In or Out: Michelle Monaghan

Michelle Monaghan attends the 2009 Free Arts NYC Benefit auction at 205 West 39th Street in New York City in Calvin Klein.

Hmmm. This one's a toughie.

Calvin Klein Fall 2009 Collection
Model: Diana Farkhullina

On the one hand, it's definitely an eye-catching dress. On the other hand, that fabric looks a little like a sofa one would find at the Salvation Army. We think we're going to go with a provisional IN on this one. Like we said, any woman walking into a room wearing that dress is going to turn heads and we applaud her for taking a little risk. We wish the fit was a little better on her. It seems a little looser around her waist than it did on the model. We also think those shoes aren't helping. We're so torn! It seems like we're criticizing more than complimenting but we really do think it's such an interesting look that she deserves credit for wearing it and (mostly) pulling it off.

Have no idea who she is.

The dress is okay, and the "sofa" fabric looks like something Chloe would use.

Overall, enhh....

The dress is fine -- it looks better fitted in the first shot. My problem is that the styling somehow doesn't work. Makeup is just a bit too bland. I know gold is tough to work with but stil....

I also do not know who she is, but she sure resembles a healthier well fed version of Lara Flynn Boyle!

No, no, no... she really does look like an ugly sofa... and the dress's cut only serves to accentuate her knobby knees.

(Side note... she was in 'Gone Baby Gone' and 'Made of Honor', but I always confuse her with Ashley/Kimberly Stewart)

I don't know who that woman is, but someone should report her for stealing that dress from the Jungle Room at Graceland.

It's hideous.

Bold color choice. I like it and I think it looks good on her. Perhaps the gold shoes would have worked better, but black is okay.
What is the fabric anyway? It doesn't look at all stiff to me. More like some kind of burn-out silk velvet.. gorgeous.

well, that is might gold.

normally, i am anti- "matchy, matchy" but this is such a unique look, I have to say that I like the model's gold shoes better.

if there were sound effects, it would be "AHHHHH" as the actress walks into the room "Wow... gold! (span down to shoes) black shoes? KLUNK!"

The shoes ruin the dress. The shoes are too casual. I have the shoes in white with a higher heel. I bought them at bebe two years ago. Cannot believe Calvin Klein is knocking off bebe! LOL! CRINGE! LOL!

Eva Mendes wore the same dress but in purple a few weeks ago. Michelle looks WAY better in it.

Compared to the way Eva Mendez was worn by her version, this one is much better and much more flattering.

She gets an "in" but only because it does a little something for her rather than to her.

If she had worn brown shoes instead of black, she would have knocked this one out of the park imo. As it is, I rather love the dress and I think the fit is great. She looks beautiful, and that's what matters

Kevin Bacon there in all of his wrinkled glory, and no word from TLo?

I'm SHOCKED! LOL!

BTW, can anyone do the six degrees on this gold chick?

My grandmother had that sofa. FUG! And the shoes are horrible.

It must just be a loose dress. Go Fug Yourself showed the same dress on Eva Mendes and it was loose on her also.

Count me in as another one who has no idea who Michelle Monaghan is.

Out--that fabric and that hemline are so draping 101. I think I might like the shoes, though. With another dress.

I absolutely hate it. The color, the hem, the fabric, everything. It is probably in large part due to the fact that I hate velvety fabrics of all kinds, and unfortunately had to wear a bumblebee-esque jumpsuit made out of eerily-similar crushed velvet material for a Color Guard performance one time. I hated that ridiculous outfit (although it looked better on me than most of the others in my guard, hehe) and this brings back vivid memories.

Bailey,
You should use a picture of that outfit as your avitar.

Haha Sewing Siren, if only I still had it. They wouldn't let us keep them because the fabric was like, $20 a yard and they had to resell them. They were literally tank-top bodysuits though, with like, a black strip around the waist and on one of the straps or something. It was one of like, 3 costume changes. We were supposed to be conquistadors. Yeah, I don't get it either haha.

I agree, it could use a few edits, but I think it's a great, bold look. I think the color works with her hair really well, actually.

And for those who don't know who she is, check out Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. She's not really the shining star in it, but it's definitely worth watching for Val Kilmer and Robert Downey Jr. bantering with fantastic one-liners for 2 hours.

