Scarlett Johansson: The New Face of Mango

Scarlett Johansson was announced as the new face of the Spanish retailer Mango at Santo Mauro Hotel in Madrid, Spain replacing Penelope Cruz.

This one spawned a just-concluded ten-minute discussion, kittens.

Tom was arguing that the outfit, while composed of nice pieces separately, looks like it was decided upon by committee at the last second. She just doesn't look well put-together. It's like a bunch of frantic PR people realized at the last second that they forgot to pick an outfit out for her and ran screaming through the racks of the store, grabbing anything they could find.

The top isn't the best choice for her figure. It's not awful; it's just doesn't seem like the best choice for "showing off our wares," we would think. The shoes don't go with the outfit at all and while the skirt is nice and fits her well, doesn't it look a little... we don't know, sloppy? Lorenzo was all "Where? Where is it sloppy?" and Tom just pointed to that sad little bow. "Doesn't that look a little half-assed to you?" Lorenzo tried to theorize that the skirt may have lost something in traveling and Tom said "She has to walk like ten feet, stand, pose, and walk back. It's not like she got there early and set up chairs."

Look at the shot of the model wearing the same skirt. From the top to the tights to the purse to the shoes, she's styled WAY better than Scarlett is here.

Ditto on the skirt. Love the color of the top, hate the top itself. And those shoes are horrible. Then again I've never liked shoes with that little platform thing going on in the front when it would look way better without that. My question is why did they pick her of all people for the face of a Spanish retailer?

I agree...a bit sloppy. Her hair isn't helping the situation. Love the fresh-face makeup, though. I think the blousey top makes her waist look tiny. The shoes are out.

Oh, come on. She looks good!

Agree with TLO.
But I also got an late eighties (?90's?) go to work vibe off this.

It looks like a Proj. Runway challenge outfit.

Nice in concept, but hastily sewn and styled.

Oh, and those shoes are butt-ass ugly.

It certainly doesn't look like a launch outfit, but I like her dark hair.

It actually looks like dark, blah crap that Daniella would make, and of course, be rewarded for.

Oh my god, yes, it does look like something Daniella would make.

All I can think of is Chris Kattan as Mango on SNL. Sorry, I digress.

The skirt is cute, and even the top, but worn separately.

Definitely! I remember wearing this sort of outfit in the late 80s. The very high waisted skirt with some sort of blouse puffing out over the top. It's not a good look for women with a larger bust.

The shoes are awful. :(

See, I love the shoes. Just not with the rest of the outfit. The whole outfit makes it look like she lost a bet.

I think she looks gorgeous. Usually she's pushing and scrunching her boobs til they look tortured. You can tell she's well-endowed without seeing cleavage.

I don't know about the "sad" bow but I know I want that skirt after seeing it on her.

And the shoes - yes. With that outfit - no.

"See, I love the shoes. Just not with the rest of the outfit. The whole outfit makes it look like she lost a bet."

I agree-- couldn't the shoes have been black, at least, like the ones in the photo? And that top is blousing in all kinds of funky (and unflattering) ways.

The shoes aren't that bad, but they look cheap. I like the skirt.

the first lulu

Well, I guess I'll just be contrary here >;
I think she's darn cute, I like all of it.

Something about the way she's standing--with those pigeon toes--irks me. Like she's a coy 4-year-old. It's not a good look for an adult.

That's all fine and good for a regular person. Scarlett Johansson is great and all. But I'd love to come back in the next lifetime looking like Penelope Cruz or Bianca Jagger.

The shirt confounds me. Does it have a little short elfin vest of the same color and material? Or is a scarf or something? Weird blouse.

Scarlett ALWAYS stands with her toes pointed in; I guess it's like Ms. Lohan's new finger in her mouth. Neither are cute, btw.

I agree with everyone else; as separates, they're fine, but together it's a big sloppy mess.

I love the comment about setting up chairs. Awesome!

I ageee 100% You can't hit a grandslam out of the ball park every time. Scarlett looks good.

I think the problem with the skirt on ScarJo is the length. On the model, it hits right above the knee; on Scarlett, it hits precisely at mid-knee. Isn't that supposed to be exactly the most unflattering skirt length for a woman?

She also looks like she forgot to finish putting on her makeup. Those nude lips are just washing her out.

like all the pieces....separately.

together, they detract from each other and make her look like a gaudily-wrapped gift.

her waist does look tiny, though there are surely better ways to get the same result...

Interesting that ScarJo would replace Penelope for a Spanish retailer, after they were in Vicky Cristina Barcelona together which was set in Spain. Remember when the made out? Ahhh...anyway.

I think she looks good, in general, but putting up that picture of the model with the skirt shown as it's meant to be, pressed and starched or whatever the hell, she does look a tad sloppy. Her hair, too. But...she's hot.

"She has to walk like ten feet, stand, pose, and walk back. It's not like she got there early and set up chairs."

another reason why i love you bitches!

LMFAO!

You bitches are fun even when you fight!

Only models seem to look good in these new clod hopper shoes.

I know matchy-matchy is out, but the shoes would have looked better if they were more black than brown, rather than the reverse.

HATE the top. Somehow it gives an aura of "middle-aged buxom aunt battleship" that I don't think was the intended effect. Veering towards, but stopping well short of, Dame Edna evening wear.

The skirt is a very cute piece, but could have been an inch or so shorter.

Karma! and not re ScarJo

Ha-ha-ha

If she weren't Scarlett Johansson and "The New Face", she would look good, like if she were just Suzie Podunk from somewhere in the Midwest. BUT, she IS a celebrity AND a new face for the line AND she looks incredibly dull.

hmm this is the second time, someone has posted about mid-knee. I'd always heard that knee length was THE most appropriate length. Not too short and PLEASE not hitting mid calf - at the widest part of the calf!!!

