T Lo Interviews Uli, Uli, Uli

So flabbergasted were we at Uli's fate in the All-Star challenge that we did what we do best: used our connections to score an interview. See, we haven't actually spoken to Uli face to face since the time we shared a limo with her, Laura and Peter (and the hot Russian driver we still haven't forgotten) on the way to the opening of Malan's store. So we called up Laura the day after the All-Star challenge aired and we were all, "Get us Uli, bitch!" And she was all, "Yow! You homos are scary! Let me give her a call. She's on a shoot but I'll have her call you tonight! Just please, don't hurt my children!" And thus it came to pass.

Hi Uli, it's so nice to talk to you again, it’s been ages. What have you been doing since Season 3?
First of all, I was hiding for two years, I couldn’t take all the attention, I was pretty shy back then, and then a year ago I started coming out of my hole doing some appearances. I started doing a TV show called It’s Very Uli and it’s been running on Plum TV. Plus, if I wasn’t on a photo shoot working for other people as a stylist, I was making clothes basically every day.

So you've been working as a stylist?
Yes, that’s part of my income. I’ve been doing this for over ten years, you know, I like it a lot. I have no husband, no boyfriend, no nothing and my family is all in Germany. So that’s basically my family, the photographers, the models, it’s always the same group of people you work with shooting at different locations. So that’s it, I do styling and the rest of the time I design and I’m pretty happy with it.

You always told us you love your life in Miami.
I do love my life in Miami but people don’t take you very seriously if you are a designer out of Miami and I have a hard time to get things going in Miami. Things are much slower, you have to kick your ass every morning to get out of bed and do things.

Most people I know are very rich and they don’t have to work or they work at night at nightclubs and stuff. When you’re in New York you have such a different energy and I kind of miss that a little. I’m still thinking of moving to New York. I actually got a place there but it was during winter and I never really made it up there.

You’ve been selling your dresses in a couple of stores, right [Check "where to buy" on her site]?
Yes, mostly in Miami, Los Angeles and San Diego and also Dubai. Mostly places with high-end clients in a warm climate. You know, I make a lot of party, summer dresses, a lot of resort wear, that’s what I’ve been doing for the last three years.

How did you get to sell your clothes in Dubai?
My best friend moved to Dubai and I went there to visit her and I checked a couple of stores, including a store called Etoile, and that's where I sell my clothes. I thought since it is always hot in Dubai my clothes would fit perfectly in and there’s a lot of people with money to spend. See, when you do a small collection, you have to make it expensive, you need money to make an inexpensive collection and I don’t have money to go to China and have it produced. I don’t have the back-up you need for that.

You need money to make money.
Exactly, and people sometimes complain that things are expensive, but I make my clothes in Miami and in New York and I pay the people very well, I don’t buy fabrics in bulk from China, I always use great-quality fabrics usually from Europe. It usually costs me $200 just to make the piece, I sell it for $400 and the stores, of course, sell it from $900-1,200. It’s not like I’m getting rich selling these dresses. It ends up being expensive at the store, but that’s the way it is right now, I can’t help it.

Moving to the All-stars Challenge, were you excited when they contacted you and invited you to be part of the challenge?
I was very excited, but I almost couldn’t do it because of a styling job I had already scheduled and that’s pretty much what has happened in the last three years. The reason why you haven’t seen my face anywhere is because I’ve been busy working as a stylist, I could never attend anything or Fashion Week or anything. So, I was really happy that I could do this, show my face again.

How was shooting the All-Star Challenge? Was it fun?
The whole thing was so much fun and it comes across as if we don’t like each other, which is total BS, we all had so much fun with each other. There was really no bullying going on, they just made it look like there was.

They put comments in certain places where nobody had made that comment. We knew when the challenge was set that no one was going to get eliminated. OK, yes, one person was going to win, but we all got to show our pieces. That stress level wasn’t there, there was really no fighting. I mean, I was laughing my ass off the whole day with Santino. And I love Sweet P, there was really nothing going on between us, they just tried to instigate things. It looked like we didn’t have fun, but we had a blast.

