In a way, it's a little frustrating designating ourselves cheerleaders for this show. We're not completely ignorant of the flaws so far, but we like the show in spite of them and because we see a tremendous amount of potential in the concept. There was a hint of a germ of an idea in the pilot when political buzzwords like the deliberately familiar "hope and change" as well as the anvil-heavy "universal healthcare" were tossed around. A lot of people jumped on
that and assumed that the show was somehow an anti-Obama tract dressed up as a science fiction show but we think it goes a bit further than that. We touched on this when we wrote about the pilot, but we want to revisit it for a second here to explain why we see such potential. The original V debuted in the early '80s and we suppose someone could make the argument that it was somehow a response to Reaganism but frankly we think that's a stretch. Anyone with a base understanding of recent history knows that the differences both political and cultural between 2009 and 1983 are vast and we think the show is attempting to play off of that. We live in hyper-politicized times and for all the talk of cold war-era fears being reflected in the television shows and movies of the time, our art has only really tangentially touched on post 9/11 fears, even though we'd argue as people who lived through both periods, the fear of nuclear annihilation was no greater than the current 21st century American fears of terrorism, immigration, economic collapse and environmental degradation. In addition to those fears weighing down on us, we are stuck in the grips of a two-decade long "culture war" that shows no signs of letting up. This is why we think the show has such potential: because it can easily play off of the post-millenial hysteria and use it to give the story more
layers and more meaning.Unfortunately, it's just not quite there yet. We have reason to hope, however. Production on the show was halted after only 4 episodes were completed and the showrunner was replaced. There's a retooling going on at the moment and we hope very much that it happened because someone involved with the show saw the potential that we see. Because of that, these first four episodes have the feel of a prolonged prelude. It's when the show returns in March that we'll really see if the creators involved get what they have on their hands.
Part of what frustrates us about the show is that very few of the characters have any, well...character to them. With the exception of Anna and her daughter (!!!!) Lisa, the rest of the characters have a stock feel to them. Further, the show has no style to it. Everything is shot and art directed in as bland a "network television" style as possible. Take away the aliens and it could easily pass
for any basic police procedural on television. In particular, the show suffers terribly from a "Canada passing for New York" aesthetic that sets our teeth on edge.Another thing that irritates us is that the show doesn't quite have the courage to "go there," to use a phrase. When Ryan had the gun to Cyrus' head last night, we were shouting "Kill him!" Not because we're bloodthirsty but because if you're going to do a story about the potential annihilation of the human race by alien invaders, then you need to take the tension to that level. The literal fate of the world is at stake and everyone who knows that seems to be pussyfooting around quite a bit. It may seem unfair to compare this show to Lost but to our way of thinking, it's unavoidable. Both shows have large ensemble casts and a sci-fi-influenced plotline. The difference is, Lost was never afraid to go there and as the seasons went by, the body count went up and up as the stakes got higher and higher. We need to see that level of intensity here. We need to feel like the stakes really are that high.
None of this is to say that we don't enjoy the show. We do. Immensely. And in fact, we think last night's episode was the strongest yet as multiple plot strands were introduced and existing plot strands moved forward slightly. The creators need to realize what a gold mine they have in Morena Baccarin as Anna. Almost every other actor on the show appears to be struggling a bit to find their character and she alone gives off the impression that she knows her character inside
and out. Sure, we love her because she's fabulous and wears fierce clothes, but we also love her because she inhabits the skin of that character (no pun intended) 100%. She's both fabulous and creepy as hell and that's not an easy trick to pull off, especially when you're not dealing with the strongest of scripts. Laura Vandervoort as teen slut V Lisa deserves some credit too. It's funny. We didn't see the "Mother" line coming at all but just before that we were discussing that she was just as fabulous and as coolly creepy as the Anna character is. Now we know why.Elizabeth Mitchell still seems to be struggling a bit in her role. She needs to be bumped up a bit in the scripts in order to go toe to toe with Anna's character because whether they intended it or not, she is Anna's counterpart in the resistance. This is further illustrated by the fact that her child is about to sleep with Anna's child and if it's anything like the original series, that will result in a hybrid baby, which means both of them will be grandmothers to the same child. Right now, she's a generic TV series FBI agent.
We actually like the work they're doing with Father Jack, who is a bit of a moron when it comes to the spy work he's taken on, but that only makes sense for the character. If he had inexplicably become "Father Jack, Action Priest" overnight, we would have been rolling our eyes. We're glad they finally got the four main characters of the resistance together. We think that took a little long, actually. They shoved so much information at us in the pilot that we assumed every episode was going to move that quickly.
