Drew Barrymore Underwater in ELLE

Burgeoning fashion icon (and our new diva) Drew Barrymore has a cover and editorial for the latest Elle magazine.

Gucci Fall 2009 Collection
Model: Yulia Kharlaponova

Love that top, but that's not such a hot picture of her, is it? The lighting looks way harsh and the makeup's not doing her many favors.

The subscribers' cover was much better.

Inside, Drew gets wet.

Blumarine Spring 2009 Collection
Model: Eniko Mihalik

Underwater shoots are a dime a dozen but it's kinda rare to see a celebrity doing one. Joe Zee styled this one and we think he made some great choices. The shot's kinda blah but the dress is gorgeous.

Giorgio Armani Spring 2009 Collection
Model: Michell Westgeest

Okay, those two shots are gorgeous and the dress is beautiful.

Jean Paul Gaultier Spring 2009 Collection
Model: Coco Rocha

Another great shot and great dress. Geez, this is boring. Give us something to criticize.

Dolce & Gabbana Spring 2009 Collection
Model: Isabeli Fontana

No criticisms here, either. We really have to reiterate what a great job Zee did. Some of these looks look better underwater.

Etro Spring 2009 Collection
Model: Yulia Kharlaponova

Drew is such a doll and she's made for these kinds of shoots. She clearly loves to have her picture taken and she seems to have a newfound love of wearing clothes. Nice job all around.

Love these! I can't help comparing them to that underwater "Make Me a Supermodel" shoot. Drew blows them all away with this, and we know from that epi how hard it can be to get a good underwater shot.

Too bad they didn't get Howard Schatz to shoot this. These shots are okay (and some of them are quite good), but nothing compared to the general quality of Howard's work. (Seriously. Go look up his books "Water Dance" and "Pool Light" if you want to see how it's really done.)

Some gorgeous clothes here, and Drew (mostly) does right by them.

But that cover shot looks like someone punched her in the eye.

Those kind of shots are right up Drew's alley.

Anything that allows her to be free with her body.

She looks absolutely gorgeous, so no complaints here, either.

I hate the cover, but the editorial is nice. I love that Jean Paul Gaultier dress.

You bitches are ROCKING! FAB posts!

I don't care for the cover shot. She looks tired.
However, the underwater shots are quite beautiful. And the gowns are to die for. I love every single one of them, and for me, that's saying a LOT!!
Thanks for yet another treat, TLo!!!

I'm an elle suscriber and the suscribers get different covers. The suscriber's cover of Drew is an underwater picture and it's SO beautiful!!! Tom & Lorenzo, can't you find it on the internet and post it???

I am developing more of a hetero girl-crush on Drew every day.

She's such a sweetie!

And has really been killing it lately clothes-wise.

That black number on Kate Hudson? Fuggetaboutit!

Put in on Drew...STUPENDOUS!

dreamy and relaxing. (TGIF). i also love the way the water changes the hues of the dresses a tiny bit. the light is used well.

i think one other reason the cover photo is so BLEH is her hair....it looks stringy and limp.

she looks like she's enjoying herself hugely. and why not?

i love that you love her. she has always been a fave of mine.

I don't hate the cover, except that it looks to me that her waist/ribcage has been narrowed - which annoys me because if they wanted a pre-pubescently skinny model, they should go hire one. They hired Drew Barrymore & what I most like about her is that she is not a cookie-cutter pretty actress/model.

She has the presence and knowledge of her own figure and features to allow her to appear both far more attractive and far less attractive than she actually is depending on how she makes up, the angles at which she is photographed, and how she uses her body.

I admire the technical skill it takes to end up with photos that actually show off the clothes. And I admire the fact that Ms. Barrymore manages to look as if it's all great fun.

I agree that the cover was photoshopped. Her face is not that narrow! See the last underwater pic - she actually has a rounded face, not one that is a deep "v" like a fox's snout. Every cover is so photoshopped now that the featured woman doesn't even look like herself!

The underwater pictures are stunning. They also evoke that dreamy quality that these dresses represent -- we dream of wearing them and looking so beautiful in them.

FAIL to the cover, SIX THUMBS UP to the underwater pictures.

This is so dreamy and beautiful! Drew can do no wrong lately, she's just awesome.

This past month totally makes up for Charlie's Angels 1 & 2!

This is so beautiful.

The subscribers cover is absolutely beautiful. They ought to do that kind of thing more often.

Am I the only one who wonders what becomes of the chlorine soaked gowns? Does Elle sell them to the employees at sample sales?

Drew as a water nymph is very apropos-- but what happens to these clothes after the pool? Will dry-cleaning save them?

Do we really need to exclaim "THE COVER IS PHOTOSHOPPED!!!" as if it's any surprise? Come on now.

I love Drew but I'm not as thrilled with these as others are. A couple of them are good but overall, kinda meh for underwater photography. Her body looks awkward, not graceful.

Rather nice job. I even like the newstand cover.

Listen people, Tom and Lorenzo have worked VERY hard to give us posts to replace this whole Project Runway fiasco. Today is payday for some, PUT SOME MONEY IN TLO's TIP JAR if you have it!

I LOVE the photos of the Armani and the Gaultier. The Dolce and Gabanna is actually meant for mermaids only. As for the rest, the dresses are dreamy, but the pictures are just okay.

I've always loved Drew and so prefer her looks to the standard hollywood fare - so glad she's getting the limelight right now and apparently having fun with it.

All the shots are lovely but it's the Armani one that is utterly and unbelievably gorgeous. I suddenly want to wear long floaty dresses down to the apartment's kiddy pool and float around like a mermaid.

