Project Runway Season 6: Meet Irina Shabayeva

Moving right along (because we've got a lot of ground to cover) ...

Irina Shabayeva
Age:
27
Birthplace:
The Republic of Georgia
Current Home:
New York, NY
Favorite Designer:
Jean Paul Gaultier
Style Icons:
Sophia Loren, Cleopatra, Queen Elizabeth
Favorite Past Project Runway Designer:
Rami Kashou, Season 4

Though an immigrant from the former USSR, Irina would never be mistaken for anything but a full blown New Yorker. Currently living on the Upper East Side, Irina attended Parsons The New School of Design, where she first realized her true design potential. Her aesthetic is focused on sexy and ultra-feminine designs with a European flair. She describes her biggest weakness as her desire for instant gratification.

Why she’ll win?
Irina says she’ll win because she is “the best” and will “save the world, one dress at a time.”

Tim Gunn: "Her models look as if they've been in for a dozen fittings, and they haven't."

Align Center

Y'know, Tim was right about that, because it's true, looking at these pictures from her S/F '08 collections, we have to say that every look is particularly well-fitted. Still, it's not exactly to our taste. Who knows what she'll be like on the show and whether or not her style has changed since these collections, but we're seeing an awful lot of '90s-esque lingerie-inspired looks. Lots of shiny-shiny. Not really our thing.

We have no predictions as to what she'll be like on the show but we're kind of hoping she's a huge bitch and a pain in the ass. Why?

Because we'll have the utterly unique experience of being able to pick up the phone after an episode and yell at the two people who cast her on the show. "What were you THINKING?!"

Alas...

She seems kind of sweet. Damn. Nice apartment too.

If this wasn't enough Irina for you (and remember, the goal is to COMPLETELY prejudge these bitches before we see a minute of S6), by all means, head on over to her myLifetime.com page for a tour of her apartment (and closet) or even fashion tips, Georgian-style.

What she is wearing in that pic is more for Kit Pistol, but definitely not her.

As far as the others, I like the coat, but the rest is okay, not bad.

hate the shiny fabrics.
and, wow, her clothes sure are low cut... even the ones she has on the hangers.

but you are right that she is really sweet. I don't think she will get any good bitch lines off, but she may be the one who breaks down in tears.

I find it fascinating to read which PR designers are the contestants faves. There's so little overlap with what I consider to be my faves. I wonder if that's indicative of the differing perspectives between clothing designer and clothing wearer, or if it just means I have bad taste.

Hmmm, the stuff is okay, I guess.

As long as she's not another Kenley or Daniella, fine by me.

The flower-inspired "fantasy trip to Thailand" dresses that she has sketched look really promising....love all of the color and flowy-ness. Also, hand-tooled leather bags?!?! Seriously?! That's awesome, I want one. And not to carry a dog around in. If she actually did the tooling on those, then she might want to consider doing that full time...that's some crazy talent.

The clothes shown here has a certain family resemblance to that of the 2nd runway collection that showed at Bryant Park. That collection also had its "shiny" elements.

Can we NOT talk about the final collections yet? The show hasn't even started yet. Please don't spoil for the rest of us.

I like the first coat. I would totally wear that. Her designs are very feminine and so different from Ari Fish's conceptual vision.

I can see their calling her in for a face to face because of the flower inspired dresses.
I can see them showing her the door because of the execution of the nightgowns that resulted (or is that another fad that will be new again.)
I don't like the colors or the fabrics that she used.
And when the dog gets more photo time than her creations, something's wrong.

C'est moi, c'est moi Lola

Well, short & shiny - she's got 2/3 of Heidi's vote...

Her personal style seems very Russian - showing off the rack & ass, but I'm not so keen on her collection.

I'm hoping Irina and the other Russian in the competition can give us a good dialogue in their mother tongue.

As long as they don't refer to St. Tim or Duchess as 'zvolich' or 'govniuk'....

pretty in theory, chip in execution.

*shrugs*

I like most of it since I love lingerie-inspired clothes. She's cool, I like her.

For some reason she reminds me of Nekisa from Shear Genius- maybe it's the long dark hair and the boobs?

No matter what though, I just can't get behind someone who carries their dog in their dog in a tote.

Isn't the first model Lisa from ANTM Season 10 or something?

Also, I'm very excited about the fact that they will finally go back to the best season 1 model and give more coverage to the models and their drama.

"Can we NOT talk about the final collections yet? The show hasn't even started yet. Please don't spoil for the rest of us."

