Well, Korto and Malan (which sounds like a detective agency), got it right for their Spring 'o9 shows. We love both of these big clunky necklaces. Certainly, La Nina has a history of wearing them well. We're all for this trend, in theory. Unfortunately, we're in sharp disagreement about the following ones, all of which made recent runway appearances. So much so that Tom turned to Lorenzo upon viewing them and said "You're kidding, right?" According to Tom, most of what you're about to see ranges from ugly to ridiculous, but Lorenzo really likes them (most of them).
Like any accessory, it's all in how you wear it and how you pair it. As we said, we like clunky necklaces in theory. We just can't agree on these clunky necklaces. What say you, minions?

Anna Sui, Bottega Veneta

Burberry Prorsum, Chanel

Christian Dior, Christian Lacroix

Emilio Pucci, Giambattista Valli

Gucci, Lanvin

Louis Vuitton, Marc by Marc Jacobs

Marni, Michael Kors

Oscar de la Renta, Ralph Lauren

Roberto Cavalli, Stella McCartney

Vera Wang, Viktor & Rolf

Ugh! all of them are horrible!
1/28/09, 10:47 AM
ACK.
I reiterate:
ACK.
Tom, I'm wit'cha on this completely.
All the best,
NDC
1/28/09, 10:49 AM
Lorenzo, with you ALL THE WAY. I would enthusiastically wear a large number of those. Especially the one on the Giambattista Valli model. Gorge.
1/28/09, 10:58 AM
I'm with Tom on this one. I like the Kors and Cavalli, but that's about it.
1/28/09, 10:59 AM
I generally LOVE clunky necklaces, but the ones posted, for the most part, do not work for me. It's something to do with the shape, but I can't put my finger on it exactly.
1/28/09, 10:59 AM
These are mostly awful. Want to see some tasteful jewelry, look at the work of Gretchen Schields, who was featured in Ornament Magazine a few months ago. Actually, look at most of the artists in that magazine. Maybe they do it better because that's all they do. No affiliation, just longtime subscriber.
1/28/09, 11:00 AM
The Lacroix looks like an echidna... is she smuggling animals?
1/28/09, 11:00 AM
I am a jewelry addict and I am pretty bold about necklace choices. Most are ugly, but the ones I would wear NOW are the pink Burberry, the black Giambattista Valli, the blue Gucci (beautiful!! where can I buy this?) and the white Lanvin.
1/28/09, 11:01 AM
The Stella McCartney one looks like it belongs in a badly decorated bathroom somewhere.
1/28/09, 11:01 AM
The Stella McCartney one looks like something you'd have in your bathroom to hang your towels. Hideous!