I adored her as a blonde, to me she looks generic now.

saw the photos from her ads for this company somewhere and she looked much better in those (she was back as a blond), appeared much more likely to sell product than this photo, which is very eh.

I think she passes the 5-second test--if you look at her quickly, she looks great. If you linger, however, it becomes less-and-less put together.

I wonder why they decided to replace La Pei.

ScarJo is very pretty, but Pene is striking.

If Scarlett Jo would just learn how to STAND, think how much better she would look in everything. Her trademark pigeon-toed, rounded shoulder stance doesn't do her or her clothes any justice. Stand straight, woman!

Mango does not make clothes for anyone C-cup or higher, as exemplified by the fit of the blouse she's wearing. Why they chose Busty Johansson mystifies me.

I think the ensemble is not Special enough for either Scarlett or to provoke excitement about Mango. It's almost like the stylist thought, 'Well, she is an American starlet, so let's be more casual, less structured, a little messy~like she chose the pieces herself from her own closet prior to jumping in to her SUV to meet her agent for a quick lunch.' What a disappointment overall. Her hair looks great dark, though.

I'm with Trinny and Susannah on this one (from the original UK What Not To Wear): "Never wear black with a colour. It makes the black look boring and the colour look cheap." Here both look cheap, but Mango really is only a high street brand with hiked-up prices, so I wouldn't expect much else.

Personally, I think she looks fantastic - love the color of the blouse and it didn't occur to me that it wasn't flattering. The skirt - VERY flattering! (Wish I could wear a pencil skirt like that, but alas, my pear-shape...) And I even like the bow.

I do agree with the previous comment though that black shoes would look MUCH better, but otherwise, I give her two thumbs up.

I think she looks nice - better than she usually looks in fact - but not spokesmodel nice. Not by a long shot.

That top kind of reminds me of Reco's top on TFS - the one that bombed his otherwise rockin' outfit.

ScarJo has just too much going on here. Of course, if she'd just brought her husband, we'd be looking at him, anyway.

She's absolutely gorgeous. But I don't like the hair. It's a little too Dorothy after visiting the Wizard's salon.

Ha Ha Ha, Ho Ho Ho and a couple of tra la la's. That's how we laugh the day away in the Merry Ole Land of Oz!

But I digress. She looks better as a blonde. As a buxom blonde.

it's Chicago Laura, now.

you know? it all went downhill when she got that godawful tattoo.

Love ScarJo. Just love her. However, this outfit is making me flashback to what I wore to prom in the late 80's.

AT the knee looks good on almost noone. Half inch above, fine; half inch below, fine. Also, Amen to the rancid tat comment.

SJ is a beautiful woman, and this outfit makes her look like the Nordstrom's girl who squirts eau de stink on unsuspecting customers.

I think she looks fantastic. I don't really see what's wrong here.

another laura

She actually looks her age now, which is a good thing. Young, fresh face, more natural hair.

the outfit? Not good.

Yay, it's one of my girl-crushes! I like the outfit, but I agree about the sad bow. And the skirt has a little pouchy effect over her lady-bits that I'm not a fan of.

LaFemmeFataledeNY

No, it looks chip in a chip way.

LifeTimeForHomos

She is fab but the outfit is not. And the hair...the horror.

I'd remove the bow and change the heels. I like her hair and makeup.

Agree this look is a bit late 80's secretary, but overall I think she looks just fine. Not special or great, but just ok.

My first thought on seeing the whole ensemble - hair, outfit, everything - was that she looks like me when I used to work in an office. 100 times better, but still. This just looks like a semi-nice outfit you'd wear to a conference or to work. Not high-powered work, either. Maybe work when you're meeting the girls after for a drink.

I like the shoes, prefer them in black. But this just seems kind of PLAIN for a fashion launch/publicity sort of thing. shouldn't they want her to look FABULOUS, instead of just okay?

Moi said: But this just seems kind of PLAIN for a fashion launch/publicity sort of thing. shouldn't they want her to look FABULOUS, instead of just okay?

That's exactly what it is. I was expecting to see something fabulous. I mean - Scarlett Johansson; The New Face of... But I know nothing about Mango. Maybe they don't do "fabulous".

At any rate, she's lovely as always. But, as Anonymous (gg) said, she's dressed like a secretary. In fact, she looks like some of the better paid legal secretaries I worked with in the early '90s. And that's not good enough for a launch party.

No excuse. Somebuddy somewhere should be reprimanded. I can see myself in the mirror as I dressed as a temp in 1986, and even I knew it was an off look (one of those days). THIS IS PR AND A GIBILLION BUCK THINGIE?! Sorry, this is a boo boo for anything but the "typing pool".

P.S. With a shape like that to hide it under a barrel is a felony.

I so want that skirt! And the shoes that were on the model!

People had a couple of the ads from this campaign online:

http://stylenews.peoplestylewatch.com/2009/07/13/scarlett-johanssons-mango-ads-revealed/

think she looks better in these photos but it's interesting the difference in "look" between what she wore at the launch vs. the actual ads.

I'm not really noticing the outfit. I'm just thrilled to know Penelope Cruz is gone. I have never understood her appeal at all... she has no space between her nose and upper lip. She has no sex appeal (granted, I'm gay, but she's still blech). And her acting talent is only marginally mediocre. Love Scarlett!

Love the outfit but not on her or with those shoes.

IN. She's one my favorite actresses.

Yah, this is a woman famous for her rack and it has been subdued by that blouse. No one wants Scarlett's boobs subdued. (heee)

I love Scarlett, you shoud post more on her! As for the bow - couldn't agree more, it's terrible. But I think the problem with Scarlett here is that she looks like she works as a secretary for a really small firm and thus has a really small salary.
