Yea or Nay: Lace Headband

Darlings, the time has come for you to exercise your Constitutional right to vote on a pressing issue.

Victoria Beckham, who will serve as a guest judge on American Idol, heads auditions in Boston wearing the Carmontelle dress from her fall 2009 collection and YSL Trib Two platform pumps, which is to be expected. It's become something of a uniform for her in recent months. So let's forget about everything below the neck (which shouldn't be hard; all you have to do is squint a little and she magically disappears like a naked lady on a vintage naughty pen) and focus on her head:

It's chemo-chic, darlings! No, it's a fashion salute to skin disease! Or how about...it's all the rage to make yourself look like you're 80!

Okay, obviously we vote NAY, but don't let our opinion sway you. You tell us: is this a YAY or a NAY? Would you wear this? Do you think ANYONE could wear this and look good?

The nayest nay since the meggings. You said it with "chemo-chic." It looks like a dirty, post-brain surgery bandage.

I'm just more or less amused that Posh is being asked to judge a singing contest.

Oh, and Nay.

There is something very Norma Desmond about it.

No way. It's terrible.

And, seriously, girl, eat a burger or something. Yikes.

I am all about using scarves as headbands . . . but I think she stretched the proportion of her face with too high a forehead and it doesn't work here.
I'm not against this idea in theory.

OUT!!! Good god she looks like a very very old Joan Collins.

I apogize in advance to Joan Collins because she can and does wear this head dress lok very well.

TampaBay

I was thinking it looked more like the bottom of a pair of lace leggings or the top of a pair of lacy panties, woot for recycling clothing.

I vote nay

A big ol' NAY as is, but...

If the hair was longer so as to cover up the hot mess at the nape, the "headband" set back a bit further so you could actually see her hairline, and her ears were not being strapped down by that thing, then it MIGHT work. But probably not.

I think this can be a cute look, just not on her with that short hair and severe dress. My goodness she looks thin.

Thanks dolls,
The Glamorous Housewife

C'est moi, c'est moi Lola

Nay, honeys, NAY!

It makes her look like she's got a bad weave.

And I'm with Anon 10:23 about her judging a singing contest.

Then again, I don't think Simon on AI can sing either....

It's not the headband. It's the anorexia.

I bet it could be pulled off, but she sure as hell isn't.

No one should wear those. Ever. Nay

It looks horrible on her. She looks like 20 years older.

Wow, I think this is the worst she's ever looked.

Lace headband = yes.
Lace headband right at your hairline = no.
Lace headband right at your hairline in a scallopy shape and virtually the same color as your hair = NO, NO, NO!

I kinda like it, but think it would work better on a person with lighter hair—like a blonde or redhead. On a dark brunette, it does recall some weird skin condition or freaky hairline.

A big yay, auf, no, nein.

What the hell was she thinking? Seriously.

I like it. Yay

She keeps putting off a Rhoda vibe with that headband. That is NOT a compliment.

I'm not against headscarves and hairbands per se - but this is a$$. NAY!

oh Nay, it looks like she's hiding a tragically receding hairline. or was getting ready to don her wig/hairpiece, was interrupted & forgot to check a mirror before leaving the house.

Now, could *anyone* pull it off? Well, maybe someone very young, less thin, and with more contrast between hair color and headband. And as part of a more casual look. Maybe.

Hot weather is not good for Posh. She looks like a wiltered jellybean.

It seems kind of dumb to judge an entire look based on how one person is wearing it. I have seen girls wearing these in a very cute way, but Posh looks fug. So I vote yea for the look, nay for Posh's bastardization of it.

I'm genetically opposed to anything that reminds me of the Madonna minion's of the 80s who layered black and white lace, top and bottom, and wore 40 billion black gummy bracelets.

However, I think the reason this looks so egregiously bad is that the hand bands placement and width just make her looks MORE like a bobble-head doll.

Huh. I really didn't think that was possible. Way to go Posh.

NAY!

CanIGetYouAnything?

My grandmother can pull it off and that's about it.

It seems like it should work... maybe on someone else.

~L

Lace does not belong on your head. And headbands pretty much only look good on Leighton Meester as Blair. Apparently she didn't have her main gay with her to tell her "oh honey, no...just no."

