Yea or Nay: Lace Ears

HAHAHAHAHAHA!

Mary-Kate Olsen and Ashley Olsen attend the 'Opening Ceremony' Japan flagship store opening reception party on August 29, 2009 in Tokyo wearing Maison Michel fall 2009 lace ears.

So *snort* minions, we leave *snicker* this one open to you. Bound to be come a *titter* trend or bound to be relegated to the fashion dustbin along with the Nehru jacket and the leisure suit? We are refraining *heh* from offering our opin--HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

We can't! You do it!

Is this the next evolution from Madonna's rabbit ears? Or some sort of post-modern commentary on Playboy bunnies?
I'm going with simply absurd.

They look like they had a fun time at Goth Disneyworld.

A "yay" if I was 8 years old and my style icon was Hannah Montana.

NAY! A thousand times NAY!

Jesus, it's like cat girls invaded fashion or something.

-- Anun

These would be perfect if you were making a cup of tea with loose leaves, and then realized you needed a strainer. Voila! The answer is on your head.

I had to re-read this several times because I thought you guys had superimposed the ears and I was missing the joke.....apparently the joke is ON them!!!

Hahaha! This is really funny!! It looks drawn-on when they're standing against the white bg.

I guess in editorials and costumes these would look perfectly fine. It's one of those things that when taken out onto the streets, it just looks ridiculous.

YAY! for being ludicrously fab.

They're in Japan. 'Nuff said!!

Maybe when I was 14 as a cutesy thing to annoy the genaric scene of Wal*Mart vs Tommy Hilfiger in my home town. (Back then it was fairy wings though- handmade since that was before the likes of Hot Topic)

Japan is one of the very few places those ears would "work" (and Goth Disneyland) there's been a long-time trend of harajuku and cosplay that would embrace those ears as part of their style ... otherwise damned silly.

YAY! YAY! YAY!
But they have them on backwards. I suppose you only wear them veil forward when attending a backyard, family pet funeral.
Is MK pregnant? She seems to have gained a little bit of weight.

Looking at the one on the left with the small rat ears, I love those sunglasses.

You can get away with this in Tokyo - and *nowhere* else, not even within Japan. But Tokyo? Not unusual at all.

They'll work in Japan. And I bet I see a few at DragonCon. But cons and Japan is where they should stay!

Cute --- but then again, I'm a big old trend whore. Yay? I think I'd like them better if they were a bit more desconstructed. I'd love to see them a little more wilted, bent and mangled.

Thanks for the post though. I'd seen them before and could not for the life of me figure out what the heck they were.

this might work (yes i use the word "might") in... some places in japan. japanese are crazy when it comes to fashion but this can only work in costumes.

so...let's rip it to shreds. NAY!!!

What's next? A lace tail?

NOOOOOO! Dear. God.

Nice try. It's too late for April Fool's.

TLo said... Bound to be come a *titter* trend or bound to be relegated to the fashion dustbin along with the Nehru jacket and the leisure suit? .

It isn't even a fad, it's a fetch, at least Nehru jackets and leisure suits "happened."

Oh crikey. Anything to get attention when you're no longer relevant. Next, I expect fairy wings or perhaps, a nice unicorn horn sprouting from between those bulging eyes.

I can't decide if they look like they're auditioning for the part of Little Edie or Edina Monsoon, but either way, you could not convince me that that designer was not high when he came up with this idea, and these poor pathetic fools (or rather, rich, pathetic fools) don't have the sense to realize how idiotic they look.

This is what happens when you don't have anyone around you who will say 'No' to you.

Marketing Diva

T LO you guys are making this shit up, there is no way they are really wearing lace ears. One of you guys are damn good with PhotoShop

Diana said... I had to re-read this several times because I thought you guys had superimposed the ears and I was missing the joke.....apparently the joke is ON them!!! 8/31/09 11:11 AM

I know, right!

So are they trying to remind us of their glory days as child actresses, or are they too stupid to realize how ridiculous this looks on grown women? Wow, fashion show accessories worn in "real life" - shows how unreal their life is!