OH MY GOD Sara, I swear I didn't see your comment LOLOLOLOL
1/28/09, 11:05 AM
I could have fun with the Bottega, the Valli and the Gucci. And I would put the rest in my recyclable bins.
Seriously, though, what does this trend mean psychologically? I know how the clothes often are either a reflection of the economy (like dark, austere now) or its polar opposite (light, whimsical). But this? I just don't get it.
1/28/09, 11:08 AM
Blech. I'm with Tom on this one, even though I think larger jewelery works better on women of size than on the uber-skinny models. In this case, I didn't see a thing I liked.
1/28/09, 11:08 AM
Fugly, mostly. The Lauren might be okay with the right outfit. I like chunky necklaces, but these are chunky messes.
1/28/09, 11:11 AM
Sui, Gucci, Kors, Lauren, and even the Lanvin, have some redeeming qualities. I can envision a look for each where they would add and not detract.
The rest of them are ridiculous and belong in the garbage bin. In a few years we will look back and talk about the odd clunky necklaces worn during this time. I look back at similar bad earrings and necklaces from the late 80's and early 90's. Just bad.
And a special call out to de la Renta.... Was he smoking crack or what? A jumble of ideas smashed together, like odds and ends from other projects. Tsk Tsk Tsk.
1/28/09, 11:14 AM
LOVE LOVE LOVE the Christian Lacroix one. It started in Spring 2008 and now they're back in full force for Spring 2009. I love them, with the right outfit of course, but I have to say that I don't like the bib-like ones.
1/28/09, 11:15 AM
I don't like them all, but I love most of them.
1/28/09, 11:18 AM
In theory the Bottega Veneta, the Lanvin and the Ralph Lauren are nice. I can see them on Marie Antoinette.
Otherwise, ick.
1/28/09, 11:20 AM
good grief. they are just to much. where korto & malan's just make sense.
1/28/09, 11:20 AM
Wrong, wrong, wrong...who wants a chandelier hanging from their neck?
1/28/09, 11:23 AM
Actually some of them are great looking, others not so much.
1/28/09, 11:24 AM
The one on Giambattista Valli's model is GORGEOUS. With a fabulous LBD. TO DIE FOR.
1/28/09, 11:24 AM
Burberry, Kors, Lacroix (without that weird anemone thingy that looks like it is sucking on her neck!), Valli, Gucci, Lavin, and Lauren are the only ones I like. The others kind of scare me!!
1/28/09, 11:26 AM
I could not get into this trend at all.
1/28/09, 11:27 AM
I couldn't even imagine wearing those. I think I would be afraid of suffocating!
1/28/09, 11:29 AM
"You're kidding, right?"
1/28/09, 11:30 AM
I like the big necklace, with the right neckline. Of these, love some, hate some:
Love Bottega Veneta, Chanel, Giambattista Valli, Gucci, Ralph Lauren, Viktor and Rolf
Hate Anna Sui, Dior, LaCroix, Marc Jacobs, Stella McCartney.
1/28/09, 11:30 AM
Some of them are fabulous! As you said, it's all in how you wear it and how you pair it.
1/28/09, 11:31 AM
I hate them!!!
1/28/09, 11:32 AM
Some of them are laughable, but they are on the runway, so I guess over-the-top is OK. Not in real life, though, no way!!
1/28/09, 11:34 AM
Like the Lauren necklace. It is the right necklace in the right color for the neckline shown on the model. The majority of the other necklace are not fugly (well about 10% are fugly) they are just with the wrong color garment or the wrong type neckline.
Howevber, the Stella McCartney is the worst of the lot. The necklace looks cheap and (as the other posters stated)like something in a cheap resort hotel bathroom holding back the shower curtain or holding the towels on the walls.
TampaBay
1/28/09, 11:36 AM
Sara and Todd NY, that's great, about the McCartney looking like a bad towel rack!! lol
1/28/09, 11:36 AM
Good God Almighty! The Pucci is so repulsive I almost vomited, I've seen better kindergarten accidents than the Marc by Marc, and if I wanted to wear a soap dish around my neck, I wouldn't need Stella Mc to design it for me. Fu-u-u-gly.
1/28/09, 11:36 AM
Most all of those are incredibly ugly.
I'm not sure about the Bottega Veneta. It looks like it might be nice but it's hard to tell worn with that blouse.
I like the Viktor & Rolf glass (?) necklace, and the Christian Lacroix could be amazing with the right dress.
The rest have dreadful proportions and/or look like someone's craft project gone badly awry.
1/28/09, 11:38 AM
Leaning to the Tom side, guys.
Valli, Gucci, Cavalli, maybe b. veneta all *could* be good with the right dress & occasion - but I am kind of against jewelry that you have to plan your wardrobe around, unless it is inherited jewels and you are a hereditary head of state.
Some of them, Victor & Rolf & Burberry in particular, are intriguing as wearable sculpture. Not a wardrobe category for most.
de La Renta, Vuitton and Kors smack of some "Make your own for pennies! Fashion accessories from your mom's old belts, drapery notions and garage sale finds!" article in a teen magazine. And, most definitely NOT in a good way.
I'm with Sara & ToddNY on the Mcartney evoking over-the-top bath decor.