Was she trying to look more serious or more professional? I don't get it.

...if posh can't pull it off, no one can.

I'm with Valerie. Lace headbands can be quite adorable (Not on me and the back of my head is flat and no headband holds up~ Thanks, mom!).

Victoria's choice was a very, very poor one. She has a prominent forehead and the high hair looks dull and frizzy. Maybe she was going for the whole "antique doll that spent 50 years in the attic and needs major repair" look.

In the headband's deffense....check it out on this girl (It's Etsy, but I'm not endorsing or anything, just giving a visual):

http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5371308

Yes to the principle, NO NO NO NO GOD NO to Posh's execution of it. She looks incredibly unhealthy, especially in that left-hand photo where her neck is all stretched and turtle-looking.

I have seen headbands like this on younger girls with long, otherwise loose, hair, and it looks good. On short hair, or hair that's put up, it looks clinical: either a face scrub or some sort of medical procedure is going on there.

Like others here, I don't think a headband is always a bad thing but this one isn't working.

Seriously, chemo-chic is a bit of a slap at any of your readers who may be undergoing chemo. I have an immune disorder that occasionally makes a patch of my hair fall out and while I can cover it up with hair styles, I understand how traumatic it is for a woman to lose her hair. I enjoy you guys and your sense of humor but that was a bit thoughtless.

I kinda like the concept. Still don't like her.

No, no, no. Her forehead is not her best feature.

Someone could probably wear some version of this, but on her it just looks like she's trying to hide facelift scars or the join of a wig or something.

bitchybitchybitchy

Is this Posh's way of dealing with a bad hair day? If so, it isn't working.

And, good grief, can someone please convince this woman that actually eating food is a healthy thing to do?

NO NO NO.

I say to thee NAY!!! Demonic Lace Headband, I rebuke theeeeeeeeee!!!

I'm going nay with this one. I like the idea of a lace headband but it looks like she just ran into a fabric store and tied some lace trim around her head.

Since it is apparently ok to tell Posh what to eat, I assume the next time something about say, Kate Winslet is posted my comments about how she needs to eat fewer cheeseburgers will go unquestioned and undeleted. Right? Right? It is the same thing, after all.

Nay!

Posh looks like she needs a day or two at the spa to get "refreshed".

Oh, Dear Lord, NO!! Just another reason to keep me a non-fan of the stick figure. She should have gone all the way and just donned a mantilla, it couldn't have looked any more ridiculous.

It isn't flattering in ANY way, shape or form. First, it makes her hair look like some sort of afro or birds nest sticking out behind her. Worst of all, it ages her, makes her face look old and harsh. A resounding NAY.

Big nay, like the horse it is on.

NAY!

Gah. I don't think anybody could pull that off.

reminds me of carol burnett's portrayal of nora desmond!

Ick, it looks old and dry and scabby. [shudders] My forehead is itching in sympathy.

That women had better start eating because boy, does she look unhealthy.

BookieBookie

Big nay. Also a big nay for the length of her skirt.

Dowdy.

1. Pull the damn lace thingy off your ear.

2. If you're trying to go for "Mad Men" 60's chic, wear a colorful scarf instead.

3. If you're trying for a 40's look, use the black lace to fashion a snood and fix the back of your hair into it--tying it at the top of your head and leaving your natural hairline.

Oh, and I vote NAY.

One Word: GHETTO

Dear Lord... NAY. Posh can get away with lots of crazy getups but this is more full of NAY than a herd of horses.

Nay! It's not a good look.

I think it looks fine. Love the dress, in fact, which surprises me. I'm also surprised to be on the side of VB, since I dislike her and don't generally find her attractive. But this is okay.

I actually think it might look okay on someone with different colored hair an less severe makeup. As it is, its a rather frightening effect.

I concur.

But I want those shoes.

For some skinny people, gaining weight is just as hard as a truly obese person trying to lose weight. Posh Spice has always been skeleton thin. I am sure with all the problems she is having (if you believe 50% of what is written in the tabloids) that a good appetite is not one of the things she has right now.