But we're being a little unfair here because like we said, a LOT happened last night. Along with getting the resis
tance up on its feet, we were treated to several intriguing twists. Number one would be the revelation that Anna is Lisa's mother. Never saw that coming. Also never saw coming the revelation that apparently, there are Fifth Columnists on board the motherships. Is Dale dead? It would make no sense for him not to be, but that's kind of a shame. He had the makings of a great villain. Also, what did Cyrus mean when he talked about being "reconnected" and "the bliss?" And who are the other sleeper agents in the FBI office that Dale mentioned? And how did Ryan seemingly reduce Cyrus into a pile of ash? And how many sleeper agents need to turn on Ryan before he realizes he can't trust the guys? Most importantly of all, who the hell is John May?It kind of sucks that there's only one episode left before they go on hiatus, but we have to admit, much as we love it, we realize it needs the time to iron out the kinks. Until then, we are of peace. Always.

I think both versions have elements regarding the less-than-critical acceptance of people telling us what we want to hear.

i think last nights show was the best so far. just when it gets interesting a very long break is coming which is to bad. i am in for the long haul & i hope they keep the story interesting.
11/18/09, 3:56 PM
Yeah, the show isn't as "OMG WTF just happened?!" as Lost or Mad Men, but I'm willing to stick with the show unless the writers do something really stupid. As a note, I like V better than 'The Prisoner' re-do. (Love Ian McKellen, but Jim Ca-weasel is like fingernails down a chalkboard for me.)
The whole mother/daughter thing WAS a nice surprise, and I liked the 'big brother' aspect of the jackets that transmit video.
Father Jack IS a big dummy when it comes to covert meetings, and I was a little less forgiving of that than you two were. A wackadoodle that warrants an FBI file and he visits with the priest get-up and business cards! Anyway, the 'Father Jack Action Hero' comment made me smile.
Well, we'll see how many more questions get answered before the hiatus.
Thanks guys!

I'm glad there was more Anna in last night's episode then last week's. I was a bit surprised at the whole "mother" thing too. It's just going to be really upsetting that next week's episode will be the last for a long time :(
Definitely the best episode so far.
11/18/09, 4:22 PM
Didnt watch this weeks yet, more a comment from prev episodes. I'm sick of the 'pussy teenage dude' role...(see also "Weeds" and "Nip Tuck") We get it...teen boys can be talked into anything by a hot chick. Yawn. Next they'll have a 'hooker with the heart of gold' and 'drunk and/or drug addict that redeems himself".
11/18/09, 4:50 PM
Best episode yet, and I'm so happy that the 5th Column is on the ships, where it belongs. Deserters, like the lizards on earth, are completely different from a real 5th Column, which works invisibly from within to take the organization down.
Of course, the leader of the column from the original was one of my favorite characters, so I'm likely a little biased in favor of them. Enough to forgive them for killing Wash (who had to die anyway, otherwise how no save the leading lady from being a lizard snack?).
I do think that the name "John May" is a bad choice, though. "John May Lives!" looks like a grammar mistake. John might live? John definitely lives? John may be dead, we're not sure?
11/18/09, 5:14 PM
I agree last nights show was the best so far. Anna's practicing her sympathetic speech to the widow was truly a creepy moment. There's something about that smile of hers that gives me the chills. Someone on another board pointed out that while her mouth is smiling, her eyes are cold and distant, which perfectly sums up why she's so unsettling.
Love Father Jack & why does every show need to have a hero named "Jack". Think about it. "Lost", "24", "Eureka"....I'm sure there's more.
11/18/09, 5:15 PM
Well, I have my doubts that there is going to be any shots of grandmothers both smiling down at the baby/lizard, then at each other. It is more likely that Anna will eat Erica and barf her up for the little spawn.
I am mesmerized and at the same time creeped out by Anna. Great casting job !
I too am pretty bored with teenage boys thinking with the southern head, but, the truth is the truth, after all.
Can't wait for the next episode and I am already frustrated at having to wait until MARCH !!
Sewhat?

I love the revelation that there are covert Fifth Column people on board the ship. That shows that they're far more powerful than I'd thought. I had imagined that being "connected" was sort of like being part of the Matrix, and joining the Fifth Column excluded one of the Vs from that by default. Apparently not. Does Anna exert some kind of opium-like effect on all of her servants?
This show is toying with me by making Dale dead, then alive, then (seemingly) dead. You're right that he would make a great villain, and I'm happy that he came back for this episode, but it would be really bad for the Vs to know that Erica had killed, or attempted to kill, one of their own. She would be off the map immediately. All of the humans seem way too cavalier to me, including Erica.
And I'm sorry, but Erica's son Tyler? Dipshit. Seriously.
11/18/09, 5:18 PM
I think the fairest comparison for V isn't Lost, but Battlestar Galactica. Both are remakes of originals developed in 70s and 80s. Both originals introduced concepts of occupation and annihilation that were sanitized out of existence.
