Project Runway Season 7: Meet Jay Nicolas Sario

It's kind of weird doing these after seeing the first episode. We can't make predictions anymore.
A Filipino jockey! THAT'S what the show's been missing all this time!

Jay Nicolas Sario
Age: 31
Hometown: The Philippines

Favorite designer(s)?
Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, Marc Jacobs and Rodarte.
Current occupation?
Visual merchandiser and lead stylist for Gap Inc. in the kids' division.
What is a fashion must?
Pairs of expensive, great-fitting jeans and big sunglasses.
What are your strengths as a designer?
I have the advantage of being a both a stylist and a designer.
What's influenced your designs over the years?
Texture and three-dimensionality play a big part in my designers.
What's your favorite material or fabric to work with?
Wool, tweed, denim, leather; anything that can give structure and texture.
Do you prefer patterns or solids?
Both.
What are your favorite colors?
Green.
What fashion faux pas drives you crazy?
Flare jeans and Ugg boots together.
Favorite designer from past seasons of Project Runway?
Christian Siriano.

Honestly, we would have pegged him as the super-serious and focused type, but then...well...:

The hell? Obviously, it worked. We just had a scathingly brilliant idea.* Some film school dropout needs to start a business making audition videos for potential reality show contestants because each year, the bar gets raised a little higher.

*Identify the quote and you get no prize at all except our love and admiration.

Well, Uncle Nick sure liked his stuff. Let's check the portfolio:

It's interesting. We love the skirt and jacket. Can't really make any judgments or predictions on such a small sample, but we have to wonder if someone so wedded to those techniques is going to be able to handle the time crunch.

I love his video. I like his skirt & jacket.

I love watching how much the producers/assistants/whatevers enjoy hearing the contestants reactions when they hear they've won. So much more so than the staged shots of the contestants being told.

And wasn't "scathingly brilliant" in some Hayley Mills movie? Sharper minds than I will have to confirm, and identify the movie, or deny. Bill, where are you?

for "won," read "made it onto the show" It just feels like winning, for just a minute there.

The Trouble with Angels ;)

That coat is to die.

I like how the white rag dress looked as the model was running around, heh.

He looks promising, but I wish he had more to show so as get a better read on his talents.

He's okay, not amazing. Wouldn't care if he had to go home first. The coat with the ruffles is to die for, but it's okay.

the thing about Uncle Nick is that I used to like him and care about his opinion - but I thought he stunk it up in that judging last season (Althea should have been out), so now I am suspect.

I was expecting to hear some the song they used in oldie movies (was it in the marx bros, when a chance scene went back and foth across the screen)?

That was a really clever little audition video. Loved it!

Those riding boots are too big for him, but he's a cutie.

I hope he's not like that guy last season who had hardly anything in his portfolio and then turned out to be a colossal tool, unable to sew, and made Ra'Mone do all the work when they were paired.

I like the "rag" wedding dress and the jacket. The skirt's pretty cute, too. With as little as he has shown, he has some good pieces.

I see a Christian like jacket and two Leanne type skirts - in addition to the dress.

I love his audition video, because it says as much about him as the others without being boring as hell. Yes, yes, we know....you're pretty well established but want the exposure that Project Runway can give you, you're a creative little snowflake and the world needs to see your designs, blah di blah. But at least this one entertains. :-) I hope he sticks around.

The Trouble with Angels!!! I LOVE YOU GUYS. - Jack

I wonder if that mens he's responsible for those terrific ragamuffin commercials that ran before Christmas.

Oh, GT, I DESPISED those Gap commercials with the kids especially. Thank the gods the holidays are OVER!

That video was a riot. He'll at least be entertaining, but I agree that I don't know if he's up to construction that complex with the time constraints of PR. We'll see!!

does not look interesting, at all
that dress looks very derivative of one leann marshall did some seasons ago...
good photographs but poor fashion...he's out

This high school film student would like to make videos for potential reality stars :P

The Trouble with Angels!!!!!!!

Oh my god you guys rock!!!!!

Haha at the concerned look on Tim's face when he said, "it's not haute couture, it's COAT couture!"

D.D., Jack, and Fashion Fanatic, we love you.

"Zippy said: Oh, GT, I DESPISED those Gap commercials with the kids especially. Thank the gods the holidays are OVER!"

LOL, I thought it was like a cute, updated 'You're Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile'-type number. And I loved those outfits.

Of course, if I had daughters I'd likely not like the commercials - because I'm thinking there would be a lot of whining and begging for those clothes - (and there were lots of layers there to buy).

The Trouble With Angels - best movie ever! And now I love you guys even more. :)

I love the mop dress, especially the way it moved in the video. I like the fabric sculpting he does. He is different and creative and I look forward to seeing what he does on the show. But more black and white? ::crosses self shuddering::

Late, but, The Trouble with Angels, of course. Whenever it comes on cable my sisters and I all squeal with delight and text each other like mad that it's showing. Just thinking about the ending makes me weep a little.

Anywho, loved little Nicolas' video (I literally screamed when he did) and totally dig his *one-two-three* looks. Hope he's as talented and as much of a hoot in the workroom & on the runway as he is in his audition video. Oh, and love the hair and boots.

CALLING HIM AS MY FAVORITE!

Season 7 is on already?

