Shelley O's Shorts

Labels:
It's important!

We're behind the curve on this one but we keep getting so many emails about it and we wanted to take a break before we go all in on the Project Runway craziness, so here it is: Michelle Obama dressing like every other woman her age on vacation with her kids in Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona.

The media, because they haven't completely destroyed their own reputation in the eyes of the American people yet, have spent days and meters of column inches discussing whether or not this is "appropriate" for a First Lady. Seriously, the Today Show devotes almost 5 full minutes to the discussion:

And concludes that it's not a big deal and no one seems to care. Uh...okay. Thanks for that, gateways to information.

No, they're not a great-looking pair of shorts, nor are they all that flattering, but SHE'S A MOM ON VACATION WITH HER KIDS IN 100+ DEGREE WEATHER, PEOPLE. Get a grip. The media's acting like she showed up at a state dinner in this getup.

Thankfully, there's so little else to report on in this unprecedented time of peace and prosperity and unity that the media can devote all their resources to this pressing issue.

You've said it all, and pithily, gentlemen.

Carry on!

All the best (and so excited about tonight!),

Agreed.

This certainly is a mountain out of a molehill.

Now let's get back to Project Runway!

I can't add a thing here. Well said.

They could definitely find something more news-worthy to talk about, but they won't! Such bullshit.

OUTRAGEOUS! SHE'S SUPPOSED TO BE REPRESENTING THE AMERICAN PEOPLE! BLAH, BLAH, BLAH...

Fuck all that, man. She's dressed like any other moms in hot weather.

Fuck tha haters! She's looks fine.

Maybe they would like her to spend her holidays in the Grand Canyon dressed up like she was attending/hosting a ball... pfff

"And there goes Michelle Obama, climbing the mountains in a Valentino cocktail dress and coral Jimmy Choos" xDDDD

Damn, Malia's getting tall!

LOL I love that! TLo would have a runway shot and hers in a Valentino Fall 29009 Couture gown LOL

Excellent comment - unprecedented time of peace and prosperity and unity

I strongly dislike her and her husband's politics - and think they normally get a pass by the press. But WHAT THE HELL, she looks perfectly fine!

thank you boys.

i cant even believe it had to be a topic on tv. good grief!

Yes, they're boring grey.
Also, her stems look great.
What's there to discuss?

"Thankfully, there's so little else to report on in this unprecedented time of peace and prosperity and unity that the media can devote all their resources to this pressing issue."

I would so rather for Matt and Katie to focus on those peaceful and weapon-free health care Jamborees! Damn!

I hate to admit it, but at first, I was somewhat shocked, but then I thought, she's a mom with her kids on vacation, why not?

This is exactly the reason I have NO desire to be famous in any way. The media and everyone else is constantly judging this woman 24/7 on every aspect of everything. the only person who had it worse was Princess Diana.

If she wants to wear a hefty bag when off duty, let her do it in peace.

TampaBay

I feel bad for the Prez, wearing full-length black trousers. I suppose the hullabaloo would have been exponentially worse had he pulled Short-gate though....

Malia Obama is a flippin supermodel.

Isn't it great to see a first lady who wears shorts? It's been awhile.

Breaking news: first lady has great gams. There, all done. Back to Project Runway, you media whores (not you, T-Lo)

Hot weather is not particulary kind to people who are heavier on the bottom (I know this all too well), especially when you're trotting after active kids (no flouncy skirts here) and there are 500 camers on you (definitely no flouncy skirts that can blow up at the most unfortunate moment). Leave her the HELL alone! She's the appropriately dressed one here - the Prez seems almost tightwadish with those khakis and golf shirt.

PaperPusher

Thank goodness this crisis has been brought to our attention. Just think of the scandal if she had worn (*gasp*) flip-flops.

If she wants to wear a hefty bag when off duty, let her do it in peace.

LOL! Well said, TB.

I saw this on Yahoo yesterday and I was shocked! Shocked, I say! Shocked that I didn't see it here on TLo first...