The BSG remake is so praised because it took the idea of life under threat of annihilation and played it up. The sad truth is that V has shown yet that the writers really understand occupation and resistance. It's possible that they will, but so long as they're afraid to kill people, it ain't happening.
11/18/09, 5:23 PM
Oh, and......don't walk into someone's house without their permission. Just don't. What were you thinking, Father Jack?
11/18/09, 5:31 PM
Totally saw the mother thing coming, haha. Nice ending by the way..
11/18/09, 5:48 PM
I am hanging on for the long run because I am a die hard sci-fi fan and the show has so much potential. I ran out and bought the New Star Trek yesterday DVD and didn't watch it so that I could watch V. The Star Trek movie succeeded where V is failing, it took characters we knew and gave us MORE of them.
V is all stock characters except the Anna and Lisa. That was precisely why that twist was so awesome, in one word we got more of each of them. The unexpected looks into Anna, her virtual wardrobe last week, her practicing her empathy this week are why her character is so compelling.
I'd like to see the priest and Scott Wolf's characters fleshed out more. Case in point, they are so bland I can't even remember their names right now.
Tonight it is Chris Pine and a glass of wine ;-)
11/18/09, 6:00 PM
I agree wholeheartedly, last night was the best episode so far and the visual style needs to be more unique.
Now that I've seen 3 episodes, I'm thrilled they shut down production to re-tool. I'm hoping the producers/studio/network saw the potential but lack of distinctive execution and will return in March with grandslam episodes. Bringing in a showrunner that has a background most recently on Chuck, gives me hope that it will be more exciting & fresh.
11/18/09, 6:21 PM
tlo, this time, i totally agree with your review. this series is overflowing with potential, but so far, has been frustratingly bland. the plot moves too slowly, the characters and dialoges are flat, the direction and designs are boring.
and i think i know exactly what you mean when you say that the series "doesn't quite have the courage to 'go there'". i was thinking exactly the same thing last episode when the v's were torturing that resistance guy with some lame snake halucinations. not that i enjoy torture in my entertainment, in fact i hate it, but some "real" torture would have made that scene so much more powerful. i just keep comparing it with battlestar galactica, where they barely pulled any punches, which made it a very dark series, but also a very powerful one.
11/18/09, 6:27 PM
I'm kinda digging the show and while the comparisons are inevitable, I'm not going to pretend the original was some grand work of high art and this is the bubble gum inferior.
I was out of town and missed last week, but watched last night anyway. As you guys have said there are kinks that need to be worked out and I hope the show does that.
As for the guy wanting to be "reconnected" and "blissed", in the original the Visitors had some humans that were kept in matrix like pod farm. Mike Donanvan's son was one of them. Perhaps this time around it is like the matrix where those connected live in a bliss free matrix world unaware of the horrors around them. Perhaps like the (Matrix) Joey Pants character that's what he wants to be reconnected to.
11/18/09, 6:28 PM
Also, I'm starting to feel really bad for Ryan, as much as he's a jerk for lying to his fiance. He keeps getting betrayed over and over again....and now finds that his best friend from the resistance has been steadily working to eliminate all of their (former) allies. Poor guy.
11/18/09, 7:29 PM
This show is a mega disappointment. The plots and characters are cliched and wooden. I see no freshness at all in the plots...only in the special effects and in the realization of what it's like in the V world. The standard-issue scripts don't give me much hope that things are going to improve. Hugely missed opportunity.
11/18/09, 7:29 PM
So when are they going to start eating hamsters?
I'm bored with this already--I saw the mommy reveal coming--but I question what that actually means emotionally in "reptilian" terms.
I like most of the performances well enough, but they need to ratchet up the philosophical ideas here.
11/18/09, 7:38 PM
I've yet to watch last night's episode, but I have to say I'm experiencing ennui over the choice to make Laura the mother of the V-child, given that a) we spend much more time with the humans than the Visitors, so Laura having a child isn't as immediate to us (if she indeed uses-and-loses Tyler, rather than staying in a romantic relationship with him) and b)having Tyler as the father eliminates some of the body horror of the original, at least for me.
11/18/09, 7:41 PM
I dunno how "reptilian" the Vs are. A lot of the 5th Column seem have have very human like relationships, and speak English even when alone.
Anna just seems a bit frigid, even with her own people, and I would not be surprised if Lisa eventually joined the 5th column.
I'm a little surprised by Dale's disgust of humans.
How can a visitor like Ryan be able to overlook a very real species-barrier while someone like Dale regards it as something akin to bestiality.
