Congratulations, Jack!

Feh. The first sucky episode of the new season. We've been waiting so long for new episodes that we actually forgot that sometimes they suck. Whatevs, bitches. We'll have a post later today wherein we expound on the suckitude on display last night. For now, let's all take a moment and Jack off.

It's...just alright. Call us crazy, but the judges went on and on about how well-fitted this was and it doesn't really look it to us. The shirt is weirdly tight in strange areas and the pants are weirdly loose in some.

See? It's not us, is it? Doesn't that outfit give a lithe young studmodel a weird blocky shape? What's going on around his zipper there?

It looks like the waist is too loose or something and he pinned the pants on the model to keep them up. Plus, that shirt gives him no shape at all, which is odd because you'd think Jack of all people, if he's capable of making menswear, would make it a little form-fitting.

Another thing that bugs us is the lack of a belt. If you only made two pieces when everyone around you was making three, at the very least put some belt loops on that thing and give him a belt to finish the look. As it is, he looks like he's making a 7 a.m. shamewalk.

The fabrics are nice enough and we do like the bias cut trim on the shirt, which was well done. Design-wise, it's perfectly fine, if a bit on the bland side. We think there were more deserving winners, though.

As for the pretend "controversy" with the pattern-making...*shrug*. It never reached the level of stashing contraband books under your bed and besides, Jack did ask Tim ahead of time. Sure, female contestants could all come in every day wearing cocktail dresses and evening gowns and proceed to rip them apart to make patterns but you know they won't.

And yeah, he passed the pattern around to other designers but all that says is that Jack is a gracious contestant who looks out for others. The only person who really seemed to have a problem with it was Rami and he's a prissy, self-loving bitch.

  1. Kit was robbed. LOVED that jacket. For 3 seasons I have been saying "they need to make them do menswear"! I bet Emmett was pissing himself at home.

  2. By the way what ever came of the contraband pattern book Keith Michael controversy? Did you ever get the "real story"? Enquiring minds want to know....

  3. Agreed, there was some wonky stuff going on with Jack's outfit. But they all looked pretty bad. It's a hard challenge-- the client's body type is sooo different from that of a tall skinny model.

  4. Sure, the episode was boring if you were looking at the clothes-but as soon as the studs came in-I was wishing for an underwear challenge! And the way they walked the runway-totally Zoolander! And I loved seeing how some of the designers tried to save their hides with the crap that came down the runway! Too Funny!

  5. God, THANK YOU!! I kept looking at that and the judges are all moist and twittery and I'm going, "Really? The *winner*? Not just good enough to go to the next round but the absolute best design?"

I think they made Tiki pick it and he just picked the best of the bad, bad jobs.

I loved how Elisa was nervous about her model undressing in front of her, LOVED her totally un-self-conscious explanation about it. "I have a boyfriend, and he's the one I choose to touch intimately," was a breath of fresh air in the middle of all the heavy-breathing nonsense going on.

    Bye-bye, fake-crying bitch!!

  6. I think I'm a bit "over striped" with this outfit.

I like the concept of the shirt and the material for the pants is sharp, sharp, sharp.

    It's just not working.

    Hmmm...

Maybe it's the construction and the fit.

Perhaps a belt would have pulled it together more.

I liked the silhouette of Chris' outfit. Too bad the lighting still sucks the family dog outloud. Couldn't see any details or dimensions.

  7. I, too, was shocked that Kit didn't win the challenge, and now looking at the screen caps of Jack's outfit, I am even more dumbfounded. At the time, I kept saying "It would be better if he had the vest/3rd piece.", but now there's this weird "too much AND not enough" going on with this outfit. I just don't care for the pinstripes with the stripes (although I agree about the bias trim).

  8. I was shocked that Jack won. Not because his design was bad, but because Tiki was gushing over Kit's outfit. I thought for sure she would win this challenge. Jack's was O-Kay, not great. The bias placket and pocket were a nice touch. This challenge was very clearly a 'best-of-a-bad-lot' choice.

But that said, good on Jack. Now there'll be no living with him. ;)

  9. Oh, and what gives with winning even though he didn't complete the assignment for the challenge (three pieces)?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Oh, and in all the designers defense, pants are a red-letter beeotch to do well.

