Korto Momolu Jewelry Line

It's finally here, poodles! And wait till you see them!

Project Runway season 5 finalist Korto Momolu has launched her jewelry line on her site. Back when we featured the pictures of her Bryant Park show, many of you commented that you would love to buy her jewelry so when we heard about her new line, we picked up the phone and called her to hear more.

Inspiration:
"I tried to do a follow-up on the few pieces that I got to show at Fashion Week. They’re very much Asian and African inspired and it’s a fusion between these two ethnic cultural backgrounds that I really love. I found myself always doing things that are Asian inspired."

Colors:
"I used a lot of the bright colors that I love to use. The ocean greens, really beautiful yellows, purples, and hot fuchsia pinks. Very vivid colors, fun colors, happy colors…those are the colors I really love."

Materials:
"I use a lot of African beads as well as a lot of things made out of resin because my necklaces tend to be chunky and bulky, so I try to use materials that are not as heavy as using the actual stones and metals. A lot of glass beads. Some of the beads are from Ghana, Kenya, and Tanzania. I love texture, there’s a lot of texture, my variation of textures, in all the pieces. I love turquoise. I also used feathers in some of the designs, I’ve always loved feathers and there are many different variations of feather earrings, so I thought “How can I make mine different?” I like the chains and the feathers. It has a soft and a hard feel to it. They’re made out of silver."

"Some of the pieces are one of a kind, especially the really detailed ones, but a lot of them can be reproduced."

She also told us she'll be adding more jewelry to the site in the future as well as launching a handbag line in 2010. That girl is workin' it. Just take a gander at these gorgeous pieces:

Oh, wow! They're gorgeous!

So unexpected, thanks T Lo! Glad to see what she's up to.

I like that her pieces are bold, and I don't think I would be overstating it if I said they were also fresh and original. I especially love the last piece which would make me feel as if I pulled the flowers directly from their roots, shook them off , and wrapped them around my neck and they magically became jewels.

The last piece is TO. DIE.

Thank you for the update, guys!

Saw the pieces on the website, love all of them, I really responded to the "orange warrior", but some of the other names? Skittles and Bits? Korto , please.

Not only is her jewelry gorgeous, but so is she!!
The last piece is especially beautiful. I WANT!!!!

God, I love her! Great pieces!

CanIGetYouAnything?

Fabulous!!!

I love all the colors and chunky beads. Really beautiful work.

Korto, it's about FREAKIN' TIME!

:0)

They are gorgeous, and as many have said, especially the last piece. I love purple jewelry : )

Oh, and whoever did the girl's eye makeup = FAB!!!

she looks great--I want her dress!

Wow, beautiful. Congratulations, Korto! These are gorgeous.

(And in case Korto happens to read this - I hope you'll add descriptive info on your site, like the lengths of the necklaces, kinds of stones, etc.)

Oh wow. I love all of the pieces on her site. I wish I could afford them all.
Great work, Korto!

THESE ARE TO DIE FOR!!! I wish I wasn't broke so I could snag a few.

Is it just me or does Korto look a little slimmer in that picture...either way she looks great.

Hi BB,

She said she'll be adding all that asap, including new pictures of the pieces.

XO
TLo

Freakin gorgeous. Love her.

Good luck on your gorgeous new line, Korto!

FAB! i am not one to wear jewelry but i do know what is beautiful. so good to hear from korto!

Just beautiful. And she looks
wonderful!!!

God, she is so talented! I love those pieces and will buy a few to throw a sista' some capital in these hard economic times, and because they are so freakin' gorgeous. I normally do not buy resins instead of real stones--I'm a jewelry snob like that, and there's nothing like the real thing--but in this case I'll make an exception. I like the heaviness of real chunky stones, but for some it's unbearable.

My whole apartment is done in African and Asian designs, so I totally get her perspective. Fantastic!

Beautiful, Korto!

Fabulous. Thanks! XO, BB

I want the dress Korto is wearing and that last necklace...

Want. Very badly.

Also want the dress she's wearing in that picture. So cute.

