Darlings, it was when one of the contestants uttered the above that we turned to each other with the realization that we just may love this show. You never hear that kind of thing on Project Runway. We're talking about RuPaul's Drag Race on Logo, darlings!
"Put your stiletto to the metal and let's take this mother from zero to fabulous in 3.5 seconds."
And why would you do that? You would do that because NOT ONLY is it a bitchy reality competition loaded with more gay than you've ever seen on your TV screen at once, NOT ONLY did it have some hysterically funny lines, which is to be expected when you get a bunch of drag queens together, NOT ONLY are there some potentially epic hot messes among the crowd (which is also to be expected when you get a bunch of drag queens together), darling's it's all THAT, PLUS, it's a nearly dead-on spoof of Project Runway and America's Next Top Model.
Come ON. LOOK at that workspace. Are you going to tell us that doesn't look a tiny bit familiar? All it needs is a bespectacled middle-aged gay man in a pinstripe suit to come in and tell everyone to make it work.
et voila.
Yes, Ru is playing both the Heidi and the Tim parts on this show and frankly, that's a little bit of genius. We guess that makes Santino the Nina. Oh, the irony.
And here's Ru in full-on Tyra mode and a pound and a half of vaseline on the lens. By the way, Ru is funnier here than she's been in years. She got in some truly laugh-out-loud lines.
The premise is pretty much the same as all reality TV competitions. Get a bunch of competitors together:
Put them through their paces (humiliation is a bonus):
And hope that the stress causes lots of hairpulling and screaming:
Add some hot, wet, semi-naked men:
And eye-candy in the form of photographer Mike Ruiz:
And girl, you got yourself some GAYGAYGAY entertainment.
For the ANTM portion of the program, the girls had an unexpected (and unexpectedly wet) photo shoot thrown at them.
And you do NOT get a drag queen wet without asking permission first, honeys.
It just isn't done.
After that, it was Project Runway time as the queens wiped off their makeup and got busy with their dress forms. Miss Ru explained the challenge in a way Tim Gunn never would: "To help you accessorize, we went to the Dollar Store and got you a whole bunch of crap," and then added a tagline that just might put "Make it work" to rest:
"Make me proud, and remember, don't fuck it up."
The results for the runway show (and you just knew there was going to be a runway show, didn't you?) ran from fabulous to tragic:
But best of all, kittens, best of ALL...
They forced the bottom two drag queens to duke it out in a lip-synching contest! You just don't get any gayer than that.
Actually, we're lying. The best parts were Ru's lines.
"I've consulted with the judges, my lawyers and my housekeeper, but the final decision is mine to make."
And the kissoff line that outdoes all the others, from "Auf Wiedersehen" to "See you later, decorator," to "Pack up your knives and go," NOTHING can top Ru's sendoff:
"Sashay, away. I hope you take this experience back home with you and continue to do what you do best and inspire the children."
Seriously, bitches. You need to be watching this. It's both a hellaciously fun reality competition while at the same time it's a dead-on satire of them.

Oh, dear lord, this looks fantastic! But I think I'd better wait until this evening to watch it. I have the teensiest suspicion that it might not be SFW!
2/4/09, 12:20 PM
Oh lordy, there goes my lunch hour...
2/4/09, 12:21 PM
No LOGO on my cable, but I got DRAG RACE on a season pass from iTunes yesterday. I haven't watched the first episode yet, but after this recap, I think I'll be watching it multiple times tonight.
2/4/09, 12:42 PM
I loved when Ru explained they needed to show:
C harisma
U niqueness
N erve, &
T alent.
I can't wait for episode 2!
2/4/09, 12:45 PM
OHMYGOD I'm so glad you guys are going to blog about it. I LOVED IT!!!!!
2/4/09, 12:47 PM
itunes season pass to be purchased as soon as i get home
2/4/09, 12:48 PM
Best show on television right now.
XOXOXOXO
2/4/09, 12:48 PM
THANK YOU for reviewing this!! The minute I heard "Bitch, I'm here! I took off work!" I prayed that you two would be blogging it.