The Yahoo article kept referring to the offending garment as "short shorts". Srsly? SRSLY? They don't even come close as a candidate for a Nair commercial.

We need to get back to real news - where's the PR All Star update?? (That was last night, wasn't it?)

loool thanks, and they would certanly have :) Thanks for replying on my very first comment on PRGblog! (I'm a huge fan, I just usually don't have the time to comment)

Well, I don't particularly care for her (sorry!), but she's young, she's vacationing so shorts are entirely appropriate. She's not Mamie Eisenhower or Pat Nixon for God's sake.

Can't agree more about what you boys said: particularly about the media. They must need a hobby?

My thoughts exactly. Get a grip, media.

I'll chalk it up to a "slow news day." But, still. There wasn't SOMETHING else to talk about?

TLo is as always the voice of reason. What did they expect her to wear? Sweatpants?
Dear media, be realistic. She's on vacation in basically the frickin desert. Next thing you know they'll be wanting her to wear a Chanel dress to hang with her kids at Disney World.

She looks normal and perfectly fine. The news needs to get over it.

beautifulmonday

"I feel bad for the Prez, wearing full-length black trousers. I suppose the hullabaloo would have been exponentially worse had he pulled Short-gate though...."

Exactly!

So...a First Lady is not allowed to wear shorts now?

Unbelievable.

Can you imagine? You can't even get out of the house without full makeup and in your best outfit. That must be horrible.

I see no problem, she's on vacation. I don't get it.

bitchybitchybitchy

Thankfully, there's so little else to report on in this unprecedented time of peace and prosperity and unity that the media can devote all their resources to this pressing issue.

Y'all said all there, TLo!

Your final sentence says it all. I heard that "Today" show bit and thought it was a new low, even for the "Today" show. Real issues are waaaay too compwicated for ow widdow bwains so why bother?

Let me throw this out into the discussion... the president was not in shorts. He was casual, but not in shorts. I think to a certain extent that she should have followed his example. While it certainly wasn't a state dinner, they were stepping off Air Force One, which is always a photo op for the first family. That said, I say good for her!

"Lloyd Jason said...

Why?

Exactly. I could not believe it when I started seeing this nonsense online. People in the media need to get a grip.

If there was any doubt that y'all are the best, this post has completely removed it.

Nice to see some anger and outrage bubbling through - "unprecedented time of peace, etc."

I liked the shorts, but I have pretty low taste. I also haven't worn shorts in years. Unlike the Glamorous Obamas, I do NOT have fabulous legs.

I LOVE that this woman refuses to pander to her husband's career. Like on election day, when she was photoed in a jogging suit, voting at 7am or whatever with Barack. No ugly suits and glassy-eyed forced smiles from this first lady.

Bonnie - PR All-Stars is on tonight at 8, before the Season 6 premier.

"Lloyd Jason said...

The difference is that he is president and they usually want to look professional at every moment. She is a woman who happens to be married to a man who wanted to be president, she should be forced to change her whole life for that. Also, I wouldn't really have cared if he had worn shorts either. They are in the freaking desert in summer!

Ridiculo!

He should have been in shorts, too. Or at least Khakis. He looks a bit formal for a vacation.
Malia is getting tall and gorgeous! She's going to be a classic beauty.

Perhaps she was as unimpressed with the Michael Kors resort collection as we were.

I heard about this big breaking story this morning and in a way it kind of depresses me how little research some reports do.
I know that Jackie Kennedy (as did Jack) wore shorts on vacation when she was First Lady and I am positive that I have seen a picture of Rosalynn Carter wearing shorts on vacation when she was first lady. I * think* that I've seen a picture of a couple of other
First Ladies in shorts too.

And I know I've seen Hillary Clinton and Elenore Roosevelt in *gasp* swimsuits!