LOVE HER. I can't say that enough. Good luck, Korto! Your work is beautiful.

Thanks for this update on Korto and her jewelry line - it's beautiful!

Firstly , Korto looks absolutely beautiful in that picture. I L-O-V-E that dress she has on. Is it made out of burlap. Fabulous.
The jewelry is also very pretty and wearable. I love the deeply saturated colors.
What a wonderful description of the last necklace Jameela, she should use that on her website.

Just beautiful. And she looks STUNNING in that picture. Way to go, girl.

That's what I thought when I saw the pictures. Beautiful flowers and leaves around your neck, and nature. So enchanting!

I really like these pieces! And Korto looks smashing!

The last one is really to die...

I'm not usually into bold pieces, but I can imagine that piece as a part of so many outfits.

LOVE IT!

I love the pieces, and Korto darling, you look amazing!!

Love love love the jewelry BUT...

I. WANT. THAT. DRESS. It's GORGE!

Korto is beautiful. The jewelry is beautiful. Just looking at her jewelry makes me happy. I agree that last piece is fabulous. I want it, now.

Love her. I'm glad she's doing this. Go, girl!

Le sigh. I miss Project Runway. She's so talented...I do hope she's doing well and sell everything she makes.

Great pieces and I don't even wear jewelry much.

Those pieces would look amazing with a strapless dress. I could see Nina Garcia wearing one of these. She loves the big necklaces.

Adorable photo of Korto!

I really love the last one. Gorgeous.

Also, how gorgeous is that photo of Korto?! :)

SO gorgeous! Especially that last piece.

I want every piece. They are gorgeous!

fabulous--each piece is a work of art.

Korto, I love the way you are working with resin. Very innovative - and beautiful.

Thanks for the update TLo - I was thinking of Korto a few days ago and wondering what she is making now. What a lovely surprise!

I want to see more of that dress!

Thanks for the update, guys. Korto was one of my favorite designers on the show. I'll never forget her yellow dress with bright red tomatoes for the first challenge.

I loved the last necklace. Purple is my new obsession this year.

Love the pieces! They're so vibrant and colorful.

Man I love Korto.

The Orange Warrior Necklace on her site is something I as a male would wear. Love it all. Hope she has a lot of success from such beautiful designs!

STUNNING- I just wish I could pull them off, let alone afford them!

bitchybitchybitchy

I love the boldness of Korto's jewelry. I truly think she is another PR alumna who is going to make her mark on the fashion world.

Beautiful pieces. The textures work very well together and give a nice depth to each piece. The colors are lively and, I think, reflective of Korto's spirit.

I could easily see La Nina sporting some of these pieces. Good for Korto! I hope her line is wildly successful. She's a great designer and a very sweet person.

dear god! these are beautiful! the purple stones, gosh! just love, love, love!!!

Don't mean to be Negative Nancy, but didn't Nina kind of get on Korto about the jewelry after the BP show? I think she said that the jewelry was a "distraction".

If so, BITCH Nina! LOL!

I can't wait until she gets some more info on there - I love that this stuff is so gorgeous and somewhat reasonably priced!

Beautiful. Simply beautiful. Congratulations, Korto!

Agree 100%.

I HAVE to have one of these pieces. They are phenomenal. I have honestly not seen any jewelry as fresh and hip and NEW as these in years. Go Korto!

I can't carry off big jewelry, but these are awesome. I can't wait to see her purses. I just love a designer who not only uses color but KNOWS how to use it, like Korto and Uli.

Korto herself is lovely, as usual. I was always surprised at how slim she really was because I think we all had the impression of her being a bigger person. I know when I saw her dressed up instead of in the studio, she was always thinner than I had thought.

Willa Shakespeare

Those necklaces be rocky.

Why there ain't more SPARKLES? I like colors but hot pink doesn't have enough oomph on its own. Pretty, but dull. Korto need to put some Swarovski crystals all up in that bidnass.

