Korto Momolu and Mocha

Hey, Kittens! Let's check in and see what's happening with our favorite pouty designer!

Mocha poses with Korto Momolu at a discussion of "This Child Will Be Great: Memoir Of A Remarkable Life by Africa's First Woman President" at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington, DC.

They're both wearing pieces from the Korto Momolu fall 2009 collection:

Models: Tocarra, Stacy McKenzie

And they both look fabulous. Although Mocha should have worn it with a belt, the way it was styled for the runway show. Korto has a fabulous sense for color and print and it's been said many times before, but it bears repeating: girl knows how to dress those many women whose sizes cannot be rendered in single digits.

To be honest though, I actually really like the way Mocha is wearing the outfit, without the belt. It's more understated, sure, but I think it looks better that way.

i don't care for the way the top has been pinned, takes away from the hi-end look of the dress.

I disagree about the green dress...it doesn't do much for her body type. It also looks like any stretch dress from Lane Bryant.

Korto looks good but the designs in these two photos don't especially look expensive.

They look fabulous!

Not every dress has to look expensive. Beauty has nothing to do with price tag.

They look great! Korto is so talented. I love the vibrant colors for fall.

I agree that the dress on Mocha looks better with the belt. I also want Korto to dress me.

Mocha looks gorge!

I like the green dress better with the belt. I also don't like how it's pinned at the neckline. Looks better on the model, with the belt & the wider neckline.

But Mocha probably didn't want everything on display....since it was a serious event.

I love the color of the dress. It's nice to see some color for fall. But not neon! I don't think I'll be into the neon trend, but I do like all the shades of lime & acid green.

Korto looks great! Glad she's doing well.

All I'm saying is that the clothes don't look high-end. I personally believe that Korto would have a better chance of success designing plus-sizes clothes for department stores than really making it as a high-end, Neiman Marcus/Barney's-esque designer. The use of prints is trademark Korto but the designs themselves are very basic over-size-10 fare. Am I skinny? No. Would I wear Korto's designs? Absolutely.

I like how Mocha looks (whoever the heck she is): hair, makeup, smile... everything. Part of me thinks that she should have worn a higher impact Korto necklace, but with her "assets," that may have been too much.

Korto needs to cut her hair, it is way too shaggy and at times it makes her face look greasy, presumably a by product of being under hot lights. Keeping the fro is fine, just trim it back a few inches. I remember how gaw-juss(!!) she looked when Tim came to visit and she had her hair wrapped up in a scarf, she has such a great face... yet another reason to cut her hair - to showcase her face.

Korto looks good in her Korto. I think a monochrome necklace would have worked better. I don't play the "she needs some gays" card often, if at all, but Korto needs some gays... seriously... really, really seriously... and I will leave it at that... except to say, TLo please help her. I hope this doesn't sound mean.

"A", Korto HAS a gay, but it's no way Jerrell should be a stylist.

Also I don't agree with Korto cutting her hair. She should keep it, but she should have it braided sometimes.

The fabulous Toccarra, ROCKS that dress!

W/o the belt and on Mocha, it looks like Angel said: 'Any stretch dress from Lane Bryant'.

potty mouth princess

Agree with Hutchlover. The dress needs the belt, but Mocha may not have the small waist Toccara has to pull it off.

Toccara is looking (and doing) great these days. Take THAT, Tyra!

I wish I was tall enough, or busty enough, to be able to wear Korto's stuff.

the first lulu

Korto looks fabulous. I love the dress and the necklace together. Her hair is a bit wild here, but still works for her. It would be fun to see how she looks in braids, or another style.

Don't know who Mocha is either, but the color is wonderful on her. Didn't notice the pinning at the top til it was pointed out. I think the belt would have looked great on her also, but it's possible it didn't fit her waist. She has a lovely figure and face. I've shopped at LB, and this dress is much better designed and proportioned than any of their stuff. It's deceptively simple, but does a full-figured woman justice.

That's my gal!

I cannot believe I was arguing with a delusional Jeffrey fan last week who said that Korto didn't know how to design for women who weren't exactly a size 0.

Love both dresses, but especially love the printed one.

Where is she selling her clothing?

I REALLY would love to get a hold of that printed dress!

With all due respect, a: I think Korto is doing okay by herself from the styling aspect. She really was one of the best at styling her models, and really one of the best ever featured on PR.

I question the green dress - it desperately needs the right bra, and the material isn't forgiving to the unevenness of a larger body than the model had.