Funny thing is, the entire fancy-gown-while-mountain climbing is ..... sort of common in China. I commonly saw girls in four inch heels climbing the Great Wall. I'm glad Michelle Obama feels comfortable enough with herself and the media to wear what is suitable for the situation and weather!

Do you think anyone in the media reads TLo? They should and get some perspective! And speaking of public scrutiny of heads of state, has anyone else noticed that Hilary Clinton needs to have her hair done lately?

Politics aside, I do agree with your "WTH..she looks perfectly fine!".
PS: I think her legs are awesome!!
A reminder for me to get back on the ole treadmill...ugh.

I'm cracking up at the Michael Kors resort collection comment.

I think the prez should have taken a cue from his wife and worn a pair of nicely tailored shorts and runners. Totally appropriate.

Agreed 100%.
What makes Mrs. O a fashionista is that she always hits the Time, Place, and Occasion correctly.

p.s.I live in Texas, where it's hits the high 90s every day from June to early September. The official mom outfit for zoos and parks are workout wear, 'cause they wick moisture away from the skin. The cotton Mrs. O's wearing looks too hot to me.

"Katie said: And speaking of public scrutiny of heads of state, has anyone else noticed that Hilary Clinton needs to have her hair done lately?"

She's been in hot, steamy Africa. I can just imagine what the hater/pundits would make of it (and how loud they'd scream) if she took her stylist on the trip.

--GothamTomato

I was more offended by #44 wearing mom jeans at the Cubs opener.

Can you imagine him in *gasp* shorts??????

"Oh, there goes Barry trying to further his stance on this fictitious Global Warming debate...Don't they realize that the hot sun is God's kisses to the sand?"

She looks ready to hit the garage sales to me. There is a way to dress casual in hot weather and look a bit better than that.

She looks fine. She's got great legs, might as well work them, especially in that heat. Yay for normality.

Thankfully, there's so little else to report on in this unprecedented time of peace and prosperity and unity that the media can devote all their resources to this pressing issue.

In case you have not heard it enough:

I love you guys.

Sorry Today show but this is significantly better than what most of America's moms deem age/body-type appropriate for summer wear. Just because she's not in couture?!

Amen Sisters!

Jackie Kennedy in shorts and also no sleeves and Jack's in shorts, too.

And the Reagans in bathing suits, god help us, near the end of his first term.

They're all just people for goodness sake.

HellsKitchenDude

You can bring guns to presidential events, but the first lady can't wear shorts? Something wrong here.

She could have worn a long shorts to the knees, just saying.

It's refreshing to have a First Lady who is feels like she can wear whatever the hell she wants. Why not?

She's NOT wearing daisy duke shorts.

That's what happens when you're built up as a fashion icon, people think they can talk about your fashion sense.

CanIGetYouAnything?

I think she looks great. There's nothing wrong with the First Lady wearing shorts.

I am beginning to feel that those who have a problem with the first lady showing some leg haven't seen their feet in 25 years.

Absolutely OK in my book.

Are they kidding? Do they know how frigging hot it is in Phoenix??

They keep calling it short shorts, those are not short shorts.

I think the shorts are cute and very flattering to her fabulous legs. Go ahead, Michelle!

Agreed.
Have the media ever BEEN to the Grand Canyon? It's IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DESERT.
Not the place for wool skirts.

TLO said: "Thankfully, there's so little else to report on in this unprecedented time of peace and prosperity and unity that the media can devote all their resources to this pressing issue."

YES! Thank you for summing this up so nicely in a nutshell! WTF!! We've got an economy in flux, two wars, and a president trying to solve the health care debacle and the media's focusing on Shelly's shorts???

[sigh]

looking forward to tonight as a means of forgetting - at least temporarily - about all of the above.

srq

God forbid if she ever decides to go to the pool or to the beach with her kids. The country will explode!

Bill, when I read your comment I was all set to get indignant - I loved Reagan - (my area was filled with Reagan Dems), but then I linked to the pic..... hehe.

I honestly thought all the attention was a joke when I first heard it - like the media was poking fun at themselves.