And I had to say, I started cracking up when Ricky let loose the waterworks at the end. There is definitely a drinking game there somewhere.

  11. ok, I loved loved loved Jack's first dress... but this, besides the fact that there was not a third piece, which is a big part of the reason Carmen got kicked off (she should have gone home, but still), i absolutely hated hated hated jacks outfit today. I was surprised it was not in the bottom three. Didn't Tiki want something conservative? There was no place for a belt, and all the stripes made me dizzy and- it was a loud obnoxious piece. Jack needs to get back to his a-game. I feel bad that Tiki has to wear that.

Kit was robbed- I want that fleece blazer- It looks so cool and comfy. I WANT IT NOW! plus, she thought about who she was designing for. everyone else seemed to be glad just to finish a menswear outfit, but she thought about how it would look on camera and the time of the show and everything. I was really impressed with her. Kit is becoming a bit of a dark horse candidate for he win

    ReplyDelete
  12. I agreed with the bottom 3 choices, but I wouldn't have put Jack in the top 3 at all. I thought Jillian, Chris and Elisa had much for finished, polished looking outfits.

  13. Sure, it was dull, but it was a step forward for Ricky who didn't start crying until 10:58PM. (A course record).

As for Alledgedly Straight Kevin (ASK, for short); (Yes Kevin, we get it. You don't have to announce it in every episode), he didn't do his Campaign To Make America Think He's Straight, by doing the gay gasp when he saw Tiki. And the bedroom eyes he was aiming at Tiki too: There was a definate moment there. I'm only saying...

  14. You know Carmen S-K-WEEZED more tears out!

I really don't understand why/how the MEN in this competition have never made clothing for themselves. I just don't get it.

Jack is Mr. Cutie-pie, but that outfit had NO focal point-nothing to draw the eye.

    Ricky cried again-do a shot!

  15. ...And if there was any question: Sweet P is the Jeffrey of this season. If that bitch gets all the way through til the end just because she's a nasty freak, I'll be pissed. I dislike her more every episode.

And yes, that Oakee Fenokee Swamp get up she made was incomplete. The thing that was missing was the Dueling Banjos.

  16. rant warning!

I posted a version of this on BPR: here's the unexpurgated version.

What the hell is with this "the best group of designers ever crap"? The vast majority of the outfits, finished or not, just sucked. Yes, menswear is hard. But in two different season, a bunch of contestants managed to do it better (Kara Janx, Chloe Dao, Nick Verreos, Jeffrey, Vincent, and Kayne). Though some of those looks didn't work out so well, even Nick's puckery girl-suit for Daniel was better than some of what didn't get called out last night.

As for this outfit, the screencaps are damning babes. I thought it was alright, but not great, on the runway. Jack's explanation that he wanted to send out two well-done pieces rather than 3 crappy ones is well-taken, but he shouldn't win the challenge then, though he should not have been out either.

Perhaps the bad fit comes from his unwillingness to "intimately touch his model." (Love Elisa.)

    ReplyDelete
  17. Tiki Barber? YUM. (But where was his brother? That would have been nice.) Carmen gone? YAY. Ricky making us wait until the VERY end to see him cry? Cruel. The drinking game creates itself, people.

I am now convinced that the judges don't actually look at the clothes when they choose a winner, but instead close their eyes and do "Eenie meenie minie moe." Because DAMN. Kit was SO totally robbed last night.

And am I the only person who thinks they give Michael Kors a bottle of sherry before each judging? He's like that great aunt that always manages to say something completely inappropriate around company. Lurve him, though--even with the loafers and no socks.

  18. "And yeah, he passed the pattern around to other designers but all that says is that Jack is a gracious contestant who looks out for others."

TOTALLY agree. I adore Jack. His outfit was dull, but he works & plays well with others.

It was nice seeing the comeraderie between designers in last night's episode. That is what was missing in Season 3, and what made it so unbearable to watch so often.

  19. Hate to say this...but even though Rami had his panties in a twist, I agreed with him. Thought that Vincent should have gotten called out on it last season, and I think that Jack only asked if they could use their clothes for a "reference point", NOT a pattern.

