Interview with The Gunn

TV Guide has a great interview with Tim, where he doesn't disappoint in the dish department.

Some excerpts:

On his show:
How excited are you to come back for a second season of "Guide to Style"?

Well, I'm thrilled about it. I'll be really honest: I found the taping of Season 1 to be really difficult and really grueling. I know it was largely because it was our first season and we were finding our way and learning the ropes. But doing Season 2 was really a thrill, I have to say. A good part of that has to do with Gretta Monahan and what she's like to work with and how user-friendly she is. There's so much empathy she can give our fashion-challenged subjects. This is not in any way to denigrate Veronica Webb; I adore her. But when you're a supermodel, it's hard for someone to feel like they understand your issues.

On Kenley's behavior:
The way they edit makes it seem like you're aloof to the fact that she's so rude to you. She's constantly rolling her eyes and making dismissive comments about you, and you don't seem to react.

The editing is brilliant. You only see a mere portion of what actually goes on. The conversation I had with Kenley in the workroom was easily a good 15 to 20 minutes. During her home visit, we had a very amicable time, and I saw a warmer, more user-friendly side of Kenley. But when she returns for fashion week, she's back with her boat barrels blazing, let me tell you. But, you know she does this to herself. I simply call her on what I believe to be ill-advised decisions. And then of course she pushes back in her Kenley-like way. Then, you're like, "Fine. All right. Fine. Do whatever you want." It's like my old refrain, "I can't want you to succeed more than you do."

Incidentally, if you haven't caught it yet, his show is vastly improved from last season. We'll have a post about it soon.

Interesting article. I'm curious about the Kenley showdown.

Don't you think Tim probably said "both barrels blazing" and TV Guide just got it wrong?

Hmmm...I wish that somewhere, even on line, we'd get to see Tim & Kenley unedited, unplugged and unhinged.

Yes, his show IS much better than last season, but it's still kind of dull...and actually, I think it's because of Tim. I don't find him charismatic enough to carry an entire show on his shoulders, and that's why I think this new Gretta chick is so much better than Veronica Webb was - she brings a little personality to the show.

I DO love Tim's intellectual and no-nonsense approach though. I think the format of the show is very smart and conducive to changing attitudes, informing the women of the basics, and helping them to feel confident in developing their own style.

It's still too reliant on Tim to be a total winner, but it's definitely growing on me, and I will watch more.

I don't think he was misquoted - I think it was a reference to her Tugboat Annie story.

Love Tim. Always love to hear what he has to say. I agree with you Gotham - I would really just die to get my hands on the real interaction between the two.

Thanks for posting the link!!

"...boat barrels blazing.."
*snort*

TUGBOAT!

And the Kenley apologists will continue to say she was just 'edited that way'.
But if she grew up around work boats (and tugs are a catagory of work boat), the crews on work boats work together, and standoffishness and self absorbtion there get folks fired. It's an environment where working together is a necessity.

I think Tim's GTS is the kind of show that needs to be seen. How many hours of TV are devoted to golf? But everybody in that audience wears clothes and I really wish that clothes could get a fraction of that air time. There ought to be an audience for this show. Likeable people working together with an ending that's not a downer.
A show that can be enjoyed with no (longer any) yuck factor.
Tabitha's (makes you want to check under the sink) show gets the better timeslot.
I want Tim's show to keep on.

We don't have a new Jackie Kennedy on the horizon to raise national standards. Tim can do some good.

Thank you for the link! That really was a good interview, especially hearing more about what he thought his original role in the workroom would be.

And I do like the new version of the Guide to Style show. I don't know why exactly but Tim Time is always soothing to my soul.

We don't have a new Jackie Kennedy on the horizon to raise national standards.

I hope I'm not hijacking this thread with an off-topic interjection, but I really think Michelle Obama has the potential to be "the new Jackie Kennedy." Designers will court her even more than they are now, and she has the style, class and carriage to make excellent choices.

oh, to see a showdown between Tim and Kenley for real!

people are not user friendly.

I expect Kenley's Dad's tug boat had cannons ala pirate ship.

I've actually been on a tug boat, in my youth, and I'm sure I saw a guy with a peg leg and a parrot on his shoulder.

re: Kenley apologists

I don't think that anyone who has stood up for Kenley (myself included) says that she is charming.

The main reasons I stick up for Kenley are that I think her designs are as good as the others (poor season in general) and I don't appreciate the gang-banging from the other designers and the production staff.

Sidewalk Story:

"gang banging"??? Really???

LMAO!!!!

I like the show.

But making up pretty people to become prettier...not really that interesting.