Who's talking about the final collections? We're talking about the clothes shown at her audition and the ones she's working on at home.

Why don't you read all the comments carefully before you reply to mine?

Oh, shiny, shiny, shiny...Heidi will want one in every color.

So far, I'm really impressed with the designers they've picked. At least they know how to sew and have a point of view.

GO IRINA!!!!!!

Final collections were shown on here by TLo a number of months ago. While Bravo and Lifetime put up their fists and worked it in court, PR6 was still filming and the final show came and went. So its not really a spoiler... you can back track and see them yourself or its on you to avoid spoilers, not us.

I really like #1 and #6. WHAT is uop with the model in #4????

I understand that, but they don't need to be discussed HERE or in any other post not related to the final collections, that's all I'm saying.

"Why don't you read all the comments carefully before you reply to mine?"

I did. Who's talking about the final collections?

There's very little I like in her collection. The styling is pretty awful too. I see no European flair here; it all looks pretty Brooklyn to me.

Pretty designs, but those shiny fabrics are not to my taste. Ditto the colors! Can I have these in a different fabric, please? :)

I think I get it: "... sexy and ultra-feminine designs with a European flair" equals "howear" - ?

I can totally see Jean Paul Gaultier in her collections.

Lots of lace, is that why Laura picked her?

She must be doing well, that is a very nice apartment in NY. I like how she plays with different fabrics and textures. I'm curious to see what she can do on the show.

Dsoma, nice apartments can be provided by others. Not that there's anything wrong with that....

And Emmett looks fabulous!!!

Laura too, of course.

While I can understand not wanting to be spoiled, someone speculating that final collection #2 might kind of match her aesthetic doesn't really tell you all that much. They aren't giving any details as to what the collection looks like, and with 16 designers I'm sure more than one of them might match some of the final collections.

I've looked at the collections and I'm not sure I agree that any of them would belong to her (based solely on a few preshow photos). My point being, vague speculation is not equivalent to a spoiler.

Awwww.....I so freakin' miss Tim!

I don't like the shiny - I'm in good shape, but that much satin shows every little flaw - but I like the lingere inspiration.

Probably because I am too young to have done it the first time around. Way back in the 90's elementary school was not the place for hoochie wear. I hear thats changed....

And, shes beautiful. This seems to be a particularly attractive - and diverse - cast.

excuse my dashes - not sure what my problem is today ------------

I like her collections, but they could be edited a little bit and look even better. I can't wait to watch this season.

She lives in Brooklyn , right? Love her!

I doubt very much.

Her collection reminds me of Uncle Nick, I don't know why.

I'm not into all the shiny satin nightwear, but I would kill for the fur-trimmed grey jacket.

Actually that lace dress (#4) is kind of pretty.

Better than the tacky mess that "My Daddy was a Beatle" Stella designed.

I kinda hate the clothes. And listening to her speak - she sounds like a nice, friendly, next-door-neighbor kind of gal. But the clothes she wears, the clothes she designs and the little poodle dog all scream "tacky Russian drama queen soon to be favorite designer of the New Jersey "Real" Housewives."

I will try to stifle my prejudices. After all, she lives in a city apartment, little precious dogs are practical in that setting. And maybe she thought the great view of her cleavage might be an advantage in an audition tape. *sigh*

Oh, and I almost forgot - Mr. McCarthy - swoon! I thought in the charity fashion show candids that he's gotten even more handsome, now I'm sure of it!

Maybe he just photographs better when he's more relaxed.

I predict that she will be perfectly nice and all the other girls on the show will seethe jealousy at her winning personality and good looks and form a clique which only makes fun of her and her clothes. Before she leaves they will bring her to tears and she will confide in one of the gays "why do they hate me so much, I'm trying so hard to be nice"

Yawnzers.

Nothing I particularly hate about her stuff, but nothing I'd really give a second look, either. My totally uneducated prediction: construction skills will get her past the trainwrecks, but she'll be dropped when she makes the same dress for the third time.

Hmmmmm....what does it say when the highlight of the audition video is seeing Laura, Tim and Emmett??
I'm not impressed with Ms. Irina or her designs at this point.

Off topic here, but did anyone else catch Emmett's store on What not to Wear last Friday?

Fun stuff.

I can't wait to see her produce a high-waisted swingy mini-skirt dress with a halter or strappy top for every challenge. Bleah.

Hmm, I'm not really feeling it. I guess she really loves charmeuse.

No. She liveD in Brooklyn. UES girl now.

The coats are nice.

