Ripping the PR Philippines Collections: Aries Lagat

We're just gonna give away the ending right now: Aries was the winner with this collection of 13 looks, one of which had to be menswear. He described his muse thusly: "She's from another planet and she comes to earth because her planet is dying; she has to adapt but it doesn't always work, hence, the unbalance, most of the garments are distorted."

Unfortunately, there's not a word of that with which we disagree.

Watch the runway show here.

We'll say this about the guy: he's definitely got a point of view. Unfortunately, we can't see a lot of "skill" in this collection what with the "point of view" being so loud and all.

This wasn't bad. Hate the hem, but the bust and shoulder detail is interesting.

Ugh. NO.

Had this been constructed better, we could have perhaps discussed its structural qualities. Instead, we're blinded by bad sewing and forced to point out that it makes her hips look huge.

Not bad.

Also not bad. Mind you, we're not saying we'd ever wear this, but it's at least a cohesive look, with a minimum of execution issues.

No. Awful. It looks like 3 or four different outfits all worn at once.

It's like he hasn't finished building that bodice yet.

HORRIBLE.

Strangely incongruous. It's too simple and basic a dress compared to the rest of the collection.

Of course, then he had to have the gimmick to end all gimmicks.

Kinda lame.

It would have been cool if it made three great outfits, but the upshot to this whole schtick is "We took ONE cute dress and made THREE HIDEOUS OUTFITS out of it!"

Fugly pleated nightmares.

1. did I even know that there was a PR Phillipines????

2. Since his muse was from another planet, maybe they have strange sized hips and torsos, so this would actually fit those beings.

3. Wait. I get it now. This is a Saturday Night Live skit right? you were just fooling us about "PR Phillipines"......

-TLo Addict-

The second look is okay, it kind of looks Donna Karanish from a few years ago. And I like the fugly pleated nightmare skirt. Other than that nothing stands out.

The make-up is horribly unflattering to the models.

Ah. Thanks for the critique, TLo, I can't wait for Philip's and Veejay's. I hope you haven't yet been completely blown away by the fug of Aries's collection. Actually when I was watching it, I didn't think it was that bad (hated the "insect faces as bodices" thing apparently going on, though), but with these high-res pics, it's really easy to see the flaws. The very last pleated nightmare is on display at a mall here, so I got to see it really up close. There are no words. (Thankfully, there's you guys!)

Thanks for this post, guys! I kind of like # 4, but I agree, it's poorly constructed. I read that the other two finalists had better collections.

Not loving it, but the made model is hot, no?

Hope you bitches had a fabulous Thanksgiving.

Oh, my.

I like the men's look and the Build-a-Bear dress (before they pulled it apart); it's pretty. And it gives us this classic line from TLo:

"the upshot to this whole schtick is 'We took ONE cute dress and made THREE HIDEOUS OUTFITS out of it!'"

I will have nightmares about that eyeshadow (err and the clothes)!

They're hideous and he's the winner???

Yes, I like the male model, too. As for everything else, I apologize now for every unkind thought I have ever articulated about the clothes and models we see on the U.S. version. Not that I won't articulate unkind thoughts in the future, but right now, I feel compelled to express regret.

fugly pleated nightmares! awesome :)

The last model has HUGE boobies!

Have to disagree - I like this collection. It moved wonderfully and it was a clear POV. Is it to everyone's taste - no, but it is very innovative and not the same familiar shapes that are repeated over and over in so many shows.
When I first saw the so- called "gimmick" piece transitioning it literally made me have goosepimples. So I have strong positive feelings about this collection.

I watched the series on you tube. It wasn't my favorite, that breaks down:

PR Canada (Iman is the best)
PR USA 2nd Season
PR Australia (Now you all say brief)

But it was at times great, always super queer and I enjoyed it. It was cool the way they centered the Phillipines and not Europe or the US.

Yes, and why on earth would they put her in a mock turtleneck???

"He described his muse thusly: "She's from another planet and she comes to earth because her planet is dying; she has to adapt but it doesn't always work, hence, the unbalance, most of the garments are distorted.""

Is pot legal in the Phillipines?

--GothamTomato

PR PHILIPPINES? Are you kidding me? D: Yet another show ruined by my country's ripoffs. Seriously, I can't think of anything original or good in my country's TV programs nowadays...

That said, the last dress isn't bad. I'd wear it.

@GothamTomato: I don't think so, but who knows? He might have had... special contacts, if you know what I mean. :(

"We'll say this about the guy: he's definitely got a point of view."

So does Sean Hannity, but I wouldn't want him dressing me (or talking to me, come to think of it).

At some point, 'point of view' became synonymous with 'batshit crazy'. I'm not sure when that was, but I'm thinking there's no turning back now.

--GothamTomato

Gotham--
Sean Hannity, pot, p.o.v.=batshit crazy . . . too funny!!

tell us what you really think...

THIS collection was from the WINNER? My god, I can't wait to see what the losers came up with...