Tim's capable of doing more.

...her boat barrels blazing!
LOVE Tim!

good article. i did catch his latest show. i just like tim so much that i will continue to watch it & his new sidekick has so much more personality.

I'm not sure what you mean by "Kenley apologists", but Tim Gunn himself said "The editing is brilliant." That is a pretty ambiguous statement. It could mean anything, but it certainly confirms masterful editing.

Getting BACK to Tim:

Is there some kind of black hole in the gay world? How can this man still be SINGLE???

Hells bells gentlemen, he's a CATCH!! HELLO!!!!!!

Steady job, great personality, attuned to the outside world, dead handsome....I could go on and on here. There has to be some kind of vortex to explain why this man is still single!

I knew the new Kenley wouldn't last. The girl just can't help herself. And GT, I'd like to see the unedited version of their previous showdown too. The way it was edited, we never got to experience the precipice that Tim felt he was led over. He just looked like he was overreacting.

Tim's show is better than last season's and the concert pianist show was kind of cute, but I'm not sure I'd be a long-term watcher. And someone else commented on it before, but that Optitechs visual makes everyone look heavy. I don't know why, but it does. I'd toss that thing.

His skin is like perfect - has he had work done? What kind of moisturizer does he use?

Anne

TIm's show is so much better this time around. I like how they go shopping with the person in question. They need the support to know how to pick out the right clothes. What better way than to have Tim go along?

Thank you very much for the link! I love how candid Tim Gunn always is in the interviews. He's not afraid to speak his mind, positive or negative. You don't get the sense (as you do with many celebrities) that he's parsed every word he spoke to create the best possible impression. And yet he always sounds intelligent, and never sounds mean. I love Tim, and it's always a treat to see him interviewed.

"user-friendly"? Hmmmm. . .

If Tim were in a long term relationship, his partner or love interest (hee, I learned a new term this week) would have to tolerate his man crushes, Keith, Emmett (perhaps more of an internet phenomenon), Blayne (good thing he was of age) and Rami (how couldn't he).

Wow, what a great interview. I loved his last line about navigating the world.

To a different point, I'm with Gotham...I want to see an unedited encounter.

"My least favorite is the proliferation of Crocs. I don't understand them."

AMEN!!!

In numerous interviews, Tim has said he got his heart broken in his mid-twenties, and never wanted another relationship after that. I suspect he also really cherishes his alone time -- that's true of a lot of teacher-types who have a charismatic public face (speaking as one myself.)

Thanks for the Saturday treat...and thanks Siren for the
wedding gown extra. I would have killed tohave worn a turtleneck bridesmaid dress! (I watch PR to be able to follow this blog - and a lot of the fun of the blog is Sirens designs.)
Tim MUST have the worlds greatest
facialist...what is so lovely is that his spirit matches his beautiful face.
And in these weird times - we all need to "navigate the world" like Mr Tim - with as much grace as possible.

He's just a delight. Genuinely nice but not cloying and super sincere.

As for make-over shows, I've never liked any except the British "What Not to Wear." But I haven't seen this season's GTS

Thank you very much Gloria. The sketches are my very small Thank you to our wonderful host Tom (who likes the comics) and Lorenzo ( who likes the fashion).

Cool, is you "collection" posted somewhere?

Bret, I have to tell you, I don't know how much they're going to leave in with the edit, but Kenley and I go at it again.

I suspect Tim Gunn's version of going at it is to cup his chin in his hands, furrow his brow and peer over the rims of his glasses.

I've been racking my brain trying to come up with a worthy adversary for Kenley and S1 Jay is the only name that has come to mind thus far.

This next epi actually looks pretty good.

Looks like Big Daddy Gunn is getting another mean girl client, resulting in another smackdown.

You're very welcome Ms Siren - I found this little thingy on the bottom of the sketches that looks like a magnifying glass - if you hit that button the sketches are enlarged and voila! Magnifique! (sic) And thanks again to Tom and Lorenzo for the fashion and the comics and a Saturday smile.

What are boat barrels and why would they be blazing?

I like this season of Tim's show, so far, much better than last.

I love Tim. My 8 year old daughter observed that he looks uncannily like Max Headroom.

I agree with Marie and Brooklyn Bomber. It's weird that he refers to both women as "user-friendly." That term is for operating systems or other man-made tools, not human beings. Why not just say "friendly"?

Prism Eclipser

Tim reminds me of an older Austin Scarlett.

Perhaps Kenley can revive her career prospects with a turn on "The Deadliest Catch."

Sorry Tom,
She is NO Jackie Kennedy.

Sarah has more style and CLASS BY FAR!
