They're back!Darlings, please don't hate us. What with all the Project Runway blogging and the Mad Men blogging and the Glee blogging and the spring collections, we just couldn't find the time to sit down and spend the required couple of hours counting votes and looking for pictures for the next round. Forgive us?
For those of you just joining us, this is a competition pitting mega-famous actresses from the fifties and the sixties who embodied the two major archetypes of sex symbols for the period: the Virgin and the Vixen. Each "week" (yeah, right) we pit a famous virgin and/or a famous vixen up against another and the readers vote on which one wins. You can use whatever criteria you like to make your decision. We tend to frame it as if they're in an imaginary cage match, but most of the time the readers simply vote for their favorite. It was a tough competition and a lot of legendary ladies hit the mat and never got up again. We're in the finals now, but here's how the competition went down:
It was at this point, that we started with the big guns. Not that any of the previous ladies weren't big guns in their own right, but it was time to break out the virgins and/or vixens that have passed into legend and only need to be referred to by their first names.
Do you see how fickle you bitches are? Audrey Hepburn! Not making it to the finals! You guys are nuts. Granted, going up against Sophia was a pretty tall order, but that's why they're called the big guns.
Before we broke out the REALLY big guns, it was time to bring back the one competitor who managed to beat three bitches in a row. Hence:
Yow. Now that's a toughie. Two legendary ladies with very different styles (and a penchant for playing hookers). Which one was still standing after the votes were counted? Well, we'll tell ya, it was a very close race, but in the end, only one hooker can make it out of the ring alive.
We are sad to inform you that...
We are sad to inform you that...
And it's all your fault! But don't worry. She has a tendency to not stay dead long.
Anyway, here it is; the finals of the Virgins vs. Vixens showdowns. Sophia hoists up her tits and re-enters the ring to take on the woman who embodied virginity more than any other actress of the period (and if you believe the stories, pulled the wool over the eyes of the public while doing it). These two ladies couldn't be more different and yet in their day, they were two of the biggest box office draws around.
takes on...
MISS DORIS DAY, BITCHES!The quintessential vixen up against the quintessential virgin. Cast your votes now. One of these ladies is going DOWN! And not in the good way!

Seriously Sophia.

Let's see, Cary Grant costarred with both these ladies. With which did he fall head over heals in lust/love, carrying on a barely concealed and very passionate affair while filming? )
Smokin' hot Sophia Loren. She pretty much blows everybody else out of the water.
(The romance ended, as such things do, and they barely spoke to each other afterwards the breakup was so brutal. It would make a great movie, in fact, but who in the world could possibly portray the sheer power and beauty of La Loren?)
11/1/09, 7:42 PM
Sophia! Love this vixen!
:)
11/1/09, 8:02 PM
Damn, I think I just blew an aneurysm thinking about this one! Love Doris, that voice was to die for and she was a great pal to Rock. But I gotta go with Sophia, she went to prison and even made that look classy!

11/1/09, 8:36 PM
What? this is not even a fair fight and not because of how sexy steamy Sophia is but because... she's Sophia MotherFucking Loren! Sophie, hands down.
11/1/09, 8:36 PM
Doris, of course. Couldn't be any other way.
11/1/09, 8:40 PM
Bloody hell! Audrey didn't make it?!?? Audrey!??!! I'm through with this, poodles. This is not my world.
Okay, okay. I find that I can't stay away, so if it can't be Audrey, I say yea to Ms. Day.

11/1/09, 9:28 PM

11/2/09, 12:05 AM
Doris Day, Bay-bay.
11/2/09, 12:08 AM
I knew it was going to be Doris Day as the ultimate "virgin"...
And since I grew up watching Doris Day movies with my mum and my mum is my hero I have to give up my vote wholeheartedly to the lovely Miss Day.
My mother always said that she thought she was the most beautiful woman in the world but I strongly disagreed and told her it was her instead ;)
11/2/09, 12:15 AM
Sophia!
11/2/09, 12:19 AM
Doris is a dream, but I've got to give my vote to Sophia!
11/2/09, 12:23 AM
Doris Day, absolutely.