The ears definitely look ridiculous, but I am coveting that coat and those shoes on Mary-Kate.

I'm actually going to go ahead and say that I love them. Okay hear me out, they looked like someone doodled on the photographs at first glance, which for me is really witty and interesting.

I saw 2 toddlers wearing fairy wings walking around the mall with their mom yesterday. They looked very sweet, and I am sure they would love this look. But for anyone over age 4, then NO! WTH???

Does anybody know how much these retail for? Or is this one of those things that you get free with your $5000 dress? Because I can't find it on the web, but I'd love to know what they paid for them, if they paid.

MK&A are unique though - they have a lot of these little inside fashion jokes - I don't think either one of them would go out wearing these alone.

This is worse than meggings.

Isabella, get ahold of yourself! NOTHING is worse than meggings!

I give them a pass but only (really... only because they wore these stupid things in Tokyo - land of the hyperfeminized 'CUTE'.

Man. They look both look so short. I don't know if it's the accessories (and shoes) being so large making them look that way or I'm just realizing how kinda short they really are for those accessories.

If there are people out there willing to pay a few hundred bucks for these things, I'm gonna sell my shit in a box and market it as a matching blush.

Frank the bunny's lingerie. Exactly what fashion needs right now.

NAY.

Seriously? What the hell? NAY!

And do these girls ever smile??

The thing that really makes them look the most ridiculous is that they take themselves so seriously. If they looked like young girls having a laugh with this silly accessory, it would actually work. But they are posing as if it is all so serious, (like they always do - like they are being forced to walk the red carpet and pose for the papparazzi), and they have these freaking Brownie Troop craft Halloween ears on their heads. They look like they're about 45, and are treading on Sylvia Miles/ crazy old lady territory.

--GothamTomato

Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha.

Alright, I went to the website and they seem to make hats and headbands. Since I can't imagine trying to come up with new hats for every season I guess this is what you end up with.

Also, there are pictures of people holding squirrels on their heads next to tiny top hats. The model is wearing a tiny top hat on one side of her head and a squirrel on the other.

I see.

You two have lost your frickin' minds, haven't you? (and I don't mean MK and Ashley)

Somehow I feel responsible because it's our loyal minions' voracious appetites for your wit and wisdom that have done this to you. And yet...I can't...stop...hitting the refresh button.

The look like Grizabella. But, they always do.

Maybe they just lose a bet.

--GothamTomato

I think they should absolutely be allowed for anyone who was a child megastar and who has an identical twin.

Seriously, any indication that the Olsens aren't taking themselves too seriously has to be good news, no?

GT asked: "And do these girls ever smile??"

I think they actually ARE smiling in this picture. Make of that what you will.

I don't know when it happened, exactly, but I harbor a bit of a soft spot for the Olsen twins. I think it's because for all their fashion faults they've never strayed into the realm of short, tight, and shiny.

As for the lace ears, I think in the context of this particular event they're cute and appropriate. But if they ever show up in NYC wearing them, then bets are off.

Saw a lot of people wearing these or things like them in Tokyo.

And, in that context—cute!

Make them yourself. You achieve the deconstructed look you want, save $400 bucks and keep last year's tattered pair of lace hosery and a spare dry cleaning wire hanger out of the land fill.

Win-win-win.

Rebecca Romijn, now the Olsen Twins.

When are going to get around to some pics of the Stamos?

Otakon and furry fetishes, yes. High fashion? NAY!!

Linensn'Things

I actually kind of like it with the lace covering the face like in the black and white picture.

I am glad someone brought up Dragoncon and cosplayers. This something that is very japanese in aestethic.

In the context of being at japan it can work, it just doesn't work with what they're wearing. Hell even the editorial photos manage to give it a little bit of viability. And I agree the twin need to exhibit some sense of whimsey for the camera.

Frank

Makes my leopard print Mickey Mouse ears look friggin' cool.

Seriously, will these chicks wear anything?

*snort* Before I opened this one, I thought, "Now what can they possibly say about this? Is there any way TLo won't declare this an out?" Thanks for not disappointing!