Provisional IN, as well. I alternated between "fugly" and "yeah, but it's really interesting and makes a totally unique statement," and the latter finally won out. Mostly because this outfit really flatters her face.

Yes, it looks like somebody's velour flocked sofa or wallpaper, but the look is oddly interesting in a good way. Plus, nobody but nobody will miss her entrance into a room.

Shoes - the gold would have taken away from the dress and been too matchy-matchy. Also, the klunky style grew on me as I was trying to make up my mind about the outfit. But, the shoes in brown would have been better.

I am also of the legion who have no idea who this woman is, but even though I dislike the shoes she's getting a big ol' IN from me.

It's an eye-catching dress, she's not over-accessorized, her hair and makeup look great with it. Good for you, honey!

Now, who is she?

I really like the shoes (maybe not so much with the dress). I just can't like that colour...

I give the colour an IN...I think that if a person can pull of that colour, they should wear it all the time.

But the cut and the shoes are big outs. BIG OUTS for me.

Yup, looked WAY worse on Eva Mendes.

Okay, six degrees (probably could have done a shorter route, but):

1. michelle monaghan...
2. was in made of honor with patrick dempsey...
3. who is on grey's anatomy with katherine heigl...
4. who was in knocked up with paul rudd...
5. who was on friends (and in object of my affection) with jennifer aniston...
6. who was in picture perfect with kevin bacon.

Out. On the runway model it flows, and has some grace. On this gal,it's just not working.

Oh, but I love those shoes, though I'm not sure I love them with the dress.

How do you solve a problem like a b-lister showing up in vile chartreuse curtains? Not even Fraulein Maria would attempt this.

Pity, because she's a cute girl in darling shoes otherwise.

I still don't know who she is, nor do I care. I might care if she looked in the least bit attractive or put together, which she does not in these pics.
PS: I hated my Grandmother's sofa, which most likely did end up in the Salvation Army store, because no one wanted any part of it.

Yeah, I agree with TLo 100%. It's not a disaster, but it's true the fabric is kind of ugly. The shoes are definitely out. They don't go with the dress and they're just plain fugly.

Who picks out the clothes for these women? How can I, a high school teacher, know that those shoes look dreadful with that dress, which is lively at least, and this woman's stylist doesn't know that?

TLo,, maybe you can make extra $$ being the stylists for many of these actresses who either don't know how to dress themselves, or have dreadful stylists dressing them!!!

And just an aside - why do women with such ugly toes or blotchy skin on their legs refuse to wear hose?? I am only 47, we always dressed up with stockings, when did this dreadful trend start???

I didn't really like this dress when Eva Mendes wore the grey (?) version a week or so ago and I still don't like it. The cut is just not flattering or all that interesting. I do like it better in this color but better is only relative to Eva's version.

Hose/stockings are NOT to be worn with open toed shoes...according the 'Powers that Be"

Well, the "Powers that Be" must not have a budget for clothing. Wearing expensive heels with no hosiery is just going to make them smell of foot sweat and ruin them. I don't see what's wrong with wearing nude toe and heel stockings with open toe and also sling-back heels.

Boopsie2008,

i think there are stockings (or there were) that have the toes cut out especially for open toed shoes. I have heard about them but have never seen them for sale anywhere.

If anyone knows a brand name for this type of stockings could you please post.

TampaBay

To Tampabay:

I vaguely recall that as a flash-in-the-pan offering in the '80's or so that didn't catch on. However, the nude toe nylons (without the usual reinforcing layer across the toes) can look quite nice because they are barely noticeable.

I LOVE it. Yeah, it looks sofa-ish....which is precisely what is so great about it. I love clothing that looks like upholstery. Would definitely wear this dress if I could remotely afford it.

Shoes are fug, though. She didn't need to go matchy matchy with them like the model, but they are a bit overwhelming.

RE no nylons or nude toe nylons, how about a show of hands on what looks best and is the most practical for open toe heels?

I think she managed to pull it off better then almost anyone else I can think of, but I'm SO over these women wearing shoes with their toes hanging over or clinging to the edge like their little piggy lives depended on it.

Ummmmmmm - - wow, this is tough, but I'm going to say IN. With that color dress your not really gonna be looking at her feet. And it could have been a helluva lot worse!!

