Project Runway Season 6: Meet Shirin Askari

Poodles, the premiere is almost upon us! One week! We need to get our shit together!

Shirin Askari
Age: 24
Birthplace: Tulsa, OK
Current Home: Garland, TX
Favorite Designers: Elie Saab, Jaques Fath, Christian Dior, Hussein Chalayan
Style Icon: Katherine Hepburn
Favorite Past Project Runway Designers:
Rami Kashou, Season 4; Leanne Marshall, Season 5

While other little girls were playing with their dolls and changing their clothes, Shirin was busy making the clothes! She was taught how to sew at four years old by her mother, and, by the age of seven, she was designing and making her own dresses. She went on to design and sew headscarves in middle school before she received formal training at the University of North Texas where she earned a BFA in Fashion Design. Shirin is currently a freelance designer and previously served as an assistant tech designer for Fossil. She often draws her inspiration from the fabric; she creates the garment after seeing how it feels and drapes. She is also influenced by classic movies starring Fred Astaire, Katherine Hepburn and Cary Grant.

Why she’ll win?
Shirin believes she has an eye for fashion, an unbelievable drive and a strong knowledge of how to give the client what he/she wants, while still being creative.

Tim Gunn: "She's young, she's pretty, she's articulate. I'm not sure what is distinctive about her, other than the fact that she's good."

TimSpeak: "Who?"

Well isn't she just as perky as a newborn kitten on a sugar high! Honey? Here's a bit of advice: if you want to be on television, try not to use loaded terms like "cripple," even if you use airquotes around it. We know, right? People are just so gay and retarded about stuff like that!

Portfolio:

Not bad. We can see her personality in her work: flirty and feminine and young. Thing is, designers like this rarely catch and hold the judges' attention. We would even go so far as to say Michael and Nina have a bias against solid work like this if they feel there's no edge to it.

Check out more on Shirin at her myLifetime.com page.

solid is a good place to start though, considering that some previous contestants have been a little less than solid.
:)

like her style. wonder if it can translate to crazy challenges, though? hmmm.

LOL. She's a future hot mess on the runway.

She strikes me as the kind of designer that is safe for the first 4-5 episodes, then does well for one of the more commercial challenges, before she gets aufed with about 8-9 people left.

Sure, she's good. But you're right. Who was she again?

Yeesh, I don't care that she said 'cripple,' I just think she's annoying as hell. Way too self-aware, thinking she's coming off so cute. You can't tell me that audition video wasn't rehearsed to death.

Her clothes are ok but nothing that interesting. I don't really see a visual aesthetic there at all. I can see why Tim thinks she's good but doesn't see anything distinctive about her.

Pleats and flaps...UH OH...

SHE'S COPYING LEANNE!!!!!

The clothes are pretty, but there's nothing new, interesting or innovative about them.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess Tim doesn't know much about her b/c she is gone by week 3. Some of her dresses are pretty though.

Now, she's cute!

Whatdya think, Alex?

Over the top perkiness always drives me nuts. I agree with everything Shemima said. It's nice that she's so detail oriented for the finishing of garments. Let's see if there's any time for that in the competition!

denim dress?

oh honey no.

Well as to Tim's comment about her being DISTINCTIVE...

Blayne, spit girl, ALP, Santino, Zulema, etc they could all be distinctive...
But not sure overall how often that matches up with GOOD?

My favorite part of her audition tape was when she put quotations marks around "working experience". OMG you guys, actual hands-on experience in the industry is so lame.

She says she's witty and sarcastic, but right now I'm just annoyed. She'll break and cry at some point.

Uh, quite often, actually. Naming a few crap-ass designers doesn't excuse bland work. In fact, I would say a lot of those people's failures are more interesting than this girl's "successes"...

In swear it seams like you are the jhs bully and I'm your mark.

