Fire Island, Part 2: FASHION!

Let's get our fashion on, bitches!

Before we get to the "runway" shots, a little reminder of what we were all doing there:

"Debuting this summer, S.O.S. (Shopping On Sunday), produced jointly by FIPAP and Fund in the Sun Foundation, will give you the chance to combine two cherished obsessions, shopping and working on your tan. With all proceeds supporting LGBT charitable organizations, S.O.S. will feature the most coveted labels from Seventh Avenue, including Calvin Klein, Armani Exchange, Diesel, Prada, Ron Chereskin, and many more. Malan Breton, Emmett McCarthy, and Stella Zotis from Project Runway will present live fashion shows throughout the afternoon under the runway direction of Tom & Lorenzo."

Fabulous for charity, darlings! That's what it's all about.

Now, we weren't planning on stretching this weekend's festivities out to too many posts because that gets a little overkill-y, but dammit, we have so many pictures that we just can't fit them all in anything less than 3 posts. You saw the dinner parties and the hanging out pictures already; this is the runway post; and after that, we'll do the backstage post because you're going to want to hear about the insanity of trying to get 12 consecutive looks out on the runway with only 4 female models, all of whom had to run up a flight of stairs and a ramp just to get from the dressing room to the "runway," with Hal Rubenstein of InStyle Magazine yelling "Send them out faster!" at us.

Yes, one of the models did a header on the runway; no, we're not going to tell you which one. They were working under crazy conditions for free and while we normally love watching a model fall flat on her face (who wouldn't?), we couldn't single the poor girl out. As we said, she was running up stairs and ramps to get to the runway and then had to walk in stiletto heels on a boardwalk. Suffice it to say, she brushed herself off and with a smile and a wave, carried on. The crowd loved her for it.

Malan Breton
We're so glad we chose Malan to go first because we suspect the crowd was expecting nothing more than a half-assed runway show with half-assed fashion and from the second Dayna walked out in that suit, ten feet tall in a pair of platform shoes, you could see the crowd suddenly gain a lot more interest. It was like watching a lightbulb go off. "Oh. This is a fashion show."

All looks were from his Spring '09 collection.

Emmett McCarthy
Emmett decided to have fun with it and, in his words, "gay it up." Since all the designers had the option of using both male and female models, Emmett came up with a "Lady and the Poolboy" concept and had the girls wear items from his Spring line, while the boys wore almost nothing at all. The bitch knew his crowd.

Stella Zotis
We knew, without even looking at her pieces, that Stella was probably going to be a hit with the crowd. When we went for fittings the day before the show, it was confirmed. We were thrilled that the 3 designers all presented such strikingly different collections and Stella's stood out most of all for its sheer craziness (and the fact that all the models looked so hot). When James walked out at the end with the spiked leather helmet and the gladiator sleeve on, you could hear the "oohs" in the crowd. She was a big hit. When we first approached Stella about participating in this event, we wrote "You'll be showing off your shit to a bunch of A-list queens with money! They're gonna LOVE you!" Of course, we were right.

Stella is the fuckin' BITCH, man!

Now THAT was the Bryant Park show I would've loved to have seen! LOVE HER!

Emmett of course, packaged the man candies nicely, and I loved every one of Malan's pieces that Dayna modeled.

That first suit? ~drool~

Gorgeous! I loved Emmett's and Malan's collections. I can't ever be a fan of leather and fur, but I can appreciate Stella's talent and esthetic.

You guys put on an awesome show!!! So when is PR going to have you on as judges?!

NotaMondayGirl

Hey TLo Fam,

First, you two are so quick today! I just finished your TFS post and here was Fire Island pt. 2.

All I can say is Malan's collection was FIYAH! I especially loved that first look and Danya knows how to work a pants suit. Emmett's collection was fun and the mancandy was greatly appreciated. Stella's studs and what not aren't my tastes but the looks are definitely Mad Max Bad Ass.

Sorry, cannot abide the use of flags or representations of flags as fabric for sewing

Not even in the name of "edgy" or charity.

It is just a line I don't like seeing crossed

That said Malans items were wonderful.

Why do posters insist upon coming to this site to get "offended"?

Why go looking for aggravation?

Just a question.

The Stella jacket in the 11th and 12th photos from her collection? WANT.

I love ALL the looks, I would also kill for anything in one of Emmet's prints.

Malan's is beautiful - but I ain't classy enough to want to wear his stuff.

Fabulous! I love Emmett's halter neck flower power wiggle dress. How I wish I could have been there.

