LML: Runway Rundown

To hell with your holiday shopping! We've got dresses to rip!

Kathy & Emil

Y'know, all things considered, this wasn't that bad.

The good parts: the shape and the colors.

The bad part: tentacles.

Plus the fact that a mini-kimono doesn't exactly call to mind the beach. Still, it was an interesting attempt.

Vanessa & Tressa

IT'S A CHRISTMAS CRACKTACULAR!

It is also, of course, quite awful. Even if we could embrace the, shall we say, campier aspects of this look...

...we just can't get past the sheer ugliness of that...

... and that. Indefensible craft project crap.

In other news, Tressa...

...designed this dress, which was worn by HeidiKlum Samuel recently.

Merle & Thai

Man, were these bitches ever robbed.

That skirt, with its layered hems, is gorgeous.

And sure, the sleeves were a little gimmicky, but since each entry is supposed to be part of a line, Merle has already established that her line is supposed to be gimmicky.

Bottom line: even though this team was egregiously ignored, there's no doubt in our minds that they're definitely the ones to beat going forward. They have a clear concept for their line and a sense of style to make it interesting.

Bingo.

They go through all the trouble to bring the Oracle of the Future in to talk to the designers. She says orange and aquatic shapes will be the trends for Spring, 2010.

And the one dress that embraces all those trends comes in second. Even though one of the judges says that this dress would compliment a variety of body types.

This contest was to be about putting together a line for real people, not about designing for Jennifer Lopez. Let's hope they get that back on track.

The judges hated Kathy's tentacle dress because it was too literal, then they give the win to the dress with an actual butterfly on it. Maybe I don't know what "literal" means.

Anyway, it's great to see all this color.

I really liked Merle's dress, and thought it should have been the winner this week. I preferred it way over the filmy sarong thing the DJ came up with. And I've seen mini-kimonos worn at the beach, so it didn't seem all that off the wall to me.

how did Merle & Thai not win this week?! D:

Yes, Merle definitely should have won. Gorgeous color too.

Loca's pants are so stupidly stiff.

"Brush Fire" Kathy's kimono (sans tenticles) was pretty, but not beachy in the least. And my biggest problem with the tenticles (aside from the ugliness) is that they didn't fulfil the "silhouette" requirement of the challenge. A jellyfish silhouette is about the shape of the overall garment, isn't it? Not adding some random physical attribute of the animal. It would be like one of the butterfly people adding antennae. Literal indeed.

When Merle's and Thai's dress came out, I immediately wanted it. Orange isn't a color that I wear often (or ever, quite honestly) but would love to own that dress.

While the tentacles were stupid, I loved the color combination of Kathy's dress. She's definitely not afraid of colors!

I loved Kathy's colors. But it was supposed to be a dress, right? That it looks more like a robe is as much a problem as the tentacles. Still, there's something attractive about it, the colors are great, and it works with her yellow dress.

I think there's a customer for Vanessa's ideas, only with Dan or Dean's editing, which made all the difference: sleeveless with embellished pants, or embellished sleeves with skirt. Much improved, either way.

I'm not crazy about Merle's dress, though I can't figure out why. A little too Stevie Nicks, perhaps? Still, it probably should have won.

But I'm concerned because it looks like Merle is wearing a Shelly O breast belt around her cardigan!

I missed the beginning of the show. . . were they all supposed to incorporate the color orange in their designs or something? Kathy's has no orange I can see, yet they said something about architect guy's working in some orange . . . ????

(By the way, architect guy should go to that music awards post to see the Marchesa Rihanna wore -- then he'd see how to marry architecture with fashion.)

I totally agree with everything!! I couldn't believe that Merle didn't win with that dress - it was fabulous. And I love aqua and red together, and kimonos are great beach cover-ups, so I don't know why they didn't think it was beach-appropriate! It wasn't a winner, but not bad at all. But Vanessa? Oh, brother. Surely she will be gone next week!

Bottom line: even though this team was egregiously ignored, there's no doubt in our minds that they're definitely the ones to beat going forward. They have a clear concept for their line and a sense of style to make it interesting.

For that to be the case, the judging would have to begin to match the quality of the rest of the show.

I was not terrifically impressed by the Merle/Thai look, but (a) I didn't find anything in jellyfish/butterfly to get excited about, and (b) it was immensely prettier and more tasteful than the winning look. But hell, they got immunity anyway, so who cares.