*Sigh* I know I'm too late in the game and no one's going to read this, but I'm really quite disappointed in the direction this battle is taking. Is there a massive straight-guy contingent on this blog that I'm unaware of, or is the power of Loren's sexuality such that everybody is treating this competition like a game of "Who Would You Rather Do?"
Day's "virginal" status was all about the way the battle of the sexes was depicted in '50s/'60s romantic comedies. Sex itself became the battleground. The women in those movies have become easy targets since the sexual revolution (which always was rather at odds with the feminist movement), but they were asserting a pre-feminist message of empowerment. The message was explicated by Hope Lange in The Best of Everything, when she goes off on her ex-boyfriend (who tries to begin an affair with her after he marries somebody else) not only for her own sake, but on behalf of the woman who married him, on behalf of her friends who've been pushed around by men--on behalf of women everywhere who have to deal with the fact that men are allowed to be as shitty as they want because they're never the ones to suffer the consequences. Being "virginal" meant being smart enough and secure enough to protect oneself from the carelessness of men.
This particular battle is really solidifying the problematic nature of the Virgin/Vixen era, and it's making me a bit misty-eyed for the Dames and Divas, who didn't have to choose between sexuality and intelligence. But if it has to be a choice, give me the woman who's sunny smile is merely to draw attention from the daggers in her eyes. That's one hopeless vote for Doris.
11/2/09, 2:14 AM
Sophia, of course.
11/2/09, 3:25 AM
All America Doris Day all the way. I never wanted to be like Sophia, but as a young girl at the time, I very much wanted to look as glamorous and approachable as Doris.
11/2/09, 4:57 AM
The whole concept of Doris Day is like nails on a chalkboard for me.
Sophia!!!!
11/2/09, 5:00 AM
Doris for the win. Sophia Loren was certainly sexy with a great figure, but watch any of Doris's movies and her figure compares to anyone's. A great rack, a great ass, and she could work it. She was the top box office attraction for years, something Sophia never came close to achieving. Plus, that fabulous singing voice. She suffered through a lot of bad material (songs and movies) due to her rat of a manager husband, but she survived him and paid off the huge debt he left her with rather than declare bankruptcy. That's why she did the TV show so I'm not going to fault her for that. And she supported Rock to the end when others didn't. Then there are the animals. Doris has her heart and head in the right place, but she's also tough as nails and can hold her own with anyone, including Sophia. It's DD for me.
11/2/09, 7:55 AM
Sophia!
11/2/09, 8:00 AM
Sophia per vincere!
11/2/09, 8:35 AM
Sophia
11/2/09, 8:37 AM
Let us not forget about the acting! Sophia not only was a complete sex symbol but a fantastic actress! Doris was a fine singer and was a beautiful beard for Rock Hudson but I never thought her acting was so good. However, Sophia not only was a lovely beard for Cary Grant but she did was awesome in "The Women". Sophia...Mamma Mia!
11/2/09, 8:46 AM
Doris Day!
11/2/09, 9:21 AM
Come on,

Thank you guys for the Monday Morning giggles!
Sophia knocks Doris Day in the dust and doesn't even pause as she sashays down the street.
11/2/09, 10:12 AM
A Hitchcock blonde always wins with me. Even if she's a virgin.

11/2/09 10:36 AM Doris Day. And by the way, in "Love Me or Leave Me?" Total slut.
Actually, Ruth Etting was the total slut, but Doris made that baby work!
And if anyone is seeking a "vixinous" side of DD, didn't she have an affair with an African-American baseball player in the late 50s-early60s?
What could have been more scandalous then that in that day and age (we're talking 'Mad Men' ages, here, people.)
11/2/09, 10:50 AM
Sophia. Timeless is what it is.

