In or Out: Tyra Banks

Tyra Banks attends the Calvin Klein Collection and Visionaire 56 Solar launch at The Standard Hotel in New York City in head-to-toe Calvin Klein.

Calvin Klein Spring 2009 Collection
Model: Jourdan Dunn

Kinda torn on this one, kittens. Our first thought was "Tyra! You forgot to put on makeup! Get away from the cameras!" But y'know? The more we looked at it the more we thought she looked kinda fresh-faced and about 5 to 10 years younger than she normally looks. And besides, her normal "female drag queen" look simply doesn't go with the austere CK style. It's a bit of a shock to see her like this, but you can tell either she or her stylist gave this one some thought. On the other hand, she's wearing those shoes incorrectly (and they look too small for her) and that dress...well, it ain't the most flattering silhouette for her.

If you've been paying attention, you'll see that sometimes we'll reward someone with an IN even though they made a lot of mistakes or even when they just don't look all that good. There's a reason for that. It's not just about whether the dress is perfect or the hair is perfect or the makeup's perfect. How boring. It's also about the message being sent or the idea behind the look. The Kate Winslet post was a perfect example. She didn't look flawless by any means, but she looked comfortable and she looked like herself, which was a refreshing change, therefore she got the IN.

It's kinda the same thing here. We've seen her look a lot better than this, but she chose a look that's different for her and yet totally appropriate for the event and the clothes. It's nice to see people with an image to protect step slightly outside it every now and then. She gets an IN.

She looks like she's wearing a kind of cute hospital gown.

No and No on the shoes and dress.

Yeah, the makeup is offputting. It looks like she hasn't slept for ten days.

Mrs. P says it best: it looks like a hospital gown. The Amanzingly Annoying Tyra looks like Mental Patient #3 from 'Girl, Interrupted'.

I still kinda like it, though.

Very, very slim in.

Shoes look like Payless Easter specials, though.

IN.IN.IN.

Great summer look for her. Love the semi-fitted look on her. The shoes are okay and the bag is very nice. The low key make up is wonderful.

Was Tyra Banks really ever that great of a model? I'm just curious. I mean, was she just okay who translated that into Diva with shows? Obviously she's smarter than she presents herself, but still...

Anyway, hate the dress and make-up. I like the shoes, but no on her.

The shoes must have been loaners becuase that is the only reason I can come up with to explain the poor fit.

TampaBay

I like the low key makeup, but would it have killed her to use a little concealer under her eyes?

Did the fabric change between the model and Tyra? The dress on the model looks like it flows, while Tyra's version looks more like linen.

i like the contrast of the CK whites with her bronze skin and makeup.

i was about to agree on the concealer...and then i remembered that she's had raccoon circles in white from overusing/underblending concealer (at least on ANTM) so this is actually a plus.

on the whole, rather "Meh" but she gets an IN for effort.

I love the shoes, the dress and the fact that she isn't wearing a lot of makeup. And c'mon, the dress does NOT look like a hospital gown.

Forgot to mention: I've loved this CK collection ever since you guys had a post about it and I've been always curious to see the looks off the runway. I think she looks great. IN.

Isabella, I agree with you. What is so startling is that it is complwtwly different look for Tyra.

Yes, Tyra was a big time European runway model. If you look at picyures of her prior to the age of 25 you can see how skinny she was.

TampaBay

"complwtwly"?

Lilli von Schtupp? LOL!

too many cats

I made that dress from a Burda pattern (in a linen print) in 1966.
It looked better in a print than in white that shows where it held the fold where she sat to ride to the event.

I have only had three cups of coffee this morning!

Out and Out. Sorry - she looks like crap.

i agree that she looks younger. its nice to see something different from tyra.

She's probably wearing the shoes incorrectly because they're too small and hurt! Don't like them anyway.

Dress is okay, but really dont like her hair so dark.

IN.

I'm so used to seeing her so cinched in, pushed up, swagged to death, wigged out, and made up for a Dracula movie that this is utterly refreshing.

