Shelley O Watch: Days 4, 5, and 6

Labels:

Ladies, we've got some ground to cover, so let's get cracking.

President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama (in
Azzedine Alaïa) arrive for a cultural event
at the Kurhaus during the NATO summit in Baden-Baden, Germany.

She looks good. Not great, but good. She favors black a lot, which is understandable, a lot of women do. But someone needs to tell her that just because black is flattering doesn't mean it's the best option for her. We've said it before: rich colors, Shelley. You were born to wear them. Also not loving the full skirt on her, but this one's not as bad as that Jason Wu dress she wore the other day, possibly because it looks like she's wearing a slightly higher heel.

Later, she paired it with a cardigan and ...surprise! We don't hate it:
First Lady Michelle Obama at the spouses' evening at the opening
of the NATO summit in Baden Baden, Germany.

That cropped version suits her. If she insists on wearing them, she should go with this cut more often.

Michelle Obama visits the Notre Dame Cathedral in Strasbourg, France.

She looks good in slacks because she's got such long legs and the jacket (again, by Azzedine Alaïa) works in theory. What we mean by that is the cut and silhouette should work for her, but in this case it's looking very boxy and a little overstuffed.

She appears to be wearing some sort of blouse, plus a scarf, plus a belt under there. She'd have been better off with a blouse or camisole alone.

For the most part, these looks worked for her, with only some minor missteps in the details. Then...THIS happened:

First lady Michelle Obama and first lady Livia Klausova during a visit to the Old City in Prague

President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama at Hradcany Square in Prague.

Oversize bow top by Moschino, Michael Kors black pencil skirt, Azzedine Alaïa belt

What? How? WHO DID THIS TO YOU, SHELLEY? Who let you leave the hotel room looking like that? This may actually be one of the worst outfits we've seen her in. Sleek, classic and tailored is the only way to go with her. Big flouncy details like that awful bow are incredibly wrong. So wrong, that we don't know how anyone could look at themselves in the mirror wearing something like that and not see it. Plus, that belt is so ridiculously high that all it manages to accomplish is to make her look like she has figure flaws she doesn't have.

In other Shelley O news, she's managed to piss of some mighty entitled designers. In an article for WWD, Oscar (the Grouch) de la Renta opened his big mouth and inserted his foot:

"American fashion right now is struggling. I think I understand what [Obama and her advisers] are doing, but I don't think that is the right message at this particular point....I don't object to the fact that Mrs. Obama is wearing J. Crew to whatever because the diversity of America is what makes this country great. But there are a lot of great designers out there. I think it's wrong to go in one direction only."

Oh, shut up, Oscar. Other designers were more diplomatic:

Tommy Hilfiger: "I’m happy that she’s wearing young designers and not only wearing [American] couture, which puts her more in touch with real people."

Michael Kors: "She’s the first First Lady who’s ever worn sportswear. If you think about it, she’s worn everybody from Azzedine Alaïa to Michael Kors to Isabel Toledo or Jason Wu to J. Crew to Donna Ricco."

Carolina Herrera: "I think it’s all right that she chooses young designers, because it’s American fashion that’s going around [the world]. And J. Crew is a huge company, no? It speaks very well of her that she wants to include everyone."

Donna Karan: "I hope and believe that this is just a moment. And I hope to be able to dress her, and not only dress her but address her, sit down -- I'm interested in her totality as a woman."

Donna honey, what the HELL does that even mean?

I have to agree, my dears. The Big Bow Monstrocity just took away from anything that might have been right about That Outfit. Namely, the pencil skirt.

Everything else, hate.

Oh Barack - HOW could you have let her leave the hotel looking like a giant gift box with legs???

I still love her but this was NOT her best moment....

P.S. The other 2 outfits I give a pass cuz it clearly could have been much worse - see comment above!

P.P.S. Who pee-d in Oscar's wheaties?

P.P.P.S. DK is a hoot - in a Paula Abdul kinda way =) hahahahah

The Azzedine Alaïa dress is fitted through the waist and the fullness starts at the hips. That's why it looks better than the other one. She should always wear a fitted waist. Which is what makes THE BELT so puzzling. Who even belts a cardigan? Let alone under the bust? Let alone under a bust dominated by THE BOW. It's just weird.

