Lost: Season 5 Episode 3: Jughead

Labels: ,

Man, this show is just rocketing along, dropping little bombshells along the way.

♦ Did anyone else shout "SHUT THE FUCK UP!" at their TV when the cute British soldier was revealed to be none other than a young Charles Widmore? Or was that just us? By the way, we think old Charles Widmore is kind of a hot daddy, but young Charles Widmore... Me.Ow.

♦ Similarly, did anyone else gasp when the bitchy British female soldier was called "Ellie" by Richard Alpert? Because Mrs. Hawkings' first name is Eloise and Daniel said she reminded him of someone...DANIEL WAS BEING HELD AT GUNPOINT BY HIS OWN MOTHER FIFTY YEARS IN THE PAST. Our heads hurt.

♦ Does this mean that Charles is Daniel's father? All signs point to "yes." He funded his research for ten years and he was able to whip out Mrs. Hawkings' address for Desmond without even thinking about it. But if he's Daniel's father, that means he basically sent him on a suicide mission when he let him get on that freighter; right? We knew he was a bastard but we didn't know he was THAT much of a bastard.

♦ Little Charlie Hume! How freaking sweet is that? Of course, he has the same first name as his grandfather and with all the time-leaping and mystery parentage in this show, that's led some others online to make some squicky suppositions, but we're not going there.

♦ Oh man, Penny's a goner, isn't she? They're heading to L.A.; Ben's in L.A.; Ben vowed to kill Charles' daughter...this ain't looking good for Lost's star-crossed lovers. We're not even all that crazy about Penny but we would be deeply upset if these two don't get their happy ending. And speaking of goners...

♦ It's not looking good for Charlotte. Once Daniel admitted his love for her, the writing was on the wall. We hope she makes it. We hated her when she first showed up but we like her more and more with each episode. And speaking of characters we formerly hated but now love...

♦ GO JULIET! The survivors are damn lucky she's still on the island, what with her medical training and intimate knowledge of The Others. How cool was it when she started speaking Latin to the soldiers? And speaking of Juliet...

♦ It's kind of cool how Sawyer and Juliet are now the blonde, alternate-universe version of Jack and Kate. They're clearly in charge, they're clearly getting a little hot for each other (their glances are getting deeper and more longing with each episode) and one's a doctor and one's a criminal.

♦ Man, Juliet's got a history of taking another woman's sloppy seconds, doesn't she?

♦ So is "Jughead" what was buried behind the concrete in the Swan station? If it was, how could the island have survived once Desmond blew it up?

♦ Wait...so, Locke actually sent Richard Alpert to check up on him when he was born? Our heads hurt.

Did we miss anything? Add your own bullet points!

I seriously love you guys. I love LOST and am so so excited you guys are giving it the TLo treatment. I don't think the magnetic "thing" they were digging below the hatch was the same as the H-bomb. I did hate Juliet, and now love her too!

If that was Faraday's mom, she had him kind of late, no? He's what, young thirties? I do think it's his mother, I'm just saying...

Also, I just started watching last season, so: when did Desmond blow up the bomb?

I think Little Charlie was named after the other Little Charlie (the former hobbit), not Mr. Skidmark.

People seem to age differently on the island, so I'm pretty sure Ellie was holding her own son at gun point. I hope Mr. Skidmark is not his father. That would be mean.

Yes, Penny's death is looming close...

Marty the Wizard

Wow. I read other LOST recaps and they did not make the Ellie-Faraday connection. That is why I love you guys.

great re-cap. i think after every episode my head explodes! its so helpful reading other peoples thoughts.
the baby charlie moment was a lovely suprise. love penny & desmond, so many hoping for the best but is it possible?
have to admit i missed me some jack & hurley

I don't think "Jughead" is anywhere near the Swan station. To me it looks like the location of the Others' sonic fence. Could it be the power source???

Man, I love you guys!!! I couldnt believe the neck-snapping soldier was Charles Widmore!

All I can say is, you make every show better with your blog...

I think Ellie is definitely Faraday's mom, and Locke did sent Richard to visit him on his birthday, but what about when Richard saw Locke as a child and tested him? Was that of his own will or did Locke send him that time too?

I'd like to thing "Jughead" was what was behind the concrete wall in the Swan station, but how would the island survive that?

Oh, and yes, Juliet and Sawyer are TOTALLY the new Jack and Kate... I see them hooking up soon.

I refuse to believe that Penny is going to die. doesn't ben have a million other things to worry about in the next 70 hours than exacting his revenge on widmore? Not to mention it's going to take a day for Desmond/penny to even get to LA.