Who knew that an actual normal girl lived under all those looks?

I agree with the comment that the fabric seems to have been changed to linen. However, to avoid the usual puddle of wrinkles, the front seems to have been starched into a flat board and she may have been delivered to the event whilst lying down flat in the limo's back seat. The stiff front with its sharp edges is weird.

Perhaps another fabric choice would have worked?

I am very impressed. I agree with BOTH TLo and the commenters on the makeup. I like the toned down, makeup, but the under eye part is not doing her any favors whether intentional or not.

What struck me most about this look is that she looks YOUNGER.
- Is is because she is slimmer?
-Is is because she is darker?
-Is it because she has less makeup?
- Is it because the garment is relatively simple?
-Is it because of the simple hair style?

Whatever it is she looks great!

By the way TLo, this is the first time it is not grating me the wrong way when you say "not the most flattering" when talking about a woman with a woman's figure because this time I actually agree. The CK pieces are works art that are meant to be seen in a certain way, but, like you, I think she still did the dress justice.

And DUH TLo, probably the reason why she is wearing them wrong is because they are the wrong size for her, but I STILL think she is working it.

TLo the mess women have to go through to look good is real and in full effect.

Everyone, PLEASE look at this particular CALVIN KLIEN collection as a whole to see the intent of the collection before judging the garment itself.

Even though I hate the shoes and the dress is just OK, I'm giving her an IN for the make-up and the non-matchy-matchy clutch.

Why, oh why, must these girls cross their feet while having their pictures taken? It always looks like they put their shoes on the wrong feet. It's been a trend for a couple of years and it just looks weird.

Okay, now that I got that out - on to Tyra. Like the dress for a summery look but it's a little too starched looking. Hate the shoes, like her makeup and hate her straggly hairstyle. It would have looked great just pulled back simply. A begrudging IN.

I bet the dress looks much better in person, simple-structured dresses just can't be captured well in photos. I love the shoes. Love. Them.

Tyra looks fresh & pretty. Fresh & pretty while waiting to be examined by her gynecologist, that is.

"By the way TLo, this is the first time it is not grating me the wrong way when you say "not the most flattering" when talking about a woman with a woman's figure because this time I actually agree."

I think you're misreading it.

When they're talking about "not the most flattering" they're not talking about the woman or her figure, they're talking about THE DRESS not being the most flattering ON HER.

It's interesting that when you agree with them, it's no longer an issue for you.

"Why, oh why, must these girls cross their feet while having their pictures taken? It always looks like they put their shoes on the wrong feet. It's been a trend for a couple of years and it just looks weird."

It supposedly elongates the legs to cross them.

Love the dress, hate the shoes.

...a woman with a woman's figure"

Otherwise known as "a woman."

Or is it your contention that there is one type of figure for women and all other women don't have a woman's figure?

Uh, OUT. There's a difference between wearing natural makeup and walking out the door with 10 pounds of luggage underneath each eye. Compound that with the unflattering dress and clompy shoes, and she is out, out out, no matter how hard she's "trying." They're ALL trying and attempting to send 'messages.' By those standards, everyone is in, all the time.

The dress is interesting from an architectural standpoint, and I think she looks good in it. The shoes are an out, regardless of who is wearing them or how. Just too 1970's clodhopper looking for my taste. I like the no-makeup look for a change, though in the closeup she looks really tired.

A qualified IN

I agree with TLO about the actual idea behind the look as being a massive IN. This photo reminds me of why Tyra was a high fashion model. I love her make-up and the idea of the simple white dress. I am not liking the too small orthopedic high heels however.
IN

Agree, the dress looks too stiffly starched. Gorgeous and soft on the model, and that would've suited Tyra much better, I think. And maybe her large breasts make it hang differently? I wish her hair was 4-5 inches shorter and swingy vs. in straggles all over her chest.

Was Tyra Banks really ever that great of a model? I'm just curious. I mean, was she just okay who translated that into Diva with shows?

