Jennifer Garner in W Magazine

W Magazine January 2010
Photographed by Craig McDean
Styled by Lori Goldstein
Hair by Orlando Pita

Makeup by Gucci Westman

We were always kind of ambivalent about Ms. Garner. Pretty enough, but nothing special and almost completely devoid of any charisma whatsoever. Never saw a performance of hers that ever stuck in our minds, either. If it weren't for the Mrs. Affleck thing, she'd be completely forgettable.

Having said that, we like this editorial, for the most part. We're not super-crazy about the cover, which almost looks like they took her picture before she was ready. The rest of the pictures look great. She should wear that Egyptian-style eyeliner more often because it completely transforms her from pretty girl to sultry siren - and it's not a look that most can pull off without looking trashy (e.g., Amy Winehouse, although that could be due to the fact that Amy's already pretty trashy).

Love all the clothes (with the exception of the Lanvin off-the-shoulder jumpsuit), although we have to say, she's kind of over-accessorized, even for an editorial.

I think the makeup here was all wrong for her. Aside from the cover, her eyes just look odd.

This doesn't happen often, but I completely disagree on both points. I think she's a lovely breathe of fresh air, and I hate the eyeliner.
so there....heh-heh

yaaaaaaaaaawn. I mean she's pretty but I don't really think she can model and the shoot is nothing special. Though that last Chanel dress is adorable.

Oh and this might sound odd but does anyone else just think her lips look SO chapped? She looks like she's been licking her lips and standing in an arctic wind for a few hours.

ACK - the jumpsuit - who doesn't want to look wide chest to ankles?

That dress - is the back supposed to be totally exposed like that?

Just ridiculous

I've always liked her, and I love the eyeliner. Great layout.

Nothing can help the so-fucking-boringness that is Jennifer Garner. And since Ben Affleck is just as boring and forgettable, her being the Mrs does um exactly nothing.
Bleh pics too. Next.

@Anon 12:56 - Where is there an exposed back?

@Anon 12:56 - Where is there an exposed back?

Well, I've always liked her. She was adorable in 13 Going On 30...probably NOT a TLo kind of film!

But she doesn't even look like herself here, not at all, in my opinion. Nice clothes though.

Omg TLo, are you serious?! You should check out ALIAS, brought to you by JJ Abrams. It fell off later, but she was definitely memorable in that show - and rocked some cool (and also funny) looks and makeup in it, too. :)

Love these pics!

I like the eye make up a lot!!! Thought the clothes looked fab and the whole shoot worked.

Amen

Remember this season on the Rachel Zoe project when Taylor was getting her ready for a photo shoot and then realized it was a beauty shoot so they didn't need that many clothes. Do we think this was it since two of the pictures are close up? Love the orange Dior, but I agree that she doesn't look ready for the picture.

For a second there, I thought the last picture was of the model from PR season 6 (Erica Milde)

You're probably right. I love the Dior. Great editorial!

Love the white sweater dress. How'd they get the skirt to stand out like that for the photo?

love the eyeliner. (actually i always love liner.)
and she did better poses in the shoot than i thought she might.

This is probably the most interesting she's ever looked. But should the cover shot be the worst out of the bunch? It's very... odd looking.

HAMMERTIME!

lol, seriously the jumpsuit is just fug on both Jennifer and the model.

I do like the liquid liner, gives her a retro glam look which I like much better than her girl next door look, but I've never been a big fan of hers either. I hate the cover pic. The dress looks too stiff and her eyes look dead.

I think she's very charming, in general, but the impression that I've gotten of her from Zoe and elsewhere makes me surprised that she'd even do this shot. She doesn't seem all that interested in the high-maintenance glam. She's very down to earth. I'm not sure I'd recognize her in some of these pictures.

C'est moi, c'est moi Lola

"Pretty enough, but nothing special and almost completely devoid of any charisma whatsoever. Never saw a performance of hers that ever stuck in our minds, either."

Exactly. I watched 1 episode of Alias upon a friend's recommendation, and decided, "This is bullshit - I miss Diana Rigg as Mrs. Peel."

As for the shoot, who knew a little eyeliner could make that much difference? I thought she resembled Christine Keeler of the Profumo Scandal. Now, if Mrs. Affleck could channel that into her roles, she might be a more interesting actress....

If they were trying to make Jen Garner look like someone else, mission accomplished. I would never have recognized her.

And you're right about her being over-acccessorized. Rachel Zoe loves the "too much" boho look when it comes to jewelry, but it overpowers most people, including here.

"Tlo said: We're not super-crazy about the cover, which almost looks like they took her picture before she was ready."

I agree. That's a very weak cover photo. But then, all the pictures look pretty devoid of emotion, like she just wasn't into it. I don't know if it's her of the photographer. But then, given the Photoshop-itis pandemic, I'm wondering if they didn't just Photoshop the expression right off her face.