Sorry Lorenzo. You're too fashion forward for me, I guess.
1/28/09, 11:42 AM
SplendiferousFiber:
Do you like Lorraine Schwartz (sp?)? Women were wearing some gorgeous big necklaces of hers at the Golden Globes, I think. Not that I could afford any of it, but she seems to do big jewelry well.
1/28/09, 11:43 AM
I liked a lot more of them than I thought I would.
The Burberry Prorsum is modern and somewhat understated (for a 'statement necklace' look). Love the color.
The Lacroix is totally 80's, but hot. It works.
The Giambattista Valli is very sculptural, and almost looks more like art than jewelry.
I want to like the Gucci one, but the way they used those minerals (is that blue malachite?) looks very arts-and-crafts simplistic and uninspired.
Lanvin = old lady necklace.
Oscar de la Renta - totally over the type, but luxurious rather than tacky.
Stella McCartney - reminds me of tacky 80's motel bathroom accessories with the white plastic-y 'strap' and horrible seashell.
Vera Wang - gorgeous.
1/28/09, 11:44 AM
anna sui: eh, it's okay. trite and derivative. plus it does not hang well.
bottega: would maybe be prettier if it didn't all look like cheap plastic.
burberry: I like it. I wouldn't wear it, not my thing, but I like. it appears to be leather, which is a nice touch, although I worry about how it will wear over time.
channel: love love love. I'm not a huge fan of the black bar at the bottom, but the rest is great.
dior: fun and funky. again, not my deal, but very nice.
lacroix: if it didn't have the poof, I'd be there.
pucci: eh, seen it before. nothing new.
valli: i'd have to see what the materials are before making a call. visually, not my deal.
gucci: eh, it's okay. not a huge fan of dyed gem cuttings. they fade over time and can leak their dye.
lanvin: looks cheap.
vuitton: remove the orange arms and I'd be there.
marc jacobs: eh, nothing new.
marni: super fun. I'm curious as to what the materials are, it looks like mica. Not a necklace i'd wear, but I appreciate the exuberance.
kors: boring.
oscar: great individual pieces, but too much all at once.
ralph lauren: pretty, but boring.
cavalli: niceish. if it's set glass, I like it more. however, i'm assuming that is is resin, which i'm not a huge fan of.
stella: miami called, they want their shell back.
vera wang: if she had just kept the chain base, I might like it okay. However, the length and putting so much weight at the bottom is unflattering.
viktor: eh, good concept bad execution.
1/28/09, 11:44 AM
Korto's worked great with her designs. I like some of Malan's jewelry (rings, especially).
As for the others. . . mostly oy.
I kind of like the Burberry except that it should be up higher, and in that material (leather?) it looks like samples from the tile store. The Chanel is nice; it looks like some coasters I have.
1/28/09, 11:46 AM
I like the Lacroix, the Kors, and the Cavalli. Other than those, not so much.
1/28/09, 11:47 AM
I kind of liked the burberry and the ralph lauren at the end.
1/28/09, 11:47 AM
Yay, I'm so glad other people thought Stella's was totally "bathroom." Nasty.
(And I meant "over the top" in reference to the Oscar de la Renta in my last post, not "over the type." Drrr.)
1/28/09, 11:48 AM
P.s. So many other haters here called out the Ralph Lauren as a "like" I went back and looked again.
Nope.
The proportions ARE wearable and in another finish I might like. But it has a shiny-faux-gold and fake pearl look which I associate with Monet & other department store costume jewelry which 7-yr-olds pick out for their mom's birthday. In such a large piece I just think that looks "chip in a chip way."
Sigh. No doubt we'll all be wearing (or at least seeing) down-market versions of these all over the place next year, and as someone said, it'll become one of the hallmarks of the period.
1/28/09, 11:51 AM
I know this post was about necklaces, but I just have to mention...even though I don't really like the Louis Vuitton necklace, I think the rest of the styling - and my GOD, those EARRINGS - are to fucking die for.
1/28/09, 11:52 AM
Yikes, the more I look at these the more appalled I am by most of them. They look so cheap. Even if there are actual stones--who'd know it? All I see is a jumble of Lucite, plastic beads, hardware store findings, Hannukah candy, scrubbies, fabric store trim, and crafts store left overs.
1/28/09, 11:53 AM
Not all of them are terrible, but most of them are NOT Nina-worthy. I like:
Chanel
Dior
Lacroix
Gucci
Stella McCartney
Most of the rest are "meh". Poor Shalom Harlow looks like she has some horrible disease (Viktor & Rolf). And the Louis Vuitton looks like they stuck a piece of sushi and some chopsticks on a necklace and called it art.
1/28/09, 11:59 AM
OMG. Those are HORRIBLE. RIDICULOUS. If I had no choice but to choose one designer, it would be Gucci. Otherwise, the rest can go into the Fug Hall of Shame!
1/28/09, 11:59 AM
I don't mind the Dior, the Kors, or the Ralph Lauren... but the rest of them are somehwat annoying.