"Thankfully, there's so little else to report on in this unprecedented time of peace and prosperity and unity that the media can devote all their resources to this pressing issue."

Let me just share my viewpoint to this statement....

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Get a freaking GRIP, people!!!

The First Lady should always wear something that looks good and appropriate because these photos are plastered all over the world, newspapers, magazines...She has to dress like a First Lady even she's walking her dog.

The thing is, the shorts are perfectly appropriate for a middle aged woman ... they are not appropriate for anyone touted as a modern fashion icon. I think, in many ways, the media is to blame for this because Ms.O never claimed to be stylish or fashionable, so when she stumbles a bit, it becomes a feeding frenzy because she doesnt live up to the hype that fashonistas wish to project on her.

She looks good in them and she has nice leg. Deal with it, people.

C'mon, guys, look at the shot of her getting out of the limo.

I was looking for some Classic Colbert outrage and came across this:

Michelle Obama's Shorts: A Final Reckoning
By Roy Edroso in Featured, PoliticsWednesday, Aug. 19 2009 @ 5:51PM

We have to admit. we were disappointed that the shorts Michelle Obama wore to the Grand Canyon -- which have burned up the non-partisan idiot press -- have yet to roil the usually roilable rightbloggers, despite the involvement of an Obama.
There were a few takers. These affected sympathy, but as usual couldn't hold the pose long. "There are rules about wearing shorts," humphed American Princess, "but worn incorrectly and you have yourself a giant ass." "Now, don't get me wrong," said Conservative Moms, "I understand the need for comfort and wore plenty of VERY short shorts in high school and college..." but "I think she needs to accept the fact that she is in her 40's..." and then they show a picture of her giant ass...

Maybe the meme caught them by surprise, and they were still busy circulating the story, spread by email from old white lady to old white lady, that Michelle Obama has twenty-six attendants, "including a hair dresser and make-up artist," whereas Laura Bush made do with the Renee Zellweger character from Cold Mountain and a little girl to hold her cigarettes. The Free Republic version of this story, which must be considered definitive, claims "the discovery of the additional attendants was made by D'Angelo Gore of factcheck.org," though the only page that fits this description we could find indicates that Mrs. Obama and Mrs. Bush had roughly equivalent budgets.

(It should be noted that some of the Freepers at that post get into the Michelle shorts, too: "She's packing a bulge in her shorts coming down those steps. Looks like a jock strap," etc.)

In general, though, this shorts thing seems a non-starter, and the "fake outrage" Newsweek noticed has been easily dispelled by genuinely sympathetic and informed observers -- such as The Art of the Female Backside. The shorts "are fair more conserative than your old school daisy dukes," says TAOTFB. "She has an amazing body..." The site's previous considerations of the theme, "Obama definitely a real brother!!! He likes his humps" and Girls shakin ass and nuttin but ass" speak to their authority.

This comment has been removed by the author.

She has a toned body, she's healthy, as a woman, I feel like I can finally relate to a First Lady.

She can wear whatever she wants. I'm more concerned about her husband and what he's doing to save our economy.

@ Gotham Tomato and Katie,

I remember seeing an interview years & years ago where Seretary Clinton, as FIrst Lady to be, stated that she had NO hair styling ability and NO fashion ability and that she consideed it a genetic birth defect in a very "LOL" way. The press gave up commenting on her fashion/hair style/general styling sense when she constantly responded that she always tried like "hell" but can never get it right. This was not great copy so the press finally left her alone on this issue which is as it should be.

Also, if the rumors I hear are true, Hillary is not a big money spender and really does not enjoy spending money...ie..SHOPPING.

TampaBay

Sure looks to me like the first lady is representing the American people. She looks like an American mom, on an American vacation. Of course, if she'd wanted to wear a ball gown or a bikini instead, I wouldn't have blamed her either. Questioned her taste and sense of practicality, sure, but not blamed her.

