Last, but DEFINITELY not least.

Anthony Williams
Age: 28
Hometown: Birmingham, AL

Favorite designer(s)?
Zuhair Murad.
What is your design training?
University of Alabama, and Linda Sears of TK Designs challenged me to sew better.
What's influenced your designs over the years?
An appreciation of luxury and a better quality of living.
What is a fashion must?
Confidence.
What's your favorite material or fabric to work with?
Silk taffeta.
Do you prefer patterns or solids?
Solids.
What are your favorite colors?
I celebrate all colors done correctly.
Who are your favorite style icons?
The cast of Dynasty. Diahann Carroll exuded confidence, beauty, grace and luxury.
If you weren't designing, you'd be . . .
Working with the Miss USA organization.
Favorite designer from past seasons of Project Runway?
I really enjoyed Austin Scarlett.

"The cast of Dynasty!" How can you not LOVE that?

Aw, that's sweet.

There's no queen like a southern, black queen. He may be a little lacking in some areas (why did we not see any of the pieces hanging on the rack?), but they knew they had a character on their hands. Clearly he can sew and clearly, he's a walking soundbite generator. We like this one. He looks like he's going to be fun. Although to be honest, that whole "I grew up in the ghetto" schtick is gonna get old if he doesn't have the goods to back it up.

And speaking of goods, let's look at his portfolio:

Umm... as far as we can tell, that's it. That's his portfolio. It's not exactly fashion-forward, but it's dramatic and very much in that Dynasty vein that he was talking about.

Oh, who cares? He's gonna be fun. We can tell.

I can't wait for tonight!! But until then I'm going back to bed to sleep off my hangover.

I can´t wait either, excited!!!

I'm all for investing in a single, killer black dress, but maybe not this one.

Maybe if my name were Sammy Jo...

Suz

That dress reminds me of those Viktor and Rolf dresses with the odd shapes and cut outs - how they appear to distort the body.

Interesting but a little uncomfortable

Thanks for saving the best for last, guys. Loooove Anthony! I can't say much for his portfolio either, but clearly he's passionate about what he's doing and is a character to boot (I think I watched his videos on Lifetime pre-PRG, like, half a dozen times each).

I've noticed all the promos have featured Anthony and his soundbitisms (stereotyped much?). Anyway, I hope he's got the goods because he's a hoot and seems like there will be shenanigans all around (love his line to Nina on the runway --- but I won't spoil it for others who haven't already seen it).

It looks like my wedding gown (from 1985). That doesn't mean I don't like it, but I think Zoe's comment about seeing O de la R and CH are pretty dead on. Still, I like him. I hope he does well!

PS - can't wait for tonight! When does the TLounge open?

Anthony is adorable...so looking foward to this new season!

Well, he'll definitely be entertaining. Can't wait to see more of his work!

On another note...
TLounge! TLounge! TLounge!

I'm concerned. He seems to have been cast more for his character, which is adorable, than for his abilities. This feeling would have been mitigated by seeing some of the other clothes he brought in with him. The white dress, for example, looked simple and appealing, but I didn't get a good look at it. I hope he can sew! I would hate to see such a sweetie crash and burn.

Yes, he's a character! Love him so far. At least he will be entertaining and hopefully fun to watch.

He reminds me of Kayne, a little bit.

I hope he sticks around for a while!

The Queen is always last through the door - "All stand - the Queen has arrived!"
Good Luck Anthony!!!

Good Lord, I know that not everyone has access to tons of models and interesting locations, but that's the saddest portfolio I've ever seen! He has to bring it!

Guys, dudes, kittens and minions, you are looking at MORE Atlanta or should I say "HOTLANTA" influence.

Take R&P Hip-Hop, add in the University of Georgia sorority girl who attended the Westminster Schools and whose grandmother is a Dowager Duchess Buckhead Matron, throe in big hair or haie enhancement pieces then tie it in a bow with a pageant sash from Miss USA/ Miss America and you have the Atlanta look.

Pageants are big business in Atlanta, Birmingham too for that matter. I right off the top of my head can name six pageant boutique that custom make/design gowns. They start at $3000,00. Proms and the Junior League Charity Balls in Atlanta look like the runway at Miss USA. The only difference being the jewelry may be real.