These are some of the ugliest clothes I've ever seen. If this collection was the best I truly can't imagine how hideous the other collections must have been.

And not to be a total bitch, but I was surprised that the models were much heavier than American and European models. They're still probably smaller than the average woman but they were pretty large for models. It was .... different.

u should do a critique of the other project runway versions! really want to see your take on the australian version and the uk version (although it's long over...)

PR Philippines? Good god, you boys are hardcore!

Frightening. Makes me glad for our original PR. Any season.

With the exception of the busty one in that last photo, I would say these models are perfect. They're thin but not sickly frail thin. I wish American models looked this healthy and realistic.

Ew, awful.
If this guy won, I can't imagine what the other contestants sent down the runway. :(

honesty.not.pc

Uh....

I am totally confused, this post is a little out of left field. There is a PR philippines??? And I have been blinded by the fugliness of it. This person WON??

I only liked the boring dress, until it was torn apart and turned into the trifecta of fug.

anonymous12:12
said that the models looked heaver, still small but it was different

I thought they looked great.

Some of the models on our last PR looked like they were going to break waking down the runway. Leann's little model who looked 16, could barley pick up her feet walking. It hurts to watch them your so distracted it is hard to see the clothes.

like the wider runway too !

Oh the winner's clothes ? not a favorite . . .

Sadly I watch this finale last night out of curiosity. I was not surprised this guy won. I thought his POV was the most distinct. The other 2 guys came across as boring or ordinary and Aries did a better job of making the menswear

Howevre these high res pics do show a lot of flaws that were not apparent on the video.

Oh well, not like I was expecting great things from a Philipino version of the show. The host I will say is quite pretty

I agree it would have been great if Tlo had been able to to review the collection for PR Australia. That was a surprisingly upbeat/positive group of folks. Next season will likely been mean and petty though.

FRank

Sorry to disagree, but I liked the collection. It was innovative and fun. It was cohesive, not strongly influenced by big designers and I like deconstruction and sequins. I would wear some of his stuff, but I don't do classic in general. I was pleasantly surprised. And I liked the story. It tied everything together rather nicely.

I liked the collection as well. There are different shapes that I don't see all that much. I like the lines, the asymmetry, the color palette.

The only one I really don't like is number 3. It looks like her boobs are at her hips. Her boobs must have melted on her way through the atmosphere.

bitchybitchybitchy

That pleated skirt was a nightmare.

I wanted the Duchess to be there screaming "those hips are INSANE"!

When do we get PR Bulgaria????

I actually don't think this is so bad. The POV is strong and distinct. I love the black outfit that got the "No. Awful" comment.

TLo covered the PR Canada finalists.

AMEN, SISTER!!!

No mention of the horrible nude hose?

I did something I usually don't do and actually watched the video first. When I watched this collection walk, I didn't think it was that bad and was actually loving the 1 to 3 gimmick. And then I saw the pictures. They say a picture says a thousand words. All I wanted was for these pictures to shut up!! Total fug.

Ditto and an "Oy vey!"

Maybe Santino should move to the Phillipines??

I like how the models look like they actually eat real food. And they still look beatiful.

I would wear the clothes...if forced to do so at gunpoint.

Wait until TLO posts Phillip's collection (if they do) it was much better and deserved the win in my opinion.

I'm still reeling over Imelda Marcos' appearance. I thought a couple of the challenges were interesting, particularly the non-traditional clothes out of traditional materials, and the next challenge which was the traditional dress made out of modern stuff.

I was not impressed with the workmanship - I did not see sewing and construction skills. I loved Apple though. She was just so brutal!

so does this mean you guys are ripping the Australian PR collections?

And not to be a total bitch, but I was surprised that the models were much heavier than American and European models. They're still probably smaller than the average woman but they were pretty large for models. It was .... different.

I think they look quite healthy (that's not code for anything at all); their arms and shoulders don't make me cringe. But I think part of it is that they probably aren't as tall as American/European models, so they don't go into the crazy stick insect realm? Which still means they're probably heavier relative to western models, but eh.

I hope this means TLo will cover the PRAus finals, too! I heard it was more interesting than PRUS5. I really wish PRCan2 would start soon; hope the talent pool still has depth....

Ahahahaha. I'm so glad you guys are looking at this show. I watched it and got homesick because everybody sounds like my titas all talking over each other.

One of the judges, Rajo, was supposed to make my wedding dress (lots of handbeading, which I think is/was his specialty) but it never happened because I didn't have a supersized Manila wedding!

They're all a lot of look, and many are overwrought.

But overall, I'd have to say a lot more interesting and forward than most of what went down the runway at Bryant Park.

The makeup was absolutely distracting. I think he made a huge misstep relying on this as a theme. All I could do was look at the eyes, rather than the clothes.

And yes, PR is in many countries! It's good to see the other shows because the aesthetic varies greatly from country to country.

Star Trek.

I will say no more.

That seam in the middle of the second dress is bugging the shit out of me.

And this guy won?!?!