It takes a certain degree of confidence to pull off one of these.
1/28/09, 12:12 PM
I'm not awe struck by any of these examples ( Malan and Korto's are the best of ) but I do like "statement" jewelry. And mixing high and low like huge semi precious stones with rhinestones or fake pearls, that kind of thing.
1/28/09, 12:15 PM
This is for the ladies:
Take a look at the Pucci.
Does it not remind you of something
we have seen and...uh...experienced...in the office of our GYN???
Ouch.
For almost all of these - the models are way too tiny to be able to carry such pieces. You need somepne of a little more substance
to pull it off.
1/28/09, 12:20 PM
It's made of resin and Lucite.
Lorenzo's favorite :)
Thanks! Lorenzo has good taste ;-)
1/28/09, 12:20 PM
It's a hit-or-miss. Some of them don't even look like necklaces (Marni and Gucci in particular) while others are really very pretty (Bottega Veneta, Vera Wang, Ralph Lauren and Micheal Kors). My particular favorite was the Roberto Cavalli one; it was simple yet structurally interesting with such a graphic pattern and it seems to have similar colors with the dress the (freaky) model is wearing. It's a strong piece by itself and it fit was paired with something that conflicted....EW.
I'm torn on the Viktor & Rolf one; I love the colors (especially matching the make-up) but the literal interpretation of an element (fire) and the way they strung it around the model's neck is bordering on lazy. It's boring and it needs smaller beads to separate the flames because this invisible-cords-stuck-to-model's-neck doesn't work so well. Cheesy.
1/28/09, 12:24 PM
What the heck was Stella McCartney thinking???? It's HIDEOUS!!!!!!
1/28/09, 12:24 PM
Also WTF Marc Jacobs. What. The. Fuck. Those look like kindergarten shoelaces (especially when placed next to the high-art snobbery of Louis Vuitton). Looooove those earrings on the Louis Vuitton model though; are clunky earrings going to be the next trend?
1/28/09, 12:25 PM
The whole Louis Vuitton look (necklace and earrings) is stunning. She looks amazing. Great post, TLo! You guys rock!!!
1/28/09, 12:30 PM
No, no, no, and no.
1/28/09, 12:32 PM
All the Stella-bathroom comments remind me of the lucite soapdish my aunt had in the 80s in the hall bath. The soapdish that had the shell shaped soaps one never used on it. Hanging above were the guest towels in aqua, pink and white white seashell appliques.
I kid you not.
1/28/09, 12:32 PM
Love them! I love giant, clunky necklaces.
1/28/09, 12:33 PM
TLo:
Have you heard anything about when Korto's going to launch her jewelry line?
I loved her pieces @FW, and would love to see what else she has to offer.
1/28/09, 12:34 PM
Some of them are very interesting, but I hate clunky or dangling jewelry.
1/28/09, 12:36 PM
Louis Vuitton: I WANT IT.