She's been in hot, steamy Africa. I can just imagine what the hater/pundits would make of it (and how loud they'd scream) if she took her stylist on the trip.

--GothamTomato

Well, of course. They're still bitter that most of their campaign budget went to Bump Its.

I'm glad that she's such an utterly normal woman wearing utterly normal clothing for this. The outfit looks comfy and perfectly appropriate.

She looks great.

Absolutely fine. Go Shelley!

She looks amazing. I see no problem here.

Interesting article:

"Who, Exactly, Is Outraged At Michelle Obama's Shorts? Michelle Obama wore shorts to visit the Grand Canyon. Have you heard? Everyone is up in arms—if by "everyone" you mean no one, or rather a large, shadow-y group of no ones."

Oh for the love of God. She looks fine! And as a 20-year-old, her legs look way better in shorts than mine do. MAJOR kudos.

I feel for poor Barry, though. He must be absolutely sweltering.

Also, how tall and gorgeous is Malia Obama getting? Wow.

She looks so much better without a giant belt strangling her underboobs.

ItsyBit
She looks amazing.

ok now there is NO credibility.

The fact that she is wearing those shorts is not a bit deal

But AMAZING? Good grief. And the oceans have parted?

Ah, nothing like a good old ShelleyO row to kick off the day!

And I thought it was going to be boring until 8 tonight!

Does nobody care that Barack isn't even wearing a polo that fits??

To me the very idea of democracy inextricably linked to the freedom to tear down the people that we elect. THAT is the point. The ultimate check and balance to the power that elected officials, officials that we entrust to govern on our behalf, must bear in mind and fear.

So it’s the borderline deification of the American Presidency that seems to emanate from some quarters that I find particularly curious. Ok the President is doing a very difficult job with unimaginable responsibilities and his (and perhaps one day, her) family must on some level pay the price for that. But we should never lose sight of the fact that he or she, is at the end of the day, just another politician and what’s more one that put his/her hand up for the job.

So long story short, she’s a mother and she’s on vacation. And just as you should have the freedom to criticize her for her choices, she should also have the freedom to wear what she likes, whenever or wherever she likes.

Mm, thighs! She's so athletic and graceful and mm. Her husband looks yummy too. Please continue to be hot, First Family. Long pants optional!

@Ross-What are "BUMP ITs"?

TampaBay

I agree completely. She deserves a vacation just to be with her family and see the sights. She shouldn't have to be all decked out 24 hours a day. First and foremost: she's a mom on vacation with her family period. End of discussion!!

I strongly suspect that all the bobble-heads are just jealous.

OMG, Ross, good one on the Bump- Its....

Excellent post as usual boys. Now, moving right along....

Not a fan, not a hater. I do NOT consider her a fashion icon, (underboob belts, no thanks!), however, it's eleventy jillion degrees at the Grand Canyon, so, she looks fine. I'm about her age, and would wear the same thing in that heat. No big deal.

Yay for the shorts!

When you're a First Lady with legs like that, you've earned the right to wear shorts when you're on vacation with your kids.

Keep working it Michelle.

Excuse me, but I live in the Phoenix area, and it has been 110-115 degrees here for the last six weeks or more, so I think its a testament to her sense of propriety that she didn't show up in a skimpy two-piece swimsuit or maybe even NUDE to deal with the heat. Speaking of nude, why no MM press about the nekkid poster photo of former first Lady Jackie O that was found in Warhol's possessions? Oh, yeah, that's right~no one cares 'cause she's dead and it can't create a major international fashion'incident'...Michelle still looks better than Sarah does in her friggin' fishing waders...

I just love everything about her so much that everything she wears looks perfect to me. Yeah, the shorts are not flattering and it's not a great outfit. But she's Michelle Freaking OBAMA people! The great granddaughter of a former slave in the White House? Who is part of the OBAMA White House? Everything she does is golden as far as I'm concerned. -victoria.

Thank you gentlemen. Very wisely and concisely summed up, as usual!!