At first I feared that "I have the advantage of being a both a stylist and a designer," translated as "I cannot sew." But after seeing the videos and the portfolio, I stand corrected. This one will be innnn-terrrrrr-esssss-ting!

The Trouble With Angels. Oh Hayley Mills...oh Rosalind Russell...oh clear closeted teenage lesbian relationships.

Seeing the Hayley Mills/Trouble W/ Angels quote makes me miss Musical Mondays...

More and more I like what I see this season. They all have such distinct POV.

"Pairs of expensive, great-fitting jeans..."

That is not a good sign. Why expensive?

Good video.

I love that his favorite color is green, and i want that jacket in my closet NOW!!

Where is the rest of his portfolio? He hardly showed us anything except a goofy video.

I like all three garments in his portfolio, but it is odd that for man of 31 years to only have 3 garments to show.
The sketch is rather banal.
I don't see the former contestants so much in his work as in his name, which appears to be a combination or variations of former popular contestants. How unfortunate for him.

the quote was easier than you thought. I often use that phrase when talking about (what else) a scathingly brilliant idea I have... and usually find that someone in the group says "Haley Mills - in that nun movie!"

I am sure you are full of scathinly brilliant ideas!

Anybody who lists Alexander McQueen as one of his favorite designers and "Memoirs of a Geisha" as his favorite book can't be all that bad in my opinion.

Adore the mop dress, as some have called it. The way the model is perched on the ladder, it looks more like a peacock to me, sans color. I wouldn't throw the jacket in the trash either.

I love his work! Supper styled and constructed - but will he have enough time on the show to 'produce' with the limited time constraints?!

He is totally adorable, and I like his stuff.

Zippy, you read my mind. I loathed those Gap Kids commercials.

The audition tape is clever. I'm curious as to what this fellow will bring to the table.

Because expensive jeans tend to fit much better and last much longer than cheaper brands.

Just what every woman wants - ruffles across her ass to make it look bigger.

I did think the rag dress was interesting, and his audition tape was adorable. I wish he had brought more garments, or at least different ones.

He should be interesting to watch. Definitely a POV there

I'll throw in "The Trouble with Angels" as well, but specify that it was the signature saying of Hayley Mill's character.

well at least his favorite color is green

"Take off her binder"

:-D

The Forgettable Show had Merlin -- not Filipino, but definitely Jockey-esque.

Except for the fact that he's not Filipino and wasn't on Project Runway, that's a really good point.

OMG, "The Trouble with Angels". My sister and I would watch it every time it was on. But even as a little Catholic girl, I thought it was bullshit that she joined the convent.

I love the raggy mullet dress, and the jacket. And he's cute and adorable. I'm looking forward to more from our Filipino Jockey.

In love with that little glimpse of his work :)

I like his portfolio, what little of it I've seen. And his HAWT!!! HAWT with a capital HAWT. Love to see more of him.

I have never seen "The Trouble with Angels." Now I must.

ahhh he better make like manny pacquiao and represent! love him already

My fave in the Trouble with Angels was wonderful Rosalind Russell. She was scathingly funny in her career.

*Trouble with Angels. Fucking classic. Love that movie. In fact, a few months ago I made this masterpiece (http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=45564301&l=ce91a66ca8&id=1912237), feel free to use it.

"Just what every woman wants - ruffles across her ass to make it look bigger."

I have seen some variation of this comment quite a few times and I finally have to say, I do! I have a slender apple shaped body. Great legs and arms, but no butt or hips and absolutely no waist. (36-33-37) So, I want a dress that makes me look like I have some curves

HE'S ADORABLE! I want to take him home. He probably has a ton of cute outfits, like a barbie doll.

I kind of like that rag dress. It looks better in movement than it does in the picture.

another laura

Oh no no no, darlings, have to go with Gotham Tomato here, the Gap little girls' Xmas commercial was TO DIE. I loved that one! Forget those frilly dresses! How cute are these boots!

As for Jay Nicolas Sario? I wish him all the best. Have noooo idea how PR 7 is going to work out. I'm still not pumped except for the chance for Tim Gunn to expand on "I'm derailed!"

I agree with April 100%. I have a similiar non-curvy apple figure, so some added elements around the hips or butt would do me good.

THE TROUBLE WITH ANGELS! You guys are the greatest.

The Quote is from "Where Angels Go Trouble Follows" Starring Miss Haley Mills.

Haley Mills, The Trouble With Angels. :)

I love his stuff, liked the clothes in the interview more than the portfolio, but it's all caught my attention. Plus I love his personality, he seems to radiate really positive energy. Plus he's a cutie, so he's got my vote for now. :)

Love his work!! My favorite so far.
His full audition video is really funny!!

I wait for the day when you also use a quote from the fabulous sequel, "Where Angels Go, Trouble Follows."

It is from the movie "The Trouble With Angels" for probably the
100th time. :)

All right, so I shouldn't judge based on a frickin' audition video, but I find myself wishing I were young enough/fab enough to be the adorable Filipino jockey's fag hag.

Very Leeanne - ish....

Wish him all the luck. Went to college w/him in Hawaii. Great artist but hopes he doesnt buckle under pressure (happened alot when deadlines needed to be met). MABUHAI JAY!

Странно, искал совсем не это, гугл выдал Ваш сайт, и судя по всему не зря, есть что почитать! Goodwork!

That coat is to die.
