Top 10 Project Runway Models: 1-5

#5 - Morgan Quinn - Season 1

MORGANZA!!!! Come on, could there be any doubt? She brought the crazy on a daily basis but she also brought the fierce. Once she put aside all the bullshit and just did her job, she always performed amazingly.

#4 - Shannone Holt - Season 5

It seems like we barely got to see Shannone before she was whisked away from us. Still, in her relatively short tenure, she made an impact and stood head and shoulders above her competitors with a combination of poise and fierceness. The girl gave damn good face.

#3 - Amanda Fields - Season 3

All you really have to do is look at those pictures to see why Amanda rated so high. The girl is a chameleon. Better yet, she's a chameleon with a fucking killer walk.

#2 - Camilla Barungi - Season 3

Despite her highly specific - and highly striking - look, Camilla is able, through force of personality and subtle shifts in body language, to seem like a different person depending on what she's wearing. Plus the bitch just screams "poise."

#1 - Grace Kelsey - Season 2

BITCH. IS. FIERCE. Nothing else needs to be said. Well, okay, we'll say one more thing: she was and is an incredibly professional, no bullshit model. Never brought an ounce of drama to the proceedings and managed to look like a completely different person depending on the look.

Honorable Mentions
Tia Shipman - Season 5; Marilinda Rivera - Season 3; Tarah Rodgers - Season 2 Nicole Zaager - Season 5; Lea Rannells - Season 4; Rebecca Holliday - Season 2

So, who are your picks?

that Versace photo of her is so striking!

Over all I agree but I'm sad to see there is no love for Marie from S4. I always thought she was terribly underrated and definitely better than Nicole from S5 (seriously?)

Great list guys, and I agree with everyone except Grace. Her features are just a bit too severe for my tastes. I guess I prefer a softer look like Amanda's.

Good honorable mention of Tarah. Man, did she ever get screwed by Shatangi!!!!

And Nicole's stance always bothered me. Plus she has that Penelope Cruz effect. Striking from one angle, but looks like a duck from another angle.

Still think that Nazri should've been ranked higher, though.

But I can't argue between your choices for #2 or #1. It really could've gone either way.

Methinks Grace had an advantage for being a redhead. Right, TOM???

;0)

Whatever happened to Morganza?

Love everyone of your choices. It's tough to narrow it down to 10.

She's still working. She's with Major Model Management NYC now.

YES! Grace is fabulous!!!

I totally agree with your top five choices!! Even though it has been mentioned that Grace's features are a bit severe, to me, she is the perfect couture model. That Versace photo IS stunning!
I'm still kind of wishing that Nazri had been ranked higher, though!

CanIGetYouAnything?

Amanda rocks and I'm glad she's doing well. Those pictures really show how versatile she can be.

I think Rebecca Holliday had to have been my all time favorite.

Rebecca had a fabulous body. Her walk was so fierce, it helped Daniel a lot. I love Nicole's face, she always looked sweet and happy, and kind of bemused when she wore Jerrell's crazier outfits.

I really liked Santino's main model, I can't remember her name, but she was beautiful. She recently showed up on some horrible celereality show, pregnant with some douche bag's baby.

How could you leave out Lisa Nargi!? Not even an honorable mention!?

I'm still surprised that you put Nazri at the bottom of your list, and Camilla so close to the top, using the argument that Nazri only had "one look." Camilla is as one-note as they come! Don't get me wrong: she's GORGEOUS and a terrific model. But she only has one look.

Fun list, boys. Keep 'em coming! I love to read everyone's opinions.

I can't believe we have to wait all summer for Season 6 to debut. Argh.

Yes, that picture of Grace posing in the ice skating dress is my absolute favorite. I didn't think it was real when you used it the 1st time.
I agree with the top ten list. And the honoralbe mentions. Plus I thought Rami's red headed model and Victorya's model that wore the Avant Garde look were excellent also.

" Anonymous said...

They probably HATE her. And they probably HATE you for liking her.