If any couple deserves to survive all this, it should be Penny and Desmond. After the Constant, how could you not love that couple. i sort of hate what they did with Penny in this episode... liked her better when she was in charge. Now she's just typical mom. I hope they do something a bit more interesting with her character.

I don't think the H bomb was in the swan station because that was built long after it was buried. Clearly the H bomb is some factor in the island, but seems unlikely it's at the swan station. Also, I don't think it would be a good idea to put an atomic weapon next to unstable electormagnetic energy.

this show is awesome, probably my favorite of all time. How they could keep coming up with new twists and questions, while answering questions is amazing. And nothing seems that far fetched, either.

I'm forwarding this from a friend who noticed that the same little black and white rocks found near the "Adam and Eve" skeletons in season 1 were on a bedside table in Penny And Desmond's abode.

Could they be Adam & Eve?

Also, am I think only one who dislikes Locke? Obviously the timeline preservation would prevent locke from shooting young widmore (cute, but to 50s for me), but he's always messing things up and has lame excuses.

After killing Naomi, there was no redemption. Jack may have flaws, but I'd take Jack any day over Locke. Hell, I'd take sawyer over Locke.

I find his character frustrating, and was kind of happy he was dead at the end of season 4. My guess is that he ends up coming back to life.

I never thought that I'd want to jump Charles Widmore. That's the biggest surprise of all.

T-Lo? When are you going to do another virgins and vixens? I miss them.

I was so sad when runway and mad men were over for the season, as reading your take on them is half the fun of watching, but now that you've starting giving LOST the "TLo treatment as Alice said, life is good! :)
I do think you're right, Ellis has to be Faraday's mom. You had better be wrong about Penny though! After The Constant episode, how could they kill her off? NOOOOO! Ben's gonna needs Desmond.
I love the Sawyer/Juliet combo, her smarts and his sarcasm is going to be fun to watch.
Best line of the show was I think Ellie asking "are they from the future too?" and Sawyer saying "you told her?!" You've gotta love the Sawyer one liners...
Who's the girl in the coma? Nothing is ever random on this show. How old would Ben's childhood friend be? Did she die, I can't remember.

I'm so confuuzed!! I fell asleep last night (scraping ice off my driveway exhausted me!) I have never missed a Lost episode (a faithful watcher from the very beginning), I faithfully read blogs, and discuss the episodes at lunch the next day, but I can not for the life of me figure out what is happening. Much less who is who and when is when, (must be onset dementia), but I am along for the ride... still love the show, still shout out at some parts, but most of the time, I look at my husband and say, huh? what just happened?
Glad to have you two on the Goodship Lost, and I look forward to your wonderful comments, you can hold my hand and explain what I just saw!

I forgot to include this link to a fabulous Lost online discussion from the Washington Post. Those gals are a stitch and after reading their take on last nights episode, I expect to see Marty McFly and the flux capacitor!!

Nope I didn't yell "shut the fuck up" when I found out Charles Whidmore was there because I had fainted on the floor ahahah. Now it makes sense why he is so fricking obessed with the Island.

And if Charles is Daniels father do you think he knows and isn't telling Desmond? Oh and Daniel as well as the Asian guy who can feel dead people is Dr Kandle from he freaky video's son) and they where both born on the Island!

Finally I think you guys missed something Desmond and Penny's baby was clearly named after Charlie who saved Desmonds life not Charles Widmore. But wouldn't it be funny it Charlie the baby is Charlie who ended up saving Desmonds life , it could happend with all this freaky time travel.

We never said that little Charlie was named after his grandfather. Clearly, he was named after Charlie Pace. We're just pointing out that despite that, he has the same first name as his grandfather, which has led some online to theorize that baby Charlie grows up to be Charles Widmore. We don't think so, because it's a little gross to consider that Penny gave birth to her own father.

My bad Tlo. The Charlie/Charles thing is the writers f'ing with us again. Just like the names John Locke, Rousso, the others speaking Latin, and enlightenism themes.

When Richard comes to visit Locke, he hands him three things and asks which belongs to the boy - the boy chose the knife, Richard is disgruntled and leaves

Now, we obviously know that Richard visited Locke because Locke gave him the compass in the "past" - yet, the compass was not chosen because it never belonged to Locke, because Richard gave it to him in the "future"

Ah, head hurting -

I originally thought the "other others" from the past were Danielle's team....

Yet, the way they speak Latin is intriguing - I'm hoping that the Latin (dead language) education will tie somehow into the meaning of the big statue with 4 toes.....??????

