Leanne Marshall Fall 2009 Collection

Darlings, did you think we forgot about Leanne's show last week? We kept putting off the post because we wanted to do it right, that's all.

We were happy to see that she didn't just replicate her previous collection. This one showed real growth and movement away from previous work and that's not always easy to do. We liked her darker color scheme and the architectural details. It wasn't as noodle-y as previous work, but there were enough folds and pleats to make it totally Leanne.

She told us she designed and created the entire collection in 3 weeks and she was inspired by the NYC skyline. As inspiration goes, it's been done but we have to commend her for doing it in a subtle, impressionistic way. You don't look at it and think NYC skyline, but when you think NYC skyline and look at it, you can see it. Does that make sense?

We love the coat and the gowns and some of the simpler short dresses. We're not a hundred percent on that gold fabric, which looks a little heavy. We do love the purple and black, though.

Of course the place was chock full of PR alums, like Suede, Stella, Kit Pistol, Steven Rosengard, Jerrell, Korto, Jack, and Kevin Christiana, and standing around looking fabulous in the frocks were former PR models, Amanda, Nicole, and Karalyn.

Love love love love love love that last purple dress. I WANT IT!!!!

Ooooohhhh I love that coat/dress thing!!! Leanne is just amazing. 3 weeks? Geez, woman! And the purple is fantastic.

Kind of disappointed. But wish her well.

Must. Have. Coat.

Not liking Leanne's designs at all...nor the grey and gold fabrics!

Models look tired and their hairstyles are a mess...shiny face on one in purple could stand a bit of powder.

I'm disappointed in what I've seen so far...

Love the coat and the black dress on Amanda.

The front flap on the front dress that Karalyn is wearing looks like she's whipping one out to take a piss.

and BTW LOVED Kit's get up. That's how retro is done, KENLEEEEE!

I want.

The.

Grey.

Coat.

I have never in my life uttered a primal groan over fashion and shouted out loud, "I WANT THAT COAT" until now.

I like the coat, but honestly...I don't want to be a bitch, but I think one can tell she designed this in only three weeks.

Is it just me, or does that long purple gown look like its got a urinal on the front? A straight guy's fantasy bathroom accessory?

Other than that, the collection looks beautiful.

First post! woohoo!

danielc56 :)

It was indeed a pleasure to attend this event. I, too, hold reservations over the gold fabric, but I thought all the cuts were at least good, and some quite great. That coat, as noted, is a true winner.

danielc56,
you are not the only one. the moment I saw that purple long dress I thought about a urinal also... how unfortunate, because saving that, it is a beautiful dress... just the wrong pleat in the wrong place....

the rest is pretty, it's nice to see she is trying new colors, the purple is great....

I love the gold/black skirt on the 1st page, the coat, and the dress she is wearing (as well as the one she wore on the Jay Leno show). The two little sheath's have some interesting details (like dart placement) that I think buyers might find appealing. I hope she gets lots of sales and makes a go of it.

"You don't look at it and think NYC skyline, but when you think NYC skyline and look at it, you can see it. Does that make sense?"

Yes! In that first purple skirt, for sure. Other than that, I think the collection shows growth in some cases but not in others. Some pieces look a little, I don't know. . . home sewn?

I'd like to see her do well. TLo, how did the crowd react? Could you get a sense of the response, esp. among industry folk?

Taking a second look, I think Leanne will have to figure out who her customer is. Or she'll have two separate lines because there's a real split personality here.

--There are the sophisticated, high fashion pieces, like the two short purple dresses & the floor-length gowns.

-There are the "I own a little funky store in Portland and make everything myself" pieces, as in all the gold stuff, the gray coat, the dress she's wearing.

I thought "morning schlong" when I saw the purple dress. But the gray coat rocks it, fer sure.

WOW!! She is definitely a force to be reckoned with! What talent!

xoxoxox

Did she have any support from Bravo or the Project Runway judges?
Or do they only love Christian?

I have to agree with everyone here in saying

I WANT THAT GRAY COAT!!!!

What the hell is Jerrell wearing? It looks like an Adidas hoodie cut up and added to kitchen towels... For real; it's fugly.