Yeah, that outfit with the bow was terrible. She lost some steam towards the end. But she gave the world a good show. It's the first time I was proud to see our President and First Lady abroad in decades. Shelley and her man looked spectacular and were as sophisticated as their European counterparts.

what about the tight black dress she wore getting off the plane in prague? that dress was HOT.

http://www.mrs-o.org/?p=5070

First outfit- Love the Azzedine dress, it is especially pretty. The cardigan is a good fit with the dress, too.
2nd outfit- The Azzedine suit looks neat and tidy with the buttons done up. Unbuttoned double breasted almost always looks a bit messy. The bum shot is not kind.
3rd look- I like the blouse with the giant bow. It's kind of a send up on 1st Lady dressing. If the blouse had been tucked in and the belt elimanted, it would have been a hit.
~~~~~~~~
Oscar, you disappoint me.
That last outfit is atrocious. I, too fail to see how anyone could look at themselves in that bow top and that belt and think it looked ok.
Also, as annoying as Oscar's comment is (because he's clearly implying "Why isn't she wearing ME?!?"), I sorta agree with him. Michelle really needs to branch out beyond Jason Wu and Azzedine Alaia (a like, tooootally important designer!) because they really aren't doing that much for her...especially Jason Wu. Ugh, most overrated designer ever. Oh well, I guess that's what fucking buyers at Saks gets you.
Final outfit was, indeed hard to believe. Unflattering, unfashionable and just inexplicable.
I liked the first a lot, (though, color would have been better) and with the cropped cardigan, she just missed, by a tad bit of skirt volume, being very 50's Fashion Barbie. While that may not scream First Lady, it's better than Conservative-Middle-Aged & Stocky, which is where so many wives-of-world-leaders, & female world leaders, past and present, are stuck.
Oscar sounds like his nose is out of joint - can't say that it's a flattering impression to give.
Oh Michelle, you could wear a potato sack and I'd still love you.
I actually liked all the looks sans bow monstrosity. None were the best things she wore on the trip, but she looked appropriate and confidant.
The bow thing, was silly but at least she didn't look ugly. It was more of a scratch your head moment rather than say "Wow, Michelle looks horrible". I think it's really hard for Michelle to look truly awful.
At least the bow wasn't a butt-bow. Lurv Carla Bruni's purple coat though. And nothing we've seen on Michelle has been as bad as Hillary's Headband.
I really like her bangs loose across her forehead vs. up and back.
another laura
I agree with all points made, kittens. That belt around her ribcage is making me crazy. How does it even stay up there? And I just hate the cardigans, oh god this is going to be a long eight years of cardigans. Must. Not. Waste.Energy.Hating.Her.Cardigans.
But the bow. The Bow that Ate Shelley O. She won't make that mistake again.
Do tell, Bailey.
I agree on everything. I have the feeling sleeveless tops are outside the protocol... does anyone know?
I thought the first two looks: GORGEOUS. The first dress is sort of Givenchy-ish, but still looks glam despite being in the basic black.
And on top of that, her hair is FABULOUS! The bangs make her look a little younger and funkier.
The jacket in #2: also FAB. Love the belt. And Mrs. Model-Turned French President's Wife really brought it, too, didn't she?
But I'm totally with you girls on look #3. Off, off, off.
But #44 was looking pretty chic in the dark blue. Oh, I am jealous!
Have you ladies offered your services to Mrs. #44 Pro Bono? After all, we are in a recession, and should look out for our fellow fabulosi.
Geez, Bailey. Tell us what you REALLY think. LMAO!
The bow looks like she's ready to eat out . . . insert pun . . . and forgot to remove the bib.
Although, she did almost make out with the other wench so maybe there's some truth to it.
Gold! LOL!
She wore another black dress for her date with the Prez. Please to comment.
"WHO DID THIS TO YOU, SHELLEY?"
Couldn't have said it any better than that. What a travesty. And the suit just doesn't fit her right.
But I love the Alaia dress on her. I know you Boys don't like full skirts on her at all, but I think this one looks great. And the shrunken cardigan - miracle of miracles, it works.
One more thing (sorry, teehee...)
If the Fabu Bad Mommy can put politics aside, her style and clothing are perfect for ShelleyO.
Well, he wasn't actually a buyer. Jason Wu was a nobody, starting dating his finance guy Gustavo Rangel while he worked at Saks, and then boom: Saks is selling his shit. Call it what you want but it seems a little convenient for me, especially given his age and the unremarkableness of his work.