We noticed that you wearing beautiful necklaces throughout the challenge and one of them looked like a piece from Korto's collection.
Yes, the purple one was Korto's, the other ones were mine. I'm also designing jewelry like the ones you saw me wearing on the show.

Were you surprised when they added the restaurant twist?
I was shocked because sometimes I tend to be an airhead. I kind of forgot they do things like that, but yeah, I was shocked. I was happily shocked because I wasn’t quite done with my look and I was hoping for something unconventional. In the back of my head I was always thinking "OK, what are they going to come up with this time?" There’s always the car challenge, the grocery store…you know, make clothes out of something you wouldn’t normally do.

Your collection was gorgeous. It was nice to see a different side of Uli with no use of prints. What made you decide to drop prints altogether?
When I went back, I felt that if was going to have a chance of winning, I could not do something with prints again. Well, turned out I didn’t win anyway, they didn’t really say anything negative about my collection, as a matter of fact, they said nothing about what I actually made, they only talked about what I didn’t make, but I swear, I’m so sure that if I had made anything with prints I would have been ripped apart.

Three years later I have evolved, yes, I still use prints, but now I use a lot of solid fabrics for my designs, more sophisticated things, stuff that you can wear for a longer period of time, you get more use out of it.

Everything was really beautiful. We love all the details in every piece. We felt it showed growth from your part.
Thank you. You know, before, I have to admit I made the same freaking dress over and over again, you know, shorter, longer, but it was always the same dress in a different print and that made it look different and I was shocked that I made it until the end. The prints made all the impact. I made so many different things in the last three years and I wanted to show them all that; what I can make, what I’m actually into. Right now, I’m not even into prints that much. Right now, I’ve been making more sophisticated, detailed clothes.

First they tell you to get away from print and now they miss your prints.
When that came out of Heidi’s mouth I couldn’t not believe it, I said to myself, “Are you serious?” Actually you didn’t see it, but they all said the same thing, “Oh, we miss your prints, we love your prints,” “Where’s your Miami spirit?” I was like, “Are you guys kidding me? That’s what made me lose the prize the first time!"

They always mentioned my overuse of prints, and you know what, they were right. I watched the season again and they were right, I used too many prints, but that’s because at the time I was afraid to do something else. I also feel that I showed them at Bryant Park that I can do something else. Yes, most of my customers love my prints, but I do other things too. No, I was like on the floor when they basically told me I was at the bottom. I was devastated. I was like, ‘OK, maybe I lost all sense of fashion.” Yeah, I was floored. I didn’t want to stand there saying, “Oh, I’m so great.” But I really didn’t expect that. I thought that I’d be definitely at the top for sure.

Our favorite piece was the restaurant one. What did you use for that?
I used a fabric that was kind of like a net that was the curtain in a nude color and I used that as my base and then I cut hundreds of strips of stuff that I found, like the placemats, that silver fabric, double duct tape and I wove all these different thing through the net to create basically a fabric. It looks like one fabric, but that’s a combination of probably eight different things. At the bottom, I added a fringe that was hanging in the restaurant. Plus some of the fabric I had originally purchased at the store.

We thought for sure that you were going to be top four. We had no doubt. We could not believe when they sent you back in.
Thank you. I was really shocked. You know, first they make you and then they break you. I hope that doesn’t affect my sales [laughs]. A lot of people go by what the judges say. I don’t want to go out on the street and have someone stop me and say, “You should’ve used some print.” I don’t want to hear that [laughs].

So, what’s next for the German bombshell?
I’m going to continue doing my styling, I love it. Right now I’m on a beautiful lake in New Hampshire, with beautiful models. It’s something I do really well and really enjoy. When it comes to my designs, you know, I can’t really do it by myself. I gave up styling once to just focus on designing and it didn’t work.

I really need somebody to come and finance my collections because I’m a crappy business person, I have no business sense and until that happens I’m just going to keep it small and exclusive. I just got an offer to make Olympic ice-skating costumes, you know, stuff like that comes in every now and then and I do that and it’s exciting. I’m happy, I’m not rich, but I do what I love to do every day.