I like Jennifer Garner, but mostly for her personal life. I think she is a pretty great mom and she seems really laid back and mellow. Your right about her acting, nothing really memorable. I also must admit...I never thought that she was a great beauty. She looks great in this editorial, I love the clothes, but it seems a bit boring (perhaps like Jennifer herself). The cover shot looks very catalogue. And the accessories! It looks like she was styled by Frau Seal.

C'est moi, c'est moi Lola said: "I miss Diana Rigg as Mrs. Peel."

Oh! Thud!

If SHE showed up in Diva Death Match or Virgins/Vixins, I wouldn't care who she was up against. Hmm... except Audrey, in which case having to choose would be like having Steed's umbrella stiletto go straight through my heart.

Not buying it. Sorry, they can dress Ms. Garner up with all the sauces and spices they want, but she still tastes like plain baked potato.

Tlo said: We're not super-crazy about the cover, which almost looks like they took her picture before she was ready.

I predict she won't make it past the first round of Make Me a Supermodel!

In all cases, she looks better than the model. She's boring as oatmeal, but she looks unbelievably stellar. Maybe she should be a model, not an actress.

I agree with honesty, I like her for personal life. She seems very down to earth and doesn't dress her kids up like expensive dolls. But as far as actress, meh. Cute but sort of forgettable. I don't like the cover pic much at all.

I agree -- it doesn't look like her, but I like the pictures -- the eye makeup and hair is channeling Rachelle Welch. C'mon, that pantsuit rocks! Tho it's totally Alexis Carrington-Colby!

Something I've been paying attention to ever since a breakdown of a Lindsay Lohan editorial here, is whether or not the celebrity "models" look at the camera -- I think the assessment of Lindsay was that she doesn't really get editorial modeling -- that it's about the whole picture as opposed to being *a picture of her.* Anwyay, that's not really an assessment of this editorial, just that now it's something I can't help but notice! And here, Jennifer is definitely working the clothes, not posing for the paparazzi.

The cover REALLY does not look like her at all. I wouldn't have known it was her, or anyone famous, which seems bad for sales.

I was a big Alias back in the day, so Jennifer Garner will always win in my book. I also admire the way she carries herself off-screen. She may not be tabloid glamorous but her kids look like real kids, and she seems to relish being a parent. I also think she looks pretty in this editorial, so IN all around, (conceding your point about her odd pose on the cover).

Anon:Not buying it. Sorry, they can dress Ms. Garner up with all the sauces and spices they want, but she still tastes like plain baked potato.

Totally agree. Personally I think the eyeliner is too much for her face. It overwhelms her simplicity.

i think she is adorable! love the photos.

While Garner isn't the most exciting actress, I always find her very charming both on screen and in interviews. Plus, the first two seasons of Alias KICKED ASS and she was definitely a part of that. Even the later seasons were fun if they meandered a bit. These pics are great though - thanks for sharing them.

Does she have a new movie coming out? Why is she even in W magazine?

TLo! Have you checked out 'Alias'?

Could be wrong, but I believe it's SO right up your alley: action, fashion, design, aesthetics, and crazy character-driven plot twists all in one!

Give the girl a break! She seems to me so refreshingly normal. One can only take so much Madonna, Janice, Lady Gaga, JLo, Angelina, Lindsey and Brittany before choking.

TampaBay

My first thought is that there is a "trying to be Angelina Jolie" vibe to the whole thing ... the eyeliner, but also the posing ... especially the close-up wehre hair obscures half of her face.

i'm actually quite impressed, in the cover shot she looks a little bit like margherita missoni....

Never was a big Alias fan. I watched part of season 1 and thought as far as modern day spies go LA FEMME NIKITA with Peta Wilson was far superior and before that The Avengers with Diana Rigg.

Can't say i'm a huge fan of Mrs Affleck, but Tlo, she was pretty fab in 13 going on 30 and those Alias shows had lots of fashion.

I like the pic's.

Victoria
12/15/09 1:04 PM @Anon 12:56 - Where is there an exposed back?

The way the back of that skirt (the Chanel) in the last outfit lifts up in the back at that odd angle - that looks like a very stiff skirt and her leaning forward...except she does not appear to be leaning that far forward....

It looks like her whole backside would be exposed.

THANK YOU, TLo! Everyone I know thinks she's the freaking bomb, but I'm like, she's just another pretty girl with no sex appeal whatsoever.

I agree about the eyeliner. It works for her. The clothes are ok, but I don't think she's a very good model. She doesn't jump off the page.

Completely unspectacular, just like her.

I agree on the eyeliner! Jennifer Garner bores the hell out of me!

As a huge Jennifer Garner fan I automatically love these. I like the wavy big hair and makeup and the clothes too. I even like the jumpsuit and I normally hate them, she brings a certain strong masculinity to it which I think jumpsuits need. I agree there are too many accessories and I think the cover doesn't relate to the interior photos at all--weird.