I'm also itching to see what they really look like. Their original look in the 80s series was kinda hokey. Maybe something less Sleestak and more like Mystique from X-men would be cool, but more alien looking?
11/18/09, 8:14 PM
I guess the episode ran over slightly so my DVR cut off (I hate it when that happens!). Was it at the very end that Lisa calls Anna "mother"? Can someone tell me what happened in that last little bit of the show?
11/18/09, 8:38 PM
@al --good point about the 'Vs' speaking English when alone. It would be more interesting if they scrambled the audio-visual context for us --and added subtitles so we'd get experience the sensation of displacement whenever the Visitors communicate amongst themselves. But then again the chances of that happening on primetime, on a major network are as iffy as actual aliens revealing themselves to be alien.
11/18/09, 9:35 PM
11/18/09, 10:51 PM
Okay, a couple of additional/tangential thoughts. First is that my husband, when I turned to him and said "Mother????" replied, "I wonder if Anna's the mother to all of them?" Hmmmm.....
Second, Steve the Pirate as alien psycho-revenge-spy killer is simply delicious.
So now we wait...
11/18/09, 11:31 PM
@memorexe Lost did the other language bit with Jin and Sun very successfully. I wish this show would take the risk.
11/19/09, 1:18 AM
That would involve creating a brand new language for Vs. It seems audience concession is the route they are taking when it comes to intra-V dialogue.
11/19/09, 8:18 AM
I love a good sci-fi show and I was excited about V, but I just didn't get into the first two episodes that much. This week's was wonderful though. I really liked the idea of the cameras in the jackets. I hope Dale isn't dead b/c I love that guy (he is a sci-fi standard...Firefly, Dollhouse). But a long break for a new show that is already bleeding out viewers (pilot was around 14 mil, this week was around 9) is not good...just ask Pushing Daisies and Samantha Who?
11/19/09, 10:47 AM
Well, as I suspected, we now see more importance in the teen storyline because the son will be the way that the V can get to Erica. Yes, there is some annoyance to the teen element, but it will become critical later.
The jacket as cameras thing was great - good thing Erica figure that one out since there is now one in her house.
I find it amusing that you want the tension raised to a high level but bemoan Dale being dead.

Killing off a villain with dangerous information doesn't raise the tension level; it lowers it.
11/19/09, 12:22 PM
I love Morena, but I really want Alan's character to come back-- but I think that's my Wash bias kicking in.
But I think Morena has a knack for playing fashionable characters with a hidden agenda, but serene exterior. That's basically what Inara from Firefly was, and her guest appearance on How I Met Your Mother was Ted's beautiful date that everyone tried to provoke into being crazy.
I really like Scott Wolf's portrayal, but what I wouldn't give for Nathan Fillian to play opposite of Morena again...
11/19/09, 1:06 PM
I think the shows reluctance to "go there" has more to do with its 8 o'clock time slot than anything else. You just can't do things at 8 that you can do at 9 or 10. It's just the way TV is. You can't blow someone's head-even a godless alien-at 8.

I really like the show, but not sure it's going to have staying power. Old Juliet from LOST is fantastic and Anna's captivating to watch. I think Juliet's (sorry can't think of character's name) son is miscast, too pretty boy maybe? just not quite right. And the priest should have been hotter, as you know down the road there will be a romantic story line in there. Some of the acting is meh.
You guys should give Flashforward a try, Charlie and Penny from LOST are on there, I like that one better, although neither is as good as LOST,Madmen, Breaking bad, etc.... come on Feb!
11/20/09, 3:17 PM
I don't really get how the images from the jacket cameras, which seem to just be some sort of thin material, can be perfectly in focus but the images from those hovering killer bots are completely out of focus. Makes no sense.
11/20/09, 6:25 PM
Are Lydia and Diana in this version?
11/21/09, 1:53 AM
Really great episode. As one said up thread, this is the best so far. At the end, when the FBI woman and the rest of resistance crew were finally getting together, I clapped. And the reveal of the resistance within V and Anna and Lisa's relationship both surprised me.
Looking forward to next week's episode.
11/21/09, 4:24 PM
The weak storytelling and cardboard characters are too much. Feels like any police/law office/medical drama on commercial television, thus reinforcing why I stopped watching the Big 4 networks. At least Battlestar Galactica had the guys to show Number Six snap the newborn's neck to show the audience they meant business. I give any new show 3 episodes and have to say I'm done - Anna alone can't keep me.
11/24/09, 5:57 PM
John May was the man who was the head of the fifth column resistance. It was mentioned earlier in the episode by Ryan.
11/25/09, 2:55 AM
"And how many sleeper agents need to turn on Ryan before he realizes he can't trust the guys?"
MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY. I mean, really, I can see father Jack being sort of naive, but you'd think Ryan would know better.