Uli, you are a treasure.

Uli,

There are quite a few of us here who think that you were the real winner in the All-Star Challenge. Your restaurant dress was fabulous and it worked so well with the rest of your collection!

here's hoping you find your financier soon so that your beautiful work can reach more women!

srq

OK, among all of us posting here, someone must have connections to a potential financial backer for Uli, right? Such a shame that she can only create one piece at a time and that most of us will never have access to wearing an "Uli".

First I think she is great, seems like a nice person, and I wish her well. Her clothes are lovely.

Now for the little criticism - in the second pic the seam is in the wrong place It is a pet peeve when they make those seams that run across the breast - and that part is too short.

It is a shame that she doesn't have the proper financing b/c I think she has made some of the most beautiful and wearable dresses to come out of Project Runway. I get that she is trying to get away from prints and show that she can do something else, but if I was rich and going on vacation in the tropics, she would be the first person I would call. Good luck, Uli!

Uli's style and personality have made her one of the best contestants to ever come through the show. Easily my favorite designer. How she didn't win All-Stars is...inexplicable.

Glad to see she's still the wonderful little German girl we fell for 3 years ago.

DAMN STRAIGHT! judges were on crack at the all-stars. uli should have have been at least top 4 with that kind of work.

Uli is not only a treasure but incredibly down to earth. I get why she didn't get that big, its part of her "don't do things big" spirit, she's not the kind of gal to have a big workshop etc.,

"Uli said: I just got an offer to make Olympic ice-skating costumes"

Ooooh, I'd love to know which skater!

And great interview guys (as always).

"Uli said: I really need somebody to come and finance my collections because I’m a crappy business person, I have no business sense and until that happens I’m just going to keep it small and exclusive."

Being a crappy business person is the story of just about every artist (in every medium) there is.

Uli,

I love your beautiful spirit and stunning designs.
You should move to Australia - we have the perfect weather to wear your dresses and many of us can afford to buy them! :) Please?

Uli, has such a great attitude. I wish I could see things like she does.

I thought her collectin was beautiful.

Marketing Diva

I agree with the boys Uli should have been in the Top four. I thought Sweet P collection was a joke. I pray that you get more exposure and better deals.

I wasn't a big fan of Uli's until the All-Star Show, and since reading her interview, I am now a bona-fide fan!!
Her collection for All Stars was beautiful and did not at all deserve to be in the bottom four.
I REALLY hope that she gets the financial backing she needs.
Here's to much success for Uli!!!!!

LOVE HER!!!!

Awesome interview, guys. Thank you so much for this. She was ROBBED!

I still can't believe she wasn't even top four. What the hell were they thinking. What a disappointment!

Uli is a sweetheart! I hope she can find someone to finance her designs. She's so talented.

What a delightful interview! If I had the bucks I'd definitely back Uli - and Jillian too. I'd love to have access to their beautiful clothes on an ongoing basis.

How interesting to find out that she created the "fabric" for her restaurant dress. Amazing. Not to beat a dead horse but again, the fraulein should have won twice - in her season and the all stars.

TLo, can you give us the names of the boutiues in Miami and San Diego that carry Uli's clothes? Does she sell anything online?

I love the interview, I can almost hear her voice reading it. Uli, you rock!

We're working on that.

Oh Guys, I'm so happy you got to talk with Uli. She has lovely style and grace.

She provides some interesting insight in this interview, too. I loved her Bryant Park show and like many I thought she was a contender for All-Stars win. But much has been said on that topic, right?

Best of luck to Uli! She's a lucky woman getting to do what she loves to do every day.

Uli you were robbed and you truly are a dear. I wish I could afford your designs because as a Floridian I can really appreciate warmer-wear.

Best of luck to Uli. She's a doll.