A lot of comments (while in agreement that this is a complete non-issue) say she looks "like a mom on vacation with her kids."

Isn't this the way a lot of people, not only moms, dress on vacation, kids or not?

Sorry, the "mom" classification gets me riled up. Woman first, mom next, First Lady next, and so on and so forth...

And happy PR Day, guys!

MY EYES! my god, that photo of Ron n Nancy in their swimsuits should have a NSFW tag.

I am really confused by Nancy's bust in that suit. Concerned, and confused.

From the Newsweek blog:

[Q] But why hide behind an anonymous attacker? [A] Because if there's not controversy, it's just the American public gawking at a woman's form. This is something that happens all the time, but needs to be cloaked in social relevance when the woman is not a traditional target for public consumption. Models, actresses, even athletes can be the subject of objectification, but to ogle the first lady on national TV requires a bit of news-related window dressing.

By reporting on "some critics," journalists allow themselves to be the heroes. They're coming to Obama's rescue by defending her right to wear whatever she pleases—a right that was never questioned in the first place, and a right that almost everyone in America is OK with. In the process, they are able to yet again comment on her body, making her legs, her hips, her thighs, and her belly just as much a part of public discourse as her husband's health-care fight.

Never mind the fact that all this talk about people supporting Obama's shorts makes it seem like society gets a say in how one woman chooses to dress. The decisions women make about their clothing and bodies isn't something for which we need "approval" and support"—and yet we're conducting polls to reassure one another that we're ok with a grown woman exposing her legs.

Michelle Obama does not need to be rescued. She does not need you commenting on the finer points of her body. And she most definitely does not need our permission to wear shorts.

I'm meh on the shorts; I'm the same age (give or take a few years) as the First Lady and I don't wear shorts anymore -- I don't think they are at all flattering. I'm bottom heavy in the same way she is, and I need something to balance out my "gigantic ass" LOL. So I think Shelley could look better, but that's not the same thing as saying that what she's wearing even hints at scandal or bad taste or any of the things that some folks are talking about.

I'd like to point out that even though it's 110+ degrees down here in Phoenix, up by the Canyon it's a much more reasonable high 70s, low 80s, and not humid -- it's not sweltering there the way it is here, since it's at a much higher elevation. And the Grand Canyon isn't in the middle of a desert, either. The drive up there from Phoenix is fascinating as you leave the desert and drive through the different plant zones. The Canyon is surrounded by forest.

8/20/09 11:50 AM C'mon, guys, look at the shot of her getting out of the limo.

Because your clothes, are NEVER, NEVER, EVER wrinkled. Right?

Hmmmph. Our delicate sensibilities are offended!

If she insists on wearing hiking shorts when hiking in 106 degree mid-afternoon desert temps, she should change in the car (Sasha could hold a towel up to the window!) or in a stinking hot parking lot latrine just like her fellow citizens.

PS -- I love you Boyz!

PS -- Just imagine if she'd worn a skirt and the wind at the canyon blew her skirt up and we saw her legs!

Moi - I knew several women who had chests like that. And at some point Nancy Reagan had breast cancer (coincidentally so did a couople of the women who's chests looked like hers).

Joan - good point on the "weather" lesson. I had been in DC for the past decade and finally made it to AZ (Phoenix area) last year - and I have to say that the "misery" index was far worse in DC. And the temps at the Grand Canyon are nowhere near the same as in Phoenix.

Finally I have to laugh about the comments about her changing in the car (limo) - geez I did that often twice a week on my was to a game after work.

Thanks, Joan. I was wondering if anybody in this comments section HAD ever been to the Grand Canyon. It is surrounded by PINE TREES for gosh sakes. That's hardly a desert. The bottom of the canyon is a desert, but on the rim, it's cool and comfy--cold and snows in the winter.

I am older than the First Lady and still rock the shorts. I fully support all women and their clothing decisions, whether they are mothers or not. Well, maybe not Sharon Stone--ha.