Anthony Williams is another great version of Mychael Knight or Mr. Baldy Chattanooga from TFS. This guy can design, cut and sew, but like Mychael Knight and Mr. Baldy Chattanooga, editing will be the problem. More is More in Atlanta!

If you do not believe me, and there is no reason why you should, check out the repeat episodes of The Real Housewives of Atlanta.

He's funny but his portfolio reminds me of Tlo's line: "Oui, oui, je suis tackee."

Perhaps he's Kayne's brother from another mother. I don't think he'll go all the way. It sounds like at some point "taste level" will come into question. No matter, I like him.

He cracks me up. Love his accent too.

Love him! And I happen to like glam, over-the-topness probably more than the next girl, so I hope he can bring it.

He will help make the show fun, but if that is all that they show from his portfolio, it is a pretty safe bet that he was chosen for his personality, not his designing skill.

So I predict, if he is as fun as he sounds, he will make it to the half-way point.

Amanda,

I was seeing Kaynebow too! He seems sweet & fun and Tampa Bay, you're SO right on with your assessment of the HOTlanta vibe.

promises to be interesting!

"...serve as a beacon to other people who are like me." I don't believe there is *anyone else* like you.

The cast of Dynasty! There are people alive who don't know what this is and would have to Google it!

He has them to his knees though and I salute him for the courage to not only leave the house but be on the mean streets of Georgia in that aqua sweater.

I like his turquoise sweater and his violet pocket square.

He has the greatest smile! It makes me happy just to see and hear him. So I hope he makes it all the way.

That said, the Atlanta esthetic is...troubling. And while "derivative" does seem to sum of his style, I do kind of love that black dress and the black/purple dress he showed Tim. And the necklace is fab!

I like him too because it comes through that he really likes women and that he really likes clothes. I'll bet on a great clothes horse any day.

I do not think "taste level" will be his problem as much as over designing and under editing. As TLo has stated many times, there is nothing wrong with Hoochie Mama and "hooker by the pool" if it is done well a la Donatella Versace.

I like him, already.

TLounge tonight?

He has the sweetest smile. And, for a gown of its genre, I really like his black gown.

But unless he can really work outside what seems to be his metier, (sorry too lazy to do the accent) he will last several episodes longer than he should because he's entertaining, and still not make the final 3/4/5 (whatever number it is this season).

And Tampa Bay did a pretty good job of nailing a particular southern demographic, from my observation.

Mr. Baldy Chattanooga is Reco.

Reco + Mychael Knight = Anthony Williams.

Reco, Mychael or Anthony can come to my house anytime to drink my wine, drink my booze and custom design for me!

TampaBay

I can't see the videos right now but I'm guessing from others he has quite the personality. Design wise, all I get to see is the dress. I hope it gets better than that.
And ugh!!! I'm missing tonight's episode because I'll be flying into NYC. That's one thing I miss about Bravo. They played it a million times and I could watch it while doing housework. I seem to always miss repeats on Lifetime.

There's no queen like a southern, black queen.

There's an entire book on the subject, ">Sweet Tea: Black Gay Men of the South. If you ever get the chance to hear the author, E. Patrick Johnson, run, don't walk, to the venue.

How adorable. I love his response to the derivitive comment.

Oh, my he is the southern belle, isn't he?

Like Joan (quoting Tim Gunn), "I'm concerned." He and yesterday's entry, M. LeNoir, seem to have been selected for reasons other than design ability. I wouldn't be surprised if one of them is auf'd tonight, although it has happened in past seasons that people with strong portfolios have been the first to go. So one never knows, do one?

I lived in B'ham for a year or so and can attest to the fact that those girls are all about the Pageants and fashion drama.

They hold the Apollo Ball there every year. Black tie for guys and floor length gowns for the women (even the lesbians, no Ellen suits for the Mystic Krewe of Apollo). They have a debutante presentation of all of the new "girls" on the circuit and the grande dames are all in full hilt. They spend all year working on that stuff.

Can't say as if I remember meeting him, but he certainly seems to fit in that group.

Seems totally sweet, but not long for the show.

Already tired of the "when you come from where I come from" schtick.

Loved that turquoise necklace with that shade of pink/whatever it's called.