Not to belabor things, but this interview helps shed some light on the whole thing with Korto: Uli & Korto are two people who've been designing for years, working hard in relative obscurity to take it to the next level. For them, that prize money would have made a very real difference; they need money to grow their businesses, plain and simple. I think Daniel's situation is quite different. I absolutely believe Uli & Korto about the degree of friendship and fun we didn't get to see because of editing. At the same time, if getting that close to the money and seeing it go in a different direction was frustrating, who could blame them?

Uli, I admire your work and loved the collection for All Stars. We were sure you were the winner when we watched the show.

You come across as unflappable and - I have to say - dignified (not a small feat on a competitive show like PR). And you seem genuinely good natured. What a gift.

You have created some truly memorable pieces.

Best of luck!

God, I love her even more now.

Uli, you're the best!!! Best wishes to you!!!

I've always loved her designs, print or no print, she makes women look sexy. Thanks for the interview, guys.

It's really a shame that people like Uli can't find proper financing, she's so talented. That goes to show you that talent isn't everything.

Ask - the seams aren't put in the wrong place by the manufacturer, the dresses are worn by the wrong people! If your boobs are too big for the bust of the dress don't wear it!

I loved Uli's collection too and I was certain she would win. I feel so bad for her, she did what they asked and they turned around and said they didn't want that.

And another thing - why do the producers of PR think we only want to see fighting?

Very annoying.

You're doomed if you do and doomed if you don't. Good luck to you, Uli!

Awesome Uli! I wish you the best of luck in all your endeavors. Thanks for the interview, TLo.

thanks for the interview boys. i tell ya they sure can edit someone to look so damn bitching (which i thought they did to Uli)when it wasnt even the case.

much success to you Uli!

Love her. She is the epitome of what I consider a strong woman.

And, oh yeah, she was robbed. Her restaurant dress was the most fashion forward of the show.

Love Uli!

LaFemmeFataledeNY

What a nice surprise! Thank you so much for this interview, guys!!

Mariana (The Unoriginal)

Uli has always been one of my favorite designers on the show. I'm glad she's happy even if not as successful as she wishes she was.

Susan ID said, "And another thing - why do the producers of PR think we only want to see fighting? "

You know, I don't think they do. The first episode of the new PR was a breath of fresh air after TFS, which indeed was edited as a snarkfest. Perhaps the PR all-star show did list a little more in that direction, but historically I don't think that's been a PR trademark.

Uli,

Du bist das Beste!!!

wonderful! Love hearing from the designers and I've always liked Uli

I haven't seen the all star special yet, but just based on what you've posted so far, I would have given the win to Uli. The judges were definitely smoking crack and wearing blindfolds.

Uli,

In my opinion, you were the real winner of the All-Star Challenge! Your designs are beautiful; I can only dream of wearing your dresses, but if I could afford them I'd buy them all.

But even more importantly, you survive these ridiculous "reality" shows with what can only be called ladylike grace and humor.

Have a wonderful career and a happy life!

Love, love, love Uli!

The whole thing was so much fun and it comes across as if we don’t like each other, which is total BS, we all had so much fun with each other. There was really no bullying going on, they just made it look like there was.

Uli's reiterating what I've heard innumerable times about reality shows. What happens during filming gets twisted into whatever the editors want to imply. "Reality", my ass.

I wish I could afford her clothes. I would have a closet full.

The judges might have been on crack, but Uli's fans know better. She's the best. I hope she can find some steady financing.

Thanks for the interview, boys.

I love Uli...

She's a peach. I loved the giraffe printed dress that she wore during the show.
I think years ago there use to be some garment production/fashion industry in the Miami area. Resort type clothing, like Lily Pulitzer. Everything is so big and homogenized now. It makes it extremely hard for regional creativity.

Thanks TLo! I adore Uli, and I don't know any woman would wouldn't wear her clothes. Everyone just gushes over them.

I love her clothes, love her attitude, I really hope she can find a backer.

Uli is so down to earth and honest. I love that about her. She wasn't my favorite on Season 3, but I loved all her things on the All Star Challenge. I don't know her at all but I wish her all the best!

