Shimmering Shelley O

Labels:
Shelley! It's been a while.

President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama hosted their first State Dinner for Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his wife Gursharan Kaur of India.

Michelle Obama wore a one-of-a-kind gown designed by Indian-born designer Naeem Khan.

Knocked that one out of the park, wouldn't you say? It's a gorgeous dress and the big earrings and bangles really set it off. Love the hair, but not so in love with the makeup, which, curiously, doesn't look, shall we say, expertly applied. Visible lip liner is a big no. But that's really only noticeable in the closeups. Minor complaint though, because all eyes would only naturally be on that dress and rightfully so. She looks stunning.

Loving our First Lady.

Simply gorgeous

She absolutely ROCKED this look. The color looks great against her skin. Wish we could see shoes though.

Grand slam, I'd say. Fabulous.

Love it! She looked fabulous.

Love her more every day (him, too, but I know that's off topic). I do agree with TLo that the make-up is oddly lacking, though. Maybe she was in a rush?

Wow, Shelley. No wonder Rocky is smiling at you like that. Stunning is definitely the word. Gorgeous dress on a woman who wears it, rather than the other way around.

She looked gorgeous. As a DC resident, I hope you do an extended post on the other attendees. Pretty please?

Oh, and the jewelry is perfect.

You Boys are so observant: I knew something was just slightly off, neck up, but couldn't figure out what. Leave it to you to catch the VLL (visible lip liner)!

When I saw her this morning, I was hoping you would do a post so I could see more pictures! She looks amazing. I dare say a personal best. And I love that she used an Indian designer for the event. Great way to be respectful.

Stun-ning! I would have liked to see sleeker hair and lipstick with some color tho.

bitchybitchybitchy

Gorgeous-our First Lady absolutely rocked this gown!

BTW-the White House social secretary, Desiree Rogers, wore Comme Des Garcons to the dinner-would love to see your thoughts on her gown

TKO!!

and the bangles and earrings are to die! Go Shelley! She looks amazinh and I love her!!

GORGEOUS! She completely avoided the stuffy, typical first lady evening look.

As soon as I saw her on TV last night I knew there'd be a post this morning! That dress is gorgeous and I love the earrings. She looks great.

Proof that the wide belt thing does not work! She looks so much better in elegant lines like this.

Hands-down, that's the best I have ever seen her look. INcredible! The color, the styling, all of it are simply fab.

Saw a photo of her in today's paper and knew you guys would feature her. Lovely, lovely, lovely. And no cardigan.

Just two words: STUN. NING.

Just stunning.

--GothamTomato

HOTHOTHOT! I love her. Barack is no slouch either. Just gorgeously elegant.

She looks so tall, so sleek, LOVE IT!!!!

Oh my god to die.

Is she super tall or is that lady super short?

GORGEOUS!

Breathtaking!!! Thank you so much for posting this!!!

Superb. She is so beautiful. I also love that she wore a gown designed by an India born designer.

That is one good looking woman. And man. Wowza.

TVKimmey,
Cute new avatar. You'll have to alternate that one with your Bitter Kittens!

Absolutely gorgeous!!! The dress moved beautifully, as seen in the videos. I was so overcome by the beauty of Shelley O's gown, accessories, fabulous skin, that I didn't even notice any faulty makeup!!!! And, I really loved the hairstyle.
I would love to see what Dr. Biden wore, too, but can't seem to find any pics.

I was so proud to see this. Just gorgeous.

Darn---I would have loved to have seen her in this dress, "live." Love the bangles and earrings. She makes interesting choices. I hope that someday there's an exhibition of her wardrobe (either FIT or perhaps the National Museum of Women... in DC, etc.). I really think that it would be an interesting collection to behold.

I hate to dissent, but don't you think her bust looks tortured?

She looked amazing, they both turned it out!

Isn't she lovely? Yes, indeed!

srq

She looks amazing, and Barry looks at her like she looks amazing. I love the First Couple.

Perfect!

And not a cardi or belt in sight.

Suz

Just joining in on the chorus of Stunnings :)

Fantastic. That hair is great. I love that she's got a touch of amazoness about her. Naeem Khan has some other pieces that look pretty excellent too.

That's one beautiful and confident woman! They both look great. Thanks for the photos.

Her chest looks squished!!! The top of her breasts are spilling out over the dress. NOT stunning at all.

now there is the fabulous first lady we all loved. give your gays and that the designer of that dress a tip will you?

She is just breathtaking in that dress. The President wants to just eat her up, you can tell! I love that they're so crazy about each other.