merciful heavens!

Oh good God. Now they're too skinny to wear necklaces? Do you want to know why the weight issue has become a point of contention here? Because of the ridiculously redundant "models are too thin!" tripe. We get it, k? Lol...as if no one's ever made that point before anyway. So, again I'll ask, since I assume this will get deleted...why is ok to make of thin people, but not fat people? I'd really appreciate an (intelligent) answer. ("I like my body and I'm size 18" doesn't count.)
1/28/09, 12:38 PM
As a woman of size, I could get away with most of these -- but I wouldn't want to. Except the Cavalli, which I like very much.

Siiiick. I thought the exact opposite, actually. Whenever you see all these pics like this side-by-side, you can always tell the more generic 'designers' (PR alums) from the real ones. Granted, there have been a couple PR contestants who have risen above, but they are few and far between (and don't include Korto or Malan. Apologies.)
1/28/09, 12:47 PM
love love love the giambattista valli!!!
the lacroix, lanvin and marni are also nice.
a lot of them look way too '80s.
1/28/09, 12:48 PM
They are fab. . . and I'm not really into jewelry usually.
1/28/09, 12:49 PM
What's the Viktor & Rolf one? Are they flames, shrimp cocktails or Chinese roast ducks?
1/28/09, 12:50 PM
Aesthetics (or lack thereof) aside, do you think any of the designers had a clue how heavy these would be to wear for very long?!
1/28/09, 12:55 PM
I don't like any of these, actually.
1/28/09, 12:55 PM
I think the Burberry Prorsum is gorgeous, along with the blue gucci, and the one that's right after the door knocker..i mean the Emilio Pucci.
it looks like they locked up a bunch of old grandmas in a room, gave them extra large crafting beads you can buy at walmart, and threatened to take away their prune juice if they didn't make necklaces.
horrible, too clunky, and cheap looking
1/28/09, 12:56 PM
Chunky necklaces that look like jewelry--fine. Chunky "necklaces" that look like a kid's craft fair project--no.
1/28/09, 1:02 PM
I love a big chunky necklace. Most of these are pretty awesome, except for the Christian Dior alien corpse thing. WTF?
And the last one by whomever, with glass flames, not a good look.
Otherwise, I could see a time and a place for all of these. They are pieces of art, and with the right outfit can really be stunning.
1/28/09, 1:10 PM
Here is the real test:
Which ones would you actually wear... or better yet, which would you actually BUY and wear?
I started out thinking that my answers were only the Gucci and the Lauren. Then I realized I like the way the Gucci looks... but not on my neck. I would only buy the Lauren.
And poor Stella McCartney. She really thinks she is a designer. She seems like a pleasant person, but I have yet to see anything from her that I like. Not.One.Thing.
1/28/09, 1:21 PM
Who on earth would wear Vera Wang's? That thing must weigh a ton.
1/28/09, 1:21 PM
I like about half of them, namely:
Chanel
Valli
Gucci
Lanvin
Kors
Lauren
Cavalli
In theory, they're fun and make a statement, however:
if you're a larger-busted woman, you can't wear any of them. So, if you're built like a model and have barely any boobs, wear them away and we more endowed gals will live vicariously through you!
1/28/09, 1:30 PM
FAVORITES
Cavalli
Chanel
Dior
Vuitton
Valli
Burberry
McCartney (I guess that makes GF and me, LOL)
HOT MESS
Marnie—SNORT, hot GLUE mess
Marc Jacobs—dyed macaroni
de la Renta—grab bag at the craft store
La Croix—pair of sunglasses and a squoosh ball
Veneta—I have a Christmas ornament just like this
The rest MIGHT work, with the right outfit and person to carry off the look. Some scary models here.
And Korto, still LOVE hers.
—lulu
1/28/09, 1:31 PM
The only one I could really consider wearing would be the Cavalli.
jh :)
1/28/09, 1:34 PM
ICK!! SCARY, especially the Lacroix. Did a poor chinchilla give it's life for that THING?
Cavalli must be channeling his Italian heritage with that evil eye. Chanel = vintage kitchen utensils.
The only one I even LIKED was Kors.
The rest will give me nightmares.
On the other hand, I would wear Korto's designs. They are gorgeous!!!
1/28/09, 1:36 PM
The only one I would consider wearing is the Gucci, because of it's simple design. The other necklaces are collectively a tacky, hot mess.
1/28/09, 1:36 PM
O.K., it's a perplexed fascination I must suppress to get to work, but I went and looked at several of the collections to see the necklaces in context - I mean, really, these are talented people, there's more to it than I am getting, right?
Interesting exercise, which I highly recommend. So far, in most cases, the full body shots don't really improve my love for the jewelry, though, again in most-not-all cases, one can better see how it fits into the feel of the collection.
We're talking necklaces here, so I will try to shut up and go back to work, but I will have to say that (IMO) Louis Vuitton has it goin' on this spring.

Yes! Thank you! All these women saying thin models can't pull these off as well as large women of size are CRAZY. When you're big, you don't ADD volume! These are definitely necklaces for thin women, assuming you don't want to end up looking like an obese clown whore. (Spoken by someone who would definitely look like an obese clown whore in some of these!)

No, no, no. I want to read what YOU have to say about them. :)
1/28/09, 1:50 PM
Vera wang's looks like a mob of angry horseshoe crabs are aiming for the model's neck
Emilio Pucci's looks like he stuck his bike lock around the model
and Dior's looks morbid, like fetus'
1/28/09, 1:56 PM
With the exceptions of Ralph Lauren and Cavelli, they all look whip lash inducing. Call the chiropractor, quick.

Most of them are horrible and/or ridiculous... but for some reason I'm smitten with the Christian Lacroix necklace! So clue why but I feel I have to touch it.
1/28/09, 2:04 PM
I'm with Tom. I normally love and wear big necklaces (well, maybe mine are medium, especially compared to these), but these things are just too big and ugly as hell.
That last one...what...are those...shrimp? Jesus.

