Project Runway Season 7: Meet Janeane Marie Ceccanti

It's Leanne 2.0, ladies!

Janeane Marie Ceccanti
Age: 28
Hometown: Willows, CA

Favorite designer(s)?
Riccardo Tisci for Givenchy.
Current occupation?
Designer and owner, Janeane Marie.
What is a fashion must?
Vision.
What is your design training?
BFA in apparel design from the Art Institute of Portland.
What's influenced your designs over the years?
Literature and history, especially fashion history, music, art and lately, earth science and space.
What fashion faux pas drives you crazy?
Oversized pants. Thematic dressing. Silliness.
What's your favorite material or fabric to work with?
Wool! Silk! Linen! Fine cottons! I love all natural fibers and work exclusively with them.
Do you prefer patterns or solids?
Solids! I've been wanting to use prints more and more, though.
What are your favorite colors?
Black. I have a tumultuous relationship with color.
Favorite designer from past seasons of Project Runway?
Leanne Marshall from Season 5. It's the only season I've seen!

She seems sweet. The Leanne comparison probably isn't fair but hey, she's the one that brought it up. Like Leanne, she makes pretty, girly clothing, heavy on the construction and detailing. We like her portfolio and hope she soon discovers the magic of prints.

How odd that she's only seen one season of Project Runway.

Clothes are nice but nothing too new. I'm going to despise it if she really decides to keep her colors limited to neutrals. One season of lack of color was enough.

I like her clothes, but I LOVE Leanne's. We'll see...

Love her clothes! I really do.

Too much neutral.

Is it a Europe thing that these vids don't play on my computer?

I like her clothes a lot. But you have to be fast to do that kind of construction on PR.

Not quite so crazy about how she describes the fabrics for her fall line, "hard shine metallics with absent colors" mixed with softer knits.

Willows? Really? That's pretty darn podunk. I do like her overall aesthetic. I can't believe how much I am looking forward to this season. Everything has to be better in 2010, right? Even Project Runway?

@Grgg

I haven't been able to watch them in Canada either yet, so they might be US only.

she needs to get a job at White House Black Market - they would love her clothes.

As I started to scroll down through her portfolio, I thought - I love these silhouettes but wish she'd use some COLOR.

Then got to the pieces she used color with, but didn't like the colors she used.

I think that the pieces on the front end, that are mostly black, are her best pieces, but not because they are black. It looks like she added color to the weaker pieces (maybe to save them?), but the colors don't make them work.

I'd love to see her incorporate better color stories into her best work - because I think there's a lot of potential there.

I love the black jackets and the tanks. One to watch for sure!

Apparently, she used to be an intern for Leanne -

Her clothes are interesting but the slow meandering way she talks puts me right to sleep ....zzzzz

I LOVE these clothes. Very much in my aesthetic. I wear all neutrals and then use accessories for color. Way easier to update stuff season to season that way on a limited budget. Can't wait to see what she does when they throw a non-natural fabric at her!

Grgg and Emma:

It is a US only thing. I'm a Canadian in US for the Christmas week, so my present was getting to watch all of the designer vid's while I'm here. Now I just have to remember them in reference to these posts.

LOVE her portfolio.

I think I'm going to like this one.

She is kinda like a mini Leanne but distinct enough to be able to tell the difference. Good stuff, can't wait to see her on the show.

@Michael Jones - you're just saying that to make me jealous, aren't you? ;o)

I hope the natural-fibers thing isn't her downfall. She realizes that she'll have to work within a punishing budget or with unconventional materials, right?

I'm in Germany and I can never see them either. Feel your pain!

i really like her stuff, even if it could use a little color. i think she'll be one to watch. On a personality level, Leanne didn't exactly set the tv on fire either, but her talent spoke volumes.
If a more suitable nickname doesn't surface, can we call her Willows? It truly is podunk, trust me. If someone can make it out of Willows and into the fashion Big Time, it's inspirational.

@Momsy- how do you know about Willows? i'm from Redding :)

I'm with GothamTomato--
I see real potential, and can't wait for her to develop her color.

It sounds like she has been in Portland for a while-- definitely not a total backwater!

She does great specialized work that takes time (even though I'm not crazy about her stuff). I bet she crumbles.

What is UP with this sleeveless, corset, heart-shaped bodice thing recently. Is this a new trend? First the essa on LML did it in her first (ack) jumpsuit in the black and gold, and this chickyboo does it twice in her portfolio. Do not like.

I like her use of color blocking (or should I say non-color blocking?) but I'm so tired of solids, black, solids, black. I think it's interesting that she owns right up to her issues with color and print. Maybe there's hope for her! Admitting you have a problem is the first step!

It's not that there's anything wrong with solids and black in moderation, I'm just burnt out. That kind of aesthetic kind of screams "I have no sense of creativity" to me these days.

I think she's really got potential. The collection is hit & miss, but the stronger pieces are pretty strong and show there's something there to be developed.

If she opens her color palette, she could be a contender. Her portfolio seems the most wearable so far.

I don't mind the black as much balanced out with the white & grey. I like the Brown/red print and the color blocked skirt, but the other pieces with actual color, especially the orange-red don't really work for me. Nice to hear she wants to branch out into color & prints, maybe she'll use her time on the show to experiment.

Lower your pitchforks and torches folks, but I kind of like Janeane's work as it has been presented. Personally, I see nothing heinous about a limited palette if that's what she wants to do right now and if she feels that specific designs call for neutrals as opposed to "brites." I
love Janeane's color sense (or the lack thereof!) and even liked the little injections of color at the end of her collection.

Anyway, I wish her luck (although PR7 is already in the can) and look forward to seeing what she can do with the challenges. She's got talent and seems really sweet.

I'm in the US and have to use the Explorer 32 bit system to see the Videos, the newest version (64 Bit) won't play them. Flash videos have not caught up to the 64 bit system yet.

Girl, you had better have watched more seasons of PR by the time you started working this show. holy cow.

I like her. I love what she showed at the audition and she gets points for citing Tisci as her favorite designer.

way too much black and white in her portfolio for my taste. bring on the color!!!

I like the silhouettes, don't like the funereal black, black/white. But as GT commented as well, I don't like her use of color much at all. There is a whole world of color between brights and black. I hope she can discover it.

Very interesting designs. Quite frankly, I don't know if her creations (at least what I see here) would work in color or print. I totally see her love for Riccardo Tisci, he also likes a lot o black and white.

She seems sweet and focused. So far, I'm loving them.

she looks like tina fey.

do these videos work outside the US?

I love the contestant portfolios.
The models are always MODELING.
Yeesh! They should try and do less of that. Just a little smize is all it takes ladies.
The clothes are boring.

I think she makes beautiful clothes, but I'm worried that the extreme time constraints of PR are going to crush her.

And I'm so bored with black and neutrals that her use of color seemed refreshing to me, even though she went with rather difficult colors.

I give her five episodes tops.

I'll echo what everyone else has said about wanting more color, even though I wasn't a fan of most of the colors she used. I'm intrigued by her construction and detailing though. I have to admit, I'm already more excited for this season than the last one, based on just portfolios and previews alone.

I want look 4 NOW.

Just sayin.

I find her giggly stammering explanations annoying. Could be I haven't had enough coffee this morning...

The videos never work outside the US. It sucks, sucks, sucks.

She's from Portland...may she doesn't have cable? Cute clothes but nothing edgy like Seth Anderson. We'll see.

Is it a Europe thing that these vids don't play on my computer?