Blayne's successes, Zulema's, spit girl? Can you provide the MANY examples of their great work? Heck having an inflammatory personality makes ALP and Santino DISCTINCTIVE, but UGH

I like some of her dresses and the first coat. Cute and girly : )

Ask, your ability to misinterpret the simple comments directed toward you is simply awe-inspiring. Nobody said Blayne or Zulema, or "Spit Girl" (aka Elisa) had any successes, simply that their failures were more interesting than Shirin's best (but bland) work. Now, do I need to explain that again?

People are just so gay and retarded about stuff like that!

Oh god, I snorted aloud and frightened the cat. Her catty way of airquoting "cripple" is really offputting and I'm getting the feeling that if shit like that keeps up, I won't be liking her much.

Her clothes are okay. Some nice things, kinda boring. She's another contestant that I'm really "whatever" about.

Giggly, shreekie (is that a word?), and nervewracking. Gone by at least the 4th or 5th episode, hopefully.
Designs: cute but not in the least innovative. Translate: boring
I did not care at all for her use of the word "cripple", as my daughter suffers from MS and absolutely HATES the word "cripple".

Ruffles needs to remember that "air quotes" waste too much time when you only have two hours to finish that couture dress AND say something snarky in the confessional.

The girl can definitely sew. I think her creativity will rise to the level of competition she is surrounded by.

The younger you are the more trendy you are or can become. I think her portfolio designs are on the conservative side because that is what she is selling to her Texas based clientele.

Her coats appear to be really nice.
and I agree that she has a good attention to detail.

Therefore, my prediciton:
Attention to detail = perfectionist = not able to work with crazy deadlines.

That coupled with Tim's comment means she will be out early because she won't finish projects.

A nickle bet anyone?

How about a double Makers & Coke at the TLo Lounge next time they open for a private party?

Are you guys still "Closed for Remodeling"? LOL! LOL! You should know by now, none of us have a problem consuming alcohol at a construction site. We won't tell OSHA.

Enhh, she's better than Daniella.

That's a start in a good direction.

Oh Lordy! "People are just so gay and retarded about stuff like that!"
That killed me!

We know, right? People are just so gay and retarded about stuff like that!

HEE! Love you guys!

I find her portfolio to be both kind of bland and ugly. But can someone explain to her how to photograph clothes? A black top against a black, nighttime cityscape? And what's with that shot in the orange junior high school hallway? Seriously, just find a blank white wall somewhere.

I think she'll be the first to go.

Her stuff is pretty and looks well made. I too wonder if she'll be able to maintain that level of craftmanship within insane time constraints.

I love previewing the new contestants, but I hate my tendancy to compare them to previous designers - "Oh, here's this season's Jillian or Daniella" or "Great - Another Leanne." I can't wait for the season to start so I can just enjoy the challenges and accept (love/hate) the designers as they are.

The prettiest/cutest things about her looks are the girls wearing them.
My opinion- Meh. Dated. Dull colors! But at least she can sew? That will keep her safe for at least 2 or 3 eps.

The Tim quote is pretty ominous. Perhaps she should have spent more time developing a "role" to play.

The portofolio is fairly polished, although a few of the dress have a peculiar somewhat unflattering high waist.

My prediction is that she goes pretty far in the competition while they eliminate some of the chaff. But she may be too self-consciously ingratiating for her co-contestants.

Just one week, woohoo!

most everything is cute and wearable, just not all that memorable.

Just one more week before the ripping and sewing begins!!

Tracy Flick Makes Clothes! Oh my, she's annoying. The most entertaining thing she did was call herself a cripple.

Also, everything Shemima said.

I do like her Transformer coat, though, and the dress the model was wearing with it. Very pretty.

Pleats and flaps...UH OH...

SHE'S COPYING LEANNE!!!!!

Ha! But that is a pretty cool skirt.

Yikes... The rehearsiness is highly annoying. What's she going to do when she doesn't have a script in front of her? Comes across as a little too full of herself.

Clothes are fine, if not a little boring.

She's her own model in a few of them.

There is a fine line between confidence and arrogance. If she couldn't stand because she's a "cripple," why didn't she do her audition tape sitting down? Methinks she was after the pity vote...