There was a fad in my parts a few years back among tween girls in which they wore necklaces and bracelets strung with plastic beads and little pink plastic babies, like those in the King Cake served during Mardi Gras. That's what I thought of!
1/28/09, 2:08 PM
Uh gee, these are over the top for a reason. They probably cost thousands of dollars, and are in no way, shape, or form meant for large-size production or distribution. They are ART PIECES, people! They can still certainly be ugly (as many of them are) but "I wouldn't wear A, B, C, D or E" really shouldn't ever enter the equation. Les doi.
1/28/09, 2:30 PM
Love the Cavalli and the Ralph Lauren!
1/28/09, 2:39 PM
Like Amy Winehouse said of rehab: "No, No No."
1/28/09, 2:50 PM
If you're going to wear a "statement" piece, then in my mind it shouldn't have to fight for attention with the outfit.
Korto and Malan had it right. From the others, I liked the Burberry, Gucci and Cavalli. The others do look like tween art camp projects.
1/28/09, 2:55 PM
Most of these are just plain ugly.
I did like the chanel, cavalli and gucci as for the rest waste of time.
1/28/09, 2:57 PM
Victor - dead crawfish hanging on her neck
Lacroix - dead baby porqipine explosion.
1/28/09, 2:59 PM
The Viktor and Rolf thing looks like something Mr. Heat Miser would wear!!! "I'm Mr. Heat Miser, I'm Mr. Sun..."
jh :)
1/28/09, 3:00 PM
I am with Tom on this one.
1/28/09, 3:04 PM
I love necklaces, especially bold and funky ones. But these are so overdone, it's ridiculous. Anything else you could wear would be competition to what's around your neck.
1/28/09, 3:05 PM
I want the Burberry Porsum SO badly, its gorgeous.
1/28/09, 3:17 PM
I love the Bottega Veneta. The rest were alright. Some where a little much.
1/28/09, 3:25 PM
Okay, the Dior one I think is the most ridiculous. It's like she has a war trophy necklace after attacking the lollipop guild!
I think chunky necklaces are better the simpler you keep them. Most of these aren't simple, unfortunately, and result in travesties on the runway.
1/28/09, 3:28 PM
I like:
Anna Sui, Lauren, Vuitton
On the others:
Prorsum and Channel make me glad I'll be able to wear my huge 'art deco' jewelry from the late 80's/early 90's again and look 'in style.'
La Crois- I think I played with her necklace when I was 12. They called it a Foos Ball or something similar back then, though.
Jacobs - Look mommy, I made it myself on my craft loom!
Marni- DANGER! DANGER! TOO MUCH NECKLACE! TOOOO MUCH NECKLACE!
Kors- This fashion line now brought to you by the Olympics.
McCartney- I think I've seen that necklace in cheap 'theme' hotel bathrooms, holding up the towels.
Rolf- I can already see the Hot Topic knock off. Giant sparkly flame thing are SOOOO GAWWWWFF.

Anonymous said I was making disparaging remarks about thin models.
I do wish we could post without fear of being attacked. I commented that the models are
too small to carry large pieces - that was NOT a comment of any kind on thin people. There are just some things that look better on larger people. And some on smaller. And some mid size...have I covered all bases?
1/28/09, 4:23 PM
I'm surprised a lot of people liked the Ralph Lauren one. I think it's so tacky.
1/28/09, 4:25 PM
ULLE speaks the truth. The one people seem to like the most is the grossest, cheapest-looking Vegas Showgirl thing up there. I guess there's no accounting for taste...
(And yes, there IS good taste vs. bad taste. Bad taste is Jay McCarroll's prints. Good taste is everything else.)

Yes, but I didn't say I was right and they were wrong.

SPEW. ALERT!
LOL!
Oh yes you di'id!
1/28/09, 4:34 PM
I'm in love with the Giambattista Valli one. Gorgeous!
1/28/09, 4:39 PM
Ah well, ULLE, I did. Did I imply anything to the contrary?
1/28/09, 4:41 PM
um...no.
1/28/09, 4:42 PM
The Gucci, Ralph Lauren, and Marc Jacobs ones were okay at best.
The rest were awful.
1/28/09, 5:11 PM
I liked Malan's and Korto's the best. But they were more traditional. A lot of those necklaces are avant garde.
did one of those necklaces have a koosh ball on it? lol
1/28/09, 5:12 PM
I vote with Tom. There are a few I really like. The rest are either meh, or paired with clothes that aren't making the most of them.
Most fugly: Burberry Prorsum, Giambattista Valli, Marni, Viktor and Rolf.
Stuff I would probably like if it was with other clothes or accessories: Emilio Pucci, Louis Vuitton
Stuff I rather like: Dior (though I'm not thrilled with the little people figures; it's a bit too icky-trophy-ish), Gucci, Roberto Cavalli.
I could enumerate the flaws of the others (Michael Kors's is fine, except that I wore it as a belt in 1985), but that would take all day.
1/28/09, 5:14 PM
If the white Lanvin was paired with something dark, fitted and with a high neck it would''ve been fabulous.
The rest ... bleck!
Chunky necklaces can be great, these are not.
1/28/09, 5:26 PM
1/28/09, 5:29 PM
Hmmm...I think these necklaces look quite matronly; like they'd be worn by one of those older women who wear tent dresses, birkinstocks and the same hairstyle they were wearing back in 1970.
There is something appealing about the 'marni' though. I don't know why. Maybe because it reminds me of bakelite.
I like statement necklaces though. Just not these. Someone who wears consistantly great necklaces is Robin Roberts, of Good Morning America. Not too much; funky, yet elegant.

