Christian Siriano Wedding Gowns

Brides.com asked Christian Siriano to sketch wedding gowns for some engaged celebrities and there are NO puffy sleeves!

We've got little to say about these because critiquing sketches is getting a little ahead of things. Give us an honest-to-god dress and we'll rip the hell out of it, but for now, let's all just take a look.

Okay, we'll say one thing: they're pretty, but surprisingly basic. We would have thought Princess would turn out something a little edgier than these looks.

Uma Thurman
"I imagine this gown to be total elegance with a classically shaped top and a satin faced organza extreme bottom."

Rachel Bilson
"She is so sweet and chic. The shape is body conscious to show that she has a great figure."

Amy Adams
"A true red carpet diva. This gown is satin-faced organza and a overlay of chiffon in a icy grey tone."

Zooey Deschanel
"I love the idea of using colors and tones to highlight something for Zooey. Her hair has such a luscious dark tone."

You said it, pretty but basic. I too expected something more groundbreaking from him. Although, the lack of puffy sleeves is a plus.

Those first three could all be the exact same dress for all I can tell.

But these are wedding gowns for celebrities. Celebrities rarely go edgy for their weddings. And most of the people on the street don't want edgy wedding dresses. It remains one very conventional genre of clothing.

I think it's impressive that Chritian was able to create such beautiful and specialized gowns for each woman.

I like the one he designed for Amy Adams. I bet she'd look gorgeous in it.

Huh. I sort of expected a gown with some huge shoulders/sleeves-- a la the gown Jennifer Connelly wore in Labyrinth. When I was 9, I wanted that to be my future wedding gown.

The two gowns pictured ,that he made for actual cleints, are more interesting than these sketches.
Since it was an exercise, not a real order you would think he would have been a little more creative and original. That being said they are all pretty gowns that look like the same person designed them, and that an actual person could really wear.

Is it me, or is that really the same dress, on the same girl with different hair color?

Obviously it isn't the same dress. I think they're simple but very elegant.

Go PPS! Glad he's out there working his little ass off.

CanIGetYouAnything?

Is it safe to say that Christian Siriano is the most successful Project Runway designer?

The dresses are pretty, but the hair looks more interesting in these sketches.

I liked the first one, but I'm not sure if it's because it's a nicer sketch.

Love them!

I really like all of them, and I'm not usually liking much of what Christian does. Will be interesting to see what the sketches translate into.
The sketches all look wonderfully romantic and classic. I like that in a wedding gown!!!

OMG!!! I love Christian and all his fierceness.

His work is so stunning and unique and I love it! Congrats, Christian!!

Mariana (The Unoriginal)

I wish the Project Runway designers did wedding gowns again. That's such an interesting challenge. I still remember Kara Saun's gown for Jenny. It was gorgeous, Jenny even cried when she tried it on.

Fabulous! Fierce! Love him!

His sketches are beautiful.

Aw, I can't enough of Christian, he's such a great designer.

I like the one sketched for Zooey D. best. If the sweeping drape over the hip and down around the legs is consistent with walking and not only achievable when posed, then I say that dress is genius. And I think the lack of "edginess" is a plus - every bride (who's spending formal gown money, anyway) wants a beautiful dress, but I don't think anyone intentionally plans for the gown to upstage the bride.

Here's a wedding gown designed by Christian Siriano. The bride looks amazing, I think.

OH MY GOD That is GORGEOUS!!!!!

I like the one for Zooey Deschanel. But, of course, as you boys said, it's a sketch.

WOW, I could not agree more!! I just may become a big fan of Christian!! That gown is magnificent!!!!

Not impressed. Very ordinary. (Though I agree that it's always a bit premature to critique sketches.)

But that big ruffly-skirted one in the photos makes the bride look fat!

This guy is so overrated.

The sketches in themselves are really pretty, but i definitly agree that there isn't anything very edgy or new about them (maybe they would have more oomph in actual dress form. And I think that Zooey would definitly wear something edgier or something pure vintage.

Wedding dresses are all about the fabric and detailing.

Agree with TLo that a sketch is basically nothing and you must see the real dress on the real person or great model to start totally ripping the garment to shreds. What looks great on TampaBay may look like shit on Sewing Siren or vice versa.

To really judge dress it needs to be on a great iconic model who can wear anything such as Lauren Hutton, Dorien Leigh, Patti Hanson, Carmen, Naomi or "insert your faorite model's name".

TampaBay

Uma Thurman
"I imagine this gown to be total elegance with a classically shaped top and a satin faced organza extreme bottom."

Is Uma Thurman going to marry Elle MacPherson's ex-live in or did they break-up?

She does look lovely. Christian did well by her.

But the gown's not to my taste. Gratuitously ruffly frou-frou.

OMG! I'VE NEVER SEEN A WEDDING GOWN BEFORE!@#@#!@#

Nothing you can't find at David's Bridal. Um...yeah.

I strongly disagree that the bridal dress in the pictures makes her look fat. Just looking at her face and her arms and you know that she isn't fat. The fullness of the bottom could potentially make other women look a bit heavier (but why is looking a tad fuller always so bad anyway), bu this woman is too skinny to be ever confused as fat.

She looks radiant and most importantly happy. If she didn't like the dress she wouldn't have worn it.

I think Christian used his signature ruffles to great effect here. I bet that is what the bride wanted.

Oh for chrissake - a Wilma wedding dress? Really? Oy.

However Amy Adams would *rock* the dress he designed for her, and I really do like the Zooey howeverherlastnameisspelled.

sorry if most women don't truly want wedding dresses that are "edgy". would you prefer the hideous-on-the-boobs wing dress that carrie wore in sex and they city? hell to the no. christian is so fool and he is talented. love him!!

fashionablylate

I agree with TampaBay, wedding dresses are all about the fabric and detailing - a sketch just doesn't do them justice. That being said, I think the sketches are lovely and the real dresses he designed are fabulous. I also agree, he is most definitely the most successful PR designer and he deserves it, he's supremely talented and obviously has worked very hard to get where he is. Forget the haters Christian, you will always be the FIERCEST!

Bettie thank you so much for sharing the link of that bride with us.

She looks stunning and that dress is to die for.

Hopefully, when his sketches come to life we will appreciate more his work.

I love Christian's designs and every dress he delivers onto the runway is well made.

P.S.: I love the sketches, specially the Amy Adams gown.

Love Christian, I'm so happy for him. Glad he's doing well, he's so talented.

Christian designed the costumes for Uma Thurman's new movie. I can't wait to see them.

Gorgeous pictures and dress. Thank you for the link, Bettie.

Yup. The movie is called "Eloise in Paris". It's based on a children's novel.

They're attractive designs. But can Christian ever restrain himself to keep the execution as regally simple as the sketch?

I like the style of his sketches, although in some spots, his lack of attention shows and it makes for a very weirdly shaped model (i.e. Amy Adams). Maybe it's because I learned to draw before fashion school, but problems with the models make for iffy sketches sometimes. I see a lot of students who draw calves like crazy straws and it drives me crazy. I guess I'm a bit of a stickler--if the garment is to be pretty, the model it's drawn onto must be pretty first.

And I like the gowns, yes.

Our princess can sketch like nobody's business. F the dresses, I'd like to own one of the drawings.

Suzanne

I agree that they are traditional for Christian, but I really like them. Not amazingly edgy, but they are very pretty/

well,
i can see where he could have changed the names of the celebs and just name the styles. We would have.
Fierce,