I almost always disagree with you boys where my beloved Mrs. O is concerned, but I have to say I clutched my pearls when I saw that awful bow costume on CNN. It makes her look like a pregnant clown. She's too gorgeous and classy for such foolishness.
As for Oscar, it isn't that she is "just going in one direction", Grandma, it is just that she isn't going in yours.
----------
Uhhhh, Bailey, my Mother was a buyer at Saks for many years. I kinda am offended at your comment.
That being said, THE BOW was awful.
It might not have been so bad if it were smaller, she dropped the belt (WTH was it doing under her bustline?), and tucked the apron-like blouse in the Kors pencil skirt. Colors are definitely beautiful of Shelly O, I wish she would have stuck with them toward the end of the grand tour.
Still love and admire her, as always, though!
Yummy! Is it wrong that knowing things like this makes me feel like less of a failure? ;)
Let's establish this now, for all eternity:
LARGE BOWS ARE ALWAYS BAD. THEY ARE NEVER GOOD. THEY LOOK TERRIBLE ON EVERYONE, ALWAYS.
Now that that's out of the way: I, too, loved the tight black dress she wore getting off the plane, with the cropped black cardigan. Anyone know who it's by? I covet it.
Adore Carla's purple coat.
One thing I also especially like is that we see her wearing some items (for example, the cropped black cardi, the elbow-length black cardi, the kitten heels, the Alaia belt) as part of different outfits on this trip. I have the sense that she buys carefully, choosing classic pieces she can wear in multiple ways, and also packs carefully.
another laura
Bitches, if you haven't been over there in the past few days, get over to "Tom and Lorenzo" and catch some joy!!
I love the Azzedine dress! It looks like it has a dropped waist and more flare at the hem, which I think is what distinguishes it with the blue one from the other day--high waisted and slightly bubble-shaped. I think this one flatters her legs and figure tremendously.
Donna Karan... what?
Belt under the rib cage...Pregnant?!
oh, also, i love the azzedine dress too! i think it makes her look so youthful and dancer-ish in a totally appropriate way. (and the bangs are gorgeous.) but she cannot really do any wrong in my book. true, the bow outfit was not at all flattering, but i agree with whoever said it would have been okay without the belt and with the shirt tucked in.
One more thing, ladies (sorry again!)
No comment on the Duchess referring to herself in the third person? I thought you girls would be all over that! :0)
bitchybitchybitchy
the Moschino top is awful. Otherwise, liking the looks-and the cropped cardigan looks really good on Michelle.
Oscar's just in a snit because he doesn't have an automatic in in the WH anymore.
Poor Oscar. He was the designer of choice for first ladies for so long and now he can't get the time of day from the first FL in decades whose style women want to copy.
Shoulda seen this one coming. "Change" is here.
"Who even belts a cardigan? Let alone under the bust?"
Lucky Magazine does this all the time! Its fashion people appear to all have the slim, no-waist type of figure, so their fashion advice isn't suited to the hourglass/pear type of woman, generally.
I've never seen anyone belt a cardigan in real life, but in the last year I've noticed an awful lot of high belts and empire waists, walking around -- the LM rationale is that this makes "the narrowest part of your rib cage" look like it's your waist and therefore you look slimmer, but to me the illusion of a super-short back plus most people's poor posture just makes people look weird and possibly, well, deformed.
He didn't, techinically. Michelle Obama has worn Michael Kors THE CLOTHING LINE, and not the man himself. Were MK's line not eponymous and he said "Michael Kors" I would think you had more of a point. I mean, is J. Crew a person?
Whose ribcage ends immediately below the bust?!
Maybe this was her version of Seinfed's "puffy shirt" episode. Maybe she didn't realize how big that bow would be or how high that belt would be. Otherwise, I think she's fab and I love giving a damn about what our first lady is wearing .Who cared what Laura Bush wore?
I love how well rec'd she is (with good reason) and I love that she is Barack's "co-star" - not "supporting actress." I think they're great and I'm so thrilled about all the buzz around them!
xoxoxo
thanks for the post!
I adore the first look (especially with the cropped cardigan). Very Audrey Hepburn. And her hair is looking fabulous.