"Tlo said: Lorenzo's favorite :)"
HA! Great minds think alike.
The marni would also be good for those actresses who take the advice of Rachel Zoe, and need to cover their boney chests.

A lot of these are actually fabulous necklaces that are inexplicably paired with busy high necked dresses/blouses. Most would look stunning with a very plain dress, especially strapless.
I don't get the Lacroix, though. Is that a Koosh ball? It looks like a Koosh ball.
1/28/09, 5:54 PM
Ugly, all of them.
1/28/09, 5:58 PM
I'm impressed with a lot of these necklaces actually. They're modern and fun, not to mention a great way to spice up a dull outfit. My favs are the Anna Sui, Burbery Prorsum, Gucci, and Lanvin. Definitely best suited for young girls with bold fashion sense and long slender necks.

Does anybody else think that the Marc Jacobs model has had her ears pinned back?
1/28/09, 6:22 PM
Oh My God, someone save that last model from the mini horseshoe crabs who are sucking her life blood and turning her into one of them beginning with the temples!! Help herrrrr!!

OMG!!! Crazy ears!!! Pinned back or nail-gunned back. Yikes.
1/28/09, 6:46 PM
I am so laughing at myself, it IS koosh ball, NOT squoosh ball!
And I agree with Todd, who said:

I can see how they work on the runway, but they will not work on us mortals going out our normal fabulous lives.

For almost all of these - the models are way too tiny to be able to carry such pieces. You need somepne of a little more substance
to pull it off.
Here is the deal on why models are skinny based on my days when I did some regional runway modeling at several regional apparrel marts: You can pin, tuck, belt or let hang a garment that is too big on a skinny model but you cannot expand a sample size dress to fit a larger model. The less expenzive a garment will retail for the smaller the sample garment to save on fabric and trim cost. When you get into the high end Milan, Paris and NYC designers the dresses are fitted to/for a specific model and high end designers in NYC and Europe like extra skinny women with no bust.
In Califorina the designers like more athletic women with a busty bust line. Therefore, the sample garments are larger and so are the runway models.

Ew.
At 4'll" if I attempted to wear any of these things, I'd look like I was playing dress up with a bunch of rejected drag queen jewelery. No thanks.
1/28/09, 7:55 PM
The only one of these I really like is Korto's. The others, in my opinion, range from cool artsy (Gucci)to cheap craftsy (Marni).
I am a creative soul, and can appreciate these as abstract works of art. But not as necklaces. These seem so heavy and overpowering to me.
1/28/09, 8:18 PM
Love love love the Giambattista Valli. The rest aren't doing it for me.
1/28/09, 9:40 PM
Oh, lordy. Not a size bickerfest again. Look, it does matter...but in a way completely irrelevant to the "models are too skinny" whine, which, I agree, gets old.
As Condo Blues points out, a small-framed woman could conceivably be overwhelmed by outsized accessories. I actually think a similar issue is at play with Michelle Obama's cardigans: the new First Lady is fabulously tall and has strong shoulders...a dainty cardi looks schlumpy on her frame, where a well-tailored jacket would be fabulous. A slight woman, on the other hand, tends to look better in a smaller cardigan, and can look a bit like a child playing dress-up in a more substantial jacket.
I've said it before and I'll say it again. Size does matter. And, not because one size is pretty and another is ugly. It's just that there is no universally flattering garment, and no woman can be truly well dressed if she hasn't kept her figure in mind as she's chosen her outfit.