Jlo
Ask - the seams aren't put in the wrong place by the manufacturer, the dresses are worn by the wrong people! If your boobs are too big for the bust of the dress don't wear it!

I agree that this can often be the case, but go back and look at the second picture. It looks like no adult woman could wear that dress properly.
Ironically most of the baby doll dresses that the PR designers have done would have the same issue.

As far as I'm concerned, Uli, you were the winner and the judges need to put down the crack pipe. You made a beautiful collection, and if I had the money, I'd back you myself!

Uli is a winner in all senses of the word. Too bad the judges couldn't see that. She should have had the actual win and the $100,000.

Love Uli. It's no surprise that the show was edited to imply that there was tension among the designers. That is why I will NEVER be on a reality show, EVER. Rock on, Uli. Your stuff is gorgeous.

Stay true to yourself, Uli, we love you!

After watching Uli's season of PR, I wanted one of her printed Ulidresses so badly... and I didn't even live in Florida then! Yes, all of her dresses were similar in style, but it's a beautiful, flattering style that can be worn by all types of women. I really expected that she'd either get picked up as a designer for a company that already does a lot of resortwear, or that she'd be approached by a backer to start her own line. More than anyone else I've ever seen on the show, I thought she could be a major commercial success selling reasonably-priced but gorgeous RTW dresses.

I liked her collection for All-Stars, but it didn't inspire the same kind of acquisitive lust in me as her printed dresses. Damn, but I still want one of those dresses!

Uli love!! Thanks for the interview, TLo. She is so refreshingly honest about her own talents and capabilities, though I think she seriously undersells herself. I hope some angel financing comes her way soon because she deserves success.

We just got off the phone with Uli - By the way, she said to thank you guys for all the lovely comments - and she pointed us to her site. It has all the stores listed. Hope that helps.

XO

Uli,
You are the most down-to-earth humble person I have ever had the pleasure to observe. And then add to that your awesome talent and lack of bitterness over defeats that frankly many of us feel were undeserved and unfair and all I can say is....WOW!

You knock my socks off. Your fashions knock my socks off. Your spirit, inventiveness, playfulness, practicality, work ethic, humanity, fashion genius, fabulous eye for style and taste and originality....well as you see I could go on and on. Been watching for a long time. Maybe I'm a little Uli Looney. lol.

People like you, Uli, always win in the end. Or maybe you already have.

Keep on doing what you do. You ARE a treasure.

Gee I like her work and think most of it is very pretty - but
Summer Yes, all of her dresses were similar in style, but it's a beautiful, flattering style that can be worn by all types of women.

EXCEPT any woman who needs a bra. Go to her web site and refresh your memory. Again, pretty stuff but it all is strapless, backless or cut to the navel.

Great interview!

The judges were monstrously unfair to insist that Uli remain frozen in time with her prints, rather than recognize the spectacular growth she showed in her All-Star collection. What's with imposing an ex post facto condition on Uli and nobody else? Nobody else was required to show prints as a condition of succeeding, dammit. Uli produced absolutely stunning clothes - the judges should have been judging THEM. She definitely got hosed.

Also, Uli's interview stunningly disclosed that she and Santino were laughing their asses off the whole time. How annoying that we didn't get to see the full picture. Santino was edited to look like a nutcase who repeatedly cackled out loud for no discernable reason other than to hog the camera - now Uli tells us that was actually part of hilarious back-and-forth banter and high times. What? He was doing a lot more than just being obnoxious? Fer cryin' out loud, would it have killed the editors to include some of that happy back-and-forth rather than editing the show for manufactured drama, weird behavior, and carping?

Good luck to you, Uli. Your clothes are amazing.

LifeTimeForHomos

Thank you, guys, great interview! Nice way to start my day.

I cracked up at the part about how Uli never made it to NYC, Kors' sing-songy, "I love ze hawt vedder" stated playing in my head.

T and Lo, if you don't mind asking, and Uli does not mind answering, I have two questions:

Where can we see examples of her styling work, i.e., what magazines, other publications, commercials, etc. does her work appear?