For zample, I think the last necklace, the one with the floral motif, would look disarmingly fetching and amazing were it studded with a wide and glorious expanse of rhinestones. They could even be color-coordinated - green stones on the purple, purple stones on the green.

More show, more ho, less poo', Korto.

She looks amazing in that dress. I wonder if it's one of hers? The necklaces are very beautiful, as well.

The Faces of Nahmbia Necklace is to die. Great Job, Korto, and you look HOT in that picture.

Really beautiful pieces. Delicious colors. I also like the way they are presented, haven't seen that before. And such a cute dress.

Kind of like a fabulous dessert after some of the recent indigestion brought on by TFS.

Willa, I know you want Korto to bring the bling, but then they'd look like Chico's.

Maybe the next collection can be sparkly; she's good!

Gorg, gorg GORG!

These are absolutely yummy.

Her jewelry is gorgeous, her dress is gorgeous, she looks gorgeous, what a fabulous post, guys! I LOVE jewelry! I might buy the earrings :)

I want her dress in every color. Could someone please tell Kelly?

I love Korto, love her background and her constant return to her roots. Africa is proud of you, honey.

I hope Shelly O takes a gander at Korto's jewelry....she would look fantastic wearing it!!!

Yes absolutely ...It is dessert after the famine that is TFS

I love the little fish disk up top and would love to have it paired with the blue compound (bead?) in the picture beneath it.

I have a Birthday coming, I think I must go shopping

Korto you are look lovely as usual and I wish you every happy success.

Besides dittoing all the love-drool above, I adore how she had them photographed with the model: Shoulder, knee, thigh, arm -- none of it worn conventionally.

I want the one with fuchsia and clear stones and the fish bead. These are all stunning, but that one in particular speaks to me.

Yeah, but that's the beauty of it. Korto responded - with no "told ya so" attitude, just with this collection of great jewelry!

Gorgeous! I make and sell jewelry as well, and I have to admit that I would definitely buy her stuff, lol.

You don't know how much you miss somebody till you see them again. Lordy, momma, you are looking beeyoutteefull. The jewelry is you, you, you. Love to see it all. Thanks TLo.

"Stone Flowers."

Now, imagine if Korto could style ShellyO. Problem solved and we would all dream well at night.

Beautiful, Korto! Love your work!

Her jewelry is beautiful. She's right, it has a soft and hard feel to it.

Wilma Flintstone jewelry for the New Millennium. I like it a lot.

I just worry about it upsetting the delicate balance of some 6 foot tall, 90 lb. model and crashing her down to the runway.

That's an understatement. She would look absolutely fantastic. Not to mention Korto could probably create some nice type of belt that hits her on the hips instead of the upper ribcage.

Guess I'm the only one who thinks this is art fair craft booth jewelry. It's pretty. But a lot of people can string stones together. Sorry, I'll catch hell for this. But just weighing in another honest opinion.

I can cook too but that doesn't make me a Chef.

So pretty! Korto & her jewelry!

alas.....I'm too short & chubby to pull off wearing chunky jewelry...

But if I could, my first pick would be the Potter's House II necklace!

I just bought a fish pendant that looks EXACTLY like her fish pendant at Michaels the other week!

The thing is, I don't know if either of you have ever been to any sort of African gala or wedding, but that is how expensive African jewelry is made and looks. In the states, we appreciate diamonds, other countries place value on other beautiful materials and natural influences. She is bringing those influences to her collection.

What you find "costume-y" (which, i'd like to see you try to make something that looks that amazing, but i digresss...)is what is high fashion in Africa and India. When I spent a semester in Nigeria and South Africa (I also did Peace Corps for two years in Indonesia and the United Eremites), this is what people (men and women - ergo: http://www.xogallery.com/Jewelry/NigerianCollar.htm) were wearing, not the stuff we wear over here.

Creative and variation makes jewelry beautiful. But we cannot describe in one liner because their are multiple design available in the market but still their are various circumstances where you can make your own choice but still confuse with design. After seen your blog i understood that the design which you are mentioning is very much different to the each one. Good for the jewelery lovers who still believe the creativity and the respect the design.
