Shelley O is Boring Us.

Labels:
Michelle Obama during a visit to the Unity Health Care's Upper Cardozo Center and at a reception for Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Pride Month in the East Room of the White House in Washington, DC.

Kittens, we cannot yawn hard enough. It's just her dragging out her usual bag of mistakes. The top is too blousey and busy on her. It looks like it has some interesting details but of course they're obscured by that big-ass belt, a signature look of Shelley's, our ongoing disapproval of which has long been documented here at T Lo.

It's just all so bleh and, like we said, a walking summary of all the mistakes she commonly makes. Those sleeves not only don't compliment her, they obscure her best feature; that belt draws the eye too much and it sits at a very unflattering place on her figure; the color is drab and she's shown time and again that she's made for rich colors.

The hair, makeup and jewelry all look great. It's a shame everything else looks so dreary and ill-fitting.

She needs to lose that #*$(@#&$ ugly belt! Maybe we could interrupt the Michael Jackson media frenzy and call for an all-out fashion intervention for Shelley O. STAT!

While I agree with you that the outfit was a snooze and was hiding all her best outfits, I still say props to Miz O for taking risks. It's not your typical First Lady suit - it's modern and flirty and probably speaks to who she sees herself as: A young, modern business woman unafraid to take chances in every aspect of her life. Remember all those boring pantsuits that Laura Bush trotted out? Ick. I'll take Shelley's mistakes over Laura's attire anyday!
Good for her.

I meant assets, not outfits. Boo me.

Why does Shelly want everyone to think her waist is right underneath her bustline? That empire waist silhouette looks good on pregnant women and very thin teenagers-- no one else.

Fire your gays, Shelly, and hire TLo! Stat!

Isn't a belt supposed to cinch at the waist, not directly under your boobs? I just don't get it! It must be intentional because she always wears her belts up high like that. Very unflattering. Unsolved mystery.

(Needless to say, I still love her, even when she wears those goofed-up belts!)

The girls are being crushed! Give them some much needed breathing room!

Shelley is one sexy lady (how refreshing to say that about the First Lady). No more boob belts!

That is an ugly belt, Givenchy and all.

I like the jacket on her, and it would have looked fine without that hideous horizontal hunk of hide. I'm sorry, but throwing on a belt does not create the illusion of a narrow waist; quite the opposite. Someone should turn her in to Stacy & Clinton.

It's ironic that she would go to a GBLT event and look so un-fab.

She gives everyone that look!

I like the jacket and the bracelets, but I'm not feeling any love for that belt.

Shelley O is a first Lady...not a fashion model. She is not entitled to satisfy your flamboyant rainbow-colored fashion cravings. Geez!!

The event got a mention in Metropulse, the alternative weekly here in Knoxville (like City Paper, Voice, etc.) One of our locals was at the event:
The 17-year-old rising senior at West High met the president and his wife in the White House on Monday. His parents, Cliff Honicker and Jackie Kittrell, no strangers to activism of several sorts, came along for support. They got to meet briefly with the Obamas privately, albeit briefly, for a photo opportunity.
“Hello, Mr. President,” Conrad Honicker said to Barack Obama himself. “Thank you for being a visible ally for teens like me.”
Obama didn’t respond directly, but took a good look at the young visitor and said, “Man, those are the coolest shoes that have ever been in the White House.”
Alas, no photo of the shoes. The full story is here:
http://www.metropulse.com/news/2009/jul/02/obama-liked-conrad-honickers-shoes/

You're DEADL wrong. She looks great! No wonky sweater, weird plaid pedal pushers, colors that clash. Just nice sophis neutrals that let her beauty shine....

I think it's all cute, except the belt.

The belt makes the short jacket look even shorter, and thus unfitted.

But I have no problem with her in neutrals this soft. It is a White House business event, not really a garden party.

" Afrika said...

You have no problem trashing, criticizing everybody's looks on this blog, even calling Daniella a "fat ass," but god forbid anyone here say anything about Michelle Obama.

Hypocritical much, AFRIKA?

I don't get why she wears the belt so high up. She needs new gays.

ok - maybe for the heathcare thing she was going for labcoat chic?

but for the lgbt event.... girl shoulda brought it. one minute alone with any diva in that room & she would have been 10x more stylish.

where are the white house gays??

When I saw the picture of Shelley O in the paper in that outfit, I said to myself "I know what TLO are gonna have to say about that!"

yes, definitely a belt intervention is in order. Our First Sistah is too beautiful to be hiding her light under such fugly belts.

I think I'd like it full length, with the pants to give the eye a "rest", but from the waist up? There's a lot going on.

Also, I think her natural waist *is* very high, and while wide belts aren't super flattering to that, there isn't anything she can do to change where her waist is.

