into her once at Parsons and she looks even better in person.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I only just read that about PR5 on July 16th, how exciting!
I wonder if they are going to cram the challenges even closer together to get the designers all over wrought and emotional? I do hope we get to see some really good work not just big drama...

    ReplyDelete
  53. I almost feel as though I should start gearing up for the new season by taking a holiday.

Yes, I think DVF looks great and I like that dress. I've never understood women who decide to dress dowdy --at a very young age. I like that she's not some perfect size 6 whose been excessively nipped, tucked, worked out, and is trying desperately to compete with 20 years olds in looks.

It's her attitude and spirit that adds that glow. I've met way too many 30-something women who have given up and just don't have it.

    ReplyDelete
  54. DVF looks phenomenal. This woman is absolutely stunning every single time you see her. Remember her expression watching Little Lamb cry for about an hour?

    ReplyDelete
  55. DVF AMAZING with none of the telltale signs of surgical intervention that rob handsome women’s faces of their character. I love the shoes, the dress...congratulations, diva, you're IN!

That's awesome, Brian. Thanks for sharing.

  57. I'm thrilled at the announcement of PR5! Now, it's time to start looking for those annoying little teasers featuring the new designers. Do you recall the first time that you saw Christian? or Sissy Bear?

    sewing siren:
ITA: I hope this season isn't too crammed and jammed either, but my gut instinct tells me that given the big Lifetime move it's likely.
    Those poor designers...

  58. Oh, and in my book DVF is always, "in."

  59. The dress (and accessories) look much better on DVF than the model.

Those gloves and shoes are a tragedy! I much prefer DVF's metalic shoes.

    ReplyDelete
  60. DVF looks wonderful. She reminds me of my son's teacher this year, older but full of energy and a hella lively attitude.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Okay, she does look AMAZING, but that dress is hideous.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I could be wrong but I think that they are following the same timeline as past seasons with the September fashion week finale....and I think the entire series only takes a couple of weeks to film. Isn't it 8 weeks to work on the collections or am I imagining that?

    ReplyDelete
  63. Lovely. Energetic. Yes, DVF!

OMG! A Project Runway fashion show on the BRAVO Awards show I just tuned in!!!

    Review and pictures please, guys!

    ReplyDelete
  64. Excellent!!
I hope I look as good at her age!
Both she and Iman have the confidence and chutzpah to pull it all together.

This is why they would be IN if they were in sweats taking out the trash!

    ReplyDelete

Very IN. And ditto to what Meg said in the first post. Whatever "it" is, DVF has it.

    ReplyDelete
  67. DVF looks fantastic, but I don't particularly care for the dress. There's just a lot going on with it. Probably just me.

However, it does look better on DVF than the model.