There is some comedy to be found in the height difference, though, huh? Michelle looks like the fifty-foot woman.

The most attractive and sweet couple to ever hold a Presidential position.

Love them both!

And it is so obvious how much they love each other too...

Thanks for giving me something else to smile about today. :-)

~L

The dress is beautiful, but the fit in the bust is too tight. And Shelley still hunches her shoulders, which never looks good. I always want to tell her to stand up straight!

These are quibbles though -- overall it's a beautiful look.

Please do some of the other dresses that were there! I've been looking all over for more pictures of the guests.

Good lord! They are fabulous looking giants!

So lovely! I do think that the article over at msnbc was shockingly out-of-touch in that the reporter used the term "flesh colored" to describe the dress. Flesh colored? Really?!

I love the whole play on the sari, bangles and jewelry which Indian women wear that this look plays with. It's truly beautiful! She does look lovely, but I'm not grooving on the hair, a little too mullet-y for me. But the dress and overall look more than makes up for it.

Susan

Thank you, Tlo! I knew you guys would have a post and fabulous pictures of her dress. She looks gorgeous!

Gorgeous!

I agree that the fit in the bust could have been a teeny bit better... but on the other hand, it's better to have the dress be a bit too tight than to risk a State Wardrobe Malfunction. We wouldn't want to see photos of Shelley O yanking her dress up, would we?

Altogether, she looks fabulous, and she's done a great job of showing respect for Indian culture without turning into a parody.

Well thank you very much! lol The Bitter Kittens turned out better, but I'm wearing my optimistic hat for the holidays. ;)

Your right. He looks fab himself and he wears happy very well. I do love that you can see how much they love each other. It's refreshingly* human and sincere.

*compared to previous first couples, not compared to themselves.....

This is INCREDIBLY figure flattering. It's like she lost her hips and thighs from the last photo op. The shawl is also very strategically placed. I hope she uses this silhouette more often somehow in her day looks (meaning the shape and fit, not the off the shoulder glittery look) because this is infinitely better than any cinched belt over flouncy skirt and cardigan.

Pam

So tell us, does the First Lady choose all her clothes, or does she have a stylist?

Ab. Solutely. Stunning.

I also love that she managed to give a nice nod to the culture of her guests without looking remotely costumey.

Anon. "I do think that the article over at msnbc was shockingly out-of-touch in that the reporter used the term 'flesh colored' to describe the dress. Flesh colored? Really?!"

Oy! It looks exactly the color Crayola used to call Flesh. Crayola got smart enough to change it --FORTY SEVEN YEARS AGO! One would hope that a reporter for MSNBC would have caught up to a crayon company, but apparently not. Sigh.

She looks fabulous, and am glad to also hear that the formerly stodgy entertaining at the White House is being brought into the 21st century.

It's pretty and an extremely flattering silhouette, but I think I might have loved it that much more if it were in an actual color and had a bit more ease in the bust. Looks a tad uncomfortable as is, no? Esp. when compared to that fab black strapless gown she wore with the pile of pearl necklaces. And I speak as a similarly broad-shouldered female who encounteres similar fit issues with this particular dress shape, so I do know it takes quite a bit of tailoring!

I don't like her at all but even I must say that she looked absolutely incredible. As others have noted she really gave a nod to Indian culture with the jewelry, the style of the dress and by using an Indian designer without making it silly or a costume. Exceedingly well done, Shelly!

The bust does look a bit tortured and the hair and makeup aren't ideal but overall a knockout.

I also love her hair--very sculptural, which sets off the dress.

It's an interesting color. It looks peach close up and creamy yellow from far away. That along with her amber earrings... it all looks so heavenly.

I would not describe it as "flesh colored" however...unless we're talking about an unfortunate caucasian in the end stages of liver failure.

looks like barak has washed that gray right out of his hair!

In my next life, I would like to look like Michelle Obama. I'd love to have her intelligence, poise, and grace too, but you can't have everything, so I'll take the looks, please!

One more STUNNING! to add to the chorus. She hit just the right note for this event.

She looks phenomenal. Absolutely gorgeous, even if I hate the hair.

I extremely strongly dislike her - BUT I have to admit she looks fab here (other than an TLo wrote, the VLL).

See folks who've been attacking Irina and her win - you can do both.

I believe it has been reported that Michelle Obama is 6' tall.

She looks so gorgeous. They are indeed superhumanly beautiful (and amazing human beings). LOVE THEM!