Fabulous, guys! The men look HOT!

Well, it's an interesting question ... I do not, at all, mind people using or modifying flags for any creative purpose. But I get why some people feel that its disrespectful.

My question is - I see how cutting up a flag, which represents someting, could be seen as desecration, but how is CREATING something out of other materials - that is meant to capture the essence of the flag - a descration?

And does wearing a white T shirt with a flag printed on the front of it count as disrespectful?

I think that Stella is capturing a spirit of Americana that is joyful and exuberant - and I'm having a hard time understanding why it's seen as disrespectful.

I'm trying to pose a legitimate question - not trying to start a fight. Any thoughts?

Well certainly it was a nice mix of deisgners. I think it was a good choice to use the 3 of them. As you say they are very different and at a show you don't want to see all the same stuff.

Hmm...hot models in edgy leather and studs in front of a gay audience on Fire Island. YOu really think Stella made a good impression?...lol

Those models especially the men did look smokin fierce

LMFAO!!

LOVED all 3 designers. now that is a fashion show! how exciting for all of you.

Very, very cool, and very, very impressive. Way to go, guys! Thanks for sharing the whole experience with us.

I usually dislike flags in clothing, not because they offend me politically, but because I find them tacky. Just my $0.02.

I'm with Mary on this take. But the American flag on biker bar/stud/chick fashion is practically a staple of the look.

Stella has always featured it in her line in some way or another, and if anything, she highlights it, rather than desecrates it.

It's just art. Lighten up.

I love these collections. Malan, Emmett and Stella just keep getting better.

I don't think Stella's use of the Stars & Stripes was offensive or dispespectful in anyway. As long as you're not cutting up an actual flag, it's fine with me.

I never wear white, but I want Malan's first pantsuit in the worst way.

I have an Emmett dress from his fall/winter collection similar to the blue one with the brown belt. I take it out and put it on frequently just because it looks and feels so good.

Wish I could have been there and am very glad these designers are so successful.

Awesome! Love everything, especially Emmett's first 2 dresses. I want a pool boy : )

Malan's collection - every piece is gorgeous! Really, really, wonderful.

Drooling. The men are HOT. Oh, yes, the dresses, very pretty. Stella rocks!

So fun to see those serious models after the big smiles posted yesterday.

I know it's obvious, how 'clothes' make a person, but seeing the same models wear 3 totally diffrent perspectives of how to cover up your nakked bits.
Malan and his classy, and pretty. Emmett fun and pretty and Stella hard rocker and still pretty.

What great post. Thank you
Can't wait for part three when they are behind the scene.

It's great to really see one of Stella's collections. Looking at it, I can understand why her aesthetic didn't translate to PR all that well, but damn! Those clothes are fierce! They're not clothes you'd wear to the office or the country club (Malan and Emmett covered those markets nicely) but someone needs to dress the rockers of the world.

I'm in love with the look with the black leather pencil skirt and the vest with the pyramid-studded collar. It's sexy, it's hard core, but it's classy hardcore sexy.

Mariana (The Unoriginal)

"...had to run up a flight of stairs and a ramp just to get from the dressing room to the "runway," with Hal Rubenstein of InStyle Magazine yelling "Send them out faster!" at us."

Hal Rubenstein watching your show! Wow, Tlo, you rock!!!

Stella's model in the flag pants and open vest (second pair of flag pants) looks like he could be Emmett's brother. In yesterday's pictures I thought it was Emmett for a sec.

Great fun, TLo. Thanks for posting.

EXACTLY! It would've been so much more interesting if they had shown different aesthetics at Bryant Park. I don't particularly like Stella's style, but I can't deny how hot the models look in her looks.

C'est moi, c'est moi Lola

Stella's jackets are VERY kickass, and I'd like one for fall....

Lady and the Poolboy - genius theme. Thanks for the eye-candy, Emmett!

Malan - worldly sophistication, squared, as always...

I'm not just saying this as a Loyal Minion -- that really was a perfectly directed show. The lineup was perfectly chosen: Malan set the tone with high-end professionalism, Emmett added zing with his wit, and Stella brought the wow to wrap it all up. It seriously rivals the final runways for both US and Canada PR Seasons 1 for creative inspiration. Bravo!

What about the swim trunks with suspenders? Such a simple little thing, yet somehow very attention-grabbing. Maybe because the suspenders look like they're emerging from deep within.

I think Malan is the blandest designer in the world. I have never understood the appeal. His designs aren't even interesting from a "classic glamour" perspective.

