First Lady Michelle Obama speaks before an evening of music, poetry and the spoken word in the East Room of the White House in Washington wearing Basso & Brooke.

Can you believe that's the First Lady? Much like her nicknamesake, Jackie, she's redefining how a First lady looks.

Basso & Brooke Spring 2009 Collection
Model: Vlada Roslyakov

Knocking it out of the damn park, girl! The hair, makeup and jewelry are all to-die, and it was a wise choice to have the dress altered and worn as a top. She's really coming into her own lately.

She looks absolutely fabulous. The best yet!

Gave me goosebumps! She looks utterly wonderful, and she wears it so comfortably.

What a delight!

All the best,

NDC

SASSY!!!!

FAB!

Especially love the hair and makeup. No wonder #44 still has the hots for her!

Mariana (The Unoriginal)

Her hair looks amazing. Love it! Thank you much for all these fabulous updates, Tlo!!!!

She looks absolutely incredible! Stylish, ever so slightly edgy for a first lady, and what a flattering style neckline for her! Bravo!

She's fabulous. Are those capri's? Wonder what shoes she was wearing.

I can't believe she is my First Lady. What a treasure. I love her.

OMG, she looks so damn SEXY!!!

Lovin the makeup, showing of skin, attitude, white pants. Gorgeous! I think it's truly her skin that makes this work!

God she looks fabulous. Though I am dubious about the length of those pants - and I don't trust her yet to have picked a shoe that looks well with them.

Perhaps best I can't see them, and I will NOT go looking for a photo. I want to hold on to the dream.

Love the print, love the neckline and sleeves, love the hair, make-up, and jewelry.

I have a shortie's bias against capris, but that's something I'm working on... :P

Absolutely lovely, elegant while also fresh and modern.

Love the whole look, EXCEPT for the cropped pants. Would prefer a skirt or long pants.

First off, TLo? You spoil us, darlings! Eleven posts in three days? Swoon!

Speaking of swoon, I think I'm in love with the First Lady. She is absolutely radiant.

I think she looks nice and I appreciate her look. But I wish she had kept the original look of the dress; it's amazing.

Hate the pants. Boo capris

That first image at the top of the post is beautiful.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you the First Lady of the United States of FIERCE!

I had to read the headline 10x before I got that it was Shelly Oetry as in Shelly-O + Poetry....

I'm a little slow on the uptake today, but proud to be an American.

When I saw the top half of this look I gasped with joy. And then I scrolled down... and it became a moan of disappointment.

I LOVE the look from her waist up, she's stunning. She wears it better than the model. But from the waist down... those pants... they just make her bottom half look chunky, and there is NO reason why they should do that.

I think the original dress would look amazing on her. Or if she wore a long skirt, or a longer pair of pants, something a bit more slimming. Because she has GORGEOUS long legs. Those pants just aren't doing them any justice.

No, I can't believe that's our first lady. Its SUCH a breath of fresh air. She's getting better and better. And I love that you keep posting about her. Big kisses !!!

Myra Flection

Love the top - the pants looked like they are cropped. I'm no lover of cropped pants.

Adore the earrings and the hair, though!

oh my GOD. YEAAH! Forget flags; THIS makes me feel patriotic! This is OUR lady, world! So proud!

I share a birthday (different year) with this woman, so maybe I have some faith in her because of it. She was telegraphing from the git that she was young and had a personal, quirky, "unique" point of view and did not know how to manifest it too well. I know her public (all of us) have pulled her to her present step and hopefully she will continue on up. She can do it and with this one she does. She looks like she SHOULD look, this look is very attractive, not a reaction I usually ever have about her. She usually makes it to awkward/serviceable/all over the place. No one has to be perfect or please all the people all the time, but she is really connecting the dots now and I am glad for her. Hair, makeup and body shine working it as much as the clothes! I hope she keeps it up, we'll love along her.

Meant to say "along with her."

My love for MObama deepens!

She looks fabulous! I loved her hair and make-up and I covet those earrings!

I bet she reads this Blog =) Who needs other Gays when you have TLo?? =p

This is definitely a home run all the way. I even like the cropped pants - very Spring. And I disagree with the posters who hate capris - they look really good on tall women.