My understanding is that the press release on the dress referred to the color as "nude". MSNBC probably thought it more couth to say "flesh-colored".

so beautiful and classy! and you can tell that they are so in love...

I SOOOO concur with all the stunning comments.
But I have to add I'm not wild on the hair.

Thanks for posting this one TLO. I think this is her best look yet.

They look so in love. Aint no fake sincerity there, I say.

Myra Flection

Gotta feel a little bit sorry for the Indian prime minister and his wife. They're lovely and dignified but its just hard to look really in charge when the first lady stands, literally, head and shoulders taller than your turban.

Love it! She looks beautiful, the dress is beautiful, and what a great smile!

When I saw the coverage on TV the first thing I thought was I can hardly wait until TLO post pictures so I can really see the dress! Absolutely Glam! Thank you!

Like others, I just KNEW this would be a hit with you guys. LOVE the look, wonder if she asked her stylist to add a belt :)

Radiant! And, you never really realize how tall the Obamas are until you see them next to regular-sized people.

Stunning!Just love her. But I think she is self-conscious about her middle. The wrap is beautiful, but I get the feeling she uses it to distract from her waistline. The same reason she always sticking a belt up there.

She looks beautiful. Her complexion is awesome in that dress! Gorgeous.

Isn't Barack Obama about 6'2"? And she is about the same height in high heels. Very striking couple!

They are so beauuuuuutiful! Love them!

Oh, the clothes. Yes! I like how her style is reminiscent of Indian style (bangles, form-fitting glitz, flowy scarf) without being a total knockoff. A sari and a bindi would have been embarrassing, but this is a graceful homage.

Did I mention that woman is beautiful? Those shoulders! That skin! That husband!

Anonymous @10:55, not only is it not the First Lady's "flesh color:" only sparkly vampires would match that gown; maybe the MSNBC reporter went to too many showings of "New Moon" this weekend?

I'm adding my voice to the chorus of pleas for more photos from this dinner, especially since the Secretary of State looked lovely from the waist up and I'd like to see the rest of the ensemble.

Mrs. Obama looked as close to perfect as it is possible for an actual human woman in her late forties. I wish the strapless thing would go away for a while, but she's rocking it.

Also, are there close-ups of those earrings anywhere? I'm interested in materials and construction and proveniance, and all I can see so far is a heavy pinkish blur.

Oh, and I think the subdued makeup against the glitzy, femme dress helps her look lean regal/political rather than party-girl.

I love how they often look like they're sharing jokes with each other... so intelligent and sweet and sly and awesome!

Asparagus lust

Sorry. Didn't like the dress or the shade. Looked like a Nicholas PR outfit. Didn't like the earrings at all, too stagey and not expensive looking, nor hair and makeup. She does not have enough on top to make this dress look right. The top looked forced, smashed and made you wonder where the boobs were. No. She made the little Indian woman look outshown.

thank god

Well, it's official -- there is a First Couple better looking than the Kennedys were!

The color of that dress makes her skin look so beautiful. She is just glowing, and I love how in love she and the Prez seem to be.

They are inspiring.

Love the dress! She looks GORGEOUS!

She looks phenomenal! Thanks for the post, Tlo!

She makes me very proud : )

This is one of the best looking couples in public life. Holy crap, nice work America. Do you also notice how it's really apparent that they really dig each other?

Gorgeous dress, and I like the India connection.

Mariana (The Unoriginal)

It could've been fitted better, but she looks great. The best I've seen so far.

LaFemmeFataledeNY

Not crazy about the stack of bangles, but loving everything else.

She looks stunning. The dress is amazing.
Agreed on the lip liner, though, plus not loving the wind tunnel hair.

It's nice to have a president and a first lady who seem not to have lost their libido.

This is her best look yet, without a doubt. The dress is so beautiful and perfect for the occasion.

Coming from a different country, I have a question for all of you.

Doesn't it feel a little "forced" to wear something Indian, an Indian designer, bangles and everything?

Why not wear an American designer since she is the first lady of the United States?

The Prime Minister's wife isn't wearing an American designer to please the Obamas.

I'm just curious to hear your opinion.

This is how it's done, people.

Goooooooooooaaaaaaaalllll!!!!!

The dress is fabulous and the whole look so elegant and effortless. Just really really classy.

the hair is the only drawback for me. i like the intent (sculptural, accenting her tall, narrow line) but it's a bit messy. Some more product or something.

Gorgeous! Simply Gorgeous!

Wow! I'm speechless, what a beautiful gown!