...and Richard must be Zeus' son, because he never ages.

Oy - Project Runway is so much less complicated. One day you're in - and the next YOU'RE OUT. Pretty simple. No time travel, no moving islands, no smoke monsters.

Seriously, Lost makes my head hurt too. But I continue to watch. Thanks for 'splaining some stuff I didn't unnerstand!

XOXOXOXOXO

another laura

TLo, how about Virgins & Vixens, please?

Carry on.

Another Anne

I like Bee's comment about Des and Penny as "Adam & Eve". We are reminded every few episodes how special Desmond is and I can't believe that the producers of the show would devote so much time to Desmond and Penny without a happy ending.

So count me in the no way in hell is Penny going to die column. Those 2 are going to sail off into the sunset with little Charlie and live happily ever after or else!!

Does anyone else suspect that Miles the "medium" is the baby that was seen in a flashback being fed by the head doctor of the Dharma project in the opening scene of this seasons first episode?

TLo, y'all are the first blog to theorize that adam and eve could be penny and des and that seems so right on! if y'all want your head to hurt even more, go to doc jensen's column at ew.com...your mind will be blown at all the theories he has flying around for lost.

on another note--young charles is HOT. and as much as i hope charles isn't daniel's dad, it seems pretty plausible. the only weird thing is that richard in this ep didn't seem to know about time travel yet. that would make it seem that the 50s is his true timeline. however, juliet says he's 'old', like he's ancient. so i'm still hoping that he was originally on the black rock, like one blog i read theorized.

(sigh) awesome show.

TLo, why didn't you mention how beautiful Desmond looked last night? His hair is so sexy.

Where is Virgins and Vixens?

What has this blog become?

I absolutely shouted "SHUT THE FUCK UP" at the reveal-those words exactly!

I feel like waiting a year for this season was SO WORTH IT. I usually love to hate the program, but the last few eps have been all out joy. BTW The Ellie/Faraday connection is technically a spoiler, as Mrs Hawkins first name has not been formally revealed ( it was shown on a recap/pop up facts episode).

Amanda in Austin

I totally missed the connection that Ellie was Daniel's mom. Wow! I was thinking that she reminded him of the woman he made into a vegetable at Oxford. What a douche!

And I think Desmond and Penny's son is not named after Charles Widmore but Charlie from the island! Charlie gave his life so that others could get off the island, and Des is paying his respects by naming his kid after Charlie.

You're killing me!

Of course, this might all answer why no babies are born on the island anymore (or ever?) — where would they be on the time/space continuum?

Thanks for blogging Lost! I love the Virgins and Vixens posts too. To those complaining, I think we can have both, no?

JUGHHEAD was the name on the hydrogen bomb.

Young Widmore was totally hot and still pretty dickish. I'm on board with the Ellie=Eloise=Daniel's mother theory (though I wonder why his last name is Faraday and hers is Hawking; maybe that's just her "cool code name" ala Bentham). I get why people are speculating that Penny is Widmore and Ellie's offspring, but what if Widmore and Ellie are actually *siblings* instead of lovers? Widmore's "Shut up, Ellie!" just came across as something an annoyed older brother would say. Then that explains him funding Daniel's research --Daniel is his nephew-- and why he knew Hawking's location in LA -- she's his sister.

I'll be pissed if anything happens to Penny or Charlotte because a) I like the characters and b) this show has a crappy tendency to kill off women. It's starting to really bother me. We're down to what, 5 main female characters now? That's ridiculous.

I'm not sure I like the idea of a Juliet/Sawyer romantic pairing, because we all know that once Kate gets back to the island poor Juliet will get dumped AGAIN. I'm tired of her being "the other woman" all the time. I much prefer Juliet and Sawyer as a team of asskicking leaders and friends, like Ana Lucia and Eko were for the Tailies. I'm sick of the whole Jack/Kate/Sawyer triangle anyway, though. I think one of the big reasons why I totally loved this episode (besides the fact that Desmond and Daniel are my favorite characters) is because of the complete lack of Jack and Kate. Glorious.

I didn't shout STFU - because 5 minutes earlier I'd just told my friend, "I bet he's Widmore!" I did shout, I KNEW IT!! Which almost never happens with Lost.

Eloise was also the name of Daniel's test hamster who died in the experiment... or was it? Dan had told Des to tell him, "I know about Eloise" to prove that he knew him and was from the future.

You guys are absolute geniuses - I don't read a ton about Lost online, but I do visit a few sites, and none of them have connected Ellie to Eloise! I love it!
