In or Out: Jennifer Lopez

Jennifer Lopez celebrating her 40th birthday at the Edison Ballroom in New York City in Roberto Cavalli.

Roberto Cavalli Spring 2009 Collection

This is an illustration of the maxim that the dress must fit the woman wearing it. We're not talking about technical fit; we're talking about, for lack of a better term, "persona fit." If Gwyneth Paltrow wore this dress she would look ridiculous. If almost anyone else wore this dress, they would look ridiculous. But on J Lo? Perfect. It's entirely "her." Lots of skin, lots of bling, jewelry that looks like she bought it off a stand on Canal Street. You don't get much more J Lo than that. Even the 1968 prom hair works. Say what you will about her, but she knows her image and she knows what works for her. IN.

So true! But yes, it looks great on her!

IN. But I can't stand her.

It works for her, but I want to fix her eyelashes. Her right eyelashes look wonky.

IN! She makes forty look hot.

The dress and styling does look great on JLo. However, what is bothering me in the hunched shoulders. i take for granted this is due to the fact that in six inch heels JLo is taller than her hubby. Whatever the reason, the poor posture is not doing her or the dress any favors.

However she does look great overall.

TampaBay

She looks great, but I find it boring because it looks like every other dress she's ever worn. You're so right, though, that it would look ridiculous on anyone else.

In other news, Marc Anthony is looking less like Nosferatu and more like an actual alive person. Progress!

The back is fabulous but the dress isn't all that flattering at the bust.

TLo said..."If almost anyone else wore this dress, they would look ridiculous."

Must admit I think the model looks pretty good in this dress.

TampaBay

I hate everything about this look, but she looks great. That's a Jlo look.

She doesn't look bad, but dear lord she has done this look to death. There's a difference between "sticking with what works" and always just wearing the same thing all the time. On JLo, I have to say...this is OUT. "Out" as in, she was looking like this 10 years ago. You know, when she still had a career.

Canal Street -- hah!

Aimee said it looks like every other dress she's worn; true. But that's because it's a perfect look for her.

Somehow she's a mixture of current standards of beauty/fashion and old school Hollywood glamor. And it totally works for her. In.

I hate everything about her. She tipped my friend a dollar on a 500 dollar bill because they didn't have her brand of water. She's trash.

She's like a Canal Street knockoff Cher.
But it works for her.

I think she would look better if she would wear a little bit of bronzer.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I think the fit in the bust would be perfect if she stood up straight.

Gaudy, shiny, overly made up and too orange...IN!!!

Other Random Thoughts:
Roberto Cavalli was put on this earth for women like La Lopez or vice versa.

Even though Cavalli and Kors are worlds apart as designers, this reminds me of a MK dress that she wore a few years back.

Jennifer Lopez can work nude lipstick like no one else!

If she is going slump like that, then she needs to find a taller husband.

I hope she is as happy and relaxed as she looks. Happy Birthday, Girl - Mwah!!!!!

AMEN, SISTER! I like the cut of your jib!

But isn't she too old for this stupid shit? She's been wearing the SAME DRESS for 15 years

I think she looks great! IN.

Love the dress, not so much the bling.

IN cause it work, OUT cause it's boring. I want to see a new JLo look. In fact I would love to see her do another movie like Selena, where I forget who JLo is an just see character.

The cinnabon on her head is too much. It's a JLo-in (not a universal one).

Yes, it works for her.

But it's worked for her 1000x in the past. It just feels like we've seen this dress on her, which makes it feel tired instead of hot.

The hair is so dated.

Oh, I just took a look at his suit, though. The piping makes it look like a uniform or a senior prom rental.

On a more positive note, they're both looking more grown up, and it suits them. I like seeing a little experience (and, hopefully, wisdom) around the eyes.

Roberto Cavalli + Jennifer Lopez = now that's tacky combo.

It's not even original JLo. More like Julie Christie '63.

That's too much bling, way too much, even for me LOL

The dress looks great on her, I hate everything else.

That is such a "look at me I'm a princess" type of look. I can't stand it.

I don't think I've ever thought, "Wow, her eyelashes are unruly."

Someone's got a LiLash problem...

40 never looked more fabulous, love her. IN, IN, IN.

J.Lo is so fucking tacky sometimes. She looks like Grecian Prom Barbie. We get it Ms. Lo, you like that overly-bronzed and draped look. At least she's not too busy making her constipated "I'm too sexy" pouty-squint Renee Zellweger faces in these for us not to notice her ridiculous mink tarantula lashes. OUT. Out out out out out.

I love the chandelier earrings :)

I'm sorry but that look looks incredibly tired. I know it is so her... but it looked trashy on her ten years ago and it looks even trashier now. OUT

It's.......ok.

My problem is the makeup. I'm sorry, but in that last picture where she's looking up at something she has enough highlighter and contouring on to be the next winner of RuPaul's Drag Race.