Merle was robbed-- I can't wait to see more from her.

Did anyone notice the makeup on the
CHRISTMAS CRACKTACULAR outfit??
It fit the outfit! I guess Tressa is letting her partner maintain her vision-- and hanging her out to dry.

BEST TITLE EVER by the way boys!

OMG! I know Thai. I didn't realize he was on this show (I don't have cable at the moment). That's awesome. His dress is gorgeous and I hope he makes it far in the competition.

I don't want Vanessa to get eliminated just because I want to see what other crazy kitschy shit she comes up with that she thinks remotely is fashion. Humor on a campy contest show is always appreciated!

Merle should have won. That dress, while not my personal style, moved beautifully on the runway and works with the first piece in her line. And met the friggin challenge.

I really liked Kathy's. The fit is superb on that kimono and the colors are yummy. The tentacles are ridiculous. Shave those off and it's a great dress. But beachwear....no. Yachtwear, maybe. In my closet, definitely.

Much better than the butt ugly shower curtain that won.

Merle's outfit (we called them scarf dresses) is 1985, down to the cork-soled shoes. And I had a man tell me one night, when I was dressed that way with every bit of gold jewelry on that I owned, that I looked like a gypsy.

I loved the orange dress! It's very similar to a fuchsia gauze dress I wore in the 70s - I immediately decided to make one for myself. It's a perfect tropical climate dress that could be worn for many occasions, suits many body types and would work equally well on a variety of ages. I could not believe this was passed over for that tacky J-Lo outfit that reminded me so much of those horrid butterfly sequined tops from the 80s. Blech.

I loved Merle/Thai's dress. It reminds me in a good way of a gauze dress I had in the 80's that I absolutely loved wearing because it was so feminine and floaty.

Did anyone notice the makeup on the
CHRISTMAS CRACKTACULAR outfit??

What? You don't like the 70s?

"Tlo said: IT'S A CHRISTMAS CRACKTACULAR!"

Actually, I was going to say Donny & Marie, circa 1978.

Yeah, Merle/Thai were indeed robbed. I love the dress more seeing the details and the close-ups of the skirt in the screen shots.

I thought it was sort of cool in a snobberific kind of way when Merle referred to Punta del Este and the aesthetic of underplaying things. Next to Vanessa - poor thing; all of her taste is in her mouth - you figure at least one of them doesn't fit the show.

I have been recording this show and tried to watch it this afternoon. I couldn't do it. It was so painful. Ugh. I even removed it from my scheduled recordings on the dvr.

HAHAHAHAHA! Yes it reminded me of the 70's too.
And having lived through the 70's I'd prefer not to go through that again.

Merle's was the best of the lot, but even so it was just SO 70s and it really looked to be the top of the "butterfly" dress on the trend board, and the bottom of the "jellyfish" dress. Or the other way around. I don't recall. At any rate, I like Merle and root for her, and feel confident that SHE would never make a garment versatile by putting a shoe rack on the back of it.

While I thought that the kimono--without the tentacles--was cute, it was just not beachy. If it were a bit longer, so that it could flow, sure. But as it was, it just looked like a cover-up for a naughty nighty. That you would wear in Bikini Bottom.

Totally agree!! Merle and Thai had the best dress. Even the color was divine.

CRACKTACULAR!! Will have to use this this Holiday season!

The Judges missed the mark!!
Thai did a beautiful job with the tailoring.

I do appreciate the way show is insulating the experts from the designers. Vanessa, clearly, is some sort of crazed Christmas ornament, but Tressa seems like she designs genuinely interesting stuff. When not enslaved to a glitter harpy.

Merle and Thai's dress was just lovely and deserved the win --- a divine & delicious color choice, a silhouette that would flatter most any shape and figure, and a unique, sexy and flirty bodice (personally, I wished they could have gone with a more neutral or even turquoise-hued belt rather than the pink stretchy one). I'm thinking positive though, and have faith that they're in for the long haul, which means we'll get to enjoy more fabulosity and creative surprises from them in the weeks to come.

As for that unfortunate look from the two 'Essa's, I still cannot wrap my brain around that matchy-matchtastic monstrosity. I think they went so far over the edge with the applique/patchwork gizmo and got all excited about it that I'm actually surprised they didn't create an additional little matching drawstring purse and bikini for the look.