What feedback did DVF give her regarding her collection?

Thank you.

She's awesome, I'd love to hang out with her and talk about the weather, literally.

Quite frankly, I didn't expect her to win, but not even top four? That was ridiculous.

Thank you for this interview, guys. It does clarify a lot of things about her "disappearance" and editing on the show. I wish her good luck!

Oops, I see that I did not catch you before you called her.

Seriously. TLo has a lot of readers, who knows? Maybe a backer will read this interview.

Lovely. Thank you, TLo.

I love Uli. How can one not? Thanks for the great interview!

She seems such a lovely, self-aware person.

Thanks for the interview.

Thanks for the info on where to find her clothes, TLo, and thanks for going the extra mile for your devoted readers!

"Mouseanony said: Santino was edited to look like a nutcase who repeatedly cackled out loud for no discernable reason other than to hog the camera"

That wasn't just editing. If you'll recall what Tim Gunn said in an interview; he found him intolerable.

bitchybitchybitchy

TLo, thanks for another great interview, and Uli is a peach!

Her comments about the filming and editing really say a lot about what the producers wanted to see, and their manipulation to get the faux drama they wanted.

In any event, I loved seeing Uli again, and love her clothes-if I were svelte and wealthy, I'd buy her clothes in a heartbeat.

And to second KlausK,

Uli, du bist die beste!

ULI ULI ULI!

I'm glad you realize how ROBBED you were. I wish you the best, and can't wait to see all the success that will definitely come your way!

GT That wasn't just editing. If you'll recall what Tim Gunn said in an interview; he found him intolerable.

No disrespect to the inimitable (sp?) Tim Gunn, but just his opinion is just his opinion. Tim disliked Stella and I never got the impression that he was a fan of Chris either. While I am not a fan of Santino, there are plenty of other people who are fans of others that I whom I disagree with. People ARE allowed to have their own opinions GT!

If Uli enjoyed Santino's antics, good for her, but that doesn't mean he was edited to look bad. All of his asshole behavior was right there on the screen to anyone who had two eyes. It wasn't like a bunch of sound bites and facial expressions linked together to form a story. It was shot after shot of him being loud, obnoxious, and insulting.

Thank You guys for this much needed interview. Uli just makes such pretty & sophisticated clothes, and most of all, clothes that make people happy:)

Uli, if I win the lottery I will be your financial backer! The only condition will be that you have to make my entire wardrobe!

"...but I swear, I’m so sure that if I had made anything with prints I would have been ripped apart."

You know that's true too.

I don't doubt that Santino was obnoxious -- his overdoing the whole playing to the camera thing was incredibly irritating. But it would have been nice to see some of the funny stuff, too. If he had Uli in stitches this time around, at least some of what he was saying had to be good.

Uli, just keep being yourself and you'll have success because you demonstrate over and over again, that no matter what the judges say or how you are edited, that you are a woman with talent and class.

It may be too late in the day to catch you back BB. Sadly, I had to get some billable time in today! Even tho I'd happily read all day.

I agree, PR is a breath of fresh air (especially compared to TFS). Tim Gunn said in his interview that PR was basically a feel good show and they like to support their designers, etc.

I was responding to Uli saying that there was a lot of humorous back and forth during the filming and we didn't see any of that. Why did they cut that out? I haven't had a chance to rewatch it, but it seemed like the designers were shown in the work room working doggedly with barely a smile. (Santino's looniness excepted)

So, in hopes that someone who makes PR reads this comment . . . I love seeing the designers interact in friendly, humorous ways as well as competitively. I watch PR to see how these creative people meet the challenges put to them AND I get hooked on the story. But commaraderie is also compelling viewing.

Reading Uli's interview makes me believe Korto's story even more. I'm not sure what exactly was going on with the All Star Challenge, but it appears that there was obviously a plan to give Daniel the win and give Sweet Pea and Chris redemption arcs. I think the edits Korto and Uli reeives were just to amp up the drama.

I’m happy, I’m not rich, but I do what I love to do every day.