Oh, so who cares if Jack shared it? If I shared a crib sheet with students, would it make it okay? "Oh, she's so nice! We'll let it go!"

Anyway, yeah, that was a bunch of walking fug on the runway. I laughed. Poor Tiki. I actually met him and his wife (well, almost knocked down his preggers wife) when I was about 12 years old. REALLY nice people...he didn't deserve one of these outfits!

Yeah, and WTF on another thing. Jack won although he didn't complete the challenge? Whatever. I'm so over him. And the judges. They should have auffed about 5 of them, apologized, and just handed Tiki a check to buy himself a suit.

  24. And speaking of Kit, what's up with her hair? It looks like she cut her own bangs with a steak knife.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Yeah, sucky clothes. Whatever. Can we get to the good parts please?

I loved this episode for one reason and one reason only: Tiki Barber!!! So H.O.T.

I was hoping that the workroom surprise would be his brother so that I could indulge in my favorite Tiki-and-Ronde-Vous fantasy.

    *le sigh*

  27. I really enjoyed this episode! Sure, it wasn't a winner from the perspective of design, but it was fun to watch the designers freak. Plus, how adorable was Jack carrying Christian?

But yeah, Kit was robbed. Jack's was just okay.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Jack is cute and all, but how did this get the win? It looked like the pants were falling down.Kit was robbed. Maybe Tiki thought a fleece blazer would be too hot under the lights?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Wretched. I think Jay's girlfriend Elisa should have won. Kit's jacket looked too short to me. But I loved the execution otherwise and a fleece blazer just sounds great. I wouldn't try to make a suit on a dare, why on earth would people with no menswear experience decide to make the hardest possible thing on a deadline? I'd have made a dhoti, fergodsakes. Perhaps Tiki Barber (weirdest Polynesian job ever) could rock a dashiki and wrap pants? Anyway, "walk of shame"(but is it shame if you're a dude?) was exactly what I said watching the runway. Looked like a sorority quad at 9 am on a Sunday.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I didn't think Jack would win because he was totally getting the "winner's edit." Hmmmm... I guess I do overthink these things.

Anyway, I knew he was HIV+ because of the leaks before the show, but I would have liked to see the designers' reactions to the news instead of him just announcing it and then never talking about it again.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I can totally see why Jack won. Really, it was the only outfit that Tiki could wear on TV. I thought Kit's blazer looked too casual. Something Tiki would wear home from work but not on air.

However, Jack's shirt? Totally Robert Talbott from last year. DH owns one very much like it. Purple stripes, bias trim, etc.

How do you know it's not going to be discussed again? And why assume that the designers had any notable reactions to it? It's not exactly shocking for people who work in the fashion industry to encounter someone who's HIV+.

  33. I don't care much for traditional mens wear so from a design perspective the episode was a bore (but I always drink while I watch so it's never really a bore).
The pattern making for mens wear is so different and complicated, if you leave out little details (like belt loops) it looks a mess.
I am glad Jack won, because I voted for him at the last minute (woot). To me it looked (from afar) that Jillian, Chris, Victorya, and Rami's were better.
But over all the whole shabang was a mess.
Oh, part of the problem on Jack's pants at the zipper area, is it looks like he left off the back facing of the zipper. That would make it collapse like that and also make it a little dangerous to zip up (think "Something about Mary").

    ReplyDelete
  34. KIT WAS ROBBED! Not only did Jack not complete the assignment, but the fit of both of his pieces was wonky. Take a look at the zipper of the pants...what's with the gap?

  35. I could see Anderson Cooper wearing Kit's outfit because of the fleece, when he's covering some tragic outdoor story. Yum.

  36. Re: -moira-

No, I'm sure it'll be discussed again, but I just felt like the producers had him deliver such heart-wrenching news and then they moved on as if he had just chatted about a kid he missed, a design project or anything. I know HIV+ designers aren't necessarily a surprise, but even though there are more options now than there used to be, it's still a sad thing.