I love fashion that's fun. This is not fun. It is stupid.

OUT!!!

NO NO NO here in America, but I see it being big in the Harajuku district in Tokyo, for all those Lolita-goths or whatever...

They don't look like they're made very well, do they? And, yes, at first I thought you photoshopped them in using a black crayon. Brilliant, but nay.

Going against the grain here, I'm going to say IN for these two and in this context ONLY. I'll go even further and say that the girls look great. They both look as if they've bathed and combed their hair recently, their makeup isn't "died last Tuesday and only discovered today" and their clothes actually fit. Yes, the shoes are a bit a clunky and the accessories (hahahahaha) range from twee to bad, but given how these two have looked in the past, this look is quite good.

So, IN but with lots of caveats.

Does anyone know where to get the matching tail?

I swear who ever thought this up is slapping their knee going "Look I got them to wear it!!"

Oh, come on, you're just picking on the ears because they're being worn by the Olsen waifs. Imagine them on, say, Tilda Swinton! You like them now, don't you? *gigglesnort*

Seriously, what the @#$@#?

"Joan said: I'll go even further and say that the girls look great. They both look as if they've bathed and combed their hair recently, their makeup isn't "died last Tuesday and only discovered today" and their clothes actually fit."

Wow. Those are high standards you set.

--GothamTomato

I'm sure these are all over the goth clubs. What more need one say?

All words except one escape me.
RIDICULOUS!

Hahahahahahahahaha! Snort!!

God no.

Did Malvin design that?

I kind of like it, only because the lace makes it looks like someone sketched them on you.

I agree with some of the people here: editorials, costumes, certain countries where crazy fashion is routine (like Tokyo.)

Even though I'll raise my coffee cup to anyone who'd where them around town, just because it's quite a risk. It would be like those people in that Korean street fashion magazine TLO posted a while ago.

If I were the Olson twins, I'd wear more interesting outfits to go with the ears. Or maybe it's supposed to be a balance of crazy/normal. Hmm..

Oh JESUS CHRIST. They look like someone went photoshop-happy and drew them on as a joke. So I'm going with NAY.

I'd look to see someone wearing that to work, and I mean someone who doesn't work for Disney.

I think they're cute :)

I like 'um!

Back in the day I used to wear ears , wigs, wings, and god knows what else on my head. Of course now they would cart me off to the funny farm if I tried it. Well, maybe just once more..

"Anne said...

Good Gawd!!! That website also sell plastic rain hats like my granny used to wear -- for only 71 euros each. I should have remembered what goes around comes around and kept them all instead of pitching into the trash. I would have been a rich woman indeed.

I meant to say:

I'd like to see someone wearing that to work...

These are real. It looked like they were just drawn into the picture.

Weird.

It is impossible to come up with a witty comment about these things, as their mere existence is hilarious all by itself.

Ridiculous.

I seriously just about spit my Diet Coke on the computer screen!!!! I thought it was part of the background too!!

Should have been....

hahahahahahhahahahaha!!

bitchybitchybitchy

BwaahhhhaaahaaaaaaaHaaaaa!!!!

OMG-just the laugh I need to start the week!

GAWD. These are beyond frickin' stupid.

One thing I do like about the ears is that the Olsons both toned down the crazy in their clothes to compensate for the lace bunny/mouse ears. Plus they are quite a fun accessory and perfect for the event at this location.

If the twins had whipped them up with a hot glue gun I'd be totally on board, but as the ears probably cost a ludicrous sum of money from the designer I'm not as keen.

Seriously, how can you leave the house that way? The emperor was not wearing any clothes, but he probably had a pair of these things on!

i swear to god i thought it was a joke, like you guys had photoshopped them. rofl.

I'll do it.

But it'll cost you 295 pounds.

At first I was going to say NAY, but it's the Olsen trainwrecks, so I'm giving them a YEA for making me laugh.

You have GOT to be kidding.