I was impressed with the lattice smocking until I googled it. Very easy to do, really.

Her clothes are pretty but I think I will be so tired of her I won't be able to see past her personality to admire them, much like Kenley by the end of last season. Meh.

But, how can you guys criticize her? She's "won every competition [she's] ever been in"! Clearly she's going all the way! /sarcasm.

She's yet another youngster who's too big for her britches. Clothes are cute (especially the coats) but her idea of innovation is to put battery-powered heating pads in those coats -- huh?

Hasn't anyone here ever heard of a Persian princess? That's our Shi-Shi, lol.

If she drew from her ethnic heritage a little bit more in her work, I think she could come up with some really uniquely beautiful pieces.

I think this one is well on her way to hearing Tim say, as only he can, "Don't bore Nina!"

She reminds me of Elizabeth Hasselbeck (and that's NOT a good thing).

She has a tendency to have her models posing in front of backgrounds the same color as the outfit. This is a bad thing and makes not sense to me. Wouldn't someone in a visual design field realize that if you want a grey dress to be visible, you don't shoot it against a background of grey gravel and grey trains?

She's annoying.

Ha! That's what I was thinking, but I figured I'd already used up my borderline offensive quota by complaining about intense Eastern European women (Mom, I do love you. Really.)

Not that being a princess of any variety precludes being a great person and a talented, creative soul. Just sometimes makes you hard to take in large doses.

Which I doubt we'll get (large doses) or she wouldn't have that particular Tim comment.

Elisabeth Hassleback is one of my closest, dearest, acquaintes. A True American and Laureate that you America-hating, c-word laden minions despises.

What bugs me most about her is how she treats "cripple" as a fashion choice... as if wearing crutches is a fashion faux pas and therefore a choice.

If you have to bother being shot without them you obviously want people to not see you with them, so why even mention you have them?

I also found her whole "I know you guys get so many of these videos blah blah blah". Actually, they don't, they only get the videos from the people they chose from the initial auditions. Might I add that the previous seasons' videos have been more creative (Bradley Baumkirchner and Marion Lee's come to mind)

To add insult to the injury (no pun intended) there is a currently a designer in Project Runways Autralia 2 that has been on crutches for most of her life due to childhood polio.... and not once on the show has she talked about how her condition has been a hindrance.

http://www.arenatv.com.au/projectrunway/designer.aspx?id=16

She has made it halfway through the season so far, and she really doesn't care if "cripple" doesn't go with her outfits.

Whoooa there, sugarplum! I hope she's auf'd early. I can't take that much saccharine for an extended period of time.

And um...isn't "lattice" pronnounced "la-tiss" (like "practice"), and not "la-TEESE"? Good luck, honeybuns.

obviously girl's got money behind her - it will be amusing to "watch what happens" when Daddy's not there to bail her out (when time crunches set in and she's got no where to turn but to herself). Ahhh, spoiled youth.

And, least you think I'm resentful... I laugh looking back at myself in this situation just as much as I will be laughing at her. Life lessons are entirely entertaining.

too many cats

Hell, I was expecting she and Daniel V to have a hair flip off.

(It's there, she flipped and he flipped back-twice.)

Thanks Stephanie! I think I might just go whip me up a "la-tiss" smocked pillow case this weekend!

And I agree without almost everyone - annoying girl does cutesie designing, can't keep deadline b/c trying to add too many deatils to be too perfect, auf'ed early.

Methinks I'm going to like her clothes a lot.

Honestly, I didn't even look at her clothes. After her audition tape, I just wanted to slap her kind of a lot.

This girl makes me ill. She acts like such a ditz! Oh dear God, what are we in for this season?

Remember Lee Ann? She was a "who?" in last season and look who's talking now? I like her work... so far. But I agree.. if she can't figure out how to talk, OMG she could be great fun to watch.

wow. that was beyond annoying. i thought i was going to like her...until she opened her mouth. yikes. talk about being full of yourself or full of...

wondering if any of your judgmental opinions have changed now that the show has aired.