I like the prints Emmett used. Tropical and modern. I can't really see any guys wearing blousy orange pants though, unless they are both gay and on Fire Island.

Stella's rocked, plain and simple. I love her stuff. I have visited her store here in NYC before, not because I could really wear anything but because I think her stuff is so interesting. She was very, very nice. Love Stella! (And she used more shirtless male models than anybody. Gotta love that!)

Guys, congrats on your great choice of designers for the show. Three great mini-collections from 3 distinct points of view. I hope you raised tons of moolah!

I'm very glad to hear Stellaaah was a crowd favorite. Malan and Emmett presented certainly beautiful things but clearly a more traditional Hamptons-y feel. I guess Stellaaah's is more for the after-party, eh?

CanIGetYouAnything?

I love Stella's leather bag. Where can I find it?

Fucking awesome, guys!

Ditto. Want. I also want to pull on those poolboy suspenders. The shows rocked and complemented each other. Amazing work TLo! Vegan said it first, but PR has to have you as judges. Grassroots movements cannot be denied.

LOVED Malan's collection, and Stella's, though I'm a little surprised that Stella's was such a hit. I wouldn't have thought a bunch of rich queens would be so into punk and rock & roll.

As much as I liked Stella's, the bare feet seemed so out of place.

I would expect huge biker/skinhead/S&M boots to complete the looks.

Every time I see Malan's work, I am reminded of how disappointed I was that he left PR so early in the season. His clothes are absolutely gorgeous!

I'm absolutely in LOVE with Malan's first look and his first dress. Me want!!!!

Love the others too of course, but those looks are the two I really want to buy.

I would wear anything Malan made. Gorgeous!

And it looks like the show was a lot of fun. I'm envious.

I absolutely, positively ADORE Malan's collection. I would wear every look.
Emmett's collection WAS fun, especially the eyecandy.
I guess I'm just not into Stella as a designer, but I love her personality and wit.
It was a great show, boys, something for everyone!!! Loved it!!!

I disagree with the poster who wanted boots for Stella's looks. I think the bare feet gave her collection a very wholesome and Americana/hippy feel. I absolutely loved it.

I think what makes this so easy to respond positively to is that it is joyous. Some of these same designs, taken with Ultra-Serious Artiness wouldn't be nearly as likable. But all three designers have a sparkle that suggests they're having fun. Stella-fun=Jeffery. and no one wants that.

FABOO! You guys did a great, great job; it really is time Project Runway (OR SOMEONE) hires you on as highly paid consultants.

Emmett's first dress, that awesome print with the twisted halter neck - it actually HURTS me that I am neither thin nor rich enough to have that dress. It's GORGEOUS.

And the spiked helmet dude....yeah, Stella knew her audience. Dang that boy looks good!

I want every dress from Emmett's collection, especially first two.

All models looked gorgeous, but Diana stood out as something special. I think she can rock a potato sack.

Loved Malan's and Emmett's collections. I want lots of things out of both. I thought Stella had some nice looks as well but I can't find anything genuinely attractive when it's made out of skin.

fabulous, all around.

i couldn't help but hear joan cusack in working girl saying, "six thousand dollars?! it's not even leathuh" while looking at stella's collection :)

Agree w/other poster who thought the bare feet w/Stella's looks were cute. Rockers can go to the beach, too! (And if you look at the candids of Stella in post #1, she's wearing her usual leather with flip flops!)

No time so my quick take S-T-E-L-L-A !!! OMG that first jacket and vest!!! F A B U L O U S!~!!!!

LOVED Malan's collection. Finally, it looks less fragile-y one-off and more like it will actually hold up for multiple wearings. FABU lines, fabrics. Never thought I'd say this for anything he ever did, but:

Twelve thumbs up!

As for Emmett's collection, some cute dresses but otherwise boring.

Stella - Geez. Not my taste, but granted that for those who do like it, it truly rocks.

Just Plain Christine

GMTA, Christina -

While looking at Stella's collection, I turned to my daughter and said, "Six thousand dollars? It's not even leathah!" (Then, of course, I had to explain the Working Girl reference.)

Malan has really developed as a designer. I love his collection. Emmett's not reinventing the wheel here, but it is very pretty. Stella isn't my esthetic at all, but she is a fantastic designer with a strong point of view.

What a pleasure to look at these collections after the horror of TFS!

It occurs to me that Project Runway, great as it is, is not the venue for designers who have a strong design esthetic like Stella. On the show, the designers have to be chameleons to an extent, and the emphasis on construction skills has an effect as well. Hmmm. I guess what I'm saying is that someone like Stella is never gonna win PR, nor is someone like that pageant dress kid (can't think of his name). It favors more mainstream "fashion" design.