The coat is fabulous, the rest of the collection is rather disappointing. And you're spot on about the gold fabric, it's too heavy. Plus it doesn't work with grey.

I think she probably shouldn't have publicly stated she made the collection in three weeks if she wants to be taken seriously as a fashion businesswoman.

That said, the pieces are nice, particularly the purple and grey outfits. The purple skirt is the only piece I saw that seemed inspired from the NY skyline.

Also, she just moved from Portland when she made this collection, so it doesn't seem likely that she fully got the chance to take in her inspiration.

She obviously has talent, but I am disappointed in this rush job. The pieces are pretty, but I think her last collection was superior.

I wanted to follow up my last post to say that she clearly has an eye for fashion. The pieces are visually interesting, and look like real fashion. She had probably been working on the designs for a while, but didn't construct until recently.

But because she rushed her collection, her work lacks that extra level of polish, or those wonderful details we'd expect from a fashion week collection.

In that sense, I think this collection doesn't live up to her PR collection. That's why I'm disappointed as I expected her work to get better, and it seems like she just moved sideways rather than forward.

I look forward to seeing your comments about Siriano's collection. I found that collection to be more interesting, even if some of the pieces were questionable.

Why did she have so little time? Shouldn't her second collection have been the most important thing going on in her life?

I love her stuff, so I do like this, but it could have done with an extra few weeks to polish it up and get the details and fit spot on.

Having said which, if I were tall, flat-chested, skinny and nominated for an Oscar (sadly I score a massive 0 out of 4), I would get Leanne to design my gown...

Oh and if were Shelley O (which I'm not either) I would be in quick as a bunny to grab that coat.

I am wondering... is this still an eco-friendly line?

Meh.

anon 1:38,

Yes, I forget the fabrics used, but I did read an interview that her fabrics are all eco-friendly.

Wow, I am REALLY not a fan of the gold fabric AT ALL but everything else is gorgeous, especially the purple number you so wisely picked as the first thing to show us. WOW.

But the gold fabric.. eewww.

I'm not crazy about the designs or the color scheme, but I'll join in on the gray coat love. Gorgeous!

Love the purple number! Not so crazy about pairing that gold with that heather grey.

I adore the purple skirt on the lead in page, the purple gown, and the grey coat. But the black and gold material? I think I bought a mini-dress made out of it from Charlotte Russe when I was in high school. When I see it I think - 2002, cheap mall dress, party at the lake. In other words, it lacks polish.

And I still think breeder boy is hot.

I love love LOVE the skirt on the 4th look. it's absolutely fantastic, colors are gorgeous, just perfect.

The coat is wonderful. Beyond that (and it pains me) don't love much of it.

The long purple formal looks like it has a bag for gathering cotton incorporated into the design. Yikes!

Where was her show? It looks like it took place in a hotel corridor.

I like many of the pieces (gray coat, short purple dress, even some of the goldish things if they were made in a different fabric) but it does look rushed. Fun to see Amanda in whatever she wears.

I loved this collection (And I think it actually looked better in person), my favorite being the purple dress on the end. LOVE it. That is my color.

I was also impressed with how she incorporated her look & style into very wearable clothes that working women will buy.

If this collection shows up somewhere, like Bloomingdales (or some other upscale department store), it will SELL OUT. I hope I see her on the racks next fall.

"twc said: Where was her show? It looks like it took place in a hotel corridor."

It was at a gallery space in west Chelsea. A much better way to see the detailing, I think, than when everything goes breezing by you on the runway.

Sorry to say, 'cause I love Leanne, but don't love this collection. Looks a bit like everything else she's done. Except for the gray coat--lovely.

other than that the first cute purple dress with the awesomely textured skirt and the adorable grey coat, this is a big MEH for me.

pee. ess. EMMETT!!!!!!!!

Overall, I like Leanne's asthetic. She shows some stellar examples of workmanship and detailing. However, when she gets it's wrong, it's really wrong. I think some of the looks are overworked, and some of the overall looks would work more as separates. The grey blouse is adorable, but it's totally mismatched with the gold/black skirt.

Come on, don't be ridiculous. No woman would let someone pee into her skirt. That is a bag to put cotton into as you pick it out in the fields. Jeeez.

I really can't write what I thought of that thing on the front of the purple gown.