Tim looked very concerned. I bet he voted thumbs down.

I spent this past November and December in Atlanta. I lived in Atlanta for 10 years and still have many friends there. I have a very good gay friend who is a very very successful decorator. I always visit him when I am in Atlanta.

Last time I was there he showed me pictures from a Charity Ball sponsored by a Gay & Lesbian charity group. All the gay guys had lesbians for dates and vice versa. I told him that was the stupidest thing I had ever heard of and he should have taken his boyfriend as his date! My buddy told me that in Atlanta you can do and be whatever you want to be and no one really cares but people who were "raised right" and are a member of "polite society" do not do things in public and on the street that may "frighten the horses". I rolled on the floor laughing!

TampaBay

Looking again at the black tiered gown with the lace bodice, I keep thinking "SHE by Sheree". This gown looks like something Sheree Whitfield and Mr. Dwight (the 6th RHofAtl housewife) would have designed.

TampaBay

He's kinda cute but kinda annoying too. I didn't hear any "soundbites," just a lot of rambling about nothing in particular. Each of your "points" should not require 100 superfluous sentences. And his 'style' doesn't do anything to me from a fashion perspective. Meh.

I'm just happy that someone is finally representing Birmingham. No, we are not the mecca of fashion in the south, TampaBay hit the nail on the head, but Bham is an interesting little spot and I'm glad to see a fellow Birminghamian on something other than American Idol. I'm sure he won't go that far, but whatever. He's my guy for now.

Anonymous on 1/14/10 at 1:22, I love Atlanta and Bham. If you ar a person who likes to dress up and better yet likes to over dress Hotlanta and Bham are the place for you.

I once attended a private by invitation cocktail party in Birmingham that started at 5:30 PM and did not end until midnight. My kind of place! I love the true deep New South, "polite southern society" and all the crazy wacky customs.

TampaBay

All he needs is a tiara!

Yeah, not much of a portfolio but he's adorable and has the possibility for some Southern Belle bitchiness, which is much preferable to our last sewtestant.

Bring on the TLounge! I'm ready for a nice shot of Patron and some fashion!

RTR*! We won the NC, and we sure as heck are going to try to have our first PR winner from AL!

*"Roll Tide Roll!"

PS: I didn't know that UA had a fashion design program.

OK was he auditioning for Project Runway or Miss America? Nevertheless I am looking forward to getting to know him - the derivative discussion cracked me up. Hopefully he lasts long enough to keep me entertained while I get all of the names straight. Now if he can pull off some real Dynasty glamor, I am not going to be mad at him.

TLo said...There's no queen like a southern, black queen.
Add when you add spiritual into the mix, then you really got something.

Truth be told, I enjoyed living in B'ham much better than Atlanta.

But I find it interesting that all we have to talk about is where he's from as opposed to what he brings to the competition. I actually have him pegged as the FTG.

Daxx, I think where you come from very much influences you POV on everything especially design and fashion....I present Uli as exhibit A....and Bob Mackie/Nolan Miller as exhibit B and Halston/Bill Blass as exhibit C.

Also, Anthony did not present much of a portfolio to rip to shreds!

Let's go get a drink at the TLo Lounge. First round is on me!

TampaBay

LOVE.HIM.

I don't even care if he can design or not - they could give him his own show right now and I'd be happy!

Happy Premier Day all!!

He's adorable.

If Project Runway doesn't work out for him, he's needs to have his own series on Bravo! The world needs more people like Anthony.

Total cutie! -I picked my pony in Episode 1, and his name is Anthony Williams.

LOVE HIM!

He had me howlin' this first episode.

Love you, honey. You are a hoot.

TampaBay
1/14/10 11:15 AM Mr. Baldy Chattanooga is Reco.

Reco + Mychael Knight = Anthony Williams.

TampaBay

Correction:

Reco + Jerrell + a splash Mychael Knight for ATL flava = Anthony Williams.

Wow..I get to know him. I must be a pretty lucky guy. Good Luck Ant / From your special guy.

I know Anthony personally, & let me say that his work is PHENOMENAL!!! He certainly has what it takes to rise above the top & continue to soar... I am so proud of him! As one designer "from the ghetto" to another, I wish him much success on your journey!