  37. Is it wrong I'm developing a crush on Christian? It confuses me, I've never liked a girl before.

  38. wow.
you boys thought this epi sucked?

Funny it was my fav so far this season. granted the clothes were mostly fug, but i loved everything else the epi brought.

    menswear, model candy, humor,.

the whole time i was thinking "i can't wait to se T&L's blogs this week" and you hated it???

    boo!

    ReplyDelete
  39. I thought last night was a perfect example of the Producers' hand at work. It comes down to Ricky vs. Carmen. Carmen hadn't screwed up yet (besides working with Christian, which wasn't her fault) while Ricky had now bored Nina. . . twice! His ass should have been gone. However, he cries at the drop of a, well, a hat, therefore he makes "compelling" television, therefore he stays for now. Annoying.

And I'm loving Elisa more every episode. She's gotten the full-on Vincent treatment -- wacky music and all -- but she seems like a genuine and nice person. Also, notice how that yoga seems to let her keep her wits about her? Nice to see someone with their shit together.

  43. MY EYES! MY EYES!! is what I thought when Jack's outfit came down the runway.

    But, man, what guns. Yikes.

The shirt was cool, but it's been done. How awesome would it have looked really tailored Let's say, umm, an athletic cut, for the umm, athlete? At least they gave them more time, it seemed, at least with the models for fitting.

My hubby is tall with broad shoulders and smaller waist and it's ridiculously hard to find business casual clothes. We often have to shop where athletes do for the same reason, and still get them tailored, or he looks like he's wearing he's father's clothes.

I think that's why I liked Chris' outfit so much. Conservative doesn't have to mean button down shirt and suit.

Kit's was different, and executed nicely. The pants were gorge. I liked Chris, Victorya and Elisa's too, although the vest kinda reminded me of Shrek.

And Elisa, please, grow up. Touch him "intimately"? Do the male, straight designers touch the female models "intimately"?
Honestly, anyone touching a garment and the model for a fitting is the same as a doctor touching a patient for an exam.

  44. I did not like this episode at all. I would not like to see any man in any of those outfits. They did not give them enough time to maky anything worth making. I felt sorry for the designers having to send that stuff down the runway. I saw Tiki on the Today Show wearing the winning (?) look...he did not look happy...

    ReplyDelete
  45. ooh, just reread my comment and it wasn't so much of a rant in my head as it came out on paper.

  47. I think Jack should have won. While the fleece jacket was well done and a change of pace, the overall look is not formal enough for the Today show. Jack made excellent fabric and pattern choices. Many of the other designers made fabric choices based on ease of construction rather than where the clothes were going to be worn. While the shirt did have some minor issues, I do not see that as being too important since Tiki will have one like it made for him as opposed to wearing the specific shirt. The same is true for the pants. Two moderately well done pieces suitable for a venue are superior to three well made items that are not suitable for a venue.

  50. I loved this epi. I've been waiting for 4 years for them to do menswear. This tomboy was much more squee about Tiki than I could ever be about SJP, and it was hilarious that only one of those queens even knew who he was. He is dreamy and gracious and just plain awesome.

Jack's was wack! When it came down the runway, both hubby & I screamed "ugh, stripes, too many stripes!" I think Tiki chose it because it was a nice fabric on the shirt and he could put a jacket over it and you'd hardly see any of it.

And the model fitting! Hello! This epi was awesome!

Also, this was my favorite episode of the season, precisely because of a small comment Christian made. "This is going to be a hard one to judge, because there's so much jacked up stuff going out there." He was so. right.

Amazing episode that had me laughing throughout almost the entirety of it.

I really though Stephen/Vic/Rami (ugh, and I hate Rami) could have been top 3. Vic's jacket is the ONLY thing I've liked from her thus far. I can't believe none of the designers tried to make a zip up track jacket. Those things look super crisp on TV, aren't too stuffy like suits, and still look professional.

Carmen was completely the right choice to go, and her "drape some fabric instead of making a shirt" will go down in PR awful history. I also think that her hatred towards Ricky was born strictly out of jealousy- she'll never cry as good as he does.

Jack's outfit was a mess. Why didn't he ask Tim Gunn to remove his impeccable wardrobe and slash it for patterns?