Where they actually IN Japan? Because if so then I'd say "yay" simply because there are some crazy Japanese fashions out there and this is mild by most of them ... and kind of normal. In the states? I say nay ... though I myself wouldn't mind a pair of the "mouse ears" to wear to Bats Day next year.

oh good God. Seriously? If they were still little tots on Full House, I could see it, but they're adults. Supposedly. I forget if the rules are different for celebs.

I'm probably SUCH a nerd that I get a thrill every time I get a personal response from TLo, right? (Either that or I'm SUCH a nerd that I still use the word nerd.)

Did anyone else get $423 when they converted this amount to American dollars? Because the conversion rate right htere on the bottom of my screen is 1.43 - but that can't POSSIBLY be right, can it?

I liked them better when I thought they were something cool the girls picked up from a street vendor - a designer charging over four hundred bucks for this makes it seem like it's a joke on the consumer, which I don't like.

Possibly I should go do some work until the urge to have a serious opinion about someone else's $400 mouse ears passes!

As clothing, they are just silly, so - Nay. Perhaps to top off your Catwoman/Dominatrix costume...

watch me boogie

I wasn't sure how hard to laugh until finding out how much they cost. Almost 300 Euros??? Are you fucking kidding me?

Laughing that hard would actually give me a hernia. I just can't.

It's fine as long as they're in Japan. I bet they were the most normal looking people present.

I got 481, but I'd charge 640 for the sake of inflation.

At least they're cute and well made and don't look like a home craft project.

I don't really mind the ears... Granted no everyday women would wear that now, but I don't find it weird for celebrities to push the limit, especially Mary-Kate and Ashley. NYT did an article on their clothes recently too.

http://tinyurl.com/lzy2uj

HORRIBLE!

With the lack of grace in their faces, who sees the ears?
Those women are starting to look even harder.

Love them! I'm going to make a pair for me this week, maybe I should sell them.

YAY!!!!! WTF????

" bvann said...

Well made? For f***ing $400 they better be.

The fashion world is losing it.

Mariana (The Unoriginal)

YAY if you're 5.

Oh lookie, they're playing dress-up!

First thing that comes to mind:

Little bunny Foo Foo
I don't want to see you
Scooping up the field mice
And bopping them on the head.

They're as offensive as they are ridiculous. Can we stop objectifying women and trying to turn them all into playmates?

It's bad enough that actresses feel they have to pose nude to get attention but now we're going to put rabbit ears on women and call it fashion? What's next, the little white tail? We already have the ankle breaking and painful mile high shoes. SRSLY, why is it so hard for designers to realize that women do not want to look like silly children or sex kittens without a brain and that they need functional, stylish clothes?

GTFO Maison Michel and realize that women are not sexual toys for the amusement of men.

/rant

fashionablylate

Everything's pretty much been said about the ears (I land on the side of "good in Tokyo, but not really anywhere else), but I give the twins a big IN for the rest of their garb, hair and makeup, they look fabulous!

Someone please do a Mitzvah and send this to Kathy Griffin - it would be such a gift!!!

Appropriate for the occasion but I cannot imagine anyone over the age of 10 wearing these and not ridiculous.

" Mia said: First thing that comes to mind:

Little Rabbit Foo Foo!!!!!!!!! Haven't heard that in years. Now I'm thinking about summer camp & campfires & s'mores.

Sigh.

I guess nobody likes fun hats anymore. Somewhere Elsa Schiapelli is crying.

OUT.

They're in Tokyo, so it should work, but their expressions (such as they are) are too dour and not cute enough to pull it off.

It's sort of embarrassing. Like white girls in their beach-braids.

c'mon sewing, these aren't hats :)

I think we have just witnessed the birth of a classic. Like the Kelly bag, the Jackie sheath, the Dior New Look, the lace ears will forever be with us for the wo/man who wants to exude timeless, understated elegance. *snicker*

"I guess nobody likes fun hats anymore. Somewhere Elsa Schiapelli is crying."

Or Philip Treacy.

I simply must have a pair to wear at the reference desk!