Like the grey coat and the short purple/black dress. Otherwise, sorry. I do not like that bronze-y fabric.

Better luck next time, Leanne.

Suede looks like a dumba**!! Has everyone ever told him that before??....God, get with it moron!! You don't always have to have dumb stupid color in your hair, retard!

I AGREE SO MUCH that I needed to write that in caps. Need. That coat is amazing.

That last purple dress is amazing, also. Love her and her work, and I really hope she does well for herself.

Yeah, what most everyone has said. I like the short dresses to varying degrees, really like the coat, would like the long dresses if the fold(?) folded instead of forming an odd little receptacle/pouch.

Not a fan of the bronze/gold pieces, either, what most bothers me is all the edges & corners that are soft, as if someone forgot to press the seams & finished work. I don't know if that is due to the weight of the fabric or is an essential part of the design (well, I guess that's the same thing, really).

I too wish I had a better look at Jerrell's jacket/dickey/collar thingamabob, but unlike Ms. Marriott, I *think* I might like it if I saw it properly. Could be mistaken, but that's the entertainment value of Jerrell's sense of style. Sometimes an initial "what the f-!" turns into a kinda like.

Oh, and TLo - thanks for all this largesse. Don't know how you manage to maintain a home, relationship and make a living while blogging so assiduously, but I'm grateful!

what's taking you so long to do christians!?

Ditto!

I think the gold is deelish! I covet that gold dress! I'm more in love with what she design for PR(the noodles were my fave), but I think this collection is nice enough.

"anon said: You don't always have to have dumb stupid color in your hair, retard!"

Use of the word 'retard', as a pejorative (or anything else), is rather ignorant.

--GothamTomato

Careful observers will note PRG's own Alex! in the "event.jpg" photo. It's from afar, but he can still be made out for those of you wishing to get another glimpse of cuteness.

I love the designs, but those models look like the need a nap!

Uncareful observers will not note that Alex! showed up ALL OVER that other photo thread. And all up close'n'shit. Sorry for my above comment...

Gotham said, "Use of the word 'retard', as a pejorative (or anything else), is rather ignorant."

Gotham, you might need to say that in another way. I think "pejorative" is an awfully big word for a 2nd grader to understand.

Oy...I hate to say it, but I don't like it. It's bad, and it looks like it was all made in 3 weeks. (Why the rush? Real life isn't a Project Runway challenge.) I also now know why she didn't use much color on the show - she's not good at it. (Though I didn't dislike the gold fabric you thought was too heavy.)

It was just okay.

Is that model on the front page that Marla's model from S2? :/

WOW I really hate all of this!!! And usually I'm such a fan!!!

I want that coat ALmost as much as I wanted Jillians. Almost. and I love the texture/color gradations on the little purple one, although I don't care for the way the bodice attaches...or is it a blouse? Either way, meh. But the purple gown is awfully prom/bridesmaid. Truth be told, I don't like satin, but that color, very shiny, looks David's Bridal.

I believe she had a short time since she moved from Portland to New York and all of the supplies and stuff were yet to be shipped to the new living space. I think she details that over at her blog, anyway..

I LOVE it. Leanne is amazing.

potty mouth princess

Some good, some not so good.

Amanda ROCKED her frock. GORGE!!!!

And in closing....STELLA!!!!!!!!!!!!

THE GREY COAT/CLOAK/DRESS! Oh my stars i want it!

not too crazy about the other stuff, although I see the NYC skyline (and what you said is right on; knowing the inspiration you can totally see it in the garments). But I never did love Leanne's stuff as much as I should have; I can see that she's super-talented, but it's not my taste. except for that grey cloak. oh! that grey cloak!

I dunno what you ladies are smoking, but DAMN I thought this collection was beautiful! Although ever since hearing that urinal reference, I can't stop seeing one every time I look at the long purple gown. And the coat! Is gorgeous!

I really the look of things. Leanne's clothes are really, I guess, wear friendly, so I think they would be much more fabulous in person. Her PR finale had a real movement to it, and I would have loved to see if these clothes had the same energy.

I don't hate the gold, LOVE the purple. So jealous of those who got to see it in person.