My reactions, in order as I scrolled down the page:
- no
- might be okay but can't tell with the shirt
- interesting
- blah
- WTF - sea creatures attacking her neck?
- that's not a necklace, someone ripped the handle off a duffle bag, right?
-ooh, I actually like that one (Valli)
- meh
- pretty shape but blah
- craft time, and with those earrings too?!
- blah
- um...
- blah
- yuck, hideous old lady necklace
- ditto
- blah
- soap dish (as has been said above)
- wow, I like two of them (Vera Wang)
- at least it's interesting without being overly hideous....
I think I'm not a fan of this trend.
1/28/09, 11:17 PM
I am loathe to chime in, being a humble stay-at-home-mommy, but here I go anyway.
Anna Sui: undecided. Could be amazing with the right clothing.
Bottege Veneta: no
Burberry Prosum: no
Chanel: ?
Dior: no
Lacroix: hell no
Pucci: no
Valli: no
Gucci: yes
Lanvin: yes
Vuiton: no
Jacobs: Maybe
Marni: no
Michael Kors: yes
De La Renta: hell no
Ralph Lauren: YES!
Cavalli: maybe, with just the right outfit
Stella McCartney: no, but I have an unreasonable fear of lucite.
Wang: No
Viktor & Rolf: No
But what the hell do I know?
1/28/09, 11:18 PM
Ugh. Tom I am whole heartedly in your camp. There are only a few that I would wear, and those being the longer ones. The choker ones I think would make me feel like I was being strangled.
1/28/09, 11:20 PM
The Christian Dior scares me.
1/29/09, 12:26 AM
i actually really like the gucci one, its extremely cute. the micheal kors one stood out to me but only because i think i saw it when i was at some crappy teen store in the mall.
1/29/09, 4:57 AM
I neeeeed the chanel one and the ralph lauren!!!
*drooool...
1/29/09, 8:58 AM
I like some of them - I may have to see them with the whole look - not just the necklace itself.
One other trend I notice -- some ghostly faces!
thanks for the post!
xoxo

I agree that the necklines of the garments are competing with the necklaces. This type of necklace looks best when worn with a jewel neckline solid color dress or a very low "v" neckline.
As to the weight or size of the person wearing it. I should think it doens't matter that much as long as the garment is right. Two exceptions would be that if the person has a thick neck the choker style not be too tight around the neck and if the person is very thin not have the necklace appear to be heavier than the wearer. In the case of a person having a large bust as long as the necklace doesn't end right at or near the apex of the bust (giving the effect of knick knacks on a shelf) it would be okay, but very short or very long necklaces would be best.
1/29/09, 10:12 AM
I made a "statement necklace" using vintage black and white earrings from the 80's - those huge buttons and geometrics. It's received many compliments but is literally a "pain in the neck"!
Fun for those w/o degenerative disc disease!
1/29/09, 10:59 AM
Good to know about this particular trend. I can now wear the off the wall crazy creations of pipe cleaners, beads, and string necklaces that my little girls make and bring home from school and be on trend!!
1/29/09, 11:00 AM
Yep I agree, some of these are really ugly.
But what a fun trend to wear huge (ugly) necklaces! Love it!!!! I hope this find a way from the runway to everyday life, I can so see myself wearing necklaces like these!
1/29/09, 11:37 AM
I like the Roberto Cavalli. Aside from that piece, me no likey.
1/29/09, 11:55 AM
Love the Gucci and Lanvin!
1/29/09, 2:23 PM
It's a wonder that some of those 52 lb. models can even stand up straight under the weight of those necklaces. And what was Michael Kors thinking with that flower thing? *said in my best Ms Kors voice* tacky, tacky, tacky.
1/29/09, 8:00 PM
Jennie - Hey that cheap plastic thing of stella McCartney, I don't think it is lucite, but just plastic.
Lucite (good lucite) is generally not milky and cheap looking but clear, and glass-like and smooth to the touch and sleek and.. wait my fetish for lucite (which had extended to furniture and shoes heels -in the past) is showing!
1/30/09, 3:01 AM
Well, I for one adore big, statement-making jewelry. Clunky necklaces? Love them. That having been said, this particular collection of clunky necklaces is hideous. Wouldn't wear 'em if you paid me, and I wear some crazy stuff. Just, NO.
1/30/09, 1:30 PM
I love them ALL, except for the Christian Lacroix one that looks like a flower is choking her, and the Marni one (I think). I also WEAR big old clunky necklaces whenever I get the chance, whether it is on trend or not. I am not a dainty petite little thing, so small jewelry gets lost on me.
1/31/09, 5:01 PM
Sui, Cavalli, Gucci rock, in that order. Otherwise, feh!