BUT.....the dress looks gorgeous on her so I will give her a reluctant IN.

Her eyelashes look like they're going to crawl all over her face.

I have a dress that's almost identical in my costume closet. It's a reproduction of one of the Queen Gorgo dresses from the movie 300. Granted, I don't look as good as JLo here, but Lena Headly pulls the look of much better. I say this is too prom 2009.

To parapharse Pauline Kael: So little of fashion is truly great that if we cannot appreciate the great trash we need to stop fashion blogging and stop goint to the mall. LOL! LOL!

TampaBay

Wow - there's gotta be a lot of tape underneath that dress, holding everything in place! But she makes it look effortless. I agree - In!

JLo is a well-known tyrant, even as far as Hollywood hos go. I can't call this psycho bitch "in" regardless of what she's wearing. She's just too ugly on the inside.

"She's been wearing the SAME DRESS for 15 years"

Yep.

I find her annoying, so I admit that I'm biased. That said, I think she looks like Cheap Prom Hooker Barbie. Blow Ken behind the bleachers, then adjust your tacky jewelry and head back inside!

Also, to Anonymous... Grecian Prom Barbie would work too!

Has she done anything of note lately except dress (yawn) the same way she always has?
I don't like her, never have, but she can work her worn out look and overdone bling. (That wonky eyelash is driving me nuts!)

Now I want a Grecian Barbie.

I do mean the doll, but that would be a bitchin' code phrase.

That dress does look fab on her but the jewelry is a trainwreck. Too big, too tacky, especially since the dress already has strong embellishments. At least not those earings...

Totally agree with Enid regarding the jewelry; was going to say that very same thing. Those earrings look like tennis racquets! Cheri

For some reason, I'm thinking Dean Martin's Gold-Diggers!

JLo is only 40? I swear like she's been rocking that same look for at least 20 years. Maybe it only seems that long.

Just one more metalic gold accent piece and I'll be perfect. There!

Out.

Tacky, sluttish, and cheap, and waytoo much garish jewelry.

ooohh, such hate on me! whatsa girl to do, when she's taller than her hubbie, can't think of anyone else like that canya, oh wait... and I loves me my bling, gold and silver tagetha...you bitches are just J.E.A.L.O.U.S....me lookin so fab at 40!!!!!!

I hate everything about this look - it's tacky, dated and cheap-looking. So it's perfect for her! Except that in some of the pics her arms and shoulders look massive. I know they're really not that big but I don't think this dress flatters her very much.

She looks like a giant next to her husband. She could break him in two any time she wants.

Anonymous at 12:32 PM said... For some reason, I'm thinking Dean Martin's Gold-Diggers!

I love you!!!!!!!

"1968 prom hair"

My prom hair in in 1964 was almost exactly like J-Lo's, only I wore bangs. I was copying Agent 99 in Get Smart, and felt ultra-hip!

I agree, this looks cheap. I know wearing dresses similar to this is what got her attention, but does she have to keep doing it now that her career is established?

IN

She knows what works for her. Nothin' wrong with that.

I read somewhere that Marc Anthony insists that she wear her hair UP when they go out. I don't know why.

She needs a better-looking husband.

IN. She's fab! She looks gorge!

It works for HER and nobody else, does that mean she's tacky?

She looks like she just got all dolled up for her quincenera. OUT.

Agreed. Like her or hate her, she is very consistant with her image. Personally, I like it. I wouldn't wear it myself, but it is good for her!

Only Roberto Cavalli would design a chiffon dress with big hunks of alternating gold and cubic zirconia pave' curb link chain globbed all around the top, and only la Lopez would wear it. If you want JLo, that's what you get. She definitely is consistent.

But someone please comb out those lashes on the right eye!

Wasn't this supposed to be a surprise birthday party? This is what she wears for an unsuspecting night on the town doing any old thing with her innocent husband? I'd hate to see the outcome if she gussied up.

For those commenting on her eyelashes, they aren't any worse than the ghetto eyebrows sported by both (Liberal) Judge Sotomayor and (Democrat) Michelle Obama.

In...but barely. Too much jewelry (I hate the earrings), and the mink tarantulas devouring her eyes are too much, even for J-Lo.

You're right in that this is the kind of over-the-top dress she can pull off when other women can't. But as other commenters have said, she's been wearing this look for the last 15 years now. I shudder to think that 15 years in the future she'll still be wearing this exact look. Hell, I expect we'll one day see photos of her 70th birthday party, and she'll still be wearing the same look, and the same "glow-y" makeup, with nude lipstick and lots of bronzer. (And Beyonce will show up wearing something short and gold--there's another one whose "look" is frozen in amber).

On top of that, her predilection for big '60s updos isn't doing her any favors--they always look heavy and matronly. I always thought her hair looked best when it was medium-length, curly, and worn loose.

You've got to be kidding me-all of that is so out, on so many levels! And what a missed opportunity to reinvent herself and spark some interest.