...doesn't Mr. Gunn always look like he stepped out of a bandbox? So crisp, tailored and tidy. Very urban. Very grown-up.

I was praying to the Saints that Elisa would spit on the model's crotch. Explain that stain with averted eyes.

  57. Sorry you boys hated the episode! I really loved it. I'd been waiting for a true menswear challenge, and I love seeing true meltdowns and desperation, and this bit was CHOCK FULL of all of those things.

I thought a lot of the designers just plain forgot who they were designing for. I love Elisa, but Tiki Barber is a former athlete and tv correspondent. He does not need to look like a well muscled Amish farmer.

ALL of the casual jackets(yes Rami, and even you and your piping) were completely inappropriate for the kind of tv work he does, and they would make him look boxy.

Kit was spot on with the casual blazer and nice pant.

I have no idea why Jack won, since he didn't complete the challenge. What kind of precedent does this set for the judging?

    ReplyDelete
  58. Definitely not my favorite. It was way too simple and basic. I don't understand the judges, they always claim that "BORING and SAFE" is a no-no and here they praised Jack for being "safe."

This competition should be about creating the best designs not about who has the least number of imperfections on the garment.

  59. I have to question:

...And if there was any question: Sweet P is the Jeffrey of this season. If that bitch gets all the way through til the end just because she's a nasty freak, I'll be pissed. I dislike her more every episode.

I don't see the similarity. Is it because they both have tattoos? When there was bitching in the sewing room, I'm pretty sure she was the one who told them not to get so nasty with each other. Seems like the opposite of Jeffrey, no? I've just seen her labeled a bitch other places and I don't get it, she seems nice and genuine to me.

I love Jack. He's sweet, smart and PURTY! I have to agree w/ the Duchess , though the outfit was well done, it would have fared better w/ a 3rd piece. Loved Keith's ensemble; my macho former Army MI hubby thought the purple shirt was wonderfully different and would wear it to work. Kit's cardigan was soooo Ward Cleaver I could not understand why it was praised. Bland to say the least. Chris M.'s was the fave. Unique, fun but dignified all @ once. 63. Other random thoughts:

-If you were going to be on PR, wouldn't you take a crash course or something is men's wear? Have they watched previous seasons?

-I thought the Jack HIV revelation was total foreshadowing. And it freaked me out (not necessarly in a bad way) when they cut to him sitting on his bed with the 20 or so bottles of medications.

-I actually found Sweet P kinda charming this episode. She seemed very genuine.

-Carmen should have ditched the jacket after Tiki's wife had such a negative reaction. Concentrate on making a great shirt or pants. Turn the jacket into a vest, or something.

It seemed like Tiki's wife was REALLY down on the "casual jacket" concept, since she told Carmen that her jacket was too "Members Only." Ouch.

And yeah, Jack winning without completing the challenge annoyed me. You don't have to send him home, but if you don't complete the challenge there should be some way to disqualify you from the win.

  69. I, too, have sewn most my life, including ridiculously hand-detailed jackets, etc. This challenge clearly favored those who have technical skills versus design experience. (I thought about whether I could have produced those pieces sans pattern and concluded, yes I could.)

That's why Jack's design threw me for a loop. I thought Kit had it hands down on design and technical skill. Being picky, Jack's shirt collar struck me as bizarre because a pattern maker would have cut it so that the grain/stripe would be lateral rather than vertical. Also, picking up on another comment, it looks like the pants zipper was too short rather than missing a placket (or whatnot).

Anyhoo, I was impressed by the designers who put out 3 pieces, including a lined jacket! A shirt and pants - not compelling. We must be missing a lot from not being there in person to get the full impact.

As for boring, I'm SO glad there wasn't any obviously manufactured DRAMA.

My question -- how much of the final decision was based on Tiki's wife's imput?

  70. I preferred Elisa's and Stephen's outfits, but I think Jack's outfit really is the one that would look best on Tiki, given Tiki's muscular build, dark coloring and need for something that looks striking on TV. Jack was so wonderful to share his "pattern" with the other designers that I was glad Mother Karma rewarded him with a win.