That purple and black skirt is mega intriguing. I <3 Leanne.

these clothes are bulky and unrefined.

I wished Amanda would have coached the other models on the correct posture and expression.

Love the coat.

Love the top of the dress Amanda is wearing, the skirt is a little off.

The purple and black sheaths are good.

The rest need to go through another round or two of editing.

COMPLETELY OFF TOPIC, SORRY...

We gotta get a call on the Shelley O dress, TLo! LOL!

Pretty color, but the boobies...

And her hair and makeup are fabu.

adding...

from the Congress Address, not the ball last night.

Honestly...I'm kind of disappointed. There are a few great pieces, like the fabulous purple dress and the amazing coat, but the rest don't look so great.

Fashionablylate

Nope.

Love the gray coat and I want the purple dress to go under it!

I like the colors she chose. Except the gold.

Poor Leanne -- she is apparently the latest casualty of the Weinstein v. the World fight. Does anyone think she'd be fighting for space in NYC this season if PR had been keeping the appetites of the wannabes (ahem) whetted for the past few months? I think she's getting screwed here, and it's sad.

Bed head fashion -- best dressed walk of shame.

Loved the coat the moment I saw it, and would also take the black dress if I had something Oscar-ish to go to. I can't believe you guys posted a photo where I'm front and center, interviewing Leanne for my website! (FashionTribes.com; chicsteals.blogspot.com)...I'm the lady with the short orange hair and the black pinstriped pants, with that huge black bag... If I'd known you guys were there at the same time, woulda said hi! Woulda, coulda shoulda. Leanne's such a sweetie, and so talented...I think she needs some better fabrics (and more time) to work with.

I love the purple skirt & the grey. Love Leann and so happy to see her beau there too!

Love the gray coat. The rest of it not so much.

What a disappointment! Even the short purple number on the front page has some fit issues. It looks too bulky, top and bottom. The hair and makeup are pretty gruesome. Hope she does better next time...

Does anyone else think this collection looks like unfinished as hell?

last night we had a project runway canada party. two of my friends were guest models on the show having their wedding dresses redesigned.

http://www.soeursdujour.com/

i love the gray coat, the black gown amanada wore and the short purple dress (not the one with the pixels for a skirt) but the rest is pretty, pretty hideous that is. sorry leanne. The rest looks for a lack of a better word, cheap. uninspiring, unluxurious, uninteresting.

That being said the gray coat is sublime.

all in all ill chalk it up to a misstep along an otherwise very promising career.

While there are some interesting pieces it looks a little like a fashion school show. Esp. the styling on the models and the rather unfinished looks. Love Leanne but this is rather awful.

blech

That gray coat is to DIE. Not so crazy about the gold fabric, but I love the purple and totally get what you mean about being able to see the skyline inspiration once you know that's what she was thinking.

I loved this when I first saw it, and now, with the exception of That One Coat, I'm liking it less and less.

Looks like Leanne went right back to the clothes she was designing before PR. Some are nice, some aren't all that nice. Only one or two that I really enjoyed.

Note to Leanne: You need more than three weeks to pull this off. This isn't PR and this isn't a final collection. This is your entre into the fashion world for real. TAKE YOUR TIME. I want you to succeed. I want you to blow Princess out of the water. But that ain't gonna happen in a mere three weeks.

i'm not dorothy gale

Purple dress yes.
The rest...no. Too much folding; it's not flattering.

where was this "show"?? the basement of a church?

well, it was a lovely collection...after jay, judynoodles is my favorite winner.

Hit and miss. But honestly it's a lot better than the collections Christian has turned out so far. Don't get me wrong. I've liked the after show work that most of the designers have put out and wish them the best and I know they have to, if they want to stay in business, cut deals with the devil, a.k.a Payless, etc. But give them a few more years and hopefully they'll hit their groove.

But the short purple dress and the gray coat... Definite winners.

P.S. It's a shame Jay never did much of anything after the show and what were those idiot judges thinking with Chloe Dowdy? That hefer just took the money and ran. I mean if she produced anything it was a t-shirt. Boooooo!

In response to the comments about hair and make-up...

I was at the show....Thise models stood on cudes for just over 2 hours....There was no touching up....With hindreds in the room, of course they got warm...