2/4/09, 12:59 PM
Ohmygod, I have GOT to sit down with a martini and popcorn later and watch this!!!!
2/4/09, 1:06 PM
This just may be the highpoint of my life.
Hmmmm....
now that I see it in writing, it seems pretty sad...
2/4/09, 1:07 PM
OMG! OMG! OMG! I am sooo GAAAYYY. I watched this and thought it was HE-larious. LUVed it.
I read a review of it somewhere calling it low rent production values, but I think you hit the nail on the head when you said ANTM/Runway spoof.
Don't take it too seriously and it is great!!!
I tuned in to see Ru, cause on his Runway guest spot, he looked like SHIT. It was fun to see him all glammed up, doing his DIANA ROSS/TYRA/HEIDI/TIM Gunn imitations.
And he did have the best lines and delivery. And forget Santino, he dug up Bob Mackie as a guest host. Bob should definitely do a dress for her.
And getting those girls wet, without them knowing about it? The horror simply showed in some of those photos, but the best of the lot went with it, and looked fierce!
And then to get to see them out of drag ... did you see the guy with all those tats and those gorgeous eyes! OMG! And the guy with those bushy eyebrows! OMG!
I am so afraid it might lose it's charm, but I am so watching this train wreck until it jumps the tracks and takes me with it.
Probably has no mainstream cache (the article I read was asking if drag still has relevancy in this day and age?), but I'm buying tickets, sitting on the front row, and dishing with any other gals/guys who want to join the fun.
I'm buying an extra large martini shaker and some BIG bottles of vodka for the run of the show.
Just sayin-
2/4/09, 1:54 PM
"Inspire the children.'
THAT is the line that put me away completely.
I'm so glad you boys are blogging this show! It is too, too fabulous for words. It is also way past time that some one parodied these TV reality competitions.
Too many funny lines to count, but the funniest Or rather, most ironic) thing was that the queen eliminated looked the most like she was wearing something made by Santino.
The only thing that would have made this more perfect was if they had cast a Joan Crawford to go with/against the Bette Davis. That would have been too funny.

If there were ever a show to watch with a Fashion Puta in your hand, this one is it.
2/4/09, 2:17 PM
Wow. Bob FUCKING Mackie! How sweet was THAT!
But if Santino is the new Nina, are we to be blessed with Santino Screencaps? Maybe that's not such a good idea....
Even if this was a complete trainwreck (which it is most certainly NOT) the guys in the orange shorts totally made my day and I hope they stick around for the next epi!
"Make me proud, and don't f*ck it up!"

Marc,
I'm glad I'm not the only one who picked up on th "CUNT" scale.
Hee-larious.
"Don't f+ck it up."
2/4/09, 2:32 PM
Logo has been showing ads for this on their channel and website for ages, and I'm SO relieved that it's finally here! The only thing that makes the show even better is that you guys are covering it. :)
2/4/09, 2:46 PM
I'm so glad you're blogging about this show. It is *that* good.
2/4/09, 2:52 PM
Oh FINE. Another (un)guilty pleasure for me.
After reading all of the comments and screencaps, I am so totally in.
Thanks ever so much, boys.
2/4/09, 3:14 PM
I knew I could count on you guys...while no one I know is watching the show I know have a place to vent ( I was a Gay Asian man in my former life I know it)! Part Top Model, Part Project Runway = BEST SHOW EVER! Watch out Tyra and Heidi Rupaul is getting ready to WORK BITCHES!
2/4/09, 3:21 PM
I watched this earlier on Logo's website, and it was AMAZING. However, I was sad about who got sent home first.
2/4/09, 3:28 PM
Saw a recap for this on Jezebel today and enjoyed the C.U.N.T. scale (although many of theladies there didn't appreciate the humor in that). Sounds like a great way to while away a chilly night.
Logo is really starting to pick things up in terms of production. "Rick and Steve: The Happiest Gay Couple in All the World" is also hilarious.