TampaBay

I love a headband. That said, this does her no favors. It's sad, really. She's a perfectly lovely woman, but she has starved herself into some shriveled facsimile of her previous self. Dressing a skeleton up in couture doesn't make it look any better.

NAY, NAY, and NAY again. I think she either looks like a drag queen who is about to put on her make-up or she is getting ready to get plastic surgery. Tighter! Higher! Stretch the skin, dammit!

As for the meggings, I just saw the latest PR Australia episode, where one of the designers wore them out in the chilly Melbourne air. He looked atrocious. Another definite NAY.

I think it could work, but this doesn't. It looks like her wig is sliding off.

She looks like she's got a garter stuck on her head.

It makes her look old...in an 80's Dallas kind of way. All she needs is some shoulderpads and a fur coat.

I think it's the emaciated face that gives her the chemo look even more than the awful headband.

You should only wear a headband like that if you are in the act of washing your face.

It looks as though she forgot to put on her wig.

I'm bucking the trend and voting YAY. It makes her hair look wonderfully old-school, like Cruella DeVille crossed with Bride of Frankenstein.

It's mean-spirited to tell a thin woman to "eat a burger" or sandwich or whatever. WTF people.

It looks like her forehead is charred.

Maybe if it had been in a different color, MAYBE.

I hate to say it but in that first row of doubles she looks like her face is overly pulled and reminds me of Nancy Pelosi.

Is her hair falling out?

Nay.

I second "it looks like her wig is falling off". Not flattering.

Tampa Bay

For some skinny people, gaining weight is just as hard as a truly obese person trying to lose weight.

True. And I don't like the Eat a burger comments.

But sometimes it appears that it is not a matter of "gaining weight is just as hard" sometimes it is a choice (anorexia, compulsive exercise, etc) and it is hard to be as sympathetic when the person seems to have a lot of fake parts. (or at least a lot of work)

My lawd!

Splosh Spice has terrified me for years now.

I mean if she has the hoodoo voodoo powers to snag Beckham, imagine what she could do to the masses. That is the Poo that therapy bills are made of.

And now this lovely look - some innocent granny is missing the hem of her slip for the name of fashion.

The TRAVESTY, my bebes!
The.
Travesty.
(Yes, I am still bitter she is [potentially] replacing Paula, my crazy, over-medicated, nonsensical dancer lady, whom I love.)

Needless to say, count this as a "Nay!" And, as Splosh Spice there can verify, in Horse that translates to "Ohhellno."

Also, we need to remember that some people photograph "fat and chunky" though they are really rather slim such as Kim Zolciak of TRH of Atlanta and some people photograph 'skinny & scrawny" when they really are rather curvy such as Cher in 30s and 40s.

I think headbands and scarves can be cute when worn correctly.

THIS, is clearly not that time. Yay in theory/concept, nay in execution.

NO!!!!! And I used to wear headbands when my hair was longer.

Victoria's hair looks like mine when I use a circle of elastic to pull back my hair before I wash my face--all sticky-uppy and not the least bit attractive.

The Esty site given in a post is a religious site and the scarves and wide headbands are for covering your hair. However, the girl modeling the headbands has bangs to soften her face. She does not push her hair back and up.

mummy needs champagne

Jesus. Norma Desmond, anyone?

Ah, I see joyjoy beat me to it!

Also, that eye makeup takes her look straight into the post-apocalyptic. If you must take a swing at a headband, go for the fresh angle, not the startrek alien du jour angle.

ixnay.

I don't like it at all here, but I like the idea and think it could look good on someone else with a different hairstyle or with a slimmer lace band maybe.

Nay, nay, nay. I like headbands and I even like this headband but aren't you supposed to show some of your hair in front of your headband?

I like headbands and scarves used as headbands, if done right. I wear them occasionally. They can be very chic but Posh has done this all wrong so it's a NAY.

The headband needs to provide some contrast with the hair color and it must be in proportion to the forehead/head. For instance, I have a very small head so I stay away from very wide bands. Posh should too.

I kind of love that dress but it looks terrible on her. It needs to be a little bit shorter. And the shoes are too matchy. When will the stripper shoe craze be over? Soon, I hope.

It looks like underwear...