Grace looks quite like the awesome Tilda Swinton to my eyes, so it is a distraction from the fashion when I watch her walk down the runway. I see the resemblance as a plus and a minus. Melissa seems most vibrant as a swimsuit/lingerie specific model (expect to see her on SI cover one of these days) so she would have had the #10 spot on my list. Nazri would have been in the top 5, Morgan in the bottom 5.

What show? Who's the douche bag?

" PJ said...

Morgan bottom 5??? Some of you are delusional. Let me tell you something, if they both audition for a show, Morgan would get the job and Nazri would go home for being a bad walker. Nazri has a certain look but her walk SUCKS. I work for an agency and she would not be our clients' first, second or third pick for a show.

If she is THAT great, where the hell is she? Do you see her walking for anyone these days????

I guess I'm ignorant fashion-wise, but how can a model be "talented"?

You put on an outfit, you walk down a runway and take a photo. How hard can that be?

I love Camilla, Amanda, and Grace! They really are amazing models.

WHAT??????? OK, I'm out of here. Next post!

I never know if I'm letting my preferences for body type, bone structure & "look" override people who actually show the clothes well.

Grace is the perfect example, I love what she could do with her body on the runway - but really, am I supposed to be noticing that, or the clothes? Sometimes it really worked to show off a piece, other times I'm not so sure. I'm also a sucker for actual visible muscles, and little flashes of "personality" over the continuous stone face - so I guess it boils down to what the designer thinks works for his/her clothes.

I do enjoy these retrospective lists.

Interesting - I would have picked the same top three, but I would have probably put Amanda in the top spot.

I agree with what you're saying but how can you not "look" at Naomi, Linda, Christie or Gisele? I think that's the reason why they become great models.

I was pleasantly surprised to see Grace at #1. Of the girls here I'd say she was the most editorial and she floats down the runway. I always loved how Chloe gave Grace her props in helping her win. And as glad as I am that she appeared on the show, I always wondered why she bothered? This was a girl who had already booked the runways of Milan.

It's cool she reads this blog. Wish she's write back again

Camilla to me has a more interesting walk on the runway than Nazri. I think Nazri would work much better in print

I forget Amanda modeled 4 losing dresses!

Frank

Nice way to end the list. Can't really argue with any of the choices but I am firmly in the Amanda camp. She amazes me.

at anon who asked how a model can be talented. wow! what a question.

im not a model - but everyone tells me i look like one or i should be one (shoot, not that i believe them lol i mean i havent been 'discovered' yet. every single time i've tried to like strike a model like pose or convey random emotions on my face or even walk - i've failed miserably - so even though ppl tell me i could or i should i know i probably can't - don't have the talent - models work hard homie!

as for me im content being an engineer who looks like a model. nerds are sexy.

Thanks for the list!

Yes being a good model takes talent and insight. The model is helping to sell the clothes. That ability goes beyond their body. That's why some high level designers only want certain models and are willing to pay out to them tens of thousands a day to have a certain girl hawk their stuff.

There are plenty of pretty faces and hot bodies out there. Few of them have the ability or brains to elevate the look of the clothes they are wearing

Also it takes a person who's willing to be very open and vulnerable in photos.

Frank

I wish Marilinda had made the list -- her walk in Jeffrey's haute couture dress was incredible, and she matched it in his runway finale.

What a fun list, though! Love the love for Grace & Camille, my two favorites too.

Oh, and I would have rated Jenny - Season 1 (Kara Saun's model) over Rebecca - Season 2 (Daniel Vosovik's).

How does a model need "talent" and "brains" to elevate the look of anything? They're told how to walk, they're told how to pose, they're told how to dress. Seems the real talent lies with the people who make their look.

All a model has to do is be tall and thin. Some don't even have to be "pretty" in a conventional sense.

I was going to post a "what, no love for Amanda?" in the posts yesterday because most of the folks listing their top 10's did not have her on their list. She is my favorite. I also loved Nazri and Camilla.

I have to say that I never really got the whole "runway model thing" until I saw "Make Me a Supermodel." Even though some of the challenges are downright silly, I have come away with a great deal of respect for the models and what they do.

I'm looking forward to Lifetime's runway model companion series to "Project Runway" for even more insight. Every profession has it's nuances that are not always apparent to those on the outside.