2/4/09, 3:34 PM
I've got it on Series Recording on my DVR as of 5 minutes ago. What a hoot!
2/4/09, 4:46 PM
Quite delicious. The only sad part is that we have to lose one each week. Who wasn't rooting for the older guy, who looked WAY better as a gal.
Bravo! Err, I mean LOGO!
2/4/09, 4:55 PM
LOGO has many fabulous shows, too bad you didn't blog Sordid Lives the Series . . . or did you?
Also, there was a fantastic movie on the other night with the yummy guy from their travel show Bump! Charlie David, et al in A Four Letter Word.
2/4/09, 4:58 PM
"the guys in the orange shorts" Girl that was a thong...he has a great ass though! I though I wasn't going to like the girl that ended up looking like a fab Bette Davis on the Runway but he is Old School FIERCE!
2/4/09, 5:00 PM
My friend just told me about this last night. It is waiting for me on the DVR. I can't flipping wait!
2/4/09, 5:00 PM
sonofabitch. right after i cancelled cable, too. after the Drag Queen episode on PR this fall, I said: I wish there was a drag queen makeover show!
and behold. RuPaul has answered my prayers (there's a phrase you don't get to say every day).
please please - will the episodes be available online?
2/4/09, 5:11 PM
Slightly off-topic:
Did you guys see where Mad Men's costume designer, Janie Bryant, is launching a clothing line?
2/4/09, 6:06 PM
LOVE it.
This show is chock full of amazing one liners that I will be using for the rest of the week. In fact, I just changed my facebook status to note that I was going from 0 to fabulous in 3.5 seconds. I'm super glad you picked up on all the phenomenal one liners as well. :)
I simply cannot WAIT for more episodes. I know this first one was put online, but will the rest be available via the internet? Or do I need to purchase an iTunes pass? I hope I can get them fo free! I'm po.
2/4/09, 6:53 PM
I had no idea you could buy glue on breasts.
2/4/09, 10:24 PM
You can watch the episodes on rupaulsdragrace.com!
And RuPaul looks soooo much better than Tyra!
2/4/09, 10:25 PM
Hilarious. I freaking loved it. Pretty please blog this show for us.
2/5/09, 2:06 AM
And just when the PR legal battle was getting me down, the drag queens come to my rescue (again) and make my life worth living! Thank you for the heads up, I totally forgot this was supposed to start soon!

The girl in the ice green with chiffon sleeves? I think she looks like Tallulah Bankhead , specifically an Al Hirschfeld caricature of Tallulah.
2/5/09, 10:42 AM
I watched it last night, and my sides were hurting from laughing so hard. Even DH was sitting there with tears rolling down his cheeks from laughing. RuPaul as Sir Tim of the Gunn is priceless!
2/5/09, 11:17 AM
I don't get LOGO on my cable, but I think I'll be investing in this season on I-Tunes...
Your observations about this show are perfect! It is at once a really great reality show and a really great parody of a reality show. It's nothing short of genius.
2/5/09, 11:20 AM
Mostly I appreciate that RuPaul does not look like a crack baby the way he did on Project Runway.
2/5/09, 11:30 AM
TiVo season pass set and it is recording tonite! I can't wait!!!
2/5/09, 1:01 PM
oooh! I can't wait to go home and see this! Thank you faery godfathers for the delicious gifts you shower on your minions!
2/5/09, 2:37 PM
I think this may very well be the greatest show on television EVAH! I was watching it and my husband sat down and totally got sucked in too. We were laughing so hard we were crying. My fave of many:
Akasha: Part of a wholesome breakfast HEE!
2/5/09, 2:39 PM
Oh and the super intense key light had me ROLLING. How bright WAS that thing?
When is this on so I can see it as soon as possible? I caught it on a repeat on Logo the first time I saw it. This is subscription worthy television.
2/5/09, 2:54 PM
I saw it and I'm Hooked! It will replace my project runway void. Ms. Paul has the best lines! and I love her comments on each contestant's outfit as they begin to walk down the runway, It's what we all do at home!