Also, he may be more "famous" but honeys: Jennifer > Ben

I love that Chanel on her. She's lovely.

yeah! ho! wah!

i think she looks great in the chanel. the rest is rather bland.

as for garner, she might not have charisma, exactly, but she certainly has personality, that personality being "hyper". it can be granting, but it worked quite well in juno and alias was a blast in its earlier seasons.

She bores me and so does this editorial.

The last dress is adorable, though.

I like her- and I think the eyeliner is fab. Who knew it would look so transformative? That being said, OY on that jumpsuit, although I think it would at least look better-proportioned with a sleek black boot.

Wow! A new side of Jennifer Garner! If I'd been asked to identify her from that tight face shot, I wouldn't have been able to do so.

I think she looks GORGEOUS in that Chanel dress.

I love all of these pics of her. Those close up shots look like old 60s glam shots. Love it.

Straight guys LOVE her. Ask one.

The eye makeup does make her look more glamorous. But it also ages her a bit.

She was fantastic in Juno. In fact, I think she was sadly overlooked during awards season that year.

All things considered...girl rocked it.

All things considered...girl rocked it.

Oh, man. I LOVE, I mean LOVE Jen Garner in Alias. One of my most watched DVD series. So, for me, she is always My Alias Gal before Mrs. Affleck.

Anyway, I think the editorial is beautiful. I love the make-up. And I love all of the accessories (says the woman typing with 5 bracelets and 3 rings).

She looks like Eliza Dushku in a lot of these shots. Kind of weird...

This looks is a little forced on her.

I thought she was fantastic in Juno.

I agree, pepper, she was fantastic in Juno - an "un-flashy" multi-layered performance.

To each his own, I guess....

5&10

When I grabbed the magazine out of my mail box I wondered why the hell is W using a "regular" woman on the cover and then realized who it was and wondered yet again why anyone finds her interesting.

I got my issue of W in the mail yesterday and had to do a
double-take. Couldn't believe that was Jennifer Garner. I think she looks pretty amazing and the Dior is tdf. The spread isn't super memorable, but I do like her make-up. The eyeliner treatment gives her a very mod '60's era look. I agree, did not love the way the black, polyester Lanvin jumpsuit was styled. It looked way too over-accessorized and the angle of the shot made Jennifer's figure look grossly disproportionate.

Overall, a great issue of W to start off 2010. I absolutely loved the "Run of the Show" spring fashions preview spread --- fabulous and a veritable feast for the eyes!

- edina -

ok, I think the Lanvin shot is the most interesting photo of Jennifer Garner I've ever seen. Yes, it is overstyled, for sure. But the angles she creates are so new for her and they actually don't bore me like she usually does.

As for the jumpsuit itself, in spite of its wide silhouette, it looks incredibly cozy and being so thin and not tall, Jen actually looks taller in the suit.

Doesn't anybody else see Bianca Jagger in studio 54 when they see the Lanvin?

Loved her in Alias and Juno. I think she looks great here.

I ADORE her eyeliner here. But then again, that's how I normally line my eyes, so perhaps I'm a wee bit biased...

I enjoyed 13 Going on 30 because I'm shameless.

The best I can say about her is that her 3/4 profile looks vaguely like Robin Wright Penn.

Ms Bristow can do no wrong. I adore you boys, but on this point you are incorrect.

I think she's beautiful, but the cover is too airbrushed. She looks so thin and not herself at all. One of the best things about her is her gorgeous figure.

It's interesting to see JG in a different light, but really, it doesn't suit her. Her fresh-faced beauty is her real appeal.

Agree with BK.

Loved her in Juno; liked Alias but really wouldn't you say it was more costumes than fashion?

Love the photos except the cover. It's strange, because the cover is the only photo where she looks recognizable, but it's not a flattering photo. She'd be a different person if she wore that eyeliner every day, but it looks great in this shoot!

Also, with those poses and that makeup, doesn't it seem like they were trying to make her face look like Sophia Loren?

Vegan I totally agree on the Sophia Loren vibe there... in the second close-up.
I hope I don't get pummeled :-S

I agree with mimi. I think Jen Garner fully embodies the girl next door. She's cute, sweet, charming, funny...have you ever seen her being interviewed? Every girl wants to be her bff! I think she looks great in the last shot but it's totally not her thing with the makeup and this style of clothing.

Overaccesorized and overphotoshopized. They took great care to hide her ears. I don't find the photos that special and agree with those who note they are devoid of her one charm, being a quintaessential girl next door. She is very good at that, she can't pull this one off.

The pilot of Alias is one of the most amazing episodes of television ever. She's simultaneously so many different types...the red hair and goth fierceness in that episode are forever burned in my mind. I'll admit that nothing since then has topped it...but she is so not forgettable. I heart her.