Was there such a fuss when Jackie and JFK wore shorts?

This reminds me of a story about Queen Victoria (probably apocryphal). The French minister was asking one of her staff what might make a good gift for the queen, perhaps silk stockings? The staffer haughtily replied, "Sir, the queen does not have legs." Back in those days, they put bloomers on the piano legs.

Yes. It's so refreshing to have a first lady with common sense. Too bad half the country isn't following suit and thinks this is an issue.

Oh how silly. Seriously, what would people rather her wear? In 110+ degree heat? In the sun? On vacation with her family? That includes two very active girls and a large, active puppy?

You know that no matter what she had worn though, people would still make fun of it or find fault with it.

She also wore a dress from Target!

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/08/19/michelle-obama-dons-targe_n_263245.html

Go Shelley! It's a cute dress.

In his interview with Mo Ryan, Tim Gunn said that one of the reasons Shelley's such a fashion icon is that she proves you don't have to spend a lot of $ to look good.

I concur.

The photo of Jackie O that someone linked to is the way a First Lady, an alleged fashion icon and a woman of 40+ should wear shorts. But then, Jackie was slim and beautiful and really was a true fashion icon. Shelley O's look is not at all flattering - it really emphasizes her enormous ass, thighs and hips - and while those shorts aren't exactly Daisy Dukes they're really too short and too casual. She looks like she's going to wash the car in the back yard.

As someone else noted, anytime you get off Air Force 1 surrounded by secret service agents, you're going to be photgraphed. And she could have managed to look more pulled together, more appropriate, and still be cool and comfortable. Part of the trade-off of having private planes, bodyguards, being in history books, etc., is that you're expected to look and act a certain way. If she's not willing to do that then perhaps she should have insisted that the Bamster stay in Chicago. As the wife of a junior senator nobody would have known or cared what the hell she wore. This is a big fail on her part. But a scandal? No.

And are they really on vacation? I thought they were there to shore up public opinion on his faltering health care proposal.

JOAN, in case it missed your attention: 8/16/09 PHOENIX -- "President Obama is back in Phoenix after touring the Grand Canyon National Park with his family.

The president's Grand Canyon visit on Sunday was a private affair with no public events. He plans a speech at the annual Veterans of Foreign Wars convention in Phoenix on Monday.

The Obamas spent less than four hours at the scenic wonder carved out by the Colorado River.

The president arrived in Phoenix on Saturday evening on the last leg of a swing through western states.."

The Obamas flew into the Grand Canyon from PHOENIX, which was about 108 degrees at mid-day (low 80s in GC country), then back out in four hours to PHOENIX. I think it is perfectly understandable that someone from Summer-sticky Chicago would think that shorts were appropriate for 80+ weather, let alone 108+ weather. Are you implying that Michelle should have changed her clothes to something else to go to a private location for 4 HOURS with no public events scheduled, then change back again to return, here, to the third basement of Hell? Didn't think so...that would just be too silly. By the way, what is your profession? School Marm? I haven't had a geography lesson like that since Mrs. Shapiro in 5th Grade.

I agree it's ridiculous to spend so much fricking time on a pair of shorts. And yes, she is a Mom on vacation.

However, she is still the First Lady and is expected to show some taste in apparel. (whether she likes it or not - that's the way it is)

I see nothing wrong with the shorts, but she could've worn slightly longer ones with a nicer cut & color for her.

OMG Joan! You really ARE a school teacher...didn't know that when I posted. No wonder you were so good at teachin' that lesson..lol. No offense meant...

With all the defense of Mrs O wearing shorts.

Mr. Obama is in dark long pants, while Mrs. O is wearing overally casual, unflattering shorts for her frame, size and weight.

I completely agree. You'd think she was wearing booty shorts and swinging on a pole the way folks are acting.

I like her watch!

She's got nice legs, even if it is not the best pair of shorts in the world. I'd say she's got more right to wear shotrs than most of the women I know. And I wouldn't ahve minded seeing Mr. O's legs, either.