The fit is bothering me more than the fabric. The waist appears to be riding lower on Ms. Monaghan than on the model, minimizing the effect of the silhouette and adding to the "sofa" feel.

Tampa Bay,
I think you can find the open-toe pantyhose at big department stores. I saw a bunch on my latest Spanx-hunt at Lord & Taylor. Probably a seasonal item, though.

Wow! Bailey was in Color Guard?

Could he be Jay in disguise?...

Oh! Judging. I like, but think this is one case where dark tights (say, very dark brown?) would help it along.

In-ish!

I just hate how the hem is cut. HATE.

In. She looks FAB! Hate the shoes.

The fabric is hideous but I kind of like the dress on her. She's so pretty.

"TampaBay said...

I agree, they are hideous.

IN. I love the whole look.

I'm with you guys, it's definitely an eye-catching dress.

1. Michelle Monaghan
2. who was in Eagle Eye with Shia LaBeof
3. who was in Charlie's Angels 2 with Demi Moore
4. Who was in A Few Good Men with Kevin Bacon...

I got it to 4! :p

Strange little dress, but it flattered her as much as it could anyone given the odd little swoop-out over the knees. I, myself, can't overcome my dislike of shiny gold clothing (exemptions made for full length gowns and accent pieces) to actually like it - and I think the black shoes look clunky, agree with those who say should have been brown.

Provisional in, provisional out - would go with In on the photo with Kevin Bacon, Out on the view to it's left, where the knee-baring swoop just looks awkward.

Oh, & on the hose/no hose thing - I don't know when it went out, but hosiery is dead as a doornail even among the young and poor (i.e. my kids & their friends.) Exceptions made for hosiery/tights which are part of a "look."

I myself would wear hose with leg-baring fashion most of the time because I have middle-aged legs that have not had thousands lavished on them to remove the unsightly ravages of time. But that's not fashion, that's courtesy to others.

nikki bikki bo bikki...you actually got in in 3. The first one should be "Michelle Monaghan was in Eagle Eye with Shia LeBeouf," not just Michelle Monaghan alone. Congrats! You did even better than you thought you did.

Out I think.. the color and texture are a bit fug to me.

T Lo says:
"We're so torn! It seems like we're criticizing more than complimenting but we really do think it's such an interesting look that she deserves credit for wearing it and (mostly) pulling it off."

By that logic, Bjork, in the swan thing, is the most in anyone could possibly be...

You guys missed Kiss Kiss Bang Bang with Val Kilmer and Robert Downey Jr.

I thought the dress was green. Not a flattering choice in green or gold for this Michelle.

But how about for Miz Shelly O?

Torn is a good word. This dress does not work on her, it is like a Celtic right of spring outfit gone wrong. She's too tiny to make it work. Very odd dress and a scream of a color. HAD TO HAVE LEG ACCENT, e.g. a pattened lacy leg stocking of some kind. Black shoes were a mistake. Something else, probably gold. I do not think she brought it off. Cute girl.

She's a good actress and quite pretty. I do get a Lara Flynn Boyle vibe and also a little Evangeline Lilly.

I think the problem with the fit on a lot of these dresses is that the women who wear them are shorter than the runway models. It seems like the waist is almost empire level on the model, where it sits more at Michelle's natural waist. That gives it a very different look.

I love the shoes but not with the dress. I'm not sure about the color on her; I'd like to see her in the purple or grey version.

I can barely see her knees but they don't look particularly knobby to me.

They really can't help it when they wear those super high heels - get the shoe any larger and the heel would gap terribly. Plus, if you have narrow feet it is hard to keep those toes inside anyway. But you SHOULD consider the appearance of your feet when selecting shoes. It is easy to keep the little piggies manicured and consider the toe configuration in shoe choice. Just not the best choice for her.

She did just have a baby a few months ago and may have been trying to mask her midsection a bit.

Haines makes the toeless stockings but the colors are terrible. I bought them (on line) last year to wear with an adorable Milly dress to a Christmas party with some open toed d'orsay pumps BUT the nude was really dark and they looked RIDICULOUS -- they really have to match your skin color or you look like you have Michael Jackson's skin disease on your toes. I threw them out.
