Project Runway Season 6: Meet Gordana Gehlhausen

Eastern Europe reprezent, y'all!

Gordana Gehlhausen
Age: 45
Birthplace: Yugoslavia
Current Home: San Diego, CA
Favorite Designers: John Galliano
Style Icon: Grace Kelly
Favorite Past Project Runway Designers: Uli Herzner, Season 3

Originally from former Yugoslavia, Gordana grew up in a small Serbian Village in Bosnia. She has always been very creative and had a unique style of dress, knitting her first sweater when she was only seven years old. Gordana attended college in Germany, earning a Linguistics degree before she moved to Atlanta, GA. There, she fine-tuned her design skills by creating a children’s line and later moved to Charleston, SC, where she opened her first women’s boutique, GOGA. While still maintaining her store in South Carolina, Gordana recently relocated to San Diego and opened her second women’s wear boutique, GOGA by Gordana, featuring her own designs.

Why she’ll win?
Gordana believes she will win because she works hard and won’t ever quit.

Tim Gunn: [Expect a lot of] "textile development. It wouldn't be a case of going shopping and using the fabric she brought back. She'd do things to it."

TimSpeak: She's a spitter.

We have no idea what she's going to be like, but what's not to love about a 45 year old proudly wearing hotpants - AND LOOKING PRETTY DAMN GOOD IN THEM?

Portfolio:

Nice. Some very pretty looks. And we can see what Tim meant about "doing things" to fabric.

Oh, darlings. Expect lots of Boris and Natasha jokes from us this season. She's fun, though. She can walk the walk and talk the talk. She really knows how to defend and define her work and she's got a real take-no-shit attitude that we're going to enjoy seeing go up against Nina.

Check out more about Gordana at her myLifetime.com page.

You can tell from her portfolio that she knows what she is doing. I wonder if she can push the envelope and be a little more creative for the challenges when she doesn't have to worry about the bottom line.

I like her designs; a bit too girly for me, perhaps, but cute nonetheless.

As for the hot pants though... I try to accept them on middle aged women, I really do, but I still can't quite get to that point. I have a horrible experience, I think, from catching on of those catch-the-cheater shows where the middle aged woman wore hot pants. Red satin hotpants, but hotpants nonetheless. I just can't do it anymore.

Oh, dahlinks, then we must pick out Moose and Squirrel, yes? Tim will be Fearless Leader?

Seriously, she has some very pretty looks. I can see why she likes Uli; her work is slightly reminiscent.

TimSpeak: She's a spitter.

LMFAO!

Qristyl and Gordana are in hard competition for my favorite so far, both for their attitudes and their clothes. I can see some of Gordana's creations looking good on me, and that's saying something coming from a pear-shaped size 22. I hope she lasts a long time!

Plus she has a degree in Linguistics and so do I. Score one for language nerds!

I love the "things" she does with fabric. Like that long yellow dress with the necklace of fabric flowers.

This season has a bunch of designers that I really like.

(also "she's a spitter" really did make me LOL)

I think I have a new favorite! I love her designs. It will be interesting to see what happens with her if TPTB offers up a challenge for the designers to create designs from things found at a McDonalds or Burger King.

She's too blonde to be Natasha. Maybe she can be Bullwinkle.

I foresee a lot of eye rolling on her part when the young'uns start bringing the drama.

A true professional and a grown-up to boot...what the hell is she doing here?!

That said, I wonder how quickly she can sew and I'd love to see her do something in a jewel tone for me!

I worked retail with a (former) Yugoslavian, much older than Gogo, here. Everyone else hated her, but I floved that 62 year old - you have to love the attitude, they just BRING IT.

Go, Gogo!

I like her a lot. She is well-spoken, has nice work, and a great spirit. Design-wise, I almost see her as the sophisticated version of Qristyl. Gordana's work is not necessarily to my taste, but I am actually liking her muted palette a lot here whereas normally it is something I despise. I have a feeling she will be creative and skilled during the challenges, can't wait to see.

TimSpeak: She's a spitter.

Me too, at that comment. that gave me a snort.

A little ethereal for my taste, but nice.

Her stuff is kind of a cross between Uli and Rami. Ruli!

When I read Tim's, "She'd do things to it," I did not think of spit marks as much as I remembered Korto's bleached jeans and how she almost caused a hazmat incident with the chlorine fumes.

Wow based on previews I want the first episodes to be 3 hours long with no cuts for a month!

I think she looks like another strong contender.

My however, I really questioned the 44 yo age, though. I just turned 48 and I swear she looks at least mid 50's to me. And I am looking at her while contrasting a friend of mine who was born in and raised eastern Russia. I just accidently discovered that she is 71! She wear a bikini to the pool, swims, hikes and goes to the gym several times a week (at a minimum). Until I accidently learned her age, I would have said maybe 62. (So I guess my point is that I tend to underguess age - and Gordana has some features that remind me of my friend.)

If she can bring her skill in under the clock, she'll be tough to beat, I think.

She embellishes her clothes, ugh, she is copying Lee Anne.

;-P

Love anyone who has spent any time in Atlanta!