I just loved that dress the minute I saw her in it. Yeah, the makeup isn't so good this time, but so what? She's gorgeous!

I was hoping you guys would cover this visit. Shelly was very smart with her clothing choices and designers this trip.
Bravo, big IN

NotaMondayGirl

Shelley O is glowing!

Her accessories were a perfect compliment and befitted a state dinner for India's PM.

Love her!!!!

I was hoping you two would love this!

I think the fit at the bust is an eensy bit tight, but that could also be a lingerie issue. I loved the cut and color on her, and I love that she alluded to Indian style without going a costume route.

Honestly, if this had been her inaugural gown I would have been a much happier camper.

Isabella asked Doesn't it feel a little "forced" to wear something Indian, an Indian designer, bangles and everything?

I don't think so. I think using an Indian designer who lives and works in the United States was a very classy, and diplomatic, nod to her guests and to the spirit of cooperation among nations and cultures. The gown itself, while referencing certain Indian design elements, wasn't obviously "Indian", as would a dress made of sari cloth, for instance. As to the bangles, this isn't the first time Mrs. Obama has worn them, nor, I expect, will it be the last.

I don't think it's too forced because it is sari-inspired, but not an actual sari.

And I'm Canadian, so I'm a foreigner, too.

LOL I agree!

These guys just bring a smile to my face. It amazes me how they manage to look relaxed and natural - with all the lights and cameras, dignitaries, critics. How they do it is a mystery to me.

MO looks great. Bang up job this time!

pure fabulousity

I don't think it is over the top appeasement to wear a dress designed by a countryman of the guest of honor. Or to put it positively, I think it is a welcoming gesture to the PM and his wife. She is wearing something that will make them feel more at home.

There's nothing wrong with being kind.

I am not usually a fan of her fashion choices, but she looks amazing. Great choice!

This is the FIRST time I've seen FLOTUS actually look like a well put together first lady! B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L dress, congratulations Naem!

Doesn't it feel a little "forced" to wear something Indian, an Indian designer, bangles and everything?

It's not like she's wearing a sari. Would you object if she were wearing a dress designed by a French person?

She looks beautiful! I agree that gold looks great on her. And I think the dress looks absolutely lovely when set against the White House. :)

Breathtaking, really.

And a nice diplomatic gesture toward the guests, too.

The whole event was pretty darn fabulous.

dazzling...she must be reading a little TLO, no cardigan, no god awful belt, no big poofy skirt, best pix I've ever seen of her.

Good Lord!
Those are some pretty people!
Wonderful to see such shining examples of beauty & accomplishment representing this country.
I'm blown away w/ pride!

Okay kittens, we are not going to get into a political discussion here. Posts like this are about the clothes.

She looks utterly stunning. Perfect

Isabella, I think it's about being a good host/hostess. If I have someone from another culture visiting my home, I don't go all out trying to make everything just like in their home culture (which would at best be unsuccessful and at worst offensive), but I certainly add some touches that show that I want to help them feel welcome and at home as my quest.

i'm not dorothy gale

Beautiful dress, she looks so elegant and approachable. Not too fond of the updo, though, it needs some softness around the face.

Wish this had been her inaugural dress. She looks fabulous, but that lip liner has to go.

We have a beautiful first lady.

They are so into each other, and it's a wonderful thing to see. He obviously adores her, and for good reason. She's stunning.

As for the Indian designer question, I think it's great that she chose him. Who's to say that he isn't an American citizen now? I think it's a great way to show how the US and Indian can come together and create something wonderful.

Gotta say, they look like they are from Land of the Giants though.

She is absolutely stunning!! Her skin glows from the tones in her dress. Yeah, the lip liner's a no-no, but overlooking that, she just is breathtaking. We have the sexiest, hot Prez and First Lady!

god, I just love being so proud of my president and his bombshell of a smart, awesome wife. Not to say I wasn't proud of and in love with Hillary Clinton for 8 years, but...not like this. Shelly O in 2016.

Lovely, just lovely. The color is perfect for her.

But the look is mostly in the material, because it's a basic dress.

And look - no cardigan or belt! :D

From the neck down looks great. I think her hair looks like she's standing in a wind tunnel and her makeup looks too bare or something, not sure what is up with it, I just know I don't like it. Just the sight of him makes me want to vomit, but her dress is great. Best I've seen her dressed in a while.

Isebela - I think it totally makes sense to wear something by and Indian designer. Why not. If I were her I would end up with a collection of dresses from around the world when all was said and done.

I love how everyone is "proud" of our president because him and his girlfriend look pretty. shows how lame our country is.