I do also hope she has that brusque Eastern European way of talking with people. It'll make some think she's being dismissive, others think she's being harsh, and we'll just be sitting there enjoying it all.

I'm curious to see more, she does girly and feminine well.

All seems kinda tacky, reminds me of that one guy on PR who designed lingerie (not the one that cried all the time) grr... I forget..

Both coats are to. die.

Model #4 has wonky eyes, wonky lips, wonky boobs and a wonky hemline.

I'm sorry, but if you want to be a professinal designer, you need to get professional photos of your line. These look like they were taken in the hallway at some benefit lunch and fashion show gig.

She certainly enjoys the shiny, and I think Nina and Michael will stop responding to that. But her supposed execution and fit issues will help her so much.

My unfounded prediction: She'll leave midway through the season.

I agree with some here, the coats are very interesting.

I LOVED the bag.

LifeTimeForHomos

She looks like she could cut a bitch, she's fab.

I'm not seeing all that much Sophia Loren in her work. Which is a shame because Sophia is IT for me (yes, I voted for her in the June 30 Virgins vs. Vixens poll...).

The clothes look, um, nice? Just not particularly interesting. Nothing I'd walk across the shop's floor to look at or feel.

I'm hoping she turns into a scheming passive-aggressive diva with a touch of the vicious just because.

And, yeah, I would love it if references to any of the Season 6 finall/decoy collections be kept out of these threads, whether or not photos of the final collections were posted months ago (and blessedly forgotten by me).

I really hope upcoming post-episode threads aren't going to be littered with "well, X did a much better interpretation in X's final collection -- if that was X's in the final collections we saw :::wink, wink:::"-like comments. Hopefully, TLo will set the standard for this exceptional season and everyone will play nicely over the course of it.

I find how to handle these potential spoilers more interesting that any of Irina's clothes.

That's a bad sign, isn't it... .

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzz z z z z z z z

the top righthand model is Lisa from ANTM

Irina is talented with sweater, fur and some leather materials. I guess I have a probleme with her bitchness toward the other contestants. She isn't the best but she is good.
Althea is excellent and so is Carol Hanna. The German woman has her moments (Jordana)
Out the men left, I don't think they were the best technicians but I do hope they do well because they are so hunger for this.

Talented, but also a know-it-all, bitch. Her constant shit talking on the other contestants is tired.

i hat ireana she always talks about shit bot other ppl all she does for living is desigh desigh desigh i undersand when u want to be a deighner practice makes perfect but all she does is gose on about her selfish lonly life

shes gonna end up be rele old liva alone and prob end up regreting never making friends cuz at that age no one is gonna want to be her friend

i hate irena
go die ireana

I can see that her clothes can be wore by some rich women, but I don't know if it is fashion. Quality is sure there, but it lacks...feelings. I can see that she's a good designer, but her personality is so cold that makes her clothes don't have feelings. Her clothes just look clothes that you wouldn't feel that they were personally made for you. When you take them off, you don't remember them.

She better learn to be nice because the way she acts now, I will never buy her clothes!

I don't care if she designs burlap sacks and haz-mat suits....she's hot as the sun. I wish she made men's clothing.

ok i have a lot to say about this girl..but i'm gonna sum it up the best i can

first of all, Carol Hannah should have TOTALLY and UNPREDICTABLY won the show! i mean, she was born with a natural talent! All the other people went to college and took courses that taught you how to design, but she did not!!! she taught herself how to sew and design clothes HERSELF!!! For the high level she reached, that is amazing and not anyone can do that!! she is very unique, and she will be successfull in life!!

As for Irina, she needs to stop thinking that the world revolves around her because it does not!! She needs to stop acting so stuck up all the time, and start actually respecting the people around her, because they will not always be around!!! If she "plans" to be successfull then she needs to understand that not everything is about "im the best and everyone else is shit" because that's all she thinks about! And as for being russian, she can stick it up her ass because she only is making russian people look bad

i'm russian and i hate the fact that she will be representing us!!!

so long to a "successfull" future...

After awarding Irina with the trophy, i guess they should rename the show "Project Cold Heart." love to carol hannah!

"MEAN-A-IRINA"- Logan

irina... you were a bitch on the season. your clothes were okay, but get over yourself - everyone is not copying you....

It was a COMPETITION. A lot was at stake. Irina was a superior designer to the others; it's that simple. Get over it.

If you want to have peace and harmony, build a campfire and invite your closest friends and sing Khumba Ya.

Irina is just getting started.