AAAAAGH I'm glad I didn't look over the weekend.
With nearly 500 posts already there's no way that I'm going to read and digest them all, and I'm not going to be able to avoid repeating something somebody already said. So a long post explaining why I have nothing witty.
There has always been something about DD that has made my skin crawl. So sorry, Miss All American Girl, it's
SOPHIA
11/2/09, 11:14 AM
Ciabatta or Wonder bread?
Sophia, definitely
11/2/09, 11:15 AM
You think Sophia had a tough background growing up during WWII? Doris' was a lot tougher and while Sophia seems to have led a charmed adulthood--Doris HAS NOT. A husband who lost all her money and then died on her, a son who was Manson's intended victim, not Sharon Tate and that's just the tip. AND she still made it seem like she was the 'girl next door'. When Jimmy Cagney was asked who were the top three best actresses he ever worked with--Doris Day was one of them. DORIS for the win
11/2/09, 11:15 AM
Are you people crazy?!?!? It's DORIS F*@%ING DAY!!! PLEASE! Sophia is truly awe inspiring... but NOBODY puts Doris in a corner! DORIS DAY FTW!!! jeez, how did I get all screamy over this?
11/2/09, 11:18 AM
My picks have not been doing to well till now, so I'll just jump on the bandwagon and vote for Sophia, even though she beat my brilliant Audrey.
11/2/09, 11:27 AM
As if. Sophia all the way.
11/2/09, 11:30 AM
I'm finding this surprisingly difficult. My first instinct was Sophia. But then I started thinking about Doris. Butter wouldn't melt in her mouth. Or would it? She's tougher than she seems. She'd almost have to be, wouldn't she? I think it was all an act, and she was more vixen than virgin. Plus she's coming to the fight fresh.
Doris FTW!
11/2/09, 11:51 AM
Ms. Day is a wonderful woman and an inspirational figure, but...
Sophia - now there's a goddess in progress.
Sophia FTW.

Sophia!
11/2/09, 12:10 PM
Now, see, the cerulean number Doris is wearing is what we should have been seeing on the runway for the Bob Mackie/Xtina challenge, but I digress...
Wow, this is tough but I'm going to have to go with DORIS DAY. Too iconic to ignore, too well-dressed to be anything but the penultimate object of aspiration for a generation of women before Marlo and Mary - how could it be anyone else?
11/2/09, 12:21 PM
Doris Day is a snapshot of time. 50's, early 60's perfection of the Virgin.
Sophia Loren is timeless.
Sophia ftw.
11/2/09, 12:26 PM
Doris.
11/2/09, 12:31 PM
My perpetual vote is for Audrey Hepburn, but given the choice between Sophia and Doris Day....
DORIS! No one has ever portrayed virginity in a sweeter and sexier way. And she was no virgin either!
11/2/09, 12:42 PM
Sophia
11/2/09, 12:44 PM

Sophia Loren FTW.

11/2/09, 2:09 PM
Doris. Naturally.
11/2/09, 2:32 PM
Audrey Hepburn? No? Sigh. Doris Day then.
11/2/09, 2:43 PM

11/2/09, 3:39 PM
Sophia forever!
11/2/09, 4:08 PM
sophia!
11/2/09, 4:18 PM
Miss Day had a lovely voice, but I can't help associating her with a certain phoniness and pretense that I always think of when I think of the fifties. Miss Loren, on the other hand, always oozed authenticity.
Sophia for the win.
11/2/09, 4:39 PM
Sophia FTW.
11/2/09, 5:15 PM
Que sera sera, whatever will be, will be, but Doris Day gets the vote from me!
C'mon, I cannot vote against Doris Day, no way, not in this matchup, she is AH-MAY-ZING!
11/2/09, 5:36 PM
I've always been a Sophia fan, so Sophia for the win!!