The dress remade as a top is brilliant, and the earrings are the perfect compliment. Gosh dam, her gays are doing well by her!

A-M-A-Z-I-N-G !!!!!

To all the posters who hate capris - you are probably shorties and dislike them because women of shorter stature don't look good in them.

We tall women adore them and get loads of compliments on them. And, if hemmed just right, they make a tall girl's ankles look really sexy.

Give Shelley O a break. You can't even see her shoes in that picture, so how can you tell that the capri pants aren't flattering at the bottom?

I love her so much I'm a little verklempt.

I think it is entirely inappropriate for a first lady to be showing a shoulder during the day. State Dinner, fine. For this..NO. She could have centered it a bit more and shown a little less skin. I love the print on her, but don't approve of how she wore it.

Ooh. Ouch. This is what the GoFugYourself girls call a "scrolldown." Looks great...until you scroll down. Love the earrings and ADORE the patterned dress - but those pants are fug, matronly, and wayyyyy too nautical. I would venture to guess this outfit probably looked noticeably worse the moment she stepped out from behind the podium.

I seem to always like Michelle is giving me "almost" - great ideas, but there's usually something kinda off about it.

PS After reading the other comments, I just want to say I don't hate the pants because they are cropped. I think they are out of proportion and make her look like she's wearing "fat pants," which she most certainly isn't and does not need to. And whatever I saw about her style, lord knows she is leaps and bounds beyond every first lady before her, with the exception of her 'namesake' Jackie O, of course.

Look, her bangs line up with the neckline! :DDD

OK, I didn't see much value in turning it into a shirt, but I can't see the hemline, so who knows. Also, I dunno about the off-shoulder thing; the original dress isn't worn that way, either. White pants, even cropped or capri-length (I thought capris were shorter?) seems like they'd be fine, but I don't like the cut. They seems to go straight down from the hips, so her lower half looks really wide. Maybe if they were tapered.

My concern here is that we're going to start getting a non-stop wave of glam. I like it when she throws in the occasional low-price, everywoman pieces that are still flattering and make her look so approachable.

I'd hate to see all this uproar about her outfits go to her head. Besides, we don't need our First Lady to be a non-stop, Jackie O glamazon. We need her to keep it real.

I'm tall, but still don't like capris or cropped pants. Thay look OK on her, and I love the blouse (shoulder and all). Just so proud that she's our First Lady.

I admitted as much in my post, dearie. And we really, really don't look good in them.

I love it. LOVE the Asian print. Would have liked to see her try the whole thing as the original but the pants work.

Another Anonymous

I like the neckline.

It's not something you can repeat very often, but it sure does draw attention right up to the face.

Very flattering!

Hey, Anonymous, we need the REST of that url.

Never mind, here it is.

The wide pant leg was smart. Making it narrower at the bottom would have made her look hippy.

Daggone it.

Here it is again:

It looks to me like she just pulled the blouse to one side to get that off-the-shoulder look. Pretty clever idea - turns a regular silhouette into a real wow outfit.

Now THAT was fabulous...

Shelley always adds a little quirk or her own imprint on her outfits, which I love. She doesn't just grab it off the rack and put it on exactly the way it appeared on the runway or in the catalog or ad. And she's always got that cool, edgy jewelry. I love her.

I agree though that I'd like to see her wearing some affordable clothes, too. She can rock the J. Crew and Gap with her special look. Of course, this was a special event.

Everybody always raves about Jackie, and she was great and glamorous, but very much of her time in her cute, girly looks and shy, demure ways (as First Lady). Michelle is a 21st century soman: whip-smart, confident, successful, athletic, and active. To me, she is more relatable for modern women (and girls).

don't like the pants but am absolutely floored (in a good way) by the top. To quote Gorgeous, "I am no lover of cropped pants." But the top is great. Wow.

LOVE LOVE LOVE!

that's all I have to say!

Yeah, but omg, those fugly pants. I can't believe you didn't even comment on them, they ruin an otherwise lovely look. Her hair looks so much better. Thank you to whomever is responsible for that. It was kind of embarrassing before.

She looks FAB!!!!

did someone really say they don't "approve" of her "showing shoulder" during the daytime? ha.

i think she looks downright divine in that neckline, any old time!