Carmen annoyed me greatly, so I was glad to see her go instead of the cryer.

Is it me or did Bravo try to generate some non-controversy by having Rami make two protesting comments about Jack and then drop the issue? If Rami had gone to Tim or the producers with his protest, or if had fought with Jack about it, I'd see the point of running this as a teaser for the episode, but it looked like such a non-issue to me. Just my humble opinion.

  71. I'm thinking Tiki might put a jacket over the striped shirt and will be sitting down so no one see's the pants when he wears it on the Today Show.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I don't get it. Tiki loved Kit's look. Hers was definitely a more interesting design (and better made than Jack's). She should have won based on 1. wearability and 2. strength of design.

I liked some of the other looks on the runway, but I can see why a lot of them wouldn't be great for TV.

For that matter, Kevin should have won over Jack as well. I don't see why Tiki couldn't take a bit of a risk when all the judges were praising the look.

I love Jack's shirt. I think pin stripe pants always look great on men, but I didn't see any true design innovation.

Jack just made good styling choices.

  73. the divine miss m said - "And am I the only person who thinks they give Michael Kors a bottle of sherry before each judging? He's like that great aunt that always manages to say something completely inappropriate around company." HA!! Love that.

mazeway said - "Tiki Barber (weirdest Polynesian job ever)" Also loving that!

Jack's outfit. Not loving that. The model looked like all the 20-something E&Y auditors in my office. Buy Banana Republic pants and a shirt that doesn't quite fit and call it dressed up.

Jack should have worked the Shoo Fly accessory wall. A great belt and killer shoes can jazz the hell out of safe, boring menswear.

I'm no fan of Opera Lloyd Webber, but I really was certain that Sweet P was going home. Her model looked like he got caught in a storm. That shirt was crap. Carmen obviously screwed up on time managment. But why couldn't Sweet P execute a shirt? It's kind of a basic item.

Who had their model sewing for them? I thought that was hilarious.

    ReplyDelete
  74. um, yeah, menswear + design = boring. How many ways can you cut a shirt? Lots, if you do it poorly!

    ReplyDelete
  75. I think my favorite line was was when Michael said that Heidi wouldn't mind if the jacket was too short so that all people would be looking at would be Tiki's bum. AS IF "The Duchess" wasn't all over it too!

And couldn't they have gotten models that were more muscular? C'mon there has to be a gym around parsons somewhere then we could have seen how the clothes would have fit the man.

That said, didn't care for Jack's look. Kit should have won it.

  76. The most important component of Jack's outfit was starch. That's the only thing that was holding the front steady.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Thanks, Gotham Tomato. I watched the video. Maybe it was because of the tiny picture on my computer, but those pants did not look striped to me. Were they striped? Did he just wear Jack's shirt with solid pants?

  78. It just goes to prove that any yahoo can drape a dress, but that real tailoring is something that requires some skill. Remember when Nina wet herself over Bradley's satin pillowcase that he sewed together in three seconds? Yeah, womenswear is soooo difficult and edgy, what with needing all of two pieces of fabric to make an entire outfit.

I think this challenge underscored that just about everyone thinks that s/he can design, but executing a concept is much more difficult than it looks, when details actually count.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Is it just me or does Jack look like a roided-up Jim Carrey from "Batman Forever"?

    ReplyDelete
  80. oh - and the striping on the shirt. Not a good choice for TV. Did anyone see Tiki on Today this morning or watch the video? The shirt "vibrated".

Kit talked about knowing how to dress someone for TV. Part of that is no checks, extreme or thin stripes, or herringbone patterns - they tend to have a moiré effect on screen.

    ReplyDelete
  81. I thought the outfit made Tiki look short and flabby. And *that's* after it had been expertly re-tailored by somebody who actually knew what they were doing!

And on the show he said, "Well I'm hard to fit..." and made it sound like Jack made the outfit that would fit *him* best, which annoyed me because of course he couldn't have gotten his thighs into any of those pants on the runway!

    ReplyDelete
  82. I was certain either Chris or Kit would win. Maybe a little too casual for the Today Show?
I like Jack but hated that outfit. Not just the eyeball-numbing stripe show, but there was something vaguely Ed Grimley-ish about the fit around the waist.