I see a few other people don't like her hair either. I think it's wrong for the outfit, but also I think it's too young for her. Or maybe just undignified.

While I'm not a fan of the President, it is so refreshing to have a stylish First Lady. It's been a while...
She looks stunning in this. The gown, hair and accessories were all perfect. Good for her.

fragileindustries

What an all around fabulous woman.

All win. A spectacular fabric, but more about the way it flatters her sheer fabulosity.

My tiny complaint is not the makeup (could be better but she's still gorgeous) but the loose ends on the hair. A great look sometimes, but too edgy for a state dinner.

That's just a teeny tiny complaint. Am I seeing the beginning of some international brotherhood in the comments that reflect even those who aren't fans of her husband still love this look? Keep it up, Shelly, and the Congressional majority is safe.

best i've ever seen her!

Absolutely stunning. Love the earrings and the hair, too.

It's one way that we show respect for another culture/country. It's also a wish to make a visitor comfortable by seeing something that they can relate to.

I love her and it's a lovely dress, but standing next to Gursharan Kaur she looks a bit Bollywood, no?

As lovely as she is, her slouchy posture and rounded shoulders always keep from her looking completely A+. Don't bother excusing it by saying she's tall. Tall girls can stand up straight and they happen to look great when they do. Otherwise she looks real nice. Except that shot from the back? Not so lovely.
Two words: Wide.Load. From shoulders to shins.

Absolutely gorgeous. Too bad this was not her inaugural gown. It is perfect on her.

This White House photo shows the "standing on the stoop, waiting for our guests" scene. Pretty crazy.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/whitehouse/4134997036/

It gives a nice view of Michelle's back, standing up straight.

Pure class - take note, Hollywood!
I love the way he looks at her in the first few pics! very special.
Nice to have some class a la Kennedy-era in the WH again.

I love everything about it. From selecting the designer to how she looked wearing it that night.

The hair, the jewelry and the very handsome date complete the look!

She looks great but from the back her shoulders look massive. Probably just in comparison to her more diminutive counterparts in the photo.

Politics aside, I am so proud that she is our First Lady - she does so with grace and beauty. Sure she doesn't hit a home run every time, but it's so nice to see her actually VISIBLE as opposed to the last 8 years!

Oops, I guess that wasn't really politics aside, was it? :)

Don't take your frustrations out on them. Just because you can't work things out...

Um, that's his WIFE.

Michelle looks beautiful and regal -- which is why it's so much more painful than usual to load up this blog and see you guys call her "Shelley" like she's some lot lizard you met on a road trip. :(

Seriously, she's a grown woman. Do you really need to use a diminutive for her? She's not just the First Lady; she's an intelligent, vibrant, adult woman. I think she's earned the right to be called by her proper name, even on a fun, fluffy blog about an even fluffier reality show.

Holy Crap, the president and his wife are giants!!

The dress is lovely though, such elegance.

I keep coming back to this thread to look at the pics again. I can't get over how gorgeous the First Lady looks in that gown. Love the color and the shimmery overlay.

Loved the dress, she looked great. "Flesh" color is so OUT. Plus Shelley's flesh is a much different color than my flesh.

Best I've ever seen her look. Simply stunning, pure and simple.

@Anonymous 10:22 - I too cringe when I see the words 'Shelley O.' Must every person have their name Diddified? So stupid, so ghetto.

S T U N N I N G ! ! !

:)

I've always assumed that the "Shelley O." is a play on "Jackie O."

there's some gorgeousness going with naeem khan's collection over on (his/her) web-site!!!! she should wear more of this stuff... even the sportswear is gorge and would be age appropriate

i agree that she looks beautiful, but honestly, how can fashion bloggers ignore the bad fit in the bust?

I'm just curious how people can say that they dislike her? What has she done to dislike, unless graduating from Harvard and being married to the President are grounds for disliking someone. She doesn't issue policy initiatives or sit in the Sit Room...

Oh yeah, dress is fab.

Simple. She's black. That's ALWAYS been the root of their problems with her.

She looks exquisite from a distance, but I agree about the makeup. She also needs to learn a different way to smile with her lips closed-she purses her lips forward and it makes her look like she's tasting or smelling something unpleasant!

"i agree that she looks beautiful, but honestly, how can fashion bloggers ignore the bad fit in the bust?"

Totally agree, it's too tight around the boobs - gives her a bit of back fat too. I do love the dress and the look as a whole, but that little bit of tailoring would have made it perfect.