IN

except for the spider eyes

Anybody calling this "in" automatically loses any right to judge fashion. This look was dated when she started wearing it...ten years ago.

i'm not dorothy gale

Boring. Out.

Good God. She's got more bling than Lil Wayne and Lil Kim's love child.

IN. JLo is paying homage to Miss Liz Taylor in all of her Taylor-Burton 1960s glory! The hair, the makeup, the clothes, and the (smaller, less handsome) 'was married, left his wife and married her as a result of a tumultuous affair' husband are the updated version of that epic love story. She and Marc are now famous for being famous, ala the Burtons, and it is what defines them~beyond being talented. It's almost eerie, actually.

OMG - hahaha, you are so right! Having lived in a border town for many years this is EXACTLY how the Latinas dress up. Too funny.

She's an OUT.

is that model prada girl ymre?

HA!
Maybe he should wear his hair up.
@ least it would give him some height.
Love the Taylor/Burton reference, clearly the 1963-68 years were their gorgeous best.

JLo, while in my estimation can never come close to La Liz (who could make the most outrageous fashion into theater & vice versa), has found her core designers in Signore Cavalli & Donatella Versace. They play to her strengths which flatter her & satisfy her fanbase.
As long as she avoids the turbans & the caftans, we should all be grateful.
IN.

I think TLo has a point and it works. Do we have to like her style to say she is IN? Ah, no. There is no lack of self-love this woman has for herself. Fly Girl no more. Jenny down da block no more. She is a Staaah and staaahs are the act, they don't needno husband prettier than they are. Don't get her started up on that attention grabber again. I recall seeing her draping herself around two more acclaimed H'wood guys one Oscar time. How does one dominate such a picture? They way she did, wearing a see thru top with no bra on (yes I know lights do that to some fabric but this was transparent to start with. Both men had a "get her outta her" looked of entrapment to their eyes. So JLo has a little man and she blings him from here to kingdom come. This is JLo and I do believe it IS JLo's career to overdress, over orange, over-highlight all over, over-makeup, over-hair do and over-accessorize. Next question?

fashionablylate

Take the earrings and the lashes down a notch or two, and she's an IN. But yeah, a new look would be refreshing.

Love it or hate it, just please don't wear a white thong under it...

Go Michelle and Sonya!

Their "ghetto" selves will be more than you'll ever amount to.

Love the dress!

IN. But barely.

I'm guessing more Larry Fortensky

I do not think so as Larry Fortensky was much better looking IMHO.

TampaBay

Rich garbage is still garbage, no matter how famous it used to be.

CLOWNISH! I'm sorry but I think she just looks silly.

Sorry, but Dyanara BETTER!

Anonymous at 7/29/09 11:35 AM said... CLOWNISH! I'm sorry but I think she just looks silly.

IMHO JLo does not look that bad but it is very difficult to do Liz Taylor, Ava Gabor or Raquel Welch better than Liz Taylor, Ava Gabor or Raquel Welch. It is especially difficult to pull off fashion wise if you try to do them all at the same time.

TampaBay

IN... but only because JLo somehow makes "tacky" work for her.

More than Liz Taylor,Eva Gabor or Raquel Welch,
JLo seems to be channeling Princess Margaret during the early heady days of her coupling to Lord Snowden. Except she's showing more skin.

Money can't buy good taste, but somehow she still looks good. It all works for her. Maybe it's because she's so hot.
On another note, I'm not loving the posture. It must suck to put on 4" heels and realize that your husband is shorter than you, but you have to just stand up straight and own it.

Even though her posture is awry she is one classy lady. She wears everything well. IN.

momica in ca

ps: I looked that good at 40... I just didn't have her money to enhance it.

The dress doesn't fit and hello, the '80's are over. Scrub your face, take off all of the cheap makeup and jewelry, get a new hair style. You look ridiculous.

KnitWitNurse

KW Nurse: Lerv your comment, but I reckon that when you go from Fly Girl (look at those pictures, scarey) to fantasy goddess (as her earliest films cast her) that is some heady stuff for a down home girl. Hey, having PLAYED the beautiful Selena (rest her soul) JLo has adopted the right to inhabit the ultimate diva role. The points or price attached? Like Dolly Parton, the makeup and dumb clothes (she thinks she is killing us) will become the schitck ever more. Like Madge, her #1 attribute is BALLS. Get some. He did! (Little man. "Bye Dyanara and kids. I'm with JJJJJJLLLLLLoooo now!" Humbugity...) JLo plays Dodge Em Cars with men and if she has found one that likes how she does that thing she does becuz he is such a man, hey, the world could stand more of it. IN

Ho hum, yeah well, whatever. I just find myself looking at all this nonsense and really missing Grace Kelly!

I think Mariah Carey is wearing a differnt versin of this dress (print fabric instead of white) in her latest video.

TampaBay

Who`s the beautioful model?? There on the picture??