  83. Tiki - HOT HOT HOT
    Jack's outfit - Nina-Garcia-Boring!

    Kit was robbed!

  84. Anyone ever notice that when the client is picking an outfit to wear, they always choose the more boring designs?

I hate to say it, but at least Nikki Hilton picked something interesting for her challenge (tho I know not everyone was a fan, it was at least an interesting look).

  85. What is Jack's model holding in his hand in the fourth picture in this post?

    A camera?

    A hanky?

    The mysterious "third piece"?

    ReplyDelete
  86. I thought Steven's design was the best of the bunch with that pucci-esqe neck scarf.

I was really surprised that he and Chris were not in the top 3.

and I to am beginning to love the Princess, love how Jack carries him around....

    ReplyDelete
  87. i have to agree. jack seems like a doll, but i didnt understand why his design got so much praise. his super-fine model ended up looking like a mathlete. all he needed was a pocket protector and some thick glasses. plus, it was just too stripey stripey for me. youre right about a belt. it would have totally broken up all the stripes and made it look more cohesive. it really needed a third piece.

but the final product does look nice enough on tiki, so i guess i dont know anything.

it's a shame some of the more interesting designs were ignored by the judges. i didnt agree with the top three at all.

    ReplyDelete
  88. To Julie,

I thought those were cute moments when jack was carrying princess around. I smiled.

    I also love Steven's comments.

It's weird, him and stephen from PR canada make me laugh with their commentary. Odd they have very similar names and demeanors.

  89. How can Tim say that this is the best group of designers yet on Project Runway! This season has a complete lack of talent and very few actual people who know how to design and create fashions. By this time last season, I was already excited at what I had seen from Uli, Laura, Michael, Keith.......Chris and Christian seem to be able to create real outfits but it seems that the bulk of this years "designers" are not in the same league as last year's group.

Jack's outfit was odd......nothing special and Michael Kors was crazy to say the crotch was perfectly sewn. Huh? Kit and Chris were not even considered......their outfits were actually wearable, had 3 pieces and they did not receive the credit due them.

I remember reading a newsbrief here in the Dallas paper earlier this year....it mentioned that producers were not happy with the number/quality of the people trying out for season 4 of PR. After seeing the first three episodes of this season, I tend to believe that this story is true.

    It's raining men!

    Sigh.

This is the same outfit Tiki was wearing without the stripes. I don't understand why the judges loved it so much.

  91. JACK IS GORGEOUS...WHO CARES?

    ReplyDelete
  92. I hated the appearance on the Today Show. Tiki paid Jack absolutely no compliments: "It was conservative enough, and quite honestly, a lot of the other designers put together some pretty bad looks." How backhanded! I'm sorry Jack made such Charter Club catalogue clothes, but I'm more pissed at Project Runway for giving this challenge to the designers. At least Tiki back-peddled with that "time crunch" line.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Totally disappointed they chose a completely unoriginal outfit for the win. How unoriginal? I am currently working in Santa Fe (NOT one of the fashion metropoles) and one of our medical residents wore a similar outfit last week: dark blue pants with a subtle pink stripe paired with a striped shirt. I much preferred Kit's outfit and I think Tiki did, too. Oh, and is it just me or did all the designers look excited when they saw Mrs. Tiki because they thought she was Kimora Lee Simmons??

    ReplyDelete
  94. Can anyone confirm for me if Jack's model was Ian Jones or not?

I love the look of the guy and I've drawn him in the past. I'd just be curious to know if this was indeed him.

    ReplyDelete
  95. As Bill mentioned, Jack's shirt was the wrong fabric for TV - it strobed. I'm surprised Tiki didn't know that would happen. I liked the shirt, but even I knew it was not a good choice for a TV show.

    ReplyDelete
  96. I wasn't crazy about this outfit either. The different stripes did it for me. I thought Kevin's look was HOT. I don't think it was Tiki's style but still, gotta give a man some credit.

    ReplyDelete
  97. I love it - totally agree, Jack is way cute but his shirt and pants sans belt was not.