Ah, poor Vanessa! I can just see Jenny, high as a kite, standing on the wall of that balcony as Free Bird plays in the background...

Vanessa and Tressa's entry - dear God!!! Were they kidding???? Please, I need bleach for my eyes!!

It looks like I might be the only one, but I actually thought Vanessa's outfit was not bad. Sure, it needed serious editing (I thought the "mosiac" on the sleeves looked OK on the TV, but up close it's pretty bad, and the ones on the pants are even worse), but the overall shape of the outfit is much better than I thought she was capable of, based on last week's ass jumpsuit.

Maybe that's why I liked it - b/c it was much better than I thought she was capable of, rather than actually being good by itself.

I even thought that Kathy's kimono was pretty good, sans tentacles. OK, sure it doesn't scream "beach", but it was cute, wearable, at looked well-made, at least from my view on the couch. I would wear it (although not necessarily to the beach), if the tentacles were extracted, and I can think of quite a few people who might actually wear it with the tentacles intact.

As far as Merle, I don't think there's anything else I can say except MERLE WAS ROBBED! Oh wait, one other: last week I predicted her convertable designs would rapidly go from "cute" to "gimmicky" to "OMG I'm so sick of this" but I'm already changing my mind. I think the skirt that pulls off and turns into a wrap or whatever is cute for 1 or 2 or maybe 3 looks in the collection, but would be tiring if used over and over again. But, if she "fills in" the collection with subtler transformations along the line of the sleeve-pull in this week's dress, together with the sophisticated style she's shown in both of her looks so far, she could go far.

Merle was robbed, her dress was the best by far.

Merle, Patrick and Vanessa are the only ones who understand fashion, they know exactly what they want. I hope they go all the way.

Merle was robbed? Sure, I guess, especially considering the atrocity that won. Personally, I find the show a bit of a bore. The "celebrities" are not terribly interesting and their ideas about "fashion" are often laughable, when not completely dull and predictable. (The world doesn't need a lot of things, but surely near the top of the list is another celebrity fashion line.) The show is okay as filler but little more, and the judging panel is awful. The hosts are okay (but show serious lack of taste) but those two women, whose insights into fashion are non-existent and attempts at snark laborious, are simply dreadful. In my book, this is another Bravo DUD.

Did you see Merle's expression when her outfit didn't win? Priceless. We had picked this dress as well; the layering in that skirt is to die for.

Oh, my God! Would somebody pinch me, I thought I was watching an old "Miami Vice" episode!

I liked the architect's outfit, but I was wrong about last week's outfit, too. Oh, well-as you call these "bitches" have the marketing angle down as their bible...

Tina, your comments about these dreadful judges is right on! OMG, what mental institution for the criminally insane discharged them and why are they on this show??? From the looks of it, they just wondered in, just like some of the other players...
I actually enjoy the parts of the show until the judges start with their extreme snarkiness. It's too much!
Give me Tim Gunn's unapproving look (with his hand on his chin) and that wordless disapproving gaze any day! These LML bitches are totally insufferable!!!

Vanessa's looked like something straight out of The Brady Bunch Variety Hour. ACK!

I remain Team Merle all the way, I don't get how she didn't win. Also, I don't understand why no judges called the tentacle kimono, tentacles aside, out on having NO ORANGE in it. That was part of the challenge, yes? Don't people get eliminated over stuff like that? (Or was that just the reason to get rid of Dave in the first season of Top Chef to send that bitch girl to the finale?)

I agree, they were robbed.

But what I couldn't get over was that this show seems so based on the 'professionals' rather than the 'designers'. I mean how could anyone succeed with that idiot dandy as their 'professional'. I know it is a 'reality' show therefor fairness is not the required but I like to atleast pretend that the best is moving forward.

For those claiming the kimono didn't have orange: The accent color at the neckline and the kimono sash are the "orange" color that jewelery chick drew from the stack of fabric. It doesn't look quite orange on screen, but she did fulfull the challenge reqs.

Oh you do make me miss cable!

I do like Merle's a lot and maybe I am mistaken, but didn't the "prototype" drawing from the trend board look a little like it?

??

But it was lovely, and well made and so much let drama.

I really do not like the "red" and turquoise of the kimono.

And speaking of the kimono, that judge on the left, made a remark about kimono's being all wrong.