I'd say she was a great model. "Lingerie model" is often said with disdain, but not just anyone can look that great in almost nothing.

Anyway, I think the dress could be a bit more form fitting on Tyra, but it's such a relief to see her in something simple and pretty after the last few seasons of ANTM. Mr. Jay must be really pissed at her, considering how he's been dressing her for the show.

She does look tired, and the bags under her eyes are closer to a whole set of luggage. Even so, she still manages to look rather young and lovely.

C.C., you make a good point about her hair. If it were just brushing her shoulders, it would be more flirty and pretty.

White shoes should be illegal.

I love Tyra in spite of how batshit crazy she is. A 75% IN.

I like her without the drag makeup. I should like this more, but it isn't working.

Maura said: "I'd say she was a great model. "Lingerie model" is often said with disdain, but not just anyone can look that great in almost nothing."

Agreed! But also, Tyra was actually a high-fashion model before she did swimsuit and lingerie. She did tons of runway in Paris when she was just starting out, and was on the cover of Vogue and HB, among others.

another laura

Borderline IN. Because of the effort she probably went to to fend off her makeup people. However, she needed a little more concealer under her eyes, no? Smiling with your eyes (a Tyra specialty, if you watch ANTM) can't fix that.

Those knife-sharp CK cuts are troublesome for bigger women, and
I really do not like those shoes.

I've never seen any film from her "I went to paris when I was 15 and was booked for all the runway shows) days. Is she great? Who can say; I do congratulate her for working so hard to build her empire-ette.

I think she looks great actually, it's a relief from her crazy look as of late. She looks like herself. kudos, bitch.

I agree that the hair and makeup do look better and that it is an appropriate look for the event and the outfit. The dress however is clearly not meant to be actually worn by a regular person, evidenced by the giant crease formed from the short car ride. And then there are the shoes...ugly plastic looking cheap ass things that I hope to never see anyone else wearing. Ever.

Remember on Project Runway when Laura made a dress out of a white peanut sack? That's what this dress made me think of. Stiff and poorly fit.

Her hair and more natural face do look wonderful.

But it still can't make up for that overpriced hospital gown.

Yes, there are issues here. The dress would have been better and less hospital-y if it were in a color, and I wonder if the shoes would look less cheap in a color as well, but I like the very geometric heel. However, despite the dark circles, I think she looks terrific in a more light coating of slap, and I like her darker hair as well--that "Beyonce blond" look is beyond stale. She looks so much younger. Yeah, more concealer would be good, but just slightly more. Now if she could just scrape off some crazy with that slap :)

Good work, TLo. I would not have seen this pic, probably, on my own. The wholesomeness and wonderful refreshingness puts her in a deserved whole other light. One she needs to give a lot more time to. Looks like Niomi here a bit (which is good) and goes WAY back to the beginning when then did look a lot alike in little clothing on the runway -- she used to be stick thin. The opine of her drag effect (for years now) is well documented here; I didn't know how nice she still could look, nor how young. She seemed dedicated to being "over the hill" (sorry).

Gives interest to the collection, if not this dress, so purpose achieved. Is there any other reason for models? Keep it up, Tyra.

CPK, I tend to forget that she did high fashion before she became a VS model, although it's a mystery how I could, considering she mentions it almost every week.

I too admire her for building her own mini-empire. Oprah and her mother have taught her well.

Am I going crazy or is there a huge photoshop mistake happening in the picture of her and Francisco Costa? There appears to be the random arm of some invisible dude draped over Costa's shoulder.

The dress looks oddly starchy on her as compared with the runway. Maybe it's how she's standing?

Otherwise, I love the color on her and can't say enough about the low key makeup and hair. This is the prettiest and youngest she has looked in a long time-she has to have taken 10 years off. I hate the Dynasty hair on ANTM (at least it's not magenta anymore) and the unflattering, excessive makeup.

Now, if she'd just tone down her persona too, I'd find her attractive again.