That's the secret to a good -- no, great -- life. I'm glad Uli's found it!

ASK said,
"EXCEPT any woman who needs a bra. Go to her web site and refresh your memory. Again, pretty stuff but it all is strapless, backless or cut to the navel."

They make bras for all of those instances. I wear a 46 DD and I have both a strapless and backless bras.

Uli, if you're reading this, I just want to let you know that I love your clothes and will definitely check one of the stores in LA. Thanks for the great interview, TLO!

MyFawny - I was not looking for a fight.
But I'd love example/links to those bras. I went to her site yet again - even the backless were very low cut. I am open to new options but as a 42DD I've never seen a larger size bra that would work for her clothes. (other than the silver l/s mini) Examples?

MyFawny typed:

They make bras for all of those instances. I wear a 46 DD and I have both a strapless and backless bras.

Care to share some brands? I'm a 42DDD (according to Lane Bryant) and I'm always on the look out for some decent alternatives - especially for bras to wear with backless/strapess outfits.

Crack-smoking judges. All of Uli's designs looked perfectly executed and beautiful, and she has evolved from her season into a wonderful designer. Her palette was a little muted but I thought it was very beautiful and wearable. Sweet Pea's color palette was similar and she was rewarded for it, although neither her designs nor execution were comparable to Uli's. I dare the judges to explain themselves.

I thought for sure that Uli would win and was so disappointed that she didn't even make the top 4. I really didn't like Daniel's collection or styling. Uli and Korto had the best designs by far.

Being a crappy business person is the story of just about every artist (in every medium) there is.

Being a crappy business person is true about all professions even MBAs.

Brooklyn Bomber:
You know, I don't think they do. The first episode of the new PR was a breath of fresh air after TFS, which indeed was edited as a snarkfest.

Wrong comparison. Compare the Top Chef alumni competitions with regular Top Chefs. The alumni competitions are way more collegial.

And Top Chef Masters was a veritable love fest.

Would we ever get a Project Runway Masters? Wouldn't you love to see Isaac Mizrahi and Michael Kors arm wrestle over the serger and talk smack about each other? Imagine what Donna Karan looks like first think in the morning, stumbling out of bed to make a couture dress in three days! Heatherette 1 vs. Heatherette 2! The mind reels.

Uli was totally screwed! Thanks, Tlo, love your interviews!

Great interview! Lovely to hear what Uli has to say.

The more I think about it, the less I like the All-Stars show. It seems so fake, moreso than the average reality TV show. All the best to Uli in real life.

I was surprised Uli didn't make the final four, her collection was beautiful. I don't know what the judges were thinking.

Uli is awesome and have been her fan for many years, thank you so much for this interview, Tom and Lorenzo.

Love her!

Thanks for the interview TLo!

Aww, we love you, Uli! I thought your All Star collection was the best; as soon as I saw it come down the runway I was positive that you would be the winner. Of course, I also thought your Bryant Park collection was the best, but that was a little while ago. Crap. Maybe I should stop predicting the winner and then the people that I want will win (then again, I knew that Christian and Leanne would win).

Anyway, I wish you had a way to sell your clothes directly -- but I guess you'd need a backer for that. Then you could charge a little more and make a little more money, but nonetheless, your customers would be paying nearly half of what they do now anyway. A win-win situation for everyone!

I'm glad to see you're doing well and I hope that we get to hear more from you! :)

First, thanks to fabulous Laura for helping coordinate the interview with Uli - two ladies with amazing talent, and isn't it wonderful that TLo can bring them to us?

As a wearable art designer I loved reading about the technique Uli used for her restaurant dress. She is a delight with her sunny personality and I hope she can find a financial backer so all of us can have the opportunity to wear her designs.

Thanks for the interview, guys!

Uli, good luck in all that you do! You're awesome. I wish I had money, because I would finance your collection; your clothes are stunning!

Uli, when they sent you off the stage, I could have just turned off the tv. You should have won. Your collection was gorgeous!