ONce upon a time some fashion designer made some clothes for the emperor's twin daughters. No one had the nerve to tell the emperor or the girls that they were only wearing some wire animal ears made out of old cafeteria hair nets.

Maybe some one here will tell them.

Oh so you are joking...I was so worried that you were serious. They make a nice halloween costume along with your favorite lingere but that's about it. NOT FOR REAL LIFE

I was going to whine about "when will the Olson Twins just go away...I am so sick of seeing their pathetic little, unhappy selves in ugly , expensive outfits". But then I realized that without them as comic relief, we would all have missed this lovely group opportunity for cathartic , uproarious laughter !!

Thank you Olson Twins, for bringing the gift of ridiculousness to us all. Now that W is back in Texas, you have big shoes to fill in the way of the role of Village Idiot. Keep up the good work !!!

I don't think these girls would identify irony if it hit them over the head. Instead, silly seems to be their "point of view".

Just think of all the wonderful trends that they can follow up with! Maybe we'll see tin foil jumpsuits or hoop skirts on their shopping trips! At night, these trendy gals might don a pirate eye patch with a stuffed parrot on one shoulder! Dining out at a four star restaurant? Don't forget your combat helmet! Their looks are potentially limitless.

Whisky Tango Foxtrot????

That's a nay for those of you playing the at home game.

i can make that for $5 on my own

And I thought the Marc Jacobs bunny ears were bad...

Although I'm sure the Olsens were just trying to have a bit of fun.

hahahahahahahaha
snort
hahahahahaha
sigh...

really?

I think they're fun. Whimsical, and perfectly acceptable for the context. How does the quote go, "Lighten up, it's just fashion?"

They look so wasted in that photo, it's funny.

Caryn Horyn over at the New York Times is oddly impressed with the Olsens.

She doesn't mention the ears, though.

Karen Smith said it best:
"i'm a mouse. DUH."

Lady GaGa did it first and better.

My fucking god, furries have invaded fashion.

I predict I will see these (or diy versions thereof) on some goth costume queens at the next sf convention I go to. And *there*, it will look good.

Real world? not so much.

*sigh*
Silly things like this make me so glad (nay, grateful) that my great-grandfather got his ass kicked out of Japan over 120 years ago.

Is it me, or are they getting work done around their mouth? The hats? They look like a craft project gone very bad.

No. And for 295 pounds? Definitely. No.

I am in the absolute minority here, but I go with a YAY.

Why? Because that's the biggest collective smile I've ever seen the Olsen twins crack. They look like they know it's completely ridiculous but crack up every time they look at the other one wearing ridiculous ears.

WIll this translate anywhere in mainstream fashion other than anime kids at the mall? Absolutely not. But it's certainly funny. I'm sure Lady Gaga has put in an order for a dozen already.

It's nothing new, does anyone remember the Minnie Mouse ears that Zac Posen showed on the runway a few seasons ago?

Agree w/a few other posters that these would make cute Halloween costumes - sort of Steampunk meets 'sexy kitten.' But I would make them myself w/materials from Michael's and a hot glue gun.

cosmic assiness

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It would be really cute if it was for a costume. Otherwise, it would just make me do a double take and maybe a "Wait - what's that on your head?"

Well, they ARE in Tokyo. It's not exactly unseen there.

Quite honestly, I love them. I am also a 16 year old otaku, though, so my opinion is a teensy minority one. And they'd be really difficult to pair with anything.

i'm not dorothy gale

Trick or treat!

Um.... DON'T KILL ME, but they're in Japan, and if anyone can look cute with those, it's the Olsens (MaryKate with the round glasses, c'mon... kind of adorable), so I say free pass and rock it. At least they have a sense of humor, and with all the oversized hobo goodness on the former Crack Queen, and the tailored-to-death "grown up" looks on the Priss, I'm loving this side of them.

Look at the shoes!

I think they're a pretty embellishment for an editorial shoot/runway show/Halloween, but look absolutely ridiculous in all other situations.

I like it. But then again, I'm weird.