As for The Bow That Ate Prague: I think MOST women go wrong with bows. They really should not be worn by anyone over the age of 8, who isn't also wearing wrapping paper.
Michelle Obama as Goody Proctor.
"LARGE BOWS ARE ALWAYS BAD. THEY ARE NEVER GOOD. THEY LOOK TERRIBLE ON EVERYONE, ALWAYS."
Unless she's Aretha Franklin.
Mrs Sarkozy upstaged Mrs Obama with her French chic this time.
As a fan of Princess Diana, I see a lot of parallels to Shelly. She used the Emmanuels for significant events like her wedding. They were unknowns too, like Wu whom she used for the inaugural. PD wore bolero jackets to stay warm & stylish w/o taking away from the dress. Due to the sad economy, Shelly couldn't arrive to France in a Chanel or Dior suit. That would have been interesting. Most of all PD would wear some stuff perfectly. Then there would be outfits just a little off or completely WTF were you thinking??!!!
Oscar has dressed Nancy, Hilary and Laura Bush. I think he expected another 1st lady to work w/.
--Frances
well she wore a gorgeous coat the other day, which had a bow, but a little one, so I guess only GIANT bows are never to be worn ;-)
i love the dress with the full skirt (i guess there was some tulle at the hem, adorable!) and the bolero cardigan was super cute. The hair-do she wore with this outfit was the best she ever had.
Carla Bruni's bag reminded me of this little goody:
It is illegal to carry a fake designer bag in France. They arrest people for it & I say good for them!
They should do that here. They should eliminate the Rockefeller Drug Laws, and use all those empty prison slots for people who buy fake designer gear, talk on their cell phones while driving, and double park (on my block).
--GothamTomato
I really love her first hairstyle. I wish she'd wear it like that more often!
Carla Bruni is so fucking fabulous.
Thanks for pointing that out.
OW! my eyes!! my eyes!!!
that outfit with the bow is horrific....makes you wonder WTF she was thinking when she looked in the mirror. the other outfits, eh, some are much better than others. it is fun to finally have a first lady who makes such interesting choices with her wardrobe.
but if she doesn't want folks to be speculating on her "baby bump" maybe she needs to not do that belting so high up on her bod...
Except for the Azzedine Alaia dress, I hate every outfit in this post. I think Oscar de la Renta could've been a little more diplomatic but he does have a point. She needs to stop "shopping" somewhere else.
Sorry, i meant "to start shopping"
That last outfit looked like a maternity dress I wore in the 70"s
I'm seeing a lot of bows for spring, and it makes me want to find the one responsible, take them out back and smack them with a 2X4. What the hell were they thinking! No one over the age of 5 should wear big bows.
And I really think Oscar's comment is going to come back to bite him in the butt. Deservedly so, even though I usually love his work.
Ok, I'm curious if anyone else sees the same thing I do. To me, it looks like she's wearing that hideous bow top twice - once, obviously, in the last outfit, but also in the previous outfit (the suit). In the picture where the jacket is open, it looks to me like the top part of the bow, with the flaps of the bow under the lapels of the jacket.
Yes/No/Maybe/Why?
"The Bow That Ate Shelly O"
LMAO!!!!
I loved everything else, particularly that Alaia jacket.
The little cropped cardi was adorable, too.
Carol, can you imagine Paula & Donna having a conversation?
Surveillance cameras @ the ready!
I have noticed that the full skirts tend to make her look very short waisted. The black number here seems to be a bit longer in the torso so it doesn't look as bad. Even the cardigan looks decent with it.
But that belt high up under the girls is just a big HELL NO!!!! Again it makes her look short waisted & preggers. If she is trying to still those rumors, this isn't the outfit to do it.
I think she will get better as the comments filter in.
SisterZip
I love all the Azzedine Alaia pieces, he's one of my favorite designers. I HATE the Moschino shirt. It is HIDEOUS.
With that last outfit she looks like she was modeling maternity wear.
Yep, the bow was a head-scratcher.
The most that can be said about it is that she always looks very crisp and attractive in black and white, and this appears to have been an attempt to stretch that envelope.
I liked that she was attempting to be stylish without being pretentious in her wardrobe choices. It's also as if she knows that folks will rush out and buy what she wears, and she's trying to keep the financial impact of that phenomenon to a reasonable level. And people do! I chanced to be in New York City last week and popped into J. Crew for a look-see. Now, generally, a 57-year old wouldn't shop there for work wear, but the place was positively jammed with 40's, 50's, 60's and older women hunting for fashionable goods. They were buying like crazy! There was even a elderly 80-ish lady hopping right into the fray to get a lovely outfit. Gotta tell ya, my teeth nearly fell all over the floor.