Oh dear. She looks horrible in those pictures from the neck up. She looks much older, and kind of common, not her usual "Posh" self. I hope that she doesn't wear this style again!

a big Nay on the lace headband. It looks like the edging on my grandmother's old upholstered chair.

Eeew, it looks like her garter slipped all the way up to her forehead.
Neigh nay.

This look really really ages her. And I'm kinda in shock and awe that a woman naturally has a hairline that high, her forehead is enormous, poor thing. This look only emphasizes that.

Maybe if she had longer or thicker hair. But as it is, NO.

I like the Roland Mouret I mean VB dress. And the shoes. I don't hate the lace headband, but it could be better.
I like her hair dark. Yay (mostly)

I think it could be a yay if worn a different way. Like maybe thinner and with different hair. Maybe.

Wow could her collection BE a bigger rip off of Roland Mouret?!

The lace headband might be better if it were behind the hairline...but even then...it's a big WHY for me. Not yay or nay, but WHY?

NAAAAY... and the skirt on that dress looks two sizes too big (obviously, since she is emaciated to the limit).

I'm going to have to say NAY because if Posh can't pull it off, what hope is there for the rest of us?

PS- Impossible for me to ignore everything below the neck. I love that dress and those shoes, but not together.

I changed my mind. I DO like them together, but I still hate the headband.

I'm voting a big NAY on the headband and on the grotesque eye makeup. As Carlanoodle said to start things off, "the nayest nay since the meggings."

bitchybitchybitchy

Point taken, TampaBay.

It looks like she just got effed, was late for something, and forgot that her underwear was still on her head.

Big ol' NAY. It ages her, it detracts from her features and it's just kind of silly looking.

Mariana (The Unoriginal)

BIG NOOOOO!

She looks AWFUL!!!

VB has NOT always been so rail thin. Google pictures of the Spice Girls in their heyday. She had a fit, healthy looking body ten years ago.

I'm having a hard time getting past how awful she looks. Skeletal just makes you look old, people!

I don't like it on her. I might be able to like it on someone else... but my instinct says that it would take a lot for me to do so.

If it was a fun bright color, I'd like it better. As it is, it looks like something that Tanya would wear to a funeral on Footballers Wives

But sometimes it appears that it is not a matter of "gaining weight is just as hard" sometimes it is a choice (anorexia, compulsive exercise, etc) and it is hard to be as sympathetic when the person seems to have a lot of fake parts. (or at least a lot of work)

If you think anorexia or compulsive exercise are "choices" that people make, they you need to do a little research. Also, look up the definition of "compulsive."

The moment I saw this elsewhere I knew it would show up here!

It's very wrong.

Ye Gods. NAY to the trillionth power.

Bag Lady Chic? Sorry, too "trashy."

*snicker*

This is what we short-haired girls do when we are growing it out, but it's definitely a NAY.

prob'ly been said but...
it kinda looks like she's wearing panties on her head.....

She's doing it to hide the fact that her "pixie cut" didn't work and so her hair is in the awkward growing out stage now. I'm encouraged to see a little meat on her bones-- in the last pictures I saw of her she seemed ghoulish and frail.

Forget the lace headband -- it's the rest of her that's making her look 80 years old. She seriously looks like an elderly, rail-thin socialite with immaculately dyed hair and several rounds of plastic surgery.

In these photos, she's officially scarier than Scary Spice.

God she looks rough.

NAY on headbands in general.

Only Little Edie would stand a chance at making a lace hairline work, and even then it wouldn't be with a headband, it'd be a headscarf with lace trim.

I just wrote a lot of compound words that started with 'head'.

I actually vote YAY, however, she is wearing it too tight, too far back, and she's too old for it. Its a young trend.

Eh. It reminds me of when I was little and would play in my Mema's trimmings.

i don't think this comes down to yay or nay...i think there's something wrong with her. not in the funny "eat a sandwich" way, but like maybe she's losing her hair due to a medical condition? i know she has pcos, and one of the symptoms of pcos is hair loss. it looks like she's trying to camoflauge (spl??!) that.

Well, it's not as bad as the meggings.

Sort of like dying instantly in a plane crash isn't as bad as being slowly eaten by sharks.