While I adore the dress Korto is wearing, it also looked better on a more willowy model. Huge busy prints may not be the best thing for a shorter, slightly rounder woman.

Aside from the criticism that the dresses didn't really flatter the particular wearers, they were wonderful dresses. I admire her work hugely.

I'd love to see Michelle Obama wear Korto!

Fabulous idea!

I wish Mocha did not pin the top of the dress.

They both look wonderful!

The love both of those dresses!

Ah, the dreaded pinned neckline. I feel her pain, since I have never in my life worked anywhere that the fashionably low-cut blouse or dress was appropriate. Scarves, brooches, extra-added-faux buttons. Rare that anything really works if the dress was cut to show the girls.

Is it wrong of me to feel just a tiny bit of happiness that someone photographed at an event, in designer-ware, (even if it's not haute) struggles with the same issue?

Korto is fabulous, i love what she's wearing. The fabric is gorgeous.

Korto looks good in her dress, but the green dress wasn't a very good choice for Mocha. Maybe it would have looked better if she had worn the right bra with it but I'm not sure it would have helped all the issues. The material is very unforgiving.

Any full-busted woman can tell you- sometimes pinning is necessary!
But I wish Korto could have coughed up a fabulous necklace or collar to cover that up. Or even modified it with a cami underneath, which could also be beaded.
I still think both gals look great!

zora and Sara made excellent points...

Mocha would have done better with a better bra, and yes, pinning is VERY necessary when you're a healthy girl like her. Believe me, I know!

:0)

I think they both look great, especially Korto. The bold necklace and bold print of her gown work well together.
I would have liked to see a bold necklace on Mocha as well. The multi strand turquoise that the runway model has on is great with the dress.

They both look fabulous (although I agree about the pin). I love the necklace Korto is wearing. She needs to start selling her jewelry NOW.

To pin or not to pin....

If you are weaing a designer dress/top I'd think that you shoulkd go to the trouble and have the seams adjusted at the shoulder. AT A MINIMUM try to pin between layers of the fabric to make it less noticable or some sort of a necklace (or cami)..
As a DD I KNOW!

oh and I agree about the belt maybe not being an option. Tocarra has a very unusual shape. Most larger woman do not have as relatively small waist (in relation to the girls). And putting a large wide belt around a fuller ribcage, is often not flattering.

Korto, you are fabulous! I love your designs!!

True, the outfits do not look expensive.

i crave both those dresses. mocha just needed a better bra (and agree, cami would have been better than pins). jeez, people, if you think either dress looks like lane bryant, you haven't been to lane bryant lately. ok, the green one maybe looks like it could be igigi -- feel free to google igigi -- but the print one, fuggedaboudit, no other plus retailer is doing awesome giant bold prints like that. tragically, too many people still believe reductive rules about "what larger women can wear." (to some those rules mean no big prints, to others they mean no ditsy teeny prints. contradiction much?) even commenters here make those kind of pronouncements. and that's just sad -- i think with styling and fierceness a plus-size girl can rock anything. you DO need body confidence to do justice to one of korto's prints, whatever size you are.

bitchybitchybitchy

Agree- I loved how Korto styled her runway collection for the finale.

It's so refreshing to see a designer who celebrates women with curves.

Korto and Mocha look fab. Who cares if it doesn't look expensive. I'm sure we wouldn't say that if we thought the designer was Dian Von Furstenburg. As an African American woman I must say Korto's hair looks fabulous. I'm not sure if it's all hers, but regardless it's a great look and is inspiring for all of us wanting to rock our natural tresses.

All these comments about it looking "wild" or her needing a haircut are misguided. Clearly folks don't know about ethnic hair. In fact it's a little insulting to read. The style Korto is sporting is meant to be large. It looks absolutely fabulous.

I agree that Korto looks fantastic, but I'm having a problem with the top of Mocha's dress.

Seriously, whether you have a big chest or not...if you're going to wear something THAT low cut, you either let it be and own it or you put a cami or something underneath. I would say if you really can't commit to showing that much boobage, you're better off just picking a different dress.

What you can't do is stick a pin in it to make it less revealing and think it will be ok.

Everybody can tell. It looks like something my mother would have done to me at the last minute, while insisting, "oh, nobody will notice". YES they will and you can bet your ass that they will be talking about it. Just like we are right now. :)

As a woman whose size cannot be rendered in single digits, I can tell you Korto gets it. Her clothes are beautiful and flattering. Love her!