And are they really on vacation?

SHE is on vacation with her children Her husband, who is the President, joined them.
The first lady does not get paid and until we pay them a salary the FLOTUS can wear whatever she pleases.

ANon - 8/20/09 5:52 PM - have to give you credit - some great points.

Pfft. I can only praise her for the absence of a fanny pack and a visor.

Anon 5:52 is full of shit. The woman is on vacation, period. She dosen't need to dress like a prairie wife. And for someone who says its no big deal, they are certainly making it into one.

FlamencoKitty
8/20/09 4:56 PM You know that no matter what she had worn though, people would still make fun of it or find fault with it.

And there it is right there. Disgruntled Hockey Moms whose husbands have to tell them that Shelley is BAD, BAD, BAD! (and black)

Ah, TLO! Why isn't everyone as smart and spot-on as you? Well said as usual, boyz. LOVE YOU GUYS!

Hate on the FOTUS much? She does NOT have a fat ass, hips or thighs. She's a tall, athletic woman in her late 40s.

Remember, shorts that on smaller women would go to their knees probably look shorter on her because she has long legs. She's 6 feet tall. She probably has a hard time even finding shorts that fit.

And who suggested capris. Really? Tim Gunn points out that capris make most women who aren't tall twigs look dumpy as hell. If you don't think so, I highly recommend renting one of the Lord of the Rings movies and look at the hobbits. the costumers chose those capri-like pants to make the actors look shorter and dumpier.

And then you would no doubt rag on her for wearinging those.

Sheesh.

Yep, I have been to the Grand Canyon and the rim is not bad. I rather like that she wore shorts. In this way, to me, anyhow, she is more s representative First Lady than if she had been dressier. I can relate more to a Mom in Mom-clothes that Mamie in pearls. She is a modern woman with great gams, emjoying a day with her family, just like millions of other families. Go Shelley!

She's the First Lady--she sets the standard for style during her era whether you like it or not. What are folks afraid of? The obsession with her "appropriateness" is not fashion critique--it's plain old sexism and racism pretending to be something else. How dare she show her arms! Her legs! Her self! Put her in her place!

fashionablylate

I will take shorts in a heartbeat over capris - lord how I loathe those things! They are NOT attractive on ANYONE EVER - hideous, I wish they would just go away. I seriously cringe when I see someone wearing them. The only other piece of wearing apparel that creates that visceral a reaction in me is the dreaded "crocs", which should also go away never to return, please and thank you!

I'm 72 years old and I wish I was thin enough to wear shorts. In the same situation, I'd've had to wear cropped pants. People, get a life!

Well it's evident she's traded in the treadmill for three square meals. Poor thing has gotten so heavy in such a short time.

She is putting her health at risk. If she has cottage cheese on the front of her legs, that all poor diet and no exercise. I hope she gets back in shape, or at least find a clothing coach to select more befitting and flattering clothes. She looks like she just rolled out of bed, smashed her hair back as always, and borrowed some mens clothing.

Her girls sure look cute, and her hubby got by at the same location in trousers. She needs to realize that her every move is a rep of the US.

Bullshit. Keep on hatin', dude. MichelleO doesn't need to dress like Mammy for your approval.

Cowabunga- She sure is comfortable with her new size.

Man she has she gotten really fat. Cottage cheese on the front of her things. There must be a baby on the way for her to get so heavy so fast.

It will never be thicker than the stuff in your head.

If she's fat, then what's your idea of thin?

Who cares what you think?

Flotus is a big beaty and not afraid to show it. You go girl.

Mrs. O has gotten heavy since being in the White House. I was hoping for her to have a baby, but from these pictures. I think she just got heavy. Big and has no problem flaunting her new size.

Some designers are going to have trouble making her look good now.

Still hoping for a baby.

Sorry, I don't think there's a baby. This link says she's just packing on the pounds.