And thanks for pointing it out - it DOES make the model look blocky.

Also - should we start a running total of episodes that Ricky cries in?? I think so.

P.S. Mrs. Tiki Barber was major snooze fest – the woman has no discernable emotion. Her face looked the same the entire time!! Little excitement won’t kill you honey. And as for the so called fashion advice? It's not advice girlfriend when all you say is "Oh, he's gonna like that"

My fave part of the show? The gay boys saying "I don't know who he is but he's cute!"

    ReplyDelete
  98. Tiki picked the most boring outfit on the runway, but I don't know, I think he liked Kit's. By the way, I had no idea who he was, but the man is GORGEOUS!

I agree, I didn't see the point of bringing her in. I bet she wanted to be on the show so badly. She has zero personality. The Versace dress is ugly even on the model.

  100. I'm happy for Jack. he's a nice guy and deserves to win at least one challenge. What did you guys want? Another win for fucking Vera Wang or Miss Draped Flower?

  101. OK ONE MORE episode till i give up on season 4...When Jack talked about his HIV+ status, I was surprized.. did you see the giant zip lock bag of meds? I hope his health maintains during the stress of PR..

    ReplyDelete
  102. Moira: I'm pretty sure you are right: I couldn't remember anyone saying that the outfit had to have three pieces, so I'm not sure why so many folks seem to think that that was an integral part of the challenge.

That having been said, I thought Jack's design was a snooze-fest. Kit's wasn't my favorite outfit either, but I did think it was going to be the winning design -- I think it would have worked better on-screen and on Tiki, it was better executed overall, and Tiki seemed to like it a lot. Puzzled.

Oh, and as for why Tiki's wife was there -- I can answer that! Didn't you hear the emphasis Tiki put on the words "MY WIFE" when he was first introduced to the crew? It's Tiki's version of Kevin's constant "I'm straight!" refrain: "Hello, all you designers! Now, I know you men are all oogling me right now -- sorry, but I'm married. WIFE! MARRIED! What do you mean, you don't believe me?! LOOK!!! HERE SHE IS!!!"

    ReplyDelete
  105. Here's what Nina said on her blog:

"Jack's outfit was Tiki's favorite. Although it was executed better than some of the other designers and had the bias pocket detail, I found it : A. Boring; B. Safe - he only produced two pieces and no layering; C. Was unoriginal -- he used his own pants as pattern -- although he
asked -- only redeemable by the fact that he shared the pattern with the others."

    Love her. Love you boys.

    ReplyDelete
  106. I didn't think it fit that well, either. I agree that it was just OK.

    ReplyDelete
  107. This challenge was doomed from the start. At least Jack kept Tiki's muscular, squat body in mind as he designed.

I thought Chris (who scarcely got any air time) made the best comment: pants are just two shirt sleeves sewn together. Hah!

  108. littlekarnak said...Oh, and is it just me or did all the designers look excited when they saw Mrs. Tiki because they thought she was Kimora Lee Simmons??

Why would the designers (or anyone else) be excited to see Kimora Lee Simmons on this show?

  109. ... or maybe that was an "all Asians look alike" joke that I didn't get.

    ReplyDelete
  110. The stripes give a moire effect when photographed, which is really distracting. It probably looks much better in person. It is nicely sewn and well-pressed, but I think Kit was robbed.

    ReplyDelete
  111. I have to admit - when I saw Mrs Tiki Barber come thru the door, I thought for a hot second it was Kimora Lee Simmons! I even yelled out "OMG It's Kimora Lee!" And then....blah....!!!

    What a let down!!

    ReplyDelete
  112. Jack's outfit led to this very odd Moire effect on the Today Show. Guess that's what Kit meant by telegenic.

And did you notice what Tiki said after, some of the designs were bad?

    He said,

    "well, they don't do men."

Spat out my soda on that one. Even though I know he meant menswear.

  114. I thought that outfit was very dull, and Kit should've won. At least she had a 3-piece with some personality!

Can't believe Tiki appeared on TV in that 2-piece! Bleh.

Frankly, Jack is NOT one of my faves. At least the woeful final duo was spot on.