I've never seen any film from her "I went to paris when I was 15 and was booked for all the runway shows) days. Is she great? Who can say; I do congratulate her for working so hard to build her empire-ette.

It is not video of her on the runway, but she is in this Michael Jackson video at the end, with all the people morphing into each other. It was filmed around the same time period. She went the swimsuit/lingerie modeling route when her body developed more and she was more voluptuous rather than a twig.

Can it be an "IN" when what I like about it is that she looks so, well, normal? Like she's at the family's 4th of July BBQ - yes, she just happens to own designer duds, so she wore them. And picked something appropriate (and the fear of BBQ sauce stains will keep the girl away from the ribs!)

I love the look, like the dress, not a fan of the shoes but they're okay.

Tyra was the 1st African American model to grace the covers of Sports Illustrated & GQ. She was also on the covers of Vogue, Elle, Cosmo & Harper's Bazaar. Within Banks' first week in Paris, designers were so entranced by her presence on the runway that she was booked for an unprecedented twenty-five shows - a record in the business for a newcomer.
I think that qualifies her as a great model. If you've ever seen the George Michael "Too Sexy" video, et al, her walk was FIERCE!

I love the look. Fresh, modern, unfettered. Love the shoes. The styling is fantastic, she does look younger.
Why the comparison to a hospital gown? Is her tush hanging out in the back? Hee!

Awesome IN.

I like the dress very much. She looks great in white, but it's the simple, architectural lines that really make the dress.

As to the shoes, she's wearing them incorrectly because they're too small. (Of course, they're also ugly.)

I can't stand her, honestly, but have to agree (after some thinking) that this is an IN. At first I was wondering how one can wear shoes "incorrectly," but then looked at the photo of the model wearing them-- oh. Yeah, maybe they were borrowed and she couldn't wear them with the straps in the white place. Still, wouldn't it have been better just to wear different white shoes?

Umm, "white place"? Apparently I need to drink some coffee. Right place.

The shoes are the worst part of this outfit. You'd think Tyra would be able to get her size. The dress could be a little more flattering, but I rather like her curves and it's a shame they're being smoothed over in this dress. As for the face and hair, she looks tired and underdone. There's a large range between where she is and her usual drag queen pancake job. She needs to get closer to it. I agree that her hair ought to be shorter, as it's dragging her face down with it as-is.

Qualified In.

Marginal IN for me. She needs some concealer and better shoes, also maybe a little lotion, those feet are looking kinda ashy

She's not "smiling with her eyes."

And I'm sorry, but I also see mental patient gown. Perhaps if it had some color ?

Nice try but

"Am I going crazy or is there a huge photoshop mistake happening in the picture of her and Francisco Costa? There appears to be the random arm of some invisible dude draped over Costa's shoulder."

It's actually Tyra's hand (her arm it out of view) and some guy's shoulder in the background.

OK, when James Paul started yammering about Rubics cubes and geometric planes, I had envisioned something akin to the dress that Francisco Costa designed.

I like Francisco's design a lot better. On Tyra, it's stunning.

It's a softer look for her. Not so perfect which I like. She'd be better in a more fitted dress I think.

Mariana (The Unoriginal)

IN. It's a fresh and clean look.

No, it was Tyra. But I got the title of the song/video wrong. It's "Too Funky" from 1992.
She was 18 & it was her 1st video.

Naomi was in GM's "Freedom" from 1990.

The shoes look stupid on her because the ankle strap (see picture of the model wearing the shoes)is not on the ankle. She's wearing it on top, as if it was part of the band across the top of the shoe.

The whole look and proportion would have been so much better if she had worn the shoes as designed.

"It's actually Tyra's hand (her arm it out of view) and some guy's shoulder in the background."

Ohhhh, I see that now. Thanks. Man, she's got some scary looking hands.

from the neck up, she's in. Neck down? She's wearing an interestingly designer gown that you would get at only the best OB/GYN's office.

