Vera Wang Resort 2008 Collection

Darlings, it's time to look at Vera Wang's Resort collection, but we strongly urge you to ingest a handful of anti-depressants before viewing.

These are both pretty cute, actually. Those muted neutrals are definitely in this season even if we think they're a little drab.

Those shoes are horrible.

Ugh. The very definition of drab - and we hate the lines on the one on the right. Highly unflattering.

Vera darling, there's no need to be afraid of using a print now and then. These are okay, but still boring.

Less for a cruise and more for a political refugee just getting off the boat.

Save us from the metallics. But hey, at least these have a little life to them. We especially like the one on the right.

That yellow and white combo seems to be big this season but we never really liked that combination. The one on the right? Spinster chic.

Okay, we like the one on the left, if only for the use of color. The one on the right? Feh. It's alright.

Is Vera going through a depression or something? That one on the left is like a rainy day in clothing form. The one on the right is just plain ugly.

These are both pretty cute, although we don't like all the weird unflattering pleating on the one on the left and we're still not crazy about that yellow and white combo.

Cute, but still depressing.

The left: nice. The right: fug.

Fug. Fug.

Vera, kitten! Have a cocktail or something!

  1. There wasn't a single garment in there that was flattering! Every outfit looked poorly fitted and baggy. It looked like the models draped curtains around themselves and cinched in odd places. They looked tenty, and some looked kinda deformed. Forget the colors, the shapes were horrid.

The past couple years I've been noticing this trend of baggy, oddly pleated and cinched clothing, and I've always hated it - if a dress can make a stick figure look like a misshapen sack, what would it do to a real figure? The last couple collections have given me hope that designers are moving back to clothing that fits properly, but this one is scary.

Sorry to be so judgmental - the migraine is making me grumpy.

  2. Vera lost her dad (they were very close) the day she showed her Spring line. It may have had a lingering effect. I was depressed for more than a year when my bff/mom died. I can relate.

  5. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

TLo, you are right on with forcing a cocktail down Vera's throat. Somebody over there has to shake that poor woman.

Flashes of blue, thumbs up. the shapes, the yellow/gray/taupe/black/white, both thumbs way down. My throat, that is. blech.

But I don't have to be depressed to see that collection blows chunks.
At what resort are you staying to wear those sacks? Bellevue? Betty Ford?
I've always adored Vera, but this collection should be filed away under, "What was she thinking?"

  7. Ooops, I said something snarky before I saw Anon's comment about Vera's dad. It was mild snark but snark nonetheless, and I would not have said it had I known she just lost her father. Been through that and I know how that affects one's work and home life. My apologies to Ms. Wang.

I'm honestly not in love with any of the resort collections I have seen so far. Time to go see what EMC2 is going to come up with!

  8. The models all look sad and slouchy. I suppose that's the direction they were given. I wonder if some of these clothes would have looked more alive if the models had been directed to pose with some vibrancy.

  9. I kind of like the fabric necklaces. They reminded me of the one Uli made for the black and white challenge.

  10. I think she's still depressed over her father's passing several months ago. While it will always be sad for her, hopefully she will work through the depression and make happy fashion again. This was dull.

  11. Some of the fabrics are pretty (even beautiful) but the majority of the lines remind me of the way I dress when I'm 3 months pregnant and showing a little but not ready to tell anyone.
    I love that turquoise color.

  12. Not sure that depression would be the explanation for this collection. Some of the most iconic works of art have been created by depressed artists. I mean, go to a museum like the Met, and you'll find entire wings full of nothing but great paintings by depressed artists.

This collection was just uninspired & unflattering.

  14. As Laura Bennett most famously said (can't find the exact) during the garbage challenge:

There's a lot of serious ugly going on here.

Vera, oh dear Vera. Join the reality train or go back to desinging skating costumes. That collection was the suck.

Fern Mallis said it best. This market is BEGGING for an explosion of Uli prints and colors.

  15. I absolutely love the fabrics and the colors she chose, but I hate the shape of almost everything. The ancient Rome inspired pieces are also interesting.

  16. Uli's PR Collection is better resortwear than any of those you boys have covered. More wearable by more people, colorful, sexy, interesting. Maybe Tim will land her a deal at Liz Claiborne.

  17. Love Vera, hate the cut and color on these things! This collection would be a sartorial improvement for two ladies only: Britney and that Brook Hogan trollop. Have you seen the way those girls dress lately? When you are outdressed daily by the cashier in Wal-Mart automotive in Stillwater, Oklahoma ......gray, dumpy, and oddly pleated sacks are a step up.

For the rest of us, not so much.

  18. Make that 4 martinis

  19. ...well, at least her wedding dresses are still rocking.

  20. So, no love for her concept? I get the "ballerina grunge" thing here. I for one am a little sick of the "pretty."

  21. Ok, in my quest to say something positive, some of the looks have really nice box pleats. I'm a HUGE fan of box pleats. Of course, the metallic fabrics and odd shapes (not to mention bad pleating everywhere else) really overshadow the nice pleating work, but at least there's one good element.