Seriously, who do we talk about more: Joan Holloway or Peggy Olson?
Sophia FTW.
11/3/09, 3:29 PM
hazel shade said... That's one hopeless vote for Doris.
hazel shade, if you check back here - that is a fascinating defense of Doris. I actually read it aloud to my husband.
11/3/09, 4:02 PM
Are you kidding? not even a question. Sophia FTW
11/3/09, 4:22 PM
Don't hate me... I've got to go for Doris Day.
11/3/09, 4:31 PM
All the anti-Doris Day talk is hurting my heart! Sophia is great, don't get me wrong, but Doris can flay any man with her tongue. Heh.
I'm shocked that someone who can cut a pompous man down to size using a glare and an elegantly worded snub ... and who can sing, dance, act, and loves animals ... is not more appreciated. She was not simply the image of the perfect lily-white virgin! Whoever recommended "Midnight Lace" and "That Touch of Mink," Amen!
I love her. Thought I'm vastly outnumbered, Doris FTW.
anna_chronistic
11/3/09, 5:55 PM
Doris! But mostly because I'm still pissed that Sophia was the one to bump Audrey from the running.
11/3/09, 6:03 PM
I vote for the underdog!
DORIS DAY FOR THE WIN PLEASE!
11/3/09, 7:48 PM
DORIS DAY.
11/3/09, 9:05 PM
Doris M-Fing DAY Bitches! That Touch of Mink, Pillow Talk, Please Don't Eat the Daisies!!! Go DORIS (but I love you bella Sophia!)
11/3/09, 9:15 PM
Doris Day has been one of my favorite musical stars since I was a child, there is no way I could not vote for her! Doris Day ftw!
11/3/09, 10:36 PM
sophia!
11/3/09, 11:46 PM
Sophia ftw. no doubt about it.
11/4/09, 1:45 AM
That pic of Sophia Loren is pretty amazing but she aged in an awful way, looks hard, and can't keep her breasts under wraps; the pic of Doris is not her best but I'm going with the sublime and now-reclusive Miss Day, who never seemed to really need the limelight but graced us anyway with her sweet presence. She was an original, she did overcome a lot of obstacles, she starred in some really good movies, she was always interesting without being neurotic, feminine without being needy in the slightest, she loves animals and has a really smart organization to support them in legal and other ways, and I even have a quote of hers under my car visor that says something really nice about dogs. Go Doris! We love you!

I hope I'm not too late on this, but CMON. I've watched the trailer for Nine more times than I can count, and everytime Sophia appears, you can't help but get goosebumps. That woman still inspires sex, even after all these years.
SOPHIA FTW.
11/4/09, 5:45 PM
Doris!
11/4/09, 9:35 PM
I can!! I can vote against Doris Day!

11/5/09, 1:37 PM
Ah, this is indeed a toughie. Love ya, Doris but....Viva La Loren!!
11/5/09, 3:58 PM
Oh my. So hard to choose. Sophia is one of the sexiest women who has ever lived even as an older woman. Doris Day however has great talent.
Doris ftw.
11/8/09, 7:45 PM
sophia.
11/9/09, 9:59 PM
Please don't eat the daisies!
Don't let Sophia eat Doris!
Vote for Doris Day, and say, que sera, sera!
11/11/09, 1:24 AM
Doris Day. Most definitely.
11/12/09, 5:33 AM
Darling Sophia of course!
Those lips. That voice. The lusty eyes of the century. The absolutely magnificent knockers. Her thoroughly unconventional, authentic, careless beauty. She smolders.
When I grow up, I want to be Miss Loren.
11/15/09, 7:28 PM
I'm going with DoDo. Anyone who has heard her perform Ruth Etting's songs in "Love Me or Leave Me" has to love her forever. Sophia is indeed a force of nature but she cain't SING like that little ol' Doris Keppelhof!!
11/17/09, 1:10 AM
I hope I'm not too late. Sophia in this matchup.
I'm still bitter about Audrey, she is the clear winner in any competition. She beats Sophia, DD, Tim Gunn, Nina, and the Dutchess put together, she even beats Lauren Bacall. Name the cage, Audrey'd be the only one left standing, then walk away, spit the competition's ear out of her mouth, smile, and still look as pure as an ice cream sundae.
But yeah, given the matchup, I gotta go with Sophia. She smoulders better than DD sings.
11/21/09, 1:54 AM
DORIS DORIS DORIS.
12/1/09, 5:03 PM
Doris Day. (A month too late!)