By the way, Bravo to the Magic Elves and Bravo to TLo for such a colorful list. Unfortunately, the industry is still not as colorful as it should be.

I think you pretty much nailed it, TLo. That 6-foot redhead Grace was great on the show, and she's a great editorial print model, too (a term I picked up from ANTM, thank you very much). I think somebody said it yesterday, that she did the show a favor by deigning to do it.

I'm shocked that you completely forgot Lisa, Christian's model. I always thought she did a fabulous job for him.

Other than that, great top 10.

Marilinda is an awesome model! I wish she were in your top 10 because, honestly, I believe that Jeffrey would not have won if it weren't for her selling his hideous "looks" on the runway. JMHO.

Great list, I'd forgotten about some of the girls in the first half but not the top 5. Great choices. I love that they get such quality black models aswell. There are always fewer of them but they stand out!

Grace Kelsey! I went to high school with her, she was a smart girl, clearly doomed by her genes to become a model even then, and she naturally had long, flowing blonde hair too!

Amanda looks FABULOUS in that picture. Great list, guys!

They require talent and brains the same way an actor or dancer does. A director will tell the actor/dancer what they want to go for, but it is still up to the eprformer to make it happen. A good model knows how to make a questionable garment look better and a good garment great. They have to give a performance on the runway or in a photo shoot. That performance quality is not obvious until you see someone who's an inferior model try the same task

Better models like better actors are able to interpret what the point of the shoot/runway is and how to give the desired performance or direction more effectively and expediently.

Frank

Yup, Yup, Yup, Yup, and Yup.

Thanks for the list, guys! Please continue with those, they're fun : )

Oh, and I had no idea Grace had posed for Versace(and that picture was taken by Steven Meisel; even more fabu!/It's on her site) Check her out!

I kind of understand where you're coming from, but the more accomplished actors/artists/designers specifically train for these positions. What model needs to undergo training for that when they're surrounded by people who have done the training to make a look?

I just don't understand the "difficulty" and "plight" that a millionaire model has to go through when all they have to do is walk and pose. Dosen't sound like a hard life at all, and dosen't really sound like it takes much "ability" other then to have the right dna.

Anonymous asked

What show? Who's the douche bag?
The show was Tool Academy on Vh1. I don't remember the guy's name, but he was horrible. I was surprised such a pretty girl would give him the time of day.

"I just don't understand the "difficulty" and "plight" that a millionaire model has to go through when all they have to do is walk and pose. Dosen't sound like a hard life at all, and dosen't really sound like it takes much "ability" other then to have the right dna."

Who said anything about their "plight" or the relative difficulty of their jobs? You asked about what sort of talent it requires and that should be self evident just be looking through your own collection of family photos or just by sitting on a bench somewhere and watching people walk by. It takes a certain amount of talent and training to be able to be photographed well enough and often enough to make a living out of it and it takes the same amount of talent and training to walk a runway in such a way as to show off clothing to its best advantage.

And if you haven't already revealed your ignorance on the matter, your "millionaire model" crack sealed the deal. Virtually no working models make that kind of money.

Models work hard. I know that might sound crazy but they do. Most of the times a model arrive at 7 a.m. for a photo shoot and work all day until 7 or 8 p.m. Sometimes they're in the water all day, posing in swimwear when it's freezing outside or wearing a heavy coat when it's 90 degrees...Yes, they're not chopping down trees, shoveling coals or digging a slit trench or saving lives, but it is a lot work, believe it not.

Well, I already started off by saying that I wasn't fashion-saavy about this whole business, so you're not reporting anything original. Sorry.

Can we have this conversation without you getting hysterical about it?

" Anonymous said...

Yes, we can. Especially since there isn't a thing in my previous response that could reasonably be construed as "hysterical."

I 150% agree with your top 3. I don't really disagree with the rest, but those 3 are absolutely my top 3.

Agreed. Brains might not be the right word though--possibly knowledge. Naomi Campbell (a very good model) never struck me as book smart, but she certainly can find the right light, angle, and attitude to sell a product, portray a mood, and capture a moment. No different than an actor, dancer, figure skater, gymnast, etc.

