Alek Wek in i-D Magazine

i-D magazine celebrates The Best of British Icons in the fashion world by featuring the amazing Alek Wek.

We've got little to add to this one, kittens. There's a reason she rose to the top ranks of her profession and it would be easy to assume that it was due entirely to her striking looks, but one look at these pictures confirms it: that girl is a freaking MODEL. She doesn't just wear the clothes; she makes them sing for her.

Stunningly beautiful!

I think in every case, the clothes look better in the shoot than on the runway. Which is odd considering on the runway, they're actually moving and in the photo shoot, it's all manufactured.

The bitch is bad!

I can imagine that Korto would go to town with her.

God, she is AMAZING, isn't she?

GORGE!!!!!

I'd love to see her wearing one of Korto's necklaces.

Now THAT's what I call a model.

I remember when she went on Oprah to talk about being a black supermodel, her career, upbringing, etc. and Oprah was so excited to have her on the show. Oprah said something like "They didn't have anything like you in the magazines growing up." It was very sweet.

I am glad that she is so successful and I wish her continuing success.

When she first arrived on the scene I thought that she would just be percieved as a novelty, especially in America. There have been other African women like Iman or Liya Kebede (sp?) , but Alek's face looks alot like the old "pickanany" dolls and other African American slave memorabilia that African Americans try to forget. I think it is wonderful that Alek Wek exists and gives a new beauty to our African past simply by being herself.

"She doesn't just wear the clothes; she makes them sing for her."

Dead-on. They move so beautifully on her.

I think if I was one of the runway models pictured and saw these shots, I'd just go back to college and become a lawyer. Yowsa. No comparison.

She is fantastic.

The photographer did a great job too, the lighting is beautiful.

a third laura

her skin is so beautiful- i could look at her all day.

not to mention the fabulous profile. she knows exactly how to work every single cell in her body!

and it really is magical the way she infuses the clothes (and the photos) with emotion, action, passion...

I love Alek Wek, she is so statuesque. Nice to see her again, it's been awhile. I like all of these but the one of her in Marc Jacobs. There is something off but I can't put my finger on it.

Wow. She's amazing. And what a collaboration between model and photographer. In their hands, the clothes seem transformed. Suddenly, each piece has a context, a time and a place.

I remember when I first saw Alek in a magazine. As a child I thought, "she's so awesome, but if she went to my school, she'd be made fun of, especially by the black kids, for being black and bald." I know, because I am black and nappy(formerly bald).
I think she is other-worldly beautiful.

Love her. I'm not really up on the popular fashion models these days, but she's one that truly stands out.

Simply amazing! She IS a supermodel.

I hate to say it, but you are speaking truth there.

Now THIS is a super model!! ANTM and MMASM need to plaster Alex's pic all over their sets and model houses.
And, TLo, you really hit the nail on the head when you said, "She doesn't just wear the clothes, she makes them sing for her!".

What a contast between Alek the supermodel and the generic waifs who troll the runways.

I can't take my eyes off the profile shot with the flower! What a gorgeous photograph. It looks as if it should be the cover of a coffee table book!!
I agree with the earlier post, "she is otherworldly beautiful"!!

It's not as if Alek is exactly a size 4, you know. Why is there always this constant harping about models' bodies? Models are thin. That will never change. Sheesh.

I keep thinking she looks like she's having so much fun in every picture. I love that first yellow dress, but it's mainly because there's just so much happiness pushing out of the page in the picture.

She is one of my all time favorite modles. Every thing about her embodies fashion and style.
She also looked beautiful at the Met gala in a fushia mini dress.

She's an amazing talent...not just for her incredible beauty, but her undeniable skill at what she does. Those clothes really do sing for her...I look at these pictures and think she is worth every penny a designer would pay her! Why is she not in EVERY AD?!?!?!

Yeah, she's absolutely striking, isn't she? Impossible to see those photos and not stop in your tracks and keep looking. She has the presence that a lot of models can only wish for.

She looks STUNNING. It's a photography and yet you can kind of see her move.

Thank you so much for these fabulous posts, Tlo! I have found a new appreciation for magazine editorials thanks to you.

I could look at these photos all day.

She looks so beautiful in that Yamamoto suit.

GORGEOUS PHOTOS!
She's stunning in person.

another laura

Alex Wek is just gorgeiousity. TLo is so right, she makes the clothes SING!!!

Anybody else frightened by the Vuitton model, bless her heart? Her forehead is so, well, huge, and her legs are so skinny she looks like an ET

I am really happy for Alek Wek for achieving so much after she went through having to move to London with her family and all.

She is one of the most gorgeous black models with a great mind set.