The Divine Ms. M. is definitely re-defining how we choose our wardrobes.
Huffingtonpost.com has an interesting poll on ten of her outfits from the European trip.
So do we know who makes the cropped cardi? I know I'm in the minority here but I love me some cardis and I'd like to fantasize about getting that tiny black one.
Suz
I love the Azzedine Alaia, and I like the little cardigan too, the pantsuite was ok - but the bow....God. All I could think of was "I can't wait to see what Tlo makes of this train wreck." As usual, you did not disappoint!
Her come da judge! That bow makes Michelle look like a character in Rumpole of the Bailey. (Phillida, our Portia of the chambers?) And yet... somehow it works for Prague.
She looks charming in that Azzedine Alaïa. It was politically brilliant to wear a Paris designer in France. Bonus points that it's a designer most Americans haven't hear of. If she'd worn Chanel or Dior or YSL or etc, the nutty nutz back home would've really harshed my vibe.
Was anyone else inordinately disappointed that she's bugged out on the last leg of the trip?
PS -- I hope she considers doing fittings with the designers.
PPS -- Oscar, Oscar, Oscar.
Oh Lord, you guys ROCK! As usual, you are spot on!
I think what Donna Karan is saying is... there is more to Shelly O than her fashion and wouldn't it be great to get to know her. To which I say - Hell to the yes!
from desertwind:
"Was anyone else inordinately disappointed that she's bugged out on the last leg of the trip?"
No. I got the impression that there might be personal safety issues for that part of the trip.
potty mouth princess
OMG, that bow is reminiscent of the Elisabitch Hasselbeck "fashion" line. Run, Shelly. Run for your life!!!!! That looked like maternity wear. I Love Lucy maternity wear.
Meh on most of it. She's amazingly short-waisted for a woman who is nearly 6 feet tall (because she has a 40" inseam to make up for it), and the double breasted jacket accetunated that.
Loved Bruni's lavender coat and just bought a purse in that shade of purple. Bruni got her this time.
My mommy would kill for that fabulous purple coat Ms. Bruni-Sarkozy is wearing... and the purple bag doesn't hurt either. That woman is one fierce bitch! I wouldn't get too close for that kiss if I was Michelle.
Cropped cardigans at Ann Taylor--all kinds of colors.
I thought the cropped cardigan was a bit too casual with the dress.
BTW does anyone know what the daytime temps were during her trip to Europe? I have been puzzled by all the sleeveless choices she has made--the most puzzling was the sleeveless picnic frock she wore to the reopening of Ford's Theatre (during the winter).
honesty.not.pc
I adore Shelley O. There is just something about her that makes me smile, she makes me proud too!
I am not as picky as you guys about what she wears but WOAH NELLY that bow thing is frigging horrible. It looks like she was trying to giftwrap herself like a Christmas Lexus.
When I see pictures of her and Barack together I start to feel a little more confident about our country. I know that probably seems lame.
I hate everything; and put the Azzedine Alaia belt away or give it to charity.
Yep it's The Bow That Everyone Won't Stop Talking About-- maternity wear.
I liked or loved everything else and the cropped cardi too.
LOVED Carla's coat, who made that? And can we get it in the States?
I don't know...not loving these. Azzedine Alaia has much better stuff.
The bow white blouse number is horrendous!!!
from desertwind:
"Was anyone else inordinately disappointed that she's bugged out on the last leg of the trip?"
AHA! Today, the answer becomes clear. President Obama did a "surprise" visit to Iraq today, landing amidst a car bombing and various attacks. Clearly, this was intended to be a surprise to the world but was a plot hatched in advance. Putting two parents of young kids at personal risk was undoubtedly judged as unwise. Not surprising that she bugged out.
We should have seen it coming. Political maneuvering (Bush & co) kept candidate Obama from visiting the troops in Germany during his last European trip, and President Obama was no doubt keen to make a personal visit to demonstrate his commitment to the safety and well-being of our troops. I'm thrilled that he cared enough to do it at the end of what must have been a totally exhausting trip.