TampaBay

Nice to see a fellow Bosnian on PR :)) Yay

*e-high fives fellow language nerd!

I don't think hot pants should be on anyone above the age of 30.

However, her portfolio looks pretty good.

Whoa - never heard that euphemism for derriere before! I have to agree, though - she looks pretty good in those pants.

To be serious, her portfolio has some beautiful pieces in it. Looks like she can both design and sew well. Should be a great addition to this season's designers.

Serbs in the fashion house, woohoo!

I think there's going to be some posturing with Fraulein Klum. And a, you were kidding about LeeAnn inventing embellishments, yes? Love all the details and hope she can manage them with the crazy time constraints.

TLo, would you please stop making me inhale my food?

Oh, lordy, YES! I want to see a good old cabbage-and-sausage smackdown with Frau Seal! DA!

Me no likey the "formal shorts" on a woman of ANY age. When I opened this post, I mentally travelled to another site and screamed "SCROLLDOWN FUG!" This is not good.

The shorts are adorable but did she HAVE to wear that top with it?

TimSpeak: She's a spitter.

No no boys.... It should say: She's a knitter.

I can't wait to see her work--
I love her portfolio pics. I think she may go far.
And she doesn't seem like the type to put up with the young uns' crap.

She certainly seems to know what she's about, within her metier. Since three of my favorite fashion descriptors are "crisp," "tailored" and "androgynous" you know I'm not feeling it much, so can't say more.

It will be an interesting season in so many ways! In my life I have had waaay more than enough of Eastern European women with attitude to spare. (Some of whom are blood relatives) I tend to prefer the older ones who usually have decades of hard work and shrewdness behind them to earn my grudging respect.

Love her hot pants, her designs not so much. A bit to girlish and cute for me.

For me, I see the Uli link in both the light, gauzy dresses and also in the whole former-Eastern-European-living-in-a-seaside-city thing. I expect a lot of beachwear from this one - like Uli.

But she doesn't seem as breezy as Uli. That look on her face, it's like:
"Ja, I am wearing ze hot pants; you got problem with that?"
"Well, kinda; cuz you're like for--OH GOD MY EYE!"

Kidding aside, she is no-nonsense and confident in her skills, and I like that. Here's to hoping.

What with Gordana in her 40s and Mr. Epperson in his 50s, it will be WAY interesting to hear the designers defend their work to the judges & Tim as peers.

I agree, it's nice to see older designers on the show too. It's a nice mix. I'm looking forward to see what she can do on the show, it looks like she has a lot of experience.

Pretty interesting looks, nothing very innovative, but pretty. Pretty is good right?

Love hot pants, I wish the designers would bring that back more often.

I LOVE this one! Hope she goes far.

I agree, the question is can she impress the judges?

YAY!!!!!!!

I don't like all the flowers in every single garment, too girly for me.

Hmmm, I smell stubbornness, I don't know why.

"TimSpeak: She's a spitter."

ROFLMAO.

OOoooh, pretty. I really like her dresses. Very feminine.

I do a mean Natasha impression.

.

Germany is not in Eastern Europe. Germany and (what is now) Bosnia are nothing alike.

I think the general connection is there, considering they were both Soviet states back in the day; that's where people are drawing from, I would believe.

Her stuff reminds me alot of TFS Keith aka Disappointed Midwestern Mom

another laura

I look forward to watching this one. Mature female in short shorts, represent! I would totally wear short shorts if I could. But I can't, so I won't.

The problem with those so-called experienced, established designers is that they tend to stay inside the box and not be able to impress the judges.

I like her. Hot pants are hot :)

Hey, if you have the body and you're not past the age of 60, why not?

She's a spitter! Bwah! I love your translations of Tim-speak.

i drove by her store in downtown san diego recently. it's a cute little boutique.

Oo, I like her! I like her strength and focus. Sounds like she's got a great base of design and experience, and the personality to hopefully do some fun stuff when she branches out.

Come on Gordana!

Lovin' her portfolio.

"Spitter". Ha ha, the same thing came to my mind when I read the initial quote.

This chick's clothes? Blech. Run-of-the-mill man-trap dresses, for unadventurous adventuresses...

I met her today at Lenox Square Mall and she and two other designers chose my cut t-shirt to be the winner!!!! So she is my instant favorite!

Question?

How do you grow up in a Serbian village in Bosnia?
It is either a Serbian village in Serbia or a village in Bosnia mainly populated by Serbs. Can we get the geography down, please!

you CAN be living in a Serbian village in Bosnia because the majority of the village can be of Serbian descent but geographically be in Bosnia.

Good example: Trebinje.

Its not that the blog go the geography wrong it's that you just didn't understand.

actually he does have a point there :). Serbians and Bosnian Serbs are two different things.

And who said that Bosnia is former Soviet (or did I get that person wrong...I really hope that I got that person wrong).

Gordana, I think you are amazing; your creations are so magical and feminine and ethereal, a quality which is essential and that I see is so badly needed in so much fashion. Please don't ever give up; your styles are inspirational and elevating. Much love, Ross