But Marilyn's (dang still hard to keep track of the names - CEOprah)was also basically a kimono.

bitchybitchybitchy

those tentacles were a no-go, that's for sure.

Agree that Merle and Thai are the ones to watch....

Loved Merle from the start. Her first piece wowed me like crazy. I didn't mind the sleeves in this piece, and I even though I'm not a fan of the colour, I like the design a lot. So yes, I agree-- ROBBED.

And also, I agree that she's the one to look out for during this show. I like her tons.

Thank you once again. I thought the kimono was unfairly criticized. Ok, the tentacles...yeah, whatever. Otherwise, I loved it.

I did like Vanessa's pants (and not just saying that because our parents have great taste in first names.) Not the craft project aspect but I liked the cut and fit. Merle naturally was robbed yet again. Maybe they are trying not to make her win too obvious?

LET ME JUST START OF BY SAYING THAT THIS SHOW IS A TOTAL JOKE NONE OF THE JUDGES SEEM TO KNOW A THING ABOUT REAL FASHION ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY KEEP PUTTING PEOPLE LIKE LOUANNA AHEAD OF EVERYONE ELSE PLEASE THIS LADYS THE MOST BORING WOULD NOT EVEN CALL HER A DESIGNER ON THIS SHOW. PLUS SHE SEEMS LIKE A TOTAL [expletive deleted] PARDON MY FRENCH. AND FRANKLY THATS A TOTAL PUT OFF FOR THE SHOW.
AS FOR THAT HORRIBLE JUDGE LISA KLINE THAT DOESNT EVEN KNOW HOW TO DRESS HERSELF. SHOULD NOT FOR ANY REASON BE JUDGING OR CRITICIZING ANYBODY'S FASHION SENSE. PLEASE IF U BLOGGERS HAVE A CHANCE TO SEE WHAT SHE WORE ON THE DAY OF THE PREMIERE SERIOUSLY SHE LOOKED LIKE IF SHE WAS GOING TO HER NIGHT JOB AT THE STRIP CLUB UGHH... SO DISGUSTING.

OH AND THAT ERIC GUY CLEARLY U CAN TELL HE DOES NOTHING AND THAT GALINA LADY IS ONLY TRYING TO ADD TO HER OWN COLLECTION.

AS FOR THE UPSIDE OF THE SHOW I REALLY ENJOY WATCHING KATHY AND HER DESIGNS I LOVED THE KIMONO SHE CREATED THIS PAST SHOW.

ALTHOUGH I REALLY LIKE PATRICK I THINK HES BEEN CREATING DESIGNS THAT FRANKLY SEEM TO SAFE AND I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO SEE HIM MAKE SOMETHING MORE "DANDY"

AND AS FOR VANESSA I THINK THE JUDGES AND THE BLOGGERS ARE REALLY BEING TO HARSH ON HER THE JUMPSUIT WASNT THE BEST THING IN THE WORLD BUT IT REALLY GAVE THE SHOW A FRESH TWIST AS FOR THE HIGH WAISTED PANTS AND PEEK-A-BOO BLOUSE THAT SHE CREATED I TRULY THOUGHT THEY WERE AMAZING AND WAS INCREDIBLY SHOCKED WHEN SHE WAS ONCE AGAIN IN THE BOTTOM THREE. VANESSA SEEMS TO BE THE ONLY DESIGNER TAKING TRUE RISKS. I CANT WAIT TO SEE WHAT SHE COMES UP WITH NEXT.

I liked Merle's dress. That should have won. Regardless of the style itself, it was well done and flattering.

I also liked the colors on Kathy's. And bless the twins, after saying they wouldn't give advice they still tried to give a few gentle warnings, tentacles included.

Peg Bundy was robbed! Robbed,I tell you!

Seriously though, I think Merle has this wrapped up.

I love this show! I definitely think Merle should have won, but Eric's piece was pretty. Why don't I hear and see more about this show? Why aren't people talking about it? I adore the fact it's ready to wear!

Pretty in Pink

Yes Marty! I totally agree with you. I havebeen looking thru the other blogs and not alot of people weem to know about this wonderful amusing litlle show. Maybe evryone is X-mas shopping.
But some of the designs are quite beautiful!
I love this show it has a new edge!
Love Merle and Thai, they may win, and Patrick and Roberto.

Ms. Native Rose and Emil have been quite creative as well.

Who dosen't love fashion shows!!