Oh, Dayna, if you're reading this: You are divine! Those legs! I'd love to see you walking at Bryant Park, girl.

In my Walter Mitty fantasies I'm the kind of woman who looks like she should be wearing Malan's clothes: Casually sauntering into the party as Bobby Short sings 'Charlie'.

Simply stunning. Always.

--GothamTomato

Love the collections, especially Malan's.

Ellen - The "pageant dress" guy was Kayne, from S3. He's gone on to design prom dresses, I think.

LOVELOVELOVE STELLA.

GothamTomato: In my Walter Mitty fantasies I'm the kind of woman who looks like she should be wearing Malan's clothes: Casually sauntering into the party as Bobby Short sings 'Charlie'.

GMTA, indeed. I crave a Malan Breton blouse, size 18.

And Stella's designs are the freakin' s##t!

I absolutely LOVE everyone of Malan's pieces. Just gorgeous!

Emmett's is fun & flirty...and yes, I want a pool boy, too!

I'm not a leather wearin' kinda gal (makes this old menopausal body 'perspire' too much) but she has a great vibe to all of her stuff.

All gorgeous and Dayna is an amazing model

For some strange reason this cracked me up.

Are you in danger? Are the Feds after you? la policia? Are you roughing it, i.e., using a dial up connection? Are you wearing an all-in-one sleeping bag, jewelry, umbrella, hair spray and cosmetics, shoe bag coat?

This is so nice. I love the collections! Thanks, guys!!

I'm always mesmerized by the lovely textures of Malan's designs. I would love to own a piece.

Stella is awesome! I love her pants. They are HOT. My butt would look amazing in them : )

LaFemmeFataledeNY

Wow, Dayna is really tall. Now I'm going to be watching the show looking for those girls.

Nice seeing these guys doing great work.

Malan has a website where you can buy his things. I had him make dresses for my niece and they were DROP DEAD GORGEOUS! If you want to reach him his website is www.malanbreton.com

I would love the idea of Stella doing resort wear, that white corset was rather refined. If only Emmett would make those floral bathing suit shorts for women...

Fab show guys- congrats!

Just ogled the designs again and registered the WHITE gladiator sleeve on the white skirt/bustier suit from Stella ... O.M.F.G.

I would SO wear that to a Board meeting or the Grammys or SOMETHING ... Stella, you are my hero!

So do TLo have some custom-made leathuh jackets yet? :D

I wonder if Stella had them all be barefoot out of consideration that lacing in and out of the, who knows, Doc Martens in order to shimmy in and out of multiple pairs of tight leathuh pants would put undue stress on the models, especially after one of them had already taken a spill? Since TLo were at the fittings, they'd know if it were a last-minute change, right?

I am sorry to point out the the sheer jackets (Malan's) don't look as good as Daniella's on TFS. (After zooming on the pics, I was disappointed.

Ann

Malan is truly showing some growth as a designer. At first, I think I was more intrigued by his personality than his designs, but now... I just love all those pieces. Practice makes perfect. Well done!

" Six thousand dollars ! Its not even leathah. " Thanks for the Working Girl ref. Christine and Just Plain Christine. A great laugh to start my day.

My goodness, you boys must have had a a blast !

I loved the first half of Malan's collection and would LOVE to wear the I Dream of Jeannie outfit from Emmett's.
And Stella just rocks it.

I agree with another poster who saw a lot of joy in the whole show. Thanks for sharing TLo.

I agree, I love this collection. Good job, Malan!

Thank you! What a wonderful show. Malan's line looks so...floaty, and soft yet professional. I'd wear anything of his, plus Emmett's first dress and Stella's white skirt-"suit". Hell, who am I kidding? If any of these lovely people offered to dress me, I'd wear whatever they wanted!

Malan's collection was lovely - really great.

Emmett's prints were terrific.

And Stella's clothes looked like a production of Hair as performed by the crowd at The Eagle or The Spike. Loved them!

Malan's collection looks amazing and to me it just screamed "I need to be in Michelle Obama's closet." Seriously, Mrs. O needs to take a look at Malan's clothing. It would be a great change from her belted cardigans!

No danger, except
perhaps being infected by the familia maddness.

Fantastic all the way around! And entirely too perfect for the crowd (and us)!

Why is everyone so crazy about Stella?? Her pieces all look the same. Even if you like that kinda style... yawn, boring.