She is the first lady; it is probably safest for her to be boring. And, she is still better, fashion wise, than just about any first lady since Jackie O. That said, yeah, the belts are okay sometimes but all they time? FAIL.

I love her so very much. But the belts? HAVE TO GO.

On the one hand, yay for hosting an event targeting the LGBT community in the East Room of the White House, (has such a thing happened before?), on the other hand, she wore that?!?!?! I am LOLing so hard over that. All those gay gasps that just died on the vine.

The blouse is fab.

Personally I love the neutrals on her. Her skin is such a gorgeous glowing chocolate... She doesn't need rainbow colors all the time.

I'll agree with the consensus on the belt issue.

I actually like that top and its interesting neckline. But it gets all bunched up with the addition of the belt, which is just so unnecessary, especially if the top is tailored anyway (which I would think it is). But the neutral color itself looks nice with her skin tone.

Does anyone know who she is wearing? The top looks ill-fitting and poorly sewn. The seams need to be pressed.

And Afrika, the only reason Shelley is on this blog is that she is as or MORE fabulous than any fashion model or movie star. We just want to see her looking as beautiful as she really is because we are so proud of her.

Props to her and the hubbie for supporting gay, bi, and transgendered youth. I love his comment to the young man with the shoes!

P.S. I think she is high-waisted (look at those LONG legs) and just should stay away from wide belts. That is just where they're going to fit on her; it's not an intentional Empire waist.

Not much to say.

Nice outfit but the belt killed it.

I was wondering when you girls were going to get to this.

When she wears those belts so high up along with her posture, it reminds me of the little old women (and men) who wear their pants up to their chests. Please TLo, do this country a favor and offer your style advice to the first lady! She needs your help.

Amy

TLo,
You are correct Shelly O has reached the boredom point and beyond.

Please post pictures and comentary for bogging on Dr. Jill.

I dig it. Jewelry & silhouette are fashion-forward and you're wrong about the gray, it really does make her skin glow - as noted above.

Afrika, I think you mean WE are not entitled to EXPECT her to satisfy our flamboyant rainbow-colored fashion cravings, or she is not OBLIGATED to satisfy our flamboyant rainbow-colored fashion cravings. But she certainly is entitled to do that, if she wants to.

You know, it's not the best outfit ever, but I think she still looks great. Kudos to Shelley O.

I don't mind her occassional tit slings, but this is borderline obsessive behavior.
And Shelly, if you MUST wear them, please, for the love of god, find one that doesn't look like that!

Oh lord, this was not the post to send me off for the Major American Holiday. That belt is bad. It looks just like another one that you posted about a few weeks, ago, isn't it, TLo? You don't have to answer. It's gross.

Don't mention the designers, it would be harmful!

I'm not feeling so much bored, as I am a tad disappointed in THE BELT. Maybe she is into belts like some of us are into handbags and shoes.
It might just be a belt fetish!
I love Shelly O, but the belts gotta go.

I just do not understand the whole belt-right-under-the-boobs look! She's tall, she's gorgeous, she can wear anything and this is what she chooses?

"But I have no problem with her in neutrals this soft. It is a White House business event, not really a garden party. "

Oh, where were you on D-day?

Y'all realize that she's creating a tax liability with all the fashionista stuff, right? And almost 10 % of the country is out of work?

(Including her stylist.)

Can you PLEASE introduce Shelly O to the Fabulous Ms. Bennett. I am sure she can make her some wonderful and interesting looks.

Couldn't you all picture Shelly O in the "For Nuts Only" Dress.

another laura

She ought to get that jacket Merlin designed on this week's TFS for the Fall. Wouldn't she rock that?

And yet, look how GORGEOUS she looks.

I WAS WONDERING THE SAME THING KIRA!

MAYBE ONE OF THE CONTESTANTS ON THE FASHION SHOW MADE IT!!!

YOU ARE SOOOO RIGHT-ON WITH THAT. THE HIGHER THE AGE, THE HIGHER THE WASTEBANDS.

100% AGREE

I want to like the top but all I see is a BIG SHINY SCARY BELT

Save me from the belts, they haunt my dreams

um someone complaining about her buying expensive stuff
I believe president Obama issued a freeze on all salary increases in the white house his first week in office. I may be wrong about how exactly that works; but he is free to spend his paycheck on whatever he wants, and let his wife handle however much she wants too. Its not like she's swiping some Congress Credit Card to buy these clothes from taxpayer money that wouldn't otherwise go to her family.

I kinda dig the style of the top. But OMG I am going to turn into Mommie Dearest and start screaming No More Belts if I see FLOTUS with one more gigantic belt worn so high.