Those photos are gorgeous! Drew looks great (except for the newsstand cover), the clothes look great. Yes, some of the dresses do look better underwater!

Photoshopping is not surprising, but I hope they didn't change her too much. One of the things I like about her is that she's not model-thin, and she looks thinner than usual in these photos. Then again, she has been looking thinner lately. She looked great all curvy in Wedding Singer and in Never Been Kissed, and she looks great now.

Sewing Siren, I've also wondered what happens to clothes that are ruined in pools, oceans, beaches, mud etc. after they are used in editorial photos!

Drew Barrymore was simply born to be photographed. She's just got the undefineable 'it' that you either have or you don't. And she does.

It doesn't really matter who shoots her - it could just as easily be the hobby geeks from the local camera club - she just makes the photographer's job that easy.

I'm so glad you guys love Drew as much as I do. She's probably the only celeb I would ever approach if I ever saw her somewhere. She just exudes fun and happiness.
Love these pics. She's gorgeous.

She clearly loves to have her picture taken.Well, and the camera loves her. She's got that inner glow thing going on.

memorexe,

There wouldn't be much point in dry cleaning , since they have already been submerged in pool water.
*I* would rinse them in vinegar water, then plain water, and hang them in the shade on a breezy day. Then go to work with my magic steam iron.

Vegan, I would love to get ahold of some of the dresses that they damage in the photo shoots and put my experimental restoration techniques to work on them.

Drew is such a doll. She's havin' fun these days, isn't she?

PS - I've got a virtual crush on Sewing Siren!

Let's not forget the jewelry.

Amazing! What a great set of pictures and the dresses are beautiful even underwater : )

I know, Desertwind - I mean, it's one thing to wonder how to fix to chlorine-damaged clothes. You don't expect somebody to actually have an answer.

I don't mind the newstand cover, she does look a little tired, but in the way that seems to say "i haven;t slept in days because i am working my *ss off and partying like a rock star, and still look this good." or at least that's my interpretation, but i am biased since i adore her despite anything.

What a beautiful spread! Thanks, Tlo!

LOVE. HER.

You know, every time I see something about or by Jean Paul Gaultier it puts a smile on my face. I met him once at a party and he was so nice. Tons of talent and someone who deserves every bit of the success he gets.

Considering the quality of the clothes, do you think they filmed her in a tank full of chlorinated water? I'd expect to see some bleeding colors, if so.

I would love to get the behind the scenes story on the shoot!

Breathtaking.

Guys, this is so beautiful. Really. Thank you for this post!

That's the first thing I thought. No, they're all wet. LOL.
Getting wet for fashion : )

My baby! Love her! Loved the movie "Grey Gardens"! Love the underwater shot!

The subscriber's cover is amazing. Why didn't they make that the actual cover?!?

this is such a stunning editorial! i think i have a new found appreciation for drew barrymore now.

Drew is really doing well these days and these photos demonstrate that.

I loved the photos, cover shot excepted.

Yayyy! I no longer feel embarrassed to love my girl Drew. Been a (quiet) fan for years but now I can just love her 'cuz dat bitch is fierce. Plus, all the shit she's been through...she deserves it.

I LOVE YOU DREW! (In a very non-lesbian way.)

I was just musing on this.

Why is Drew engaged in such a wall-to-wall fashion onslaught now? Is she genuinely just having fun, or is this a planned "in the spotlight" run-up to a new movie coming out?

It just seems atypical for her. Smashingly wonderful, don't get me wrong, but atypical.

She is trying to sell movie tickets. I paid to see Titanic in the theatre three times. The third time was execlusively for the purpose of viewing the custumes. Half the fun of Sex and the City-he Movie was studying the clothes.

the photos are gorgeous, but i really wish they'd brought in a hairdresser to touch up her roots.

most of us would take care of our roots for a job interview or a particularly interesting first date, let alone for being on the cover of elle!

I thought roots were a deliberate part of her look. Especially when she really does her lashes up big in the darker color, it makes the roots pop and gives her a vibrant two-toned look. She seems to look more washed out when she is just blonde.

Am I the only one who thinks Drew looks better with a bit more weight on her? All the mags made a big deal a while back about her "new sleek look" and how faboo it is, but honestly, I think she would look prettier and sexier with some of her puppy fat back. Her beauty, for me, always was about the curves -- curves of her body, curves of her face, curves of her mouth. Now she looks rather gaunt and generic. The photo shoot is beautiful, though.

I just ADORE Drew. Always have, always will. She is IN IN IN, and these are the most beautiful shots I've ever seen of anyone.

Way to go Zee and Elle!!!!!

I am so sad that I am not rich, because I want that Gaultier gown right now!! And the Armani one, too! They are absolutely gorgeous, albeit in very different ways. The Armani is flowy, and looks like spring, the Gaultier is just so interesting, and reminds me of fall. Gorgeous!

Very very pretty and fun and artistic.

I have to agree with the hair/roots issue in the Jean Paul Gaultier Spring 2009 Collection pic...

Gorgeous!

Wow, the shots of her in the pink Armani gown are breathtaking!

I love these pictures, and I love Drew, so it's a win-win.

The Armani reminds me of Leanne's petals.
Drew=gorgeous!

Correction: She is campaigning for Emmy. And while it is almost certain that Drew will get a nod, and a Golden Globe to boot, Jessica Lange is taking the Emmy home.

Still Anon E. Mous

Is it just me or has Armani stolen Judy's noodles?

Those water pics are amazing!!!

And I loved all her dresses!!!

Definetely IN!

I TOTALLY agree. I was kind of bummed out when she did her skinny makeover - she was so much cuter and more unique-looking before.

But this photo shoot was stunning. Well done, Drew!