Yay for Grace! Love her! Kinda surprising Marilinda didn't pull higher, like others before me, I believe she sold Jeffrey's garments. Especially the couture challenge.

And cheers to the nod for Nicole and Tia, who probably saved their designers asses more than a few times.

As to the whole "talented model" thing. Look at ANTM. If that's all there was to modeling, those girls would be hugely successful. There is an innate ability to do it. To represent the look and feel of the designer. And most people would consider an innate ability a talent.

Modeling is a human activity. Some people can do it better than others, and some do it worse. The difference between the two is called "ability" and "talent".

Anonymous said...I just don't understand the "difficulty" and "plight" that a millionaire model has to go through when all they have to do is walk and pose. While it is not brain surgery, there is a skill or special talent that certain girls possess that makes them good models, namely able to sell and / or elevate the clothes. I won't name names, but there were other PR models who were younger, thinner and prettier than the ones who made this list, but they couldn't sell the garment.

What season did Grace have a versace campaign?

I, too love Grace, but Rebecca Holliday should have been in the top 5. She is so stunning.

I know I am the only one here who thinks this, but Grace was the only project runway model I specifically disliked. Her extreme skinniness and boniness I found painful to look at. I am sure there have been other super skinny models on PR, but she was in the winning looks so often that you saw a lot more of her.

MORGANZA!!!

That is all.

Waiting Til August

Score! Ive been waiting for this list. I can't say I agree with it, but I enjoyed the trip down memory lane in this PR wasteland (now that PR Can is over).

On the model discussion: I think its interesting how many of the good/top 10 models were paired with designers where they seemed a natural fit. Camilla and Laura. Grace and Chloe. LeeAnne and her first model, Karyln. I think these naturally helped the models convey better energy on the runway. Much better than someone walking for a designer they didnt care for (personally or aestheticaly).

Overall, it is sad the attention to the models has declied over the seasons (as well as model calibre). Season 1 had awesome models, nearly every single one. S2 and S3 had a few stinkers, but most of them were pretty good. S4 and S5 had maybe 3-4 good models the whole season. It didnt help that the had so many challenges that didnt utilize the model.

oh yeah, Marilinda should be top 5. She is the example of a model with talent, one who elevated Jeffrey's, making them sexier, edgier, and Fashion.

fashionablylate

Grace does not appeal to me at all, and neither does Camilla. I would've given Amanda the top stop, she's amazing!

fashionablylate

Uh, that's top SPOT, of course, duh...

I knew that it'd be Grace! I'm surprised Lea didn't make it though... :(

TARAH!!! I wish she had made the list... she was badass enough to destroy in the ifamous walkoff and losing her destroyed uncle nick's entire focus. I think that indicates she was a damn good model. However, 1-5 are pretty correct... i might drop amanda a place or two for the fainting though hahaha

Grace is so lovely, but I think that Versace photo is deeply unflattering. Just... ugh. She's great though.

Marie, Kit Pistol's model from Season 4! (Both of them gone far too soon!) Gorgeous with her dark-haired pixie look, and a fierce lesbian for me to crush on from afar!

T_T Why Heather isn't there? She was very pretty too, besides she always modeled all the stuff Santino made without saying a word.

This is true! I think Julia and Jay were a great team! The first winner didn't make the list!

Glad to see an Anon pick up on the proclamation that models NEED BRAINS??

Few of them have the ability or brains to elevate the look of the clothes they are wearing ----------------------
This kind of comment kind of explain why so many people think models and actors have opinions / insights more worth listening to than, say business people or "nerds". As a fairly successful and intelligent person who most definitely is NOT model material, I say - appreciate them for what they do - take interesting pictures, walk as directed, and be human hangers that are not supposed to overstage the clothes. I am not saying that there cannot be models with brains - but I know that in my career you can ONLY be successful if you have a brain (it is not a peripheral matter.)

------------------------
All a model has to do is be tall and thin. Some don't even have to be "pretty" in a conventional sense.Maybe not entirely, but close.