"Make them yourself. You achieve the deconstructed look you want, save $400 bucks and keep last year's tattered pair of lace hosery and a spare dry cleaning wire hanger out of the land fill."

^^I may have to do that as I simultaneously am a DIY freak.

Hahahahhahaaaa

Yeaaah, the ears are stupid. I DO however like how in the photograph of the larger ears it's kinda like a lace veil/cap. I think that's very pretty and I would love to photograph someone wearing it, but I don't think it has any practical value.

Oh hell nay! They're whimsical and funny and all that but in the end they're ridiculous. But I can't believe they're sold out! For $422 a pop! Maybe they only made two sets and the Olsens' bought them.

it starts with an n.
seriously, wtf?

They look like extremely stylish furries. Always a no-no.

I guess the farmer's wife got the third blind mouse. She should put these out of their misery as well.

LOL man in Japan I can actually see those catching on... because well Japan has some stranger stuff then that in their fashion sub-genres... for real =.= Even though I am a fan of the odd as far as fashion goes, I'm calling this one a Nay... but the six year old girl in me wants a pair...

seriously? okay we get it, they're funning the paps

Dear TLo, please comment on Tyra's look at the daytime emmy's. Best makeup she's had in a minute

They look like a couple of dumbasses.

I clicked on the link and thought

What the Hell??????

On second thought my 7 yr old would love them.

Aw, I adore them. I little bit of levity never killed anyone.

The serious we're too cool for school looks on their faces make the lace ears just look all the more dumb on the 2 of them. The idea of them is to be silly and fun, and they're wearing a non serious item like they're carrying a Birkin bag or something. Lighten up, silly girls.

So these girls have a sense of humor. More power to them.

The ears might look nice with a lacy dress--Ashley is on the right track with that. Uh, no, just kidding. Well, maybe in Japan.

Mary-Kate's outfit is one of the best things I've seen her wear in a long time. She looks great. (Other than the ears.)

I liked the D+G fall 09 collection very much.
I did not know that, about the resurrection of Schiaparelli for '10. I'll reserve my judgement until I see what they do.

I think they're just having fun. If I knew that the fashion press was chronicling my every move, I would be tempted to provoke them with occasional bits of insanity too.

ToddNY
8/31/09 12:03 PM Did Malvin design that?

Well they were in lace not burlap, so I doubt it.

When did the one on the left become Sharon Stone???

No - a big big no. I have a strong dislike of clothing for adult women that looks childish (e.g. bunny ears, Hello Kitty themes, rubber rainboots with ducks, rompers, etc.). No adult woman should wear any of these things.

And a big yuck to Ashley (I think - the one of the right) and her fug dress with boob ruffles and weird Granny lace and such. Its hard to see the details in the photo but the dress looks pretty bad. Maybe worse than the ears, even.

Whateverrr, they're silly and I like them. (I am also young enough where I am allowed such dumb frivilousity.)

Dude even for a otaku like me those ears are simply stupid. they are the cheapest looking ears I have ever seen. u can wear cooler cat or bunny or teddy bear ears for a better price.

formerlyAnon

Yay or Nay?

You bother to ask??

Nay

Except, maybe, tweens & early teens - the same ones wearing Hello Kitty paraphenalia, not ironically.

HELL NAY.
honestly, what the fuck.

Definate YAY! Where can I buy these? I cannot wait to wear them to the office

If you are in the mood to review something even funnier, you should check out "Winkers" at winkersdesign.com. Basically they are tight pants with eyes and other designs strategically situated on the ass so that the eyes appear to wink as they are sucked into the space between the ass and the legs. HAHHAHAHAAHAHAH!

I figure they're rich enough and famous enough that they say, "Oh HELL yeah I"ll wear bunnie/mouse ears" and giggle and enjoy. The Fug Girls had the best take on it:

"like two tragic Playboy bunnies who're going through some kind of tiresome art school phase where they lounge around the mansion reading Anais Nin and smoking cloves and talking about how their work as centerfolds is really just a post-modern reclamation of the male gaze and telling Hef not to be such a phallocentrist perv."