In these pictures, yes, the pants look awful. But if you look at the full length picture someone posted, she looks fantastic in them. She looks balanced, fresh and beautiful. Love!

Should I be _allowed_ to see that sexy, bare shoulder? I'm not sure! But I'm not complaining!

I'm 5'8", sweetheart. I still say those pants don't work.

No matter how tall or short or thin or fat the person who's wearing them is, they're just not flattering at all. They have the unfortunate effect of cutting off her legs. And the shape does make her look wider than she is.

Gia, I beg to differ. Take a good look at the full view of the outfit provided by another poster:

http://nymag.com/daily/fashion/2009/04/michelle_
obama_slideshow.html#photo=1

The capri pants do NOT cut off her legs nor do they make her look wider than she is. She looks like a million bucks in them -- as did Audry Hepburn and Jackie O, both of whom also wore them smashingly. In fact, Michelle has made her own fashion statement by wearing capris with a slight bell flare at the bottom.

And as for your sweeping statement about "I don't care" what height or weight the woman is, they're "not flattering at all"? Clearly many women disagree with you and buy them, making these a fashion option that has endured since Audry Hepburn wore them over 50 years ago in her movies Sabrina and Funny Face. Moreover, they're a perfect option for women who don't want to expose too much (shorts ride up when you sit down) but do want something less stifling than slacks on a warm day.

Dahling, she looks FABULOUS!

One thing I love about Ms. O is that she is utterly beautiful and stylish without one minute of looking like a television actress and Weather Channel anchorwoman (i.e. Sarah Palin). She looks like a real woman. Gorgeous, gorgeous, GORGEOUS!

Ciao!

She looks stunning, as usual.

Hate the pant length though. But I can overlook that as I am SO PROUD to have her representing us.

Nice look for a poetry slam. I can hardly tell a thing about the pants, but the blouse and earrings are fantastic.
I must add that as a rule, I do not like white pants. But if she does (and it appears so), why not?

DuBois-I do not think the pants are true capris. I think the pants are just cropped or what is called in Florida slang "Flood Pants". The only purpose of flood pants if there is no flood is to show off a great shoe, ankle bracelet or tatoo. The trick with flood pants is you have to be tall and/or have very long legs. Luckily shelly O has both.

The wide-cropped pant is wrong, but the rest is perfection!

The wide cropped pant may have been wrong for the ocasion but I do not think there is anything wrong with the overall look.

I love her, every shoulder baring, capri/cropped pant wearing second of her.

She is fabu.

I believe this was an evening event (not daytime).

Actually, she had great shoes on, too {see the full-on picture in the link, where she's walking hand in hand with Barack). I agree, these pants were perfect for the occasion, and she looked fab in them.

MouseAnony-Viewed the shoes on the link you suggested. You can never go wromg with a classic low heel pump. Not the footear I would slect with cropped pants but I am 5'7" not 6"+.

Shelly O looks great!

TampaBay

BTW, I'm just noticing how some of us grab our morning coffee and make a beeline to TLo for our morning fix.

;=D

MouseAnony - No Shit! Being unemployed helps though!

TampaBay

lol she looks great! but the pants? me no likey ... at all.

Re: the showing of the skin - with an evening gown you expect some built-in foundation help - with this top I could only think - is she not wearing a bra?

Above the waist it's all fabulous. And I want those earrings. But the pants are horrible. Not flattering at all and too casual for an evening event at the White House. And too plain and matronly for the rest of the look. I wish she had kept the top a dress and worn that.

Love the hair and make-up! Stunning.

I don't love the length of the pants. I also don't love the top but I think she wears it really well! I believe the pants should have been "full-length."

She is such a winner tho! I love being interested in what the first lady is wearing!! Yay!!

I love the print. Count me in as wishing she had worn the dress. However, if she's paying for her own clothes, I can only imagine that she was able to afford the blouse, but not the whole dress.

I have no problem with cropped pants, particularly when they are tailored.

The problem with the way the pants look in the still photo is that they look a bit awkward while they are still. In other pix I've seen where she is walking or moving they look like they are flowing and work perfectly with the top.