I know alot of people look down on ANTM - but Cecelia seems a lot smarter than most, likes and knows fashion, is NOT very pretty but can usually pose and walk.

Bennifer Lopez

grace rocks! does anyone know what is she doing now? still modeling? tks.

Tarah is still my all-time favorite. She transcended the model-designer relationship and became something of a muse to Uncle Nick, and I think that would have more than qualified her for top 10 material. Plus, she really deserves some sort of retroactive credit after being kidnapped by Zulema.

Omigosh, Yes Grace. So magnificent.

Model haters are the brainless.

Grace is rather Swinton-like, no?

Morgan would have placed toward the back of the pack for me, though.

I always thought Camille was a shrewd model--she picked Laura, Laura didn't pick her. And Camille gave Laura's clothes an edge that kept them from seeming staid. So I think she deserves her rank--she had, as I recall, some actual input to the challenge Laura won as well.

As for ability--good models have to have a good body sense--what they look like, how to project. It's not book smarts, but it is a physical intelligence. Naomi Campbell trained as a dancer--doesn't hurt.

Oddly enough, there's not a huge cross-over between acting and modeling ability. Models are often too self-conscious to make good actors--the most successful models turned actresses weren't particularly successful models (i.e. Cameron Diaz).

Love the list!

Definitely the best 3: Amanda, Camilla and Grace.

" Joanie said...

She is fabulous. I love her and she is hilarious!

Tarah was a good model and I'll never forget her walk for Nick when she wore the Barbie outfit.

Got to disagree about Grace - she looks like a dude in drag in every one of the photos!

Only a model would say something that "poignant".

potty mouth princess

I was so sure TLo would have Camilla at #1, so I am surpised and pleased. Grace is working with the big boys (and I think she had been on a smaller scale before PR casting). She's ultra cutoure (sorry for the spelling, it's late and I'm tired), but as we saw can embody Chloe's more commercial vision.

I think Amanda (love ya beeyotch!) is the opposite; other than with PR designers, have we seen her walk with a name designer known for more edgy looks? I can see her doing Kors for 15 years.

Sorry, but Morganza was not professional and if the antics she pulled happened in the real world, she wouldn't be working now. I don't care how fierce she was when she showed up. The bottom line is....show up, especially for the Jaybird. He's lucky Austin fit into the postal deliveryperson outfit.

I also hate that her breakdown is the only time I could commend Wendy Pepper.

The bottom line is....show up, especially for the Jaybird. He's lucky Austin fit into the postal deliveryperson outfit. That was Julia who didn't show up, not MORGANZAAAA. Though I'm sure Austin would have walked well in Jay's wedding dress, were that the case.

Lord knows Morgan had her faults, but I would FLOVE to see her model the postal worker outfits, or any of those awful Nancy O'Dell looks.

LOVE your picks, especially please-shut-up-and-be-pretty Amanda. She's fab!

I like Lea.

The model selection from season one was great, most of them were gorgeous.

I LOVE all the readers and Tom and Lorenzo! You guys are the best! Thank you for all the love! <3

Model argument aside, I heart Grace and knew she'd be at the top.

Does anyone think Shannone looks a little like Eartha Kitt? Something about the eyes and the expression - she has the air. I think that's why I like her so much too.

I disagree. Nicole has an amazing face and she's a great walker. I mean, who else would put up with and wear such monstrosities and still be able to keep a smile and sashay on the runway?

Grace Kelsey: Jag tror att det är min absoluta favoritmodell.

they could all use a fucking sandwich. these are gorgeous women, all of them, but jesus fucking mary and joseph, i am so tired of seeing every centimeter of their clavicles so clearly defined. yes, celebrate their talent (and yes, it requires talent to be a successful model), sure, but encourage them to look like women. skinny? fine! emaciated? NO!

Late to the party, but what a fun stroll down memory lane. Thanks, Boys.

I'd have put Nazri & Melissa much higher up . . . perhaps they're my two favorites.

And I'd probably have swapped out a couple of your top picks and made room for Tarah & Rebecca. But it doesn't matter -- this was fun.