Aw Uli. She's so sweet. Thank you so much for this interview as this is the Uli I remember from S3. Also, her collection did not need prints.

Thanks for this, boys! Uli, I hope you read our comments, because I couldn't believe you didn't win the first time around, and I thought your work for the all-star challenge was phenomenal.

When I saw Daniel's collection, I thought he would take the win, because it was very up-to-date, simple, and focused. But I thought for sure it was between your collection and his. Your designs were more complicated and innovative than anyone's, I thought, and I understand the difficulty of updating your style and staying true to who you are as a designer.

Like the Rungay boys, I wanted to throw things at my screen when you were sent away in the bottom four. I want almost every piece of clothing I've ever seen you make. You're the best!

And being from Miami, it is hard for me to believe you can't find a financial backer. Ugh.

Like everyone else - I wish I could back you.
More than any other designer - your
designs are for ladies who really love life!
All the very best to you and yes - once again - that's twice now you should have won!!!

Someone get Uli a financial backer!!!

C'mon, kiddoes. The world needs more Uli.

How much do you need Uli???

I LOOOOOVE fashion and I've always wanted to start a line... but I don't design :P

I'm not offering to do so, don't ge me wrong! I'm just curious as to how much is a lot... A million? A trillion? What?

Also, is any body going to mention Michael (aka "Mychael") Knight?

When did he turn into Steve Urkel????

Uli, I was so glad you were in the All-Star Challenge. You're my all-time favorite PR contestant and was upset that you didn't at least make it to the final four. Doesn't matter because you're still a fierce designer. I have to tell you that your final collection at Bryant Park was absolutely beautiful; it was like I was watching a beautifully choreographed dance. Don't worry you'll get a financier real soon. Just be yourself and stay happy.

~Sewjourner (who christined her sewing machine Uli)

If Daniel had made Uli's collection, the judges would have fapped themselves silly over it and given him the win.

Uli, you should have won!!!

What kind of crazy world are we living in when a woman this fabulous can't get financial backing?

Or a boyfriend?

That's almost as nutty as the judges.

It kills me that that style-free Johnny idiot from TFS has a backer and Uli does not. Pas juste!

The show trying to contrive drama is appalling to me. I know its a reality show but don't they realize the fans primarily just want to see great clothes? I know I do.

Anyway, Uli I'm still a fan, and in fact more so after this interview. Thanks TLo for tracking her down. You guys are the best!

Uli,
you're a breath of fresh air. It appears that life to you is always a glass more full than empty. What a blessing to be doing what you love, every day.

Your clothes are so beautiful and feminine and flattering. I hope you find that backer soon that you so richly deserve. And a boy friend too! cause he will be one lucky dude!

And I still love your prints! But this mini collection was gorge! Here's to continued success, on your terms.

mll

Uli - You absolutely won that challenge.

I would love to own your designs. I hope someone finances you because it is a travesty that your designs are not easy available to the world!

Uli, your dress made from restaurant materials was absolutely beautiful. It was original, outstanding, amazing, a triumph of creativity. Please never stop believing in yourself. You have a very special talent.
~Lina :)

Uli rocks! Her collection in the All-Star Challenge was absolutely stunning - she should have won, hands down, not even close! TLo, thanks for making it a point to talk to her because now the message is out there that this talented designer needs financial backing! Uli's work is so beloved by so many women it would be a slam-dunk to widen the reach of her creations - trust me, I'd buy virtually everything she makes, and I'm in very good company.

Uli looked great. Her collection looked great and was gracious when she lost a second time undeserveredly.

Uli should be very proud. If I had the money I would absolutely invest in her business.

I hope Korto reads this interview and has enough sense to feel some embarassment. I always felt Korto was very fortunate to be in the same season as Kenley. It helped hide her poor attitude and raging ego. She should send a a Xmas card to Kenley every year.

Uli is the best. Ich liebe Uli! I want her clothes, but I am just a poor architecture student. Hang in there Uli. One day soon, I will get your dress. Oh, and I can't wait to check out what you have in San Diego, since I live here!