Agree with the IN. I love the makeup here. It is such a refreshing change from her usual made up look.

I think she just looks exhausted. She's beautiful but she works way too hard. Just doing your own tv show would be enough to make anyone overtired but she does that AND the next top model show. She must be working a 90 hour week or maybe even more.

This is a definite OUT. I don't really like the dress, but under different circumstances she could have pulled it off. Three things need to change for this to work: her hair, which looks lank and blah; her makeup, which could be minimal but still cover the circles under her eyes; and the shoes, in any color besides white.

You can look normal AND make an effort not to look like you were going to a picnic on Memorial Day in your aunt's back yard. I don't mean to sound harsh, but when you're a celebrity, people are going to be looking at you.

I really like this look on Tyra. I do think she usually looks overdone, with both makeup and hair. I like the spare makeup and think the simple line of this dress is far more flattering than anything she wore on Top Model all last season.

CanIGetYouAnything?

She looks great! IN.

she looks different than her usual self. but those eyes! her stares! it kills me, so stop doing it tyra!

aneway, i prefer this her to her usual poofy light colour hair, and i think she looked almost like naomi campbell

That's not the dress I'd have chosen for her, but somehow, it works. I also appreciate her understated hair and makeup. Definitely more appropriate for June.

In

I'm sorry, she DOES look like she forgot to put makeup on. Regardless of her normal look, there would've been no harm in a little concealer for those undereye bags.

As far as the event and occasion goes, as someone with a Fashion degree, I always look for a little more leniency given to stars who wear their designers to events or shows (Scarlett Johansson in b&w leopard D&G in Italy recently, for example). Saying this, there are plenty more FLATTERING Calvin Klein looks for the women who have a little more meat on their bones, and Tyra should have gone for one of those... and shoes that went with her dress, let alone ones that fit. Even the runway version of that white dress had simpler shoes.

I'm sorry, I usually love you guys and agree with you, but for me, this is SO far out.

I would say IN. She does look younger. Normally she looks like a human "Bratz" doll.

I have to go with IN.

It seems she finally has taken the advice she gives ANTM contestants about how to look like a model. Light makeup, non-fussy hair, and a simple frock.

I'm sure next week she'll be back to looking like RuPaul's little sister, but for now she's IN.

Jacq366- I think Tyra's problem is that she likes to over dress up so she will stand out especially on ANTM. Because she is a large woman-abeit one with great proportions-she tends to favor over elaborate fashion confections. Just like her mentor "The Oprah".

TampaBay

The dress: No. She looks like she wandered off a mental hospital transport bus.

The hair: Not crazy about it, it's pretty blah, but I think the darker color actually does a lot to help her look younger.

The shoes: No, no, a thousand times no! They are so clunky and horrible even on the runway.

The makeup: Eh, I guess I see what the makeup artist was going for here, but really, the woman just looks like she's been dead for three days. *gasp* Could this be the Second Coming of Tyra?

I think that Tyra looks *great* when she's smiling in that makeup, but when she's doing her typical Tyra face, it doesn't work.

its a nice dress but it doesnt suit her personality

OUT! She looks terrible!!

Dress - Looks good at some angles, but at other angles the stiffness does not work and widens her.

Shoes - They remind me of shoes that my beloved late mother wore... not a good thing.

Hair - Like the color but it looks straggly.

Makeup - Tyra has been looking does look younger and fresher on the red carpet in recent outings. This particular look is too underdone, she needs to find the balance between Plain Jane and Drag-zilla.

IN - mostly as positive reinforcement in hopes that she will not return to her drag queen look.

OUT. those shoes are doing nothing for her feet.

I love Calvin Klein's work. He actually has his own style, unlike most designers. I love his clean lines, and I love his consistency. This dress is shown to better advantage in the photo of the runway model, but I think it was very IN of Tyra to dress in CK for attending the showing of his collection. IN, definitely. ;)

She looks great, but I don't care for the shoes. Look painful. This plain shift is lovely.