It could be cute if:
a) the color of the headband were farther from the color of her hair. That's why it looks like a skin disease from some angles. They should be noticeably different.
b) it weren't placed so far forward on her forehead. Whenever I wear headbands I make sure there's at least an inch between my hairline and the band, otherwise it looks "chemo-chic" or like I'm washing my face.

I have a couple lace headbands that I love to wear (although my friends keep telling me that when I wear any sort of headband I look like I'm 6 years old) but Posh looks ridiculous. It makes her look like her hairline is receding. If she had pulled it back to show her hairline - ie sit on top of her hair instead of pulling it all back - it would have looked much better. Also, headbands should not cover the ears.

While I do luv headbands, this is not a good look.

I say nay to Posh but if it was a skinnier band on a 20 something girl with long hair, it could work.

It looks like the old headband my sister uses to hold her hair back when she washes her face.

Über-nay.

Nay Nay Nay. Not only does it look nasty, it has to feel itchy as hell.

THAT'S A LOT OF FOREHEAD!

I agree with Laura's reference to it being a Little Edie look!

It's " I didn't have time to do my roots" chic

My 8 year-old son just walked by as I was viewing this post and said "What is her face plastic or something?"

nooooooo no no no no no! I don't even like that look on babies.

I think that the lace in a funky color, with bangs and someone who isn't direly anorexic could rock this.

http://aaaalexsadventuresinasia.blogspot.com/

Normally I love head-bands, but I think, she's simply doing it wrongly. For headbands you need a) longer hair, b) at least a little strip of hair showing, c) non-covered ears and d) the age and face to pull it off.
She's getting each and every point of it wrong, so big NAAAAAYYYYY for her, but big YAY on head-bands in general, be it lace or anything else.

Actually this is quite a cute look on other women, but it's horrible on Victoria.

Nay, nay, nay. Looks like she's trying to keep her wig (or extensions) from falling off (or out).

I like it, but not on her.

I guess I'm the only one: I think the headband looks good. If it were a different color lace - a light color - it'd look very 'granny'. I think the color is appropriate, the lace frames her face (which is a wee bit too gaunt) and feminizes her hair/strong features. I don't think someone with lighter hair could pull it off because black lace would look too harsh against blonde or red, and light lace is just twee and virginal and ridiculous as a headband. This is a Yay, IMO.

I think a lace headband could definitely work in some capacity... don't rule it out entirely! But as for the way she's wearing it, and this particular lace headband, it is definitely OUT.

she's on verge of dying of anorexia here and the stupid headband just exacerbates it... she needs an INTERVENTION.

momica in ca

too many cats

Nay.

Is rogaine in her future?

Nay!! She looks like my grandma!

Well, while you all stare at the headband, I lay claim to the hot guy in the black suit behind her ;)

i'm not dorothy gale

Oh NAY. She looks like a haggard puppet.

Looks like Miss Posh is regretting that super short cut...
NAY!

She is not as hot as she thinks she is and canNOT get away with everything, clearly.

By the way, I was watching "Charade" this weekend and it was really striking how hard Posh is trying to ape Audrey Hepburn, in just about every way. (This is probably old news, but it's the first time I've noticed.) Only, where Audrey came off as charming and unstudied, no matter how much work actually went into her look, Posh seems severe and calculated, like she was put together by a team of market researchers.

Forget the headband- who's that gorgeous man behind her in the black armani with the black shirt and silver tie?

I vote with Hummingbird. I think she just extended her forehead too much. It probably would've looked pretty pushed further back on her head with longer hair.

I'm quoting TampaBay here: "TampaBay

I apogize in advance to Joan Collins because she can and does wear this head dress lok very well.

TampaBay"

I semi-agree, to me she looks more like an updated version of Joan Crawford.

Clearly Posh knows what to wear and has an excellent taste for fashion but her face shows her insanity due to starvation, please girl eat something before your body collapses!!

How old is this woman? She looks awful!

Yikes...............

I'm just sort of amazed that a freaking headband has generated almost 150 comments. Oh, and NAY.

She looks too skinny..and stressed, but then she always looks stressed. Maybe the headband is to cover up a plastic surgery scar? A wig? Zits?

I vote nay anyway.