That's EXACTLY what I thought of and wanted to say.
SO unflattering!

She gives me the impression she *knows* she's a high-waisted woman and is desperately hoping that a wide belt will sit lower on her hips to give her some lower 'waist' definition to her silhouette.

But it invariably, like the rising of the sun and the setting of the moon, creeps up to natural her waist and seems to get adjusted to fit there some time after she initially dons the damned thing.

In which case, she's like a lot a lot of us women who know.. KnOw... that we don't look good in some style but delude ourselves into thinking we could look good in it if we just try harder.

So I guess in some sense that makes her an everywoman.

However, having said that, she's been in delusion long enough about this. Time to return to reality and to call Tim Gunn for some help.

I'm afraid she's in a denial that may outlast the term. I think she likes the idea of having a small waist, but she doesn't seem to comprehend that hers is very short, and she's too busty for a belt of any kind. A long, unbroken tailored line will always make her look fantastic, and she needs to just accept that and use it to her advantage.

The jacket is actually very pretty--but it is not meant to be "interrupted" by a big, fat, gleaming (yet) belt. I'm sure it's meant to be soft and curvy, with a clean flowing line--it would actually have minimized her bust a bit, and made her waist look less short. The colour isn't the best for her, though. She really does look best in rich colours, she should always wear them. The pale neutrals wash her out.

With regard to the colors: A point that is being missed here is that the FLOTUS cannot be allowed to outshine the POTUS. If she wore jewel tones, she would be the focus of attention.

That's ridiculous. This isn't a monarchy and no such tradition exists. There are no color restrictions on what the first lady can wear. In fact, there are no restrictions at all. She is free to dress at her whim, like anyone else.

Those posting that she should dress better for a LGBT event?? Seriously, BO is all talk when it comes to supporting the community - but has no problem sticking his hand out for contributions. After all LGBT donors are not going to give to Consrvative/Republicans.

When is the LGBT community going to stop the love and realized it's being used?

Oh and she looks messy and wonky in that top.

Politicians not really caring about people that are going to vote for them anyway? No way!

So not nice to make me snort/laugh at the first lady...

I actually love that jacket -- it's interesting and shows something can be flattering without being tight -- but yeah, she always wears those belts too high and it just ruins it. Makes her look matronly. MOVE THE BELT DOWN TO YOUR WAIST, PLEASE!

new stylists NOWWWWW

I have a theory that she tried to get better gays, but they all turned her down because of the whole Obama DMA/DADT debacle.

You know what? I stopped at the GLBT celebration at the WHITE HOUSE line and lost my frickin' mind with joy. She could've shown up in jeans and a t-shirt, and I'd have given her a big old IN.

i'm not dorothy gale

I would have loved to see her in a tunnel neck sleeveless tunic with the silver belt closer to her hips, same jewelry and skirt.

Looking at First Ladies over my (long) lifetime her look is the most interesting since Jackie's. Thank God we have a First Lady who doesn't wear those stiff ladies-who-lunch suits and helmet hair.

Dear Shelly,

If you buy a well fitted bra you won't have to have those horrendous belts holding your boobs up.

Just thought you might like to know.

People, take a look at Mrs. O's body. Follow the leg line up past her hips and you will notice that ,yes, her waist is that high. She is a tall leggy women who is short waisted.

Now,while I agree that I have tired of the belt there are few options for a women who is her waist hit where hers is. My suggestion, thinner belts or dresses that are tailored for her frame.

I like her bracelets and the fact that she was at a Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Pride Month event--did Laura Bush ever do that?

I like the outfit pretty well, even THE BELT. However, as many others have said the location of the belt is crazy. Yes, she's long-legged and high-waisted but in most of the pictures that belt has be be around her rib cage. Looking at those pictures makes me uncomfortable.

High waisted pants also belong no where near a high wasted woman. Way to make yourself look like you have no torso.

She's doing it again in the current pictures of the Moscow visit. ARRGH! I'm going to start a conspiracy theory that she's actually pregnant. There is no other excuse for wearing a belt that high.

move the belt 4 inches (can't tell scale for a woman her height) south and change the color of the jacket and she would be golden.
she's trying to emphasize her bust when she should be looking to create a waist.
somehow, i think that there is a stylist somewhere in her past that told her that an empire waist is her friend, but she didn't like it so she tried to create a similar effect.

Geez too many people are duped by the media to believe that D's are their friends and R's are the enemy.

Two examples to your question...

AND BTW these were not events where there purpose was to put their hands in anyone's pocket! (Not fundraising)

Bush put more $ behind AIDS research and has had the SAME POLICY on GITM as Clinton AND BO.

OMG she looks like an Amazon - or just freakishly large in this photo...