Also, I think the look (with bare the shoulder) is perfectly appropriate for the event. It is a poetry jam, an evening of spoken word and art. The event was edgy and a bit avant garde and so was the look. And people, we really need to stop overtly sexualizing body parts that are perfectly acceptable to be shown in public bare.

Wow. She looks absolutely stunning.

Wow. Just Wow.

When I first saw the pic of the divine Shelly O, I was breathless.
I absolutely LOVE the blouse, the earrings, her makeup and hair. She LOOKS breathtaking!
Also, not a big fan of the pants, but somehow they work on her.
Bravo (no pun intended!) to Shelly O. She is not only becoming a true fashion icon, but an inspiration as a wife, mom, daughter, sister and First Lady!

Wow, she looks amazing! I LOVE Basso and Brooke, glad to see she's wearing one of their pieces.

she looks amazing....
I love the prints of the top, gorgeous!
just beautiful! I'm glad you guys keeping posting about her.... what a First Lady!

The thing that was so great about this outfit, as well as the hair and makeup, is that it has a very fresh, spring-like, youthful flair to it. It all pulls toghether beautifully.

Shelley's not an old lady, but she looks ten years younger here.

Big difference from the queen mother embroidered ensembles from Isabel Toledo, I have to say.

And what the HEYELL with the Bart Simpson do on the human hanger?

bitchybitchybitchy

Fabulous first lady!

She's amazing, but those pants are too wide to be cropped that short. It makes her look stumpy, and she's an Amazon.

I need to find a picture that shows the slacks/pants/capris better. She's perfection from the waist up, but I fear those pants are not only ugly, but unflattering.

--Sara in North Bend

I love it!

The pants are shown off best when she's moving & there's a great shot of Michelle and the Mister walking down the hall toward the room. I think some of you would change your mind!

The event was streamed live on whitehouse.gov site and HBO filmed it for broadcast. I think it's also going to be up on the web soon, but don't know if that's official site and/or YouTube. (Isn't Esperanza Spalding a darling?)

I don't understand the few saying this isn't "appropriate for the occasion". Wha? ... A casual evening arts event. Grow up!

She looks amazing. I'm so proud of our first lady.

WORD!!!!

i am so jealous of her ability to wear capris. i'm 5'8" and still feel stumpy legged when i try to pull them off. but she looks ABSOLUTELY gorgeous.

Serious question: Is there a difference between "clam diggers" and "capri"?

Yes, there is a difference, as it turns out.

Clam diggers defined by Wikipedia as follows:

"Three quarter pants, pedal pushers, shants, shpants, clam diggers, flood pants, jams, or highwaters are commonly used expressions to mean pants that are longer than shorts but are not as long as pants. They typically come down to between knee and ankle length."

Capri pants, according to Wikipedia, are different because they are snug-fitting. And, it illustrates this definition with pictures of pants that are snug fitting from the top all the way to the below-the-knee end.

So TampaBay is correct. These are not capris, these ARE flood pants.

I'm 75% in love with it. I think full-length pants would work better on her 'cuz she's so tall (statuesque!) - the cropped pants look like floods on her. Other than that, OMG she is so fabulous!

This was fun, casual, and chic something we haven't seen from a firstlady in like forever!

Oh if you think the critics are having a hissy fit about her fabulous arms being exposed they have fallen on the ground and had a seizue at Michelle giving them shoulder! ahahahah

I think she looks gorgeous, but I wish she had worn the outfit as a dress rather than a top and capris.

The styling is lovely and spot on.

Good going Shelley!

oh my gosh!! wonderful.

Hate the pants. Boo capris

I'm with you Penn...I absolutely hate capris. They make tall women look short & dumpy & short & dumpy women look even dumpier.

The only people who look good in capris are models who could use the couple of extra pounds the capris add.

SisterZip

Sis,

Did you think Michelle looked short and dumpy in the pic where she's holding hands with Barack? (See the link in the above comments.)

I don't theeeeeenk so!

Fabulous! I love the earrings : )

Wow, she really looks pretty, although like others, I think it would have been really gorgeous to leave it as a dress - I do not like the pants. What would Tim Gunn say? - he hates capris!!!

Her hair and make up are fabulous!

But the pants . . .