And the sing off!!!! The best isea ever! I hope teddy bear Chris from project runway makes an appearance, and I want to see Charo!!!
2/5/09, 3:56 PM
When I got home last night, I plopped myself down in front of the computer to watch this, and I am in awe!
"Watch the hoses!" I nearly died laughing.
2/5/09, 11:17 PM
Oh, please, please reopen the TLo Lounge for this one. It'd be a shame to watch it alone.
2/6/09, 8:44 AM
All I can say is thank god for you, Tom and Lorenzo. And thank god for this show...it was amazing! Now get out there and inspire the children!
2/6/09, 10:29 AM
IT IS SO FLIPPIN' FUN!!!! I LOVE THIS SHOW!!!!
2/6/09, 12:41 PM
I cannot believe I knew nothing about this show. What would I do without my TLo??
You can bet I'll be watching this because darlings, there's nothing I love more than a drag queen!
SO excited!!
2/6/09, 1:32 PM
Thank you so much for blogging about this boys!
I can't see your links, but they show up nicely on Logo's website.
Hilarious! I can't wait for the next episode!
Bob Mackie's belly button comment was priceless!
2/6/09, 1:52 PM
Finally got to catch this. Fabulous! Ru's critiques are spot on. I did see the cameraderie in the girls that was refreshing to see after so much backstabbing in other shows.
2/6/09, 1:57 PM
OMG! I love this show on so many levels. There was one thing that made me howl that hasn't been mentioned in the comments yet. The prize for winning the first round besides the immunity for next week... 3 nights in Vegas with air travel provided by Southwest Airlines. SOUTHWEST AIRLINES?! Roundtrip to Vegas is like $120. ROUNDTRIP!
2/6/09, 4:52 PM
I just watched this show - and hoped to god you guys would have had SOMETHING to say about it. And lo and behold, you did.
This is my new guilty pleasure.
2/6/09, 5:32 PM
They actually showed it on VH1 too. Not sure what day they are planning to regularly show it, if they are, but I did see it and it is great!!!
2/6/09, 6:16 PM
I caught the rerun on Logo this afternoon, and I absolutely LOVE this show!!
As usual, TLo, your commentary is so spot-on, it is uncanny!!
Please blog it ala PR. Pretty Please!!!!
2/6/09, 8:27 PM
This show is my Bestie.
2/7/09, 11:21 PM
This is on VH1 right now!! It's hilarious!!!! Thanks for recommend guys! :-)
2/8/09, 12:40 AM
Finally..decent programming on LOGO. This show is too funny to believe. Even funny with the dumb commercial on Logo: Sham-WOW! and those stupid stick-up lights.
2/8/09, 10:19 PM
talk about the vaseline on the lens yet NOT comment on the obscene level of photoshopping on the press photos?
come on!
Shanel's legs alone!
Love the show though!
2/9/09, 2:05 AM
Does anybody know the names of the orange-shorts wearing, chocolate thunderstorm hunks?
2/9/09, 10:02 AM
I don't get Logo but another network picked this up. I say the first half Saturday night about 9pm CST.
It was fun and a great way to end a cappy day.
(TV Guide.com doesn't go back that far so I can't say which other channel picked it up. Sorry!)
2/9/09, 11:55 AM
Who needs PR when there's this!
OK, I do, but this f***er is hilarious!
& Bob Mackie?
TV GOLD!!!!
2/9/09, 1:59 PM
No time to read comments, but after I watched the Logo links on Saturday, VH-1 aired it that night at 11.
I'll go ahead and DVR it from now on.
HYSTERICAL!!!!!
2/9/09, 2:38 PM
I loved Ru's Drag Race and I'm so glad that you guys are reviewing it.
2/19/09, 10:28 AM
THANK YOU for introducing me to this show! I don't get Logo, but spend yesterday afternoon watching what you have posted here and it is FABULOUS. THANKYOU THANKYOU!