Asian Fashion design comes from a very different design base than here in America.

Not to say that they don't wear American or French designers, but they have their own take on designs, Opulent, lots of layers, heavy material, beading lots of beading.

Everyone dresses up, your riding a train and some Lady in pearls and silk is sitting next to you.

I could see him win, and lots of the clothes worn.

you have to consider that he came from a completely different culture than most of us posting here so his views in fashion will be completely different.

i was able to watch the entire finale and my opinion? it made the story and the POV really stood out. it's not wearable, yes, but still coherent with the story he made up unlike the others. that is what i think that gave him the win.

A note about the models: I can only assume they have big boobs and heavier legs because Filipinos are naturally bigger. I say that in the kindest way possible since our food is so delicious, and it is impossible to eat just one empanada.

:::::: silence :::::::

Says more than any words to describe this "collection".

and now my desire to watch PR Philippines has been tarnished.

I thank you, my fairy god-bloggers, for showing me the err of my ways.

Gotham

Sean Hannity ROCKS!!!!

At some point, 'point of view' became synonymous with 'batshit crazy'.

that would be when Jay won - Or even before that, when he stayed in after the second challenge.

on a lighter note:

That male model is HOT. I want to sex him.

And I shall.

Oh, come on now, I've seen worse . . . . on PR AMERICAN! It was a pretty cohesive collection and some of the looks weren't half bad.

And not to be a total bitch, but I was surprised that the models were much heavier than American and European models. They're still probably smaller than the average woman but they were pretty large for models. It was .... different.

It was wonderful! U.S. Models are often pathetically thin and sometimes skeletal. That is NOT as attractive as normal curves.

Thanks TLo for blogging about this. I often watch some of the non-U.S. shows on U-Tube in preference to some network TV, and it is nice to get your take on it.

I echo the sentiment of one commenter: Project Runway Philippines? You guys are hardcore! I didn't even know that there's one in Asia!

Now, looking at the collection, on one hand, I could see why he won. The story is there, and Aries didn't rehash his looks. I think it's a little unfair if we'd look at his collection with our American aesthetic, because things are different overseas, design- and style-wise. (The men's outfit is also fantastic looking!)

On the other, I'm disappointed at the execution issues. Some indeed made the girls look larger, and some are just plain overstyled. If he was to show this to Nina "Ms. Execution" Garcia, she probably would have made comments that would end all TLo captioning.

At any rate, I appreciate that you're branching out to the other Project Runway spinoffs! Since PR USA won't be showing for a while, and Stylista is just bleh, something new to read from PRGay is a-ok by me.

Forget the fact that the models are gorgeous without starving themselves or being apologetic Dove like lassies and lad these broads knew how to walk it.

Some of the looks weren't bad...
It's the makeup that bothers me.

No offense to busty women here, but when a runway model like the very last one is that top heavy it makes the entire look sloppy.

A healthy weight yes, but not that. It doesn't display the fashio well at all.

Before comparing the Philippine version to that of first world countries, maybe we can first ask how much money were given to the designers to make their collections.

Sorry TLO but I have to disagree with you guys.
I love this collection. You may not share his point of view but I certainly do and I would love to wear several of these designs.

Mariana (The Unoriginal)

I would wear every single one of these outfits...to a Star Trek convention.

@ jay - it wasn't explicitly stated how much money they were given to produce a collection but based on the menswear challenge, they have PHP3,000 to make an outfit (around US$60+ give or take)

The last model looks like she has her butt on backwards. And the large boobs with the bra showing through the fabric = dumpy frumpy.

Yuck.

Aries did have a lot of showmanship.

On TV, his collection looks a lot better; however after looking at the high resolution pics, I can't believe he won. Philip and Veejay had some, OMG what were they thinking moments (too short or too much), but they also had beautiful moments too.

I think that his win was politically motivated, to make the people from Mindanao proud to be Filipino.

Kind of dug it. There's definitely a different cultural aesthetic going on there, which is nice to see, and I don't hate the scifi influence. (Star Trek? Doesn't resemble it so much, if you've ever seen some of the snoozeworthy "the future is all clean lines and muted color palettes!" costuming in the franchise.)

Definitely looked better on the grainy you tube video than in the photos. At least he put a little color in his collection.

urgh, HIDEOUS.
you should have had ripped the project runway australia's :(( this is just simply bad...

I really wish you guys would critique PR Australia!! I watched it a few months ago when it was on - some very good stuff in there, ripe for TLo-nitpicking :).

I hope this means TLo will cover the PRAus finals, too! I heard it was more interesting than PRUS5.

It most definitely was! The skill level was higher & the characters far entertaining, IMO...

I can't believe this versus the other, much nicer collection! What is going on in the Philippines? Are the judges smoking a joint beforehand? Is something infecting Philippino water? I think the line has to be drawn between "modern/innovative/conceptual" and "fug/ridiculous". It's actually laughter-inducing. It reminds me of a cross between Bug's Life and Dracula.