  22. I like the metallic dress with the rope-cinched waist because it's shaped like, y'know, a dress. I'm also not totally opposed to metallics.

But boy, when you can see the bruises on a model's legs it's time to break out the panty hose!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Ugh. The clothes look just like her. Flat and boring.

Darling, this is definitely the collection for you!

  25. Oh my! I didn't realize it was "tent chic" for the resort this season. I must have missed the memo. Good lord that was some serious ugly. The only thing missing was a potato sack with a belt. If I wanted to wear a burqa sans headscarf, I'd head east. There is absolutely nothing remotely wearable for a real woman in that collection that doesn't want to make me down a whole bottle of prozac.

  26. i don't like the cuts on most, but i have to say i like the "stormy day" colors (on some of them at least). i think that dark grey/blue with lighter neutrals and yellows is very fresh and calming.

  27. Fancy flour sacks.

  28. there were a couple of cute things - I agree with the T-Lo assesment. But the models? A plate of sandwiches and some bronzer were desperately needed And what is with the bruises?

  30. Sorry, but Vera Wang is way overrated.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Meh. I didn't even have to click on the photos to start gagging. I wouldn't wear them to a dogfight.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Blah. That's all I gotta say. That and I'm back! Big hugs!!!

    ReplyDelete
  33. maybe the bruises are there because they were on one of those cruise ships where they throw people off after a night of heavy drinking?? kind of a thematic/ high concept thing?

    ReplyDelete
  34. omg.. too funny.

I think we are in accord about Vera.

Thanks for the good laugh. Your comments where hysterical!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Oh, god, horrible. Just plain awful.

This is resort wear? Okay, "resort", going by the comments to the last few posts, means different things to different people, but whether we are talking vacation/cruise wear or LA/Miami all-year-round wear, "resort" clothing should be FUN. It's about rainbow-colored cocktails at sunset! And sunrise! And on the beach! All day long! FUN!

Vera's stuff, on the other hand, makes me think rain and slush and storms and drinking bad whiskey to forget how bleak and cold and miserable everything is. Only it's not working.

Vera needs an intervention. Like yesterday.

  36. vera, honey! tres horrible!

  37. Yes, resortwear. A resort for dried up hags. Vera, have TWO cocktails darling and call me when the depression is over!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Ouch just ouch.
    Those are all pretty gross.

    ReplyDelete
  39. that was kind of frightening...

  40. the last one, brown and red, looks like something Friar Tuck would wear.

  41. yellow + white = fried egg

Not the look I'm going for, personally.

  42. Whatever happened to imagination?

I guess I've been spending way too much time on Fabulon!

  43. I dunno, but I could happily slouch my way through Italy in a couple of these rags.

  44. Those are the ugliest dresses I have seen in my life.

  45. If Wang was in a depression then she needed an assistant to step in/up and help with the designs of the line. This crap is going to put the company under if it goes on for much longer. Yuk.

  46. Tell me exactly? What made her famous? And did she forget what a woman's body looks like? Some of us like to show it off.

    ReplyDelete
  47. i am sorry but

i kinda like some pieces of them.

also i love vera wang!!!!! hey i love your old works actually............................

  48. I'm sorry she's going through a pretty rough time but that is some ugly clothes.

I never understood that, I mean, aside from the wedding dresses.

  50. Ah, Mariana, I hope I am understanding your statement, so forgive me if I did not. Please be aware I am all about the tongue in chic:

As an earthy Euro woman whose hormones are still raging, I love showing off a shapely thigh, when appropriate; my cleavage, when courting a man; my waist, when I have one; my bum, which jiggles seductively in all the right places (so I am told); my silky white skin, when I am not sunburned; and my clavicle, which is my best feature next to my fine eyes.

Our dear Vera, I fear, is trying to cover up all that is spectacular about our female bodies. If you are trying to attract your main squeeze or resurrect a moribund marriage, this collection would be a major disaster.

If you are trying out for a job as a librarian at a recovering sex addict's rehab house, then this wardrobe is perfect.

  51. Dumpy, Frumpy and Sleepy went to the beach.

That collection definately needs alcohol eye surgery! Talk about BORING!!!

    ReplyDelete
  52. Ms. Place: I don't think that Mariana was commenting on your statement about women wanting to show off their bodies; I think she was seconding your bewilderment at Vera's popularity. I believe she was saying that other than Vera's wedding gowns, she agrees with you about the ugliness of Vera's duds.

I may be wrong, though. I often am.

  53. I hate everything.
Here's a very interesting article on Vera Wang:

“Bridal pays the bills. But mostly, licensing pays the bills,” Wang says. “And that’s what makes the ready-to-wear possible. Whatever losses I incur with this, I cover with fragrance or with china. I’ve never had that kind of money before.” These days, there are four apparel divisions at Vera Wang. There’s bridal and bridesmaids, there’s a line of dresses at a bridge-level price point (they average around $550), and then there’s the ready-to-wear. “What the ready-to-wear does is create more visibility for the brand,” says Susan Sokol, the company’s president of apparel. “And these are the opportunities that drive the licensing opportunities. It’s a domino effect—you can’t have one without the other.”