MODELS. ARE. THIN. GET OVER. IT.

give me a fucking break, in the hright of their careers christy turlington, linda evangelista, and tyra banks never looked that horrifyingly frail. they had tits. twiggy was thin, but there is a goddamned difference between thin and malnourished.

i agree WhitLin, all that sternum is rather unpleasant to look at.

I never thought that Grace looked good in any of the clothes. Too skinny. I'm not against skinny per se, but with her (maybe combined with her very wide shoulders) it just doesn't look good.

I am also extremely happy to see Grace at number one, but I continue to wonder why she was even on the show. I mean, talk about a veteran with all the cred in the world. Even though there were some amazing models on season 2, Grace was at a totally different level. And talk about a versatile model, the girl is a freaking chameleon who does print and runway extremely well.

I think Eden Henderson (Kara Janx's model) and Topacio Pena (Joe Faris' and then Kenley's model) at least deserved honorable mention. And I agree with whoever said that Jaclyn (Victorya's model) should have been on the list as well.

And I also wanted to mention one reason why I respect the producers of the show so much. IN an industry where women of color have a notoriously difficult time getting through and walking on the runways for top designers, I think it is AMAZING that Project Runway has committed itself to having so much diversity among its models. I think it has helped show why women of color can play such an important role to the industry, as evidenced by the list above.

If only the real modeling world was as inclusive for women of color as Project Runway is.

Can't believe I missed this list when it was posted! I would have rated Nazri higher, and Camilla will always be my #1, but other than that, I'm with you. Standouts, all of them.

I'm boney with big shoulders.
I hate that about myself too. WAH!

PS and if you're generically beautiful, then perhaps you can get by without any brains, but when you're weird looking like me, then one must rely heavily on the skill set to be transformable, interpret the ideas of your directors and regurgitate it in a way that works with your own physique and angles. When its up to me I DO NOT wear clothing that shows my shoulder bone, No choice on PR though. And that Versace image is my least favorite of anything I've done, BUT it is Versace so I get why its there, but I'd encourage any of my critics to do the research and check my site before judging. AND I eat more than anyone I know just have a really high metabolism, naturally. It was the bane of my existence as a child. Check the kid's photos on the post they put up for me ages ago. OK now that that done... thanks so much for ranking me so high I love you guys!

grace is a gazelle.... a graceful being from another dimension.so fluid, chameleon like.an ever changing blossom in the spotlights...
basically, she rocks.but he has UGLY feet.

ANd-adding to my last comment....she eats like a horse, never refuses food, has be known to scarf everyone else's pizza including her own,and never gains a pound....bitch!

Me again!! I too would love to see more girth or atleast variety in the modeling industry unfortunately the reason we all have to fit a specific standard is we ALL have to wear the same clothing. ONE piece is used for show, 100 editorial spreads, advertising, showroom sales..etc. The size frame is very specific because of this, designers cannot afford to produce multiple sizes until it arrives in stores, and variety cannot exist due to these budget conflicts. I wish this were not the case as I want EVERYONE to be happy with the shape that they are naturally because so long as one is feeling healthy they should be feeling good about themselves too. I think attractiveness lies in charisma and outward good energy. If you feel attractive, you ARE attractive. I saw a large large woman in biker shorts and a sports bra galumping down the street and all I could think was "Damn, she's attractive" because she was obviously feelin good about herself. It was beaming out of her. As a younger model I always felt guilty about including myself in the collection of thin people in magazines. It is a disturbing phenomena and sizes have gotten smaller still, so that even I no longer fit the industry size bracket and I too worry about the health of some of these girls. Agents do a terrible job of maintaining "healthy" eating habits and are very flippant about the commentary or "advise" that spews out of their mouths especially when directed to young impressionables. Thank god for those Dove body wash billboards to illustrate large women who still look great in their skivies... I know it sound weird coming from me but I've always wanted to design a plus size label because there should be more options available to a variety of sizes. Once weight is added, the areas people hold their weight varies a lot and I think this is why big designers rarely produce anything above a size 8. Unpredictable sizing. But this does not mean people (with taste) should not produce clothing in a variety of shapes and lord knows there's a market for it, especially in America.