1st Kate Somers looks like she needs "help". Allegra Versace is not someone to be mistaken for. She appears unhealthy to me. Who was casting for LV's runway show? I'm disappointed by their choice.

Yes, Alek Wek is lovely. Thank you again TLo for the attention you bring to thought-provoking spreads. Ms. Wek seems like someone the fashion mainstream doesn't know how to deal with. She is so exotic and captivating. I love her, but a supermodel? She hasn't made an impact beyond the fashion world yet. She is super at her job and deserves more work in ads for YSL, RL and GAP. She should be a regular face for those institutions.

She has amazing legs.

She makes all the clothes seem so wearable, even the orange furry one! Absolutely amazing shots.

No, she makes the clothes sing AND dance! I've always loved Alex Wek. She is one amazing model. And she seems like a classy lady on top of it.

Sorry, Alek, not Alex. My fingers went their own way. Still love her!

I think I've seen that Dior dress on Mischa Barton. If it's the same one, I'm amazed because I thought it looked ugly and ridiculous. But seeing it on Wek, I love it.

Amazing how the right body can change the dress.

This is what I truly enjoy looking at among the pool of those genetically equipped to model - an ectomorph with muscle who looks like she could hold her own, not as if she'd be blown over by the back draft from a passing bicyclist.

Whomever commented on the sought-after collaboration between model and photographer which seems to be happening here (Brooklyn Bomber, maybe?) was dead on.

I love that profile shot-it is simply exquisite.

Alex Wek is one of those rare women who actually are supermodels.

Stunning. Absolutely stunning.

She makes that awful Louis Vuitton dress look fabulous!

She is BRINGING IT ten times harder than the runway models, and I love love love that hair.

My husband just sang out:

Who wants the woman with the skinny legs?

(bonus point to anyone who gets the reference)

Alek is fab, however. Thanks so much for the beautiful morning, TLo.

There are some colors that look fabulous on black women and make white women look like death warmed over, and there are two excellent examples of this in the photos above. Seriously, if you're pale, stay away from certain shades of yellow. If you're dark....rock that dress!

Breathtaking! I love it!

After seeing this week's MMASM, I can really appreciate the first shot. It's all about the jewelery, but Alek's grace and style still manage to shine through.

As much as I liked the recent pics with Drew Barrymore, boy--it is nice to see a model modeling clothes.

Cedar, I'm with you

Let's get back to models modeling!!!

Wow.

I read your intro with a raised eyebrow, thinking the praise mere exaggeration. But, you're absolutely right-- each photo was better than the next! Kinda reignites my passion for fashion.

Beautiful/ugly women are always the most exciting-- Alek Wek... Tilda Swinton... and Franka Potente (Run Lola Run) come to mind. I enjoy their changeability-- homely from one angle, insanely lovely from another. When one's eye captures the fleeting beauty, it seems much more rare & exciting.

I have always loved her. She makes this brown girl proud

WOW! She is such an elegantly beautiful woman and has such presence and charisma.

I think she looks beautiful from all angles. And her fantastic skin tone sets off so many colors. Her face is iconic.

To be fair, I think the first runway model is quite lovely and does not look pale or washed out in the yellow dress.

I hope we all can get to the point where we find beauty in different skin tones, from the very dark to the very pale.

Love the Josephine Baker visual reference.

Stunning is not a term I use lightly or often...Alek is STUNNING.

TLO I have been meaning to comment on your amazing ability to identify and find the precise runway photo of SO MANY OUTFITS !!! You are truly impressive.

And Finally, that last Louis Vuitton model is an alien I think...possibly Venutian or Martian. Yikes !

She's gorgeous. Great blog, guys!

it doesn't matter WHAT she wears. SHE'S a work of art.

The profile of her wearing Yohji Yamamoto could hang on a museum wall.

Ms. Vandal.

honesty.not.pc

She is just fantastic! So lovely. Her skin is so beautiful.

In the second picture, she looks like Josephine Baker.
http://fascinatingpeople.files.wordpress.com/2008/07/josephine-baker_banana-skirt_2.jpg

She makes that hideous orange thing almost OK looking! Whoa.

I know a few brothas who would have that second pic as a portrait in their living room.

Didn't even realize that that she pulled an Elaine Benes there.

From now on, I'm calling her "nip"!

*wagging finger* you better WORK!

Wow! Alek is really beautiful! A real woman with a real personality, not some vacant-faced clone. Fabulous! She is the only one who can pull off that hideous Louis Vuitton muppet dress.

omg, everything looks SO MUCH BETTER on her than it does on the runway model! she is amazing.

The clothes become magic on her.

I love how Uliana Tikhova looks in that picture over there! She is simply gorgeous.

Dead-on. They move so beautifully on her.
